What happened in the 2015-16 academic year This academic year has been very fruitful, with existing initiatives that have been consolidating and new projects that have been launched to continue seeding and promoting entrepreneurship at ESADE and in the European ecosystem. The Master in Innovation and Entrepreneurship graduated its fifth class, and has been ranked third in the world, after similar programmes in Babson and MIT, in the Eduniversal Best Masters Ranking Entrepreneurship Worldwide. A new MBA course, together with partner universities Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya·BarcelonaTech (UPC) and the European School of Design, has been launched. Teams of students from the three centres work together with top European researchers from Geneva-based CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) to solve people-centred innovation challenges and discover market applications for breakthrough technologies. At the end of term, the teams present their business plans to a panel of investors. Regarding research, the most important event for the EEI team has been the 2nd ESADE Entrepreneurship Summit, where a group of leading researchers from around the world met in June in Barcelona to discuss trends and developments. There are many other initiatives in place, as you can see in detail in this annual report. One new initiative launched in September 2015 was the very successful ‘Challange for Business Innovation (C4BI)’, where student teams competed to do an audit of the innovation process of a company. The challenge was led by acclaimed chef Ferran Adria, from ‘El Bulli’ restaurant, considered one of the most creative and innovative individuals in the world. Finally, regarding business creation, EWorks, the new initiative that puts together founder meet-ups, co-working space, and the accelerator programme, was officially launched this academic year. The first year of the accelerator programme was very successful, with more than 65 teams from many different academic programmes participating, and nine teams presenting their business proposals on the final Demo Day. We expect these proposals to evolve during 2016-17. Good luck to everyone! Summarising, you will find plenty of detail on these and many other events led by the ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute in this annual report. We hope you enjoy it.

ACTIVITIES IN THE 2015-16 ACADEMIC YEAR

MOMENTUM PROJECT ESADE and BBVA are the driving forces behind the Momentum Project (with participation from PWC). The project’s main aim is to spur social entrepreneurship in business schools in Spain, Portugal, Peru, and Mexico, by creating a support ‘eco-system’ for the most promising social enterprises, and enabling these to consolidate and make a greater impact on society. The project is led by Professor Alfred Vernis and managed by Laura Guindeo. Those taking part in the project include EEI professors Luisa Alemany and Marcel Planellas, and mentors Carles Florensa and Francesc Saldaña. Social Investment Day marks the end of the project. On the 6 October 2015, the development plans for the ten social enterprises were presented at the event’s fourth annual presentation. Social Investment Day is held on BBVA’s La Moraleja campus. The day also featured the presentation of the winning team of the Jóvenes Emprendedores Sociales programme, sponsored by the BBVA; the conference ‘Employment and Social Innovation Programme’ led by Simone Uccheddu, investment manager at the European Investment Fund; and the closing speech and diploma awards, which was conducted by Cristina de Farias, Director of BBVA Spain and Portugal. Under the project, a training programme was drawn up to enable participants to: (1) consolidate and boost the growth of social entrepreneurship in institutions; (2) strengthen skills and exploit key success factors; (3) spur creativity and innovation by focusing on users; (4) cover advanced finances; (5) exploit social networks and social media; (6) discuss social projects; (7) measure the social impact and challenges of growth in social enterprises.

2.2.3. RESEARCH PROJECTS

FACE ENTREPRENEURSHIP DELPHI STUDY

SUCCESS FACTORS FOR NEW ENTREPRENEURS

STEP PROJECT FOR FAMILY ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Professor Jan Brinkmann sits on the Advisory Board of the European Commission’s FACE Entrepreneurship (Failure, Aversion, Change in Europe) project and is author of the FACE Entrepreneurship Delphi Study. The Failure Aversion Change in Europe (FACE) project is a project of the European Union and runs a communication campaign to boost ICT entrepreneurship in Europe by fighting against the fear of failure (by using a gamified process). FACE Entrepreneurship is aimed at young prospective European IT entrepreneurs, with the aim at helping them to choose a path to follow while facing the psychological and cultural barriers related to the fear of failure. It promotes the skills aspiring entrepreneurs need to materialise ideas in projects while fostering relations between the various parts involved in the project.

