DIRECTOR OF RUGBY
Welcome all to Loughborough University, where today we host local rivals Leicester Lions for the first time in a while in another Round of National 2 West. We welcome all players and officials from the club, in what we hope will be another great game of National League Rugby
The National League group had a weekend off last week to rest and recharge. It’s becoming a busy period for their academic studies, so this has been an opportunity to focus on their coursework’s in preparation for the season to start back.
Today we entertain Leicester Lions, who have set the pace this season sitting top of the table having lost only 1 game. It is great to welcome them back to Loughborough University, having not played them in a few seasons due to being in different leagues. We will be keen to ensure that we keep our momentum going into the Christmas block, having started to become more consistent.
The BUCS Super Rugby squad remain top of the League, after a high scoring draw a Hartpury. Another game in horrendous conditions like Bath, bu we managed recover from Half time deficit to draw 35-35. The competition is heating up, with now three teams sitting a the top. Again, the character and fight we showed to get ourselves back into the game and in a position to win was pleasing. A mindset we will undoubtably need for the remaining fixtures in the league prior to Christmas with Cardiff Met, Durham and Exeter all to play.
Sadly, we must also say goodbye to our current Head Coach Scott Sneddon, we leaves us this weekend. Scott took the role in April 2021, and has been a great servant to the club, and added to its already proud history. He has put us in a great place competitively in BSR and built solid foundations in the development of the programme with our National League and added to its already proud history. He has put us in a great place competitively in BSR and built solid foundations in the development of
the programme with our National League and BUCS 2 programmes ensuring we have an appropriate playing programme for all. Good luck Scott and Thank you for all that you have done.
Our next home fixtures are Cardiff Met (BSR) 30th November, Durham (BSR) 7th December and Redruth 10th December.
All the best to everyone today, Rhys Director of Rugby

A frantic start on a blustery day on Epinal Way saw the Students & Old Red’s exchange scores in a ‘nip and tuck’ first 30, with two penalties from Old Reds keeping them within touching distance after two well taken Students tries. It was not until Charlie Cadogen touched down that the students found some breathing room, taking their lead to 17-6, before a late first half score from Old Red’s tightened the gap, with the teams heading to the changing rooms locked at 17-11 in favour of the African violet’s.
The second half began how the first had ended, with the sides again exchanging scores, however as the hour mark approached, the fitness of the youthful nature of the students begun to take its toll on Old Red’s. As the game opened, the ball was moved with ease from coast to coast by a Loughborough side in the ascendancy, first it was Oscar Daniel to touch down before Jonny Mason finished an excellent attack from deep inside their own half. Before you knew it, Loughborough had hit the 50-point mark and
some fine kicking from substitute Luca Caplin continued to pile the pressure onto Old Red’s. A resilient Old Reds were rewarded for their efforts, with a late score ensuring that they did not leave empty handed, a fair result for their efforts.
As Loughborough climb towards the top 5 and Old Reds continue to battle in the middle of the standings, both sides will take positives ahead of their respective fixtures next week.

TODAYS OPPOSITION LEICESTER LIONS
Leicester Lions was formed in 1998 as a result of the amalgamation of two local clubs, Wigston RFC and Westleigh RFC. They now play their home fixtures at Westleigh Park. The Lions won promotion in 2004 and have stayed in the National Leagues ever since.
In 2019, the Lions were transferred from National 2 North to National 2 South, finishing 5th in the division before moving to the new National 2 West for this season.
They boast several high-profile names amongst their former and current players and coaching staff. Jason Aldwinckle, the former Leicester Tigers' hooker is the forwards coach, while the former club captain and England Counties outside back Gareth Collins has taken over as head coach.
They currently sit top of the table in Nat 2 West, boasting some strong wins in recent weeks. The students will have to work hard this week to end their winning streak.
