PEDRO FONTANA CHAIRMAN OF THE FUNDACIÓ ESADE In presenting the Annual Report, we look as ever towards the most relevant aspects of the past academic year, which has been marked by the beginning of Eugènia Bieto’s governance of ESADE as Director General, and by the approval of the Institutional Strategic Plan 2011-2014. In recent years, ESADE has grown significantly in terms of activity, campus, people and teams, budgets and organisational structure, and it has gained a nationally and internationally renowned position. To keep progressing along this route, the Board of Trustees approved the new Strategic Plan in November 2010, thereby incorporating to and interrelating with the classic missional lines − training, research and social debate − two new key strategic lines for the institution’s future development: innovation and globalisation. To be a global and innovative institution in diverse areas of activity is a challenge for Professor Eugènia Bieto’s leadership and management; which, with her management team and the dedication and effort of the whole academic community, she has satisfactorily met during her first period as Director General over the past academic year, and of which the present Annual Report is a good demonstration. A specific example of this effort is the continual impetus given to ESADE’s Sant Cugat campus as a campus of international excellence and closely linked to ESADECREAPOLIS, a space for creativity and business innovation. The strategic vision of this project as an ecosystem in which academia, research, innovation and entrepreneurship

EUGÈNIA BIETO DIRECTOR GENERAL coexist is one of the biggest challenges that lies ahead for us, and as such one of the key factors for the future development of ESADE. I would also like to underscore the importance of maintaining and strengthening our institutional identity, with fidelity to the project launched in 1958 by our founders: a group of professionals and entrepreneurs and the Society of Jesus. In this regard, last academic year the Trustees also approved a new formulation of ESADE’s mission and vision, which you can read in this Annual Report. I would not want to conclude this brief presentation without offering, in the name of the Board of Trustees, our sincerest thanks to all the people and teams at ESADE for their generous dedication. I would also like to express some deeply felt words of affection and remembrance for a person dear to us all, Ignasi Salvat, who died in June 2011. He was a Jesuit that accompanied and guided this great project during many years with much wisdom and great warmth in his role as Vice-Chairman of the Fundació ESADE.

The 2010-2011 academic year has been my first year as Director General, thus I feel a special responsibility in presenting this Annual Report, which gathers in a succinct form the wide range of activity undertaken by the ESADE community On our campuses in Madrid, Barcelona, Sant Cugat and Buenos Aires, as well as in a number of locations around the world, we had approximately twelve thousand students and participants on our courses during the last academic year. Our research activity continued to develop new projects and our contributions to academic journals increased. Likewise, in the area of social debate, we held numerous public events that prompted responses in the media; many of these events were organised in close collaboration with ESADE Alumni. In accordance with our Strategic Plan, we aim to achieve making ESADE a global academic institution that is also innovative and socially responsible. Globalisation and innovation are two key strategic issues for the building of ESADE´s future. In this regard, I would like to mention some initiatives that demonstrate the relevance and development of our strategy in these areas over the course of the academic year 2010-2011: the widening of our training portfolio with the launch of the Global Advanced Management Program® and the Master in Innovation & Entrepreneurship; the signing of the strategic alliance with Georgetown University; the launch of the Double Degree in BBA & Law and the BBA in English; our active participation in the European InnoEnergy

project; the consolidation of the Center for Global Economy & Geopolitics (ESADEgeo), and the strengthening of the global ESADE Alumni network, with its numerous international chapters. Finally, I would like to highlight the increasing impetus we are giving to the Sant Cugat campus and ESADECREAPOLIS, consolidating its international profile and enhancing it with an innovative form of cooperation between the academic and business sectors. Our current commitment to the foundational mission is that, over the coming years, ESADE should become a global benchmark academic institution that inspires and enables people and organisations to develop innovative and socially responsible leadership to build a better future for everyone. Today, more than ever, this commitment requires everyone to act with a deep sense of responsibility, aware that our decisions and behaviour, both personal and collective, have a considerable influence, and thus their impact must be positive and beneficial for society. Being a part of ESADE − as students, faculty, administrative and service staff, alumni or collaborators − has to be a motive for pride and active commitment to the values that we uphold: personal integrity, professional rigor and social responsibility. I would like to conclude this brief presentation by sincerely thanking for their work all the people who serve the great project of ESADE.

ESADE, A SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE ACADEMIC INSTITUTION

STRATEGIC MODEL FOR 2011-2014

In order to integrate corporate social responsibility (CSR) into the Institutional Strategic Plan, in September 2010 the Director General convened a task force, made up of experienced ESADE managers and professors, to reflect on this issue and draw up a Social Responsibility Action Plan for 2011-2014. In order to achieve this, ESADE used one of its own models (Losada, Martell & Lozano, 2011), which in a systemic and cross-cutting manner studied the questions and actions to be developed in the different strategic lines and subsystems, as can be seen in the figure below:

THE IMPROVING OF THE OPERATION OF SERVICES, EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE A MORE RATIONAL USE OF THE AVAILABLE RESOURCES.

