The Institute begins training munitions workers for the war effort

Newly named Loughborough College granted its own Armorial Bearings

School of Athletics, Games and Physical Training created

Burleigh Estate is bought by the College
1965
One of the campus’ most iconic buildings – The Towers – is opened as a hall of residence
1994
The University wins the first of seven Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education
1996
The University is renamed Loughborough University
1989
Her Majesty the Queen visits the University – the first royal visit in its history
1979
Students’ Union building opened by Monty Python’s Michael Palin and Terry Jones
2009
The University celebrates its centenary year The Princess Royal launches the new School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences and officially opens its state-ofthe-art Clyde Williams building

Loughborough College of Advanced Technology becomes Loughborough University of Technology, after being awarded a Royal Charter in recognition of its excellence and achievements to date Work is completed on the £21 million Loughborough Design School, enhancing the University’s position as a world leader in the field of design The Studio launches, supporting graduates to develop their ideas into commercially viable products, services or social enterprises

Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park expands when the Advanced Technology Innovation Centre (ATIC) opens The National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine opens Loughborough University London opens
2013
The University wins its seventh Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in recognition of its ground-breaking work in the area of high value manufacturing
2012
Loughborough welcomes Team GB to campus as they prepare for the London Olympic Games
2017
Olympic legend Lord Sebastian Coe is named as the University’s new Chancellor

Loughborough is named University of the Year at the 2020 Whatuni Student Choice Awards

Loughborough is named best university in the world for sports-related subjects in the QS World University Subject Rankings for the fifth year running Loughborough named University of the Year for Sport in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022 Loughborough-associated athletes won 35 medals at the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games
