Loughborough Design School Degree Show 2011

Page 1

Message from the School Director Welcome to this annual celebration of the work of our final year Industrial Design and Technology and Product Design and Technology students. The BA in Industrial Design and Technology has a bias towards product innovation through the integration of user needs/aspirations and product appearance. Whilst still retaining a focus on designing great looking products. The Product Design and Technology (BSc) develops capability in the underlying principles on which products operate by studying and applying mechanics, electronics and materials science throughout the course. The Design School boasts students who demonstrate a wide range of talents – from developing creative and innovative concepts through to the building and evaluation of their design prototypes. Loughborough has become recognised for this high level of creativity and innovation, which has arisen from the unique way we are able to blend design with functional and engineering expertise. In doing this our students engage in a truly multidisciplinary experience, which is always located within a framework of designing products. Enterprise is also a key part of our School’s activities, providing context and purpose to our students’ work. It ensures that the knowledge emanating from our teaching programmes has a route to impact for industry, commerce and society.

It builds upon the significant success of all partners in the RAE 2008 when D&T and ESRI had the highest Art and Design research profiles of any institution with 55% rated as world leading, as well as top rated scores for Ergonomics staff returned to 'Mechanical Engineering'. In addition, it exploits the provision of a new East Park Design Centre, due to be completed this year. Design activity will be undertaken beneath a broad umbrella of interdisciplinary provision which does not recognise particular disciplines as boundaries but seamlessly links them to provide solutions, research and teaching already recognised as world-leading by governments, industrialists and employers. This distinctive approach reflects the strength of design-related activity across a particularly broad spectrum, ranging from product styling to engineering design, nurturing the development of existing strengths in design ergonomics, transport safety, technology, sustainability, environmental ergonomics, design practice and education. Such an approach is identified as the means by which our research groups and teaching programmes can better engage with the challenges of globalisation and future market requirements, emphasising the breadth of multi-disciplinary skills required in design, innovation and commerce. This also ensures that teaching programmes are viable and fit for purpose by providing greater flexibility and opportunity to prospective students. It is the breadth of provision 'under one roof' that provides a distinct and unique grouping of renowned specialists, together with experienced practitioners and managers of multi-disciplinary design approaches, that is at the heart of our activity, and provides a one-stop opportunity for those seeking to collaborate or study in a very broad arena of design, ergonomics and technology.

Loughborough University Design School

The Design School was officially opened in August 2010 and brings together the complementary strengths of Design and Technology, Ergonomics and ESRI. The vision is of a Design School, which aims to build upon existing strengths through the synergy that will come from greater interaction and co-location.

The Design Centre The School will be moving to state-of-the-art facilities in a new purpose-built Design Centre. This will bring together the academic staff of the School, research students and support staff in a one stop shop for our design-based facilities. The new building will be in use before October 2011. Facilities include bespoke designed studios, research laboratories, prototyping workshops, teaching laboratories, lecture theatre/auditorium, offices and meeting rooms, IT labs and exhibition spaces. Spaces are designed to encourage student interaction across disciplines, course programmes and interests. Whilst no space is ‘owned’ by student groups or staff researchers it is designed to accommodate learning or research activities for appropriate fixed periods of time. For example, students are block timetabled when necessary, and allowed open access to facilities on other occasions, and research space is only fixed by the need to house specific equipment or resource.

cover3.indd 6

19/05/2011 10:17:36

Within these spaces will be the latest equipment for digital designing (including additive prototyping and manufacturing), haptic modelling, water-jet cutting, vehicle simulation, environmental chambers, subject preparation, movement simulation and analysis, surfacemount pcb development, water-jet cutting in addition to the usual workshops, laboratories and studio equipment and resources.
