RHYS EDWARDS
DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University, where today we host Harrogate in another Round of National 2 North. We welcome all players and officials from the club, in what we hope will be another great game of National League Rugby. I feel like I am writing the same programme notes again, but the last few games have been challenging and the results certainly haven’t showed the true competitiveness of the games, with us again losing out in the closing minutes having established ourselves well early in the game. Today’s opposition, Harrogate have had similar challenges to us, and will be, I’m sure looking to pick up some wins going into the last stage of the season. Its been a tough year having had no rugby last season, and its great that we are now heading into the final 5 games. This year is the final year of this league structure at level 4, before we go into a 3-league format, where we may likely not face north opposition. This is still all to be confirmed, with many league games left regarding promotion. This gives everyone the incentive to finish the season well now the sun is out. The BUCS Super Rugby squad played in the BSR Quarter Final this week against Swansea University at home. This was set up to be a physical challenge, with Swansea being unbeaten over the last 7 games, putting together some impressive performances. We knew it was going to be tough but following some early nerves we managed to put together our most assured performance of the season to finish with an impressive 40 -10 win. Eyes now turn to the semi-final where we are away to Durham. We must take confidence from this result but ensure that we are more accurate again against the league leaders,
and favourites. We are however confident that we can go and get a result. Back to today, I hope the weather stays and we have great afternoon of rugby. All the best Rhys Director of Rugby *Any further information regarding membership, please contact rugby@lboro.ac.uk for more information

first three minute of play. Loughborough retaliates with a strong carry with Bell taking it over the line in the 12th minute. This was followed up by Captain Jennings on the 20th minute, Captain Jennings makes a break and bounds over to take us into the lead, which was expertly converted by Smith. With another try by Langton mid-way though the half, Loughborough takes the a 12-point lead going ending the half. At the restart, Tynedale turned into a more aggressive and opportunistic side, taking advantage of several infringement by the home side. With Warner scoring Loughborough’s bonus point try, the away side had a big job to recover. With two additional tries from Tynedale and one successful penalties, Tynedale took themselves into the lead.
Loughborough tried to recover in the last few minutes of play from a converted try by Wainwright who broke though the away side defensive line, scoring between the posts. For the last few minutes to go, it seemed as if Loughborough had secured themselves a win, but with an successful penalty to Tynedale, the away side edged themselves into victory.

TODAYS OPPOSITION
HARROGATE ‘One club philosophy’ In 1871, the club was founded as Harrogate Football Club. The first match, played on 16th December 1871, was played opposite The Coach and Horses on the area currently known as the West Park Stray. Harrogate fielded 16 players to Leeds 11. Harrogate lost the match. The result was Leeds one goal and five touchdowns, Harrogate 1 touchdown. Four brothers played in the match Frank, Fred, Tom and William Fawcett. This was the only game lost in the club’s first four seasons. It is unlikely that the young men of Harrogate who set up the first Harrogate Rugby Club would have envisaged the club continuing for 140 years. It is highly likely that their attitude to the game is identical with the players of today.
The club have received success in the Yorkshire Cup winning it 12 times, most recently in 2017. Having gained promotion in at the end of the 2019/20 season, Harrogate are now back in the National Leagues. July saw Harrogate appointing new head coach, Sam Fox, who has previously spent 2 years at the club as academy head coach and looking forward to supporting the team in their first season back in National League 2.

A BRIEF HISTORY 1984 Rex Hazeldine is appointed as Head Coach leading the side to a UAU title and victory in the Leicestershire Cup. A touring Australian Universities side was also defeated.
1976
1919
1962-68
Loughborough College formed the original Rugby Union side in September 1919.
These were spectacular years for Loughborough, winning every UAU title except 1965. Gerald Davies, John Mantle, Dave Rollit, John Taylor, Bev Risman and Colin MacFadyean, became world class players. John Robins became the first British and Irish Lions coach.
1930 Loughborough Colleges competed in their first Universities Athletic Union competition, beating Nottingham University 8-0 in their first match.
1939 Loughborough Colleges reached the UAU final for the first time, losing narrowly to Swansea.
1953 Loughborough Colleges won the UAU for the first time.
Middlesex 7s winners: 1959, 1964 1966, 1970 and 1976.
1996 Loughborough enter the leagues at the bottom of the RFU pyramid.
The Student’s Unions of the University of Technology and the Loughborough Colleges merged and the Loughborough Students Rugby Club was formed. The team won the UAU in 1977, 1978 and 1979, with the 1978–79 side captained by the young centre Clive Woodward.
17
1970 The legendary Jim Greenwood coaches the Colleges to victory in the Middlesex Sevens, and the first UAU final at Twickenham. This side was probably the strongest ever, with six future internationals, Louis Dick, David Cooke, Clive Rees, Fran Cotton, Steve Smith, and Dick Cowman.
1997 Loughborough wins over Cambridge and Oxford in consecutive weeks signals the changing balance of power in student rugby.
1998 Ian Smith is appointed as the first full-time Director of Rugby.
2003 The World Cup winning England team was coached by six Loughborough alumni: Clive Woodward, Dave Alred, Andy Robinson, Dave Reddin, Phil Larder and Simon Hardy.
2005 Winning BUCS in 2005 breaks our longest spell without a BUCS victory.
2006 Real Varsity Match v Bath. Floodlights Appeal provides campus venue for the first ever rugby ‘event’ and engages alumni leading to the Vice Presidents club. A 3000+ crowd watched Loughborough beat Bath.
2008 Director of Rugby Dave Morris leads the side to promotion into National League 2 North, making the team the first student side to take part in the National Leagues.
2009 The Dan James Memorial Match Loughborough 23 – 20 England U20 A magnificent achievement for Dave Morris’ team and a suitably characterful performance through which to remember Dan.
2012 Loughborough v The Barbarians. A huge match to mark the opening of the Loughborough Stadium. Andy Robinson’s Barbarian side win 40– 7. Loughborough promoted into National League 1.
2016 Fiji win the first Olympic 7s competition coached by Loughborough alumni Ben Ryan, defeating Team GB in the process and fellow Loughborough alumni Phil Burgess.
2017 Loughborough Lightning enter the Tyrrells Premier 15s league.
