DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL
Hello and welcome back to the Loughborough University stadium for our FA cup game against in form Sheffield FC Women, I would like to warmly welcome you all to Loughborough.
It’s really great to be back at home, the groundman have been working hard behind the scenes to keep our pitch looking beautiful as we enter the winter months. Today’s game promises to be competitive with both teams going toe to toe with the opportunity to progress into the next round and win some of the allimportant prize money.
This season marks the first where the FA have invested a significant amount of money into the women’s FA Cup prize money pot in partnership with the Premier League. I really hope this continues to grow year on year to support the professionalisation of the women’s game.
Our guests come into the game high off the back of a win in the FA Cup following some positive results in their last 3 games.
Our Lightning team will be looking to put in a consistent performance across the full 90 minutes this week. Although we were competitive last weekend against Huddersfield we have reviewed and reflected this week and identified some real key areas we want to improve as a team. We will be looking to put in a more complete performance than last week.
I would like to also say a big thank you to George our Lightning wheelchair basketball coach and the squad for hosting the players this week in a fantastic earning and development opportunity. We had the chance to play wheelchair basketball against two- and three-time Para-Olympian athletes. Here at Loughborough this is what It means to be a part of the Lightning family!
I would like to say one last massive thank you to Issy Martin who is moving on from head coach into a new role as Club Development Officer of the Women’s National League. Issy has been an asset to the program and team and we wish her all the best for the future.
And finally, I would like to welcome the directors, players and staff from Sheffield Women today, the first women’s club, I hope you all have a great experience here with us.
Rebecca Sawiuk Director of FootballWELCOME
ISSY MARTIN KAYLEIGH HINESFirstly welcome to our opponents Sheffield today, especially the familiar faces in the team. We hope we provide an exciting FA cup game for you all.
But, with it being my final notes I would like to dedicate my spot in the programme today to all the staff and players I have either volunteered with or worked with across Loughborough Foxes and Loughborough Lightning.
Although I hope to continue to support the team around my new role, stepping down as “Gaffa” has been a super hard decision, most of all because it means spending less time with such a great group of people. I have some fantastic memories that I will treasure; BUCS champions, the great escape, SO many many away trip stories, especially in the southern premier with Foxes too. It has been an absolute pleasure to be the leader of your Boat and I cannot wait to continue to watch / support you all to continue to row that boat faster. Is x
A huge welcome to the Loughborough University Stadium and the place we’re fortunate enough to call home. Firstly, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your support so far, whether that be pitch side home and away or your following of Lightning Football. It certainly doesn’t go unnoticed and means everything to the players and staff.
With that being said and looking at our season so far, we’re not shying away from our current position in the table and that simply not being good enough by our own standards. Football is a results-driven business and we as a collective are responsible and accountable for turning good performances into points on the board.
With the ability and character we have across the squad, coupled with recent performances, I have every belief in this group that we will start to see that transpire into results on the pitch. Every game is a battle and every advantage has to be earned, and the biggest tribute I can pay this team is our grit and determination to embrace the challenge.
Although I am fairly new around the place, I love hearing the stories of last season and previous seasons and ultimately how all of those moments have shaped the legacy that is Lightning Football today. What a story so far and how exciting that we all have the opportunity, to continue to write that – starting with making the 2022/23 season a great one.

TODAYS OPPOSITION SHEFFIELD FC
Sheffield FC Women was formed in 2003 when previous team Norton Ladies affiliated with the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC. The Club started life in Division 1 East of the Yorkshire & Humberside Regional WFL, the bottom level of the women’s pyramid of football at the time, which became the North East Regional WFL in 2005/06.
Having finished third, then runners up for two successive seasons, Sheffield finally won their first league title in 2007/08, and within the space of two more seasons, was promoted into the Northern Combination WFL, which the team won at the first attempt in 2010/11.
Sheffield’s debut season at FA Women’s Premier League level saw the team finish as Northern Division runners up behind eventual champions Manchester City. The team picked up silverware for the third season running, courtesy of a first Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup title.
Sheffield went one better in the league in 2012/13 as they lifted the FA WPL Northern Division title for the very first time. They also repeated their success in the S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, beating Rotherham United 6-0 in the final.