2nd

In the optimisation and rationalisation of the available resources, two initiatives should be highlighted: CONSUMPTION INDICATORS Development and diffusion of consumption indicators (for paper, electricity and water). For the third year running, an assessment of the evolution in consumption was carried out across the different campuses. The most remarkable improvement was in the amount of paper used, which was 9 % lower than in the last academic year. Electricity consumption remained more or less the same, whilst the consumption of water increased slightly, due to a large extent to a leak at the Barcelona campus. WORLD COMMUNITY GRID PROJECT Initiative promoted by IBM. ESADE allows remote use of its computers outside of working hours, in order to collaborate in humanitarian research projects (the fight against cancer, prevention of infant mortality, etc.). An estimated total of 7 years and 249 days have been devoted to this, the equivalent of 7,000 results of calculations for research projects (www.worldcommunitygrid.org).

THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INSTITUTIONAL SOCIAL ACTION PROGRAMME WITH FUNDACIÓN BALIA (MADRID), AMICS DE LA GENT GRAN AND ACCIÓ SOLIDÀRIA CONTRA L’ATUR (BARCELONA).

3rd

In order to involve and commit different groups from our community, and offer various possible ways of collaborating.

MAIN INITIATIVES UNDERTAKEN DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR: • Participation in conferences, courses and academic events in Madrid and Barcelona, in collaboration with different bodies • Participation in events and celebrations (International Day of Older Persons, Gran Dinar de Nadal [Big Christmas Dinner], solidarity concert, etc.) • Socially-oriented consultancy projects with the three bodies within the context of the Alumni Giving Back programme, and participation in occasional voluntary work initiatives • Donation campaigns and recruitment of members (donation of books, Roses contra l’oblit [Roses against oblivion] campaign, etc.) • Dissemination and communication of the different organisations’ activities through ESADE’s internal newsletters, the institutional leaflet, Annual Report, etc. SOLIDARITY WITH JAPAN Collaboration with Japanese students at ESADE in various events and socially-oriented initiatives (institutional event, fundraising for the Japanese Red Cross, solidarity concert, migranodearena.org online platform, solidarity flea market, etc.).

THE PROMOTION AND IMPROVEMENT OF TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY WITHIN ORGANISATIONS. HIGHLIGHTING* THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ESADE’S MISSION AND VALUES.

IMPACT AND SOCIAL DEBATE

5

ESADE WISHES TO CONTRIBUTE TO PROMOTING THE DEBATE OF IDEAS AND PROPOSALS IN ISSUES OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL INTEREST IN ORDER TO COOPERATE IN BUILDING FREE, PROSPEROUS AND FAIR SOCIETIES.

IMPACT AND SOCIAL DEBATE

INSTITUTIONAL EVENTS

Over the years, ESADE has become a platform for the discussion of the most relevant issues for the future, an open and diverse forum, to generate debate and draw up proposals regarding the challenges that society and the economy are facing. Over 400 events organised throughout the academic year, with over 41,000 participants, in the form of international meetings, workshops, lecture series, conferences and forums. A debate of ideas and proposals to inspire a better future.

Eugènia Bieto takes office as the new Director General (3rd September, 2010) At this ceremony presided by Pedro Fontana, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Fundació ESADE, Professor Eugènia Bieto, expert in training entrepreneurs and business creation, took office as the new Director General and stated that her priority was to convert ESADE into a “global benchmark academic institution”. The Opening Ceremony of the Academic Year 2010-2011 (30th September, 2010) Dr. Eugènia Bieto delivered the opening speech entitled: “Challenges for Higher Education, ESADE’s Vision”. Graduations 2010-2011 Numerous students from the different Business School and Law School programmes graduated from ESADE during the academic year 2010-2011. The graduation ceremonies for students of the longest programmes, the Bachelor in Law and Bachelor in Business Administration programmes and the MBA, were special events, which were held, respectively, at L’Auditori de Barcelona and the Llotja de Mar due to their having the largest attendance. Talent Gathering (9th June, 2011) During the academic year 2010-2011 a total of 300 grants were awarded, mainly, to university degree students (BBA and Law) and MBA participants. The institution allocated more than €1.7M for this purpose and held an awareness event which brought together the grant holders, donors, faculty, PAS and representatives of the ESADE Management. VII ESADE Annual Research Day (30th June, 2011) Researchers’ conference intended to actively contribute to the most challenging current academic and social debates about issues that ESADE is undertaking research on.