With promotion to the FA Women’s Super League not possible, Sheffield were forced to defend their FA WPL Northern Division crown in 2013/14, which they managed to do with five matches to go, ultimately finishing 15 points clear of runners up Preston North End. They added a third successive S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, but the highlight of the season was winning the FA WPL Cup by beating Cardiff City 6-2 in the final, crowning off a treble trophy winning season.
In 2014/15, the first team missed out on a second successive FA WPL Cup losing on penalties in the final to Charlton Athletic, but the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup was won for a fourth year running. The Club enjoyed a best ever run in the FA Women’s Cup by reaching the Fifth Round. Sheffield
FC won a third successive FA WPL Northern Division title, to secure a place in a first ever Championship Play Off Final in which an injury time winner saw Sheffield beat Portsmouth to become the first club to gain promotion on merit to the top flight of the game: the FA Women’s Super League.
Under new first team manager Zoe Johnson, Sheffield secured a respectable fifth place finish in their debut FA WSL season in 2016 and reached the quarter-finals of the Continental Tyres Cup. The development team finished as runners up in both the FA WSL Northern Division and the League Cup, losing 2-1 in extra time to Arsenal.
The 2017 Spring Series was less of a success for Sheffield as they finished in ninth, and were unlucky to go out of the FA Women’s Cup at the fourth round stage to a controversial penalty in a 1-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers Belles. But the team kick started again for the 2017/18 season having changed back to a winter season, with Sheffield once again finishing in fifth place and beating their previous points total.
With the FA’s continued agenda to drive the financial burden of clubs competing at Tier 2 up and up, Sheffield were forced to make the decision to withdraw from the newly constituted FA Women’s Championship before the 2018/19 season, and thus began that season back in the FA Women’s National League. A very challenging year saw the team battling relegation with three months to go, so a managerial change brought Calum Oakenfold back to the Club along with a few new players, and just two defeats from their final seven matches ensured Sheffield survived the drop.
A string of poor results at the commencement of the 2019/20 season saw Oakenfold decide to step away, and Graham Abercrombie start his tenure of the women’s team. With experience at this level over the past eight years, Abercrombie is the ideal candidate to improve Sheffield FC Women’s fortunes over the coming years.

LOUGHBOROUGH FOXES
Gail and Paul Fox founded Loughborough Foxes in 1999, known then as Shepshed Foxes until 2002.
For their first 15 years, Foxes played in local leagues, before being promoted to the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division (the 3rd ranked tier of women’s football) in 2015. After the first season they suffered relegation but managed a promotion in 2018 to return to this tier. Winning this Midlands Division One title was actually a club record for Foxes, winning 22 games and drawing just 1.
LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY PERFORMANCE TEAM
Loughborough Students Women’s Football Club offers many competitive opportunities. The performance team compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Northern Premier League. When possible, players are also supported to play “external football” alongside the programme, most notably with our partner Loughborough Foxes (Tier 3), but also other Tier 3 and Championship clubs.
Each year Loughborough University invests a million pounds in performance sport, and a million pounds in facilities. Thanks to this investment, Director of Football Richard Allen is able to lead a professional programme of coaching and support.
As a first team performance squad member you will receive expert coaching, access
to our world class facilities, heavily discounted Powerbase gym membership, strength and conditioning training, nutrition, sports science and sports medicine support. Within the programme players also have access to Performance Lifestyle support and our top athletes can apply for scholarships.
MERGING/ LIGHTNING LAUNCH
The University’s performance team and the Loughborough Foxes have officially combined to launch a new Lightning programme that will compete nationally against some of the biggest names in the sport.
The clubs have worked in close collaboration for a number of years now with Head Coach Issy Martin overseeing both programmes since her appointment at the University in September 2019.
Lightning will compete in the FA Northern Premier League where it will face teams including Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and West Bromwich Albion.
2021/22 SEASON
The first season 2021/22 as Loughborough Lightning in the FA Women’s National League ended in a 10th place finish, narrowly avoiding relegation. It was a tough start up until Christmas where the team only picked up a total of 4 points ahead of the break. Following Christmas, the team found their form and produced some fantastic performances and results to ensure they retained their Tier 3 status for the 2022/23 season, finishing on a total of 23 points. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, the team have made some key signings over the summer to develop the squad as well as welcoming to the programme, Director of Football, Rebecca Sawiuk