EEI’s Professor Jan Brinckmann and Professor Dietmar Grichnik at the University of St Gallen in Switzerland continue to expand their research on the long-term success factors for emerging companies. The results of their research were published in the Journal of Business Venturing, a leading publication in the field.

Led by Professor Alberto Gimeno and with the collaboration of Professor María José Parada. Promoted in 2005 by Babson College (USA) and developed with six European business schools: ESADE; HEC (France); Jönköping International Business School (Sweden); Università Bocconi (Italy); Universität St. Gallen (Switzerland); and University Witten/Herdecke (Germany). The aim of this long-term study is to investigate entrepreneurship in different generations of family firms: their ability to grow and generate social and economic value and perpetuate their entrepreneurial legacy. The STEP Academic Meeting took place on the 17 and 28 of May 2016 in Lyon (France). Professor Alberto Gimeno and Professor Maria José Parada participated.

ENTREPRENEURIAL ORIENTATION IN SOCIAL INVESTING

EEI professor Jaume Villanueva and Professor Harry Sapienza of the University of Minnesota have continued to develop their research on the effects of storytelling and pitching strategies on evaluations made by potential investors.

Professor Luisa Alemany and academic associate Mariarosa Scarlata drew up a project on entrepreneurial orientation in social investment, and the influence of founders and board members on staff diversity.

Designed by Professor Alfred Vernis, the study analyses the impact of investment on social entrepreneurship.

2.2.4. CASE LIBRARY During this academic year, researcher Lourdes Urriolagoitia, together with EEI faculty, wrote and published:

BIOCENTURY (A), (B), (C) AND EPILOGUE Professor Jordi Vinaixa This case series shows how a new entrepreneurship process/concept has changed the approach to setting up new businesses and customer development. It is the process whereby an entrepreneur builds a new company, makes it grow, and then consolidates to ensure long-term growth. Case discussion helps students understand the entrepreneur’s decisions and the steps taken to make the new venture work.

PRIVALIA Professor Marcel Planellas Pending entry to the CLADEA-BALAS collection and publication by Harvard Business School Publishing. Available in English and Spanish with the corresponding teaching notes. Privalia was created in 2006 as a private club offering flash internet sales to its members. The products offered are clothing and accessories, with discounts of up to 70%. Privalia grew quickly after its launch. Within three years, it was profitable in Spain and expanded its operations to Italy, Brazil and Mexico. By 2010, it had become the market leader in all the countries it operated in. However, competition also grew quickly. The company’s experience over the years told management that speed and market size were the key to success in the fast-moving internet fashion sales business. Students explore the various growth strategies for a company eager to maintain growth and market leadership in a new sector in the face of stiffening competition.

SCYTL Professor Eugenia Bieto and Professor Luisa Alemany This case has been selected by The Case Center to appear in the next edition of the Case Folio - The IUP Journal of Management Case Studies and is due for publication in December 2016. Scytl was founded in 2001 as a spin-off from a research group at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Its field of expertise was secure electronic voting. The founders would never have believed that within 13 years the firm would become the world leader in electronic voting systems. The firm’s products are based on the latest technology and is protected by international patents. In 2014, Pere Vallès, Scytl’s CEO and the person behind its international expansion, announced that the company would go public on the NASDAQ in 2016. The case illustrates: (1) the evolutionary process from start-up to becoming an international market leader; (2) the complexities and challenges of making a successful IPO.

In 2014, Roba Amiga was operating a plant with the most advanced technology in southern Europe. It processed over 3000 tons of used clothes, which were then sold in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. The firm employs 55 people. Its target for 2017 is 17,000 tons a year, which will enable it to employ 150 people.

EL BULLI FOUNDATION Professor Marcel Planellas This was a ‘live’ case, tracking events in 2014-2015. It involved interviews with Ferran Adrià (the driving force behind the foundation) and a thorough review of the documentation. Given that the foundation is still a work in progress, a suitable cut-off point for the case will be decided later. The case covers a serial entrepreneur (Ferran Adrià) and open innovation. Once Ferran Adrià’s El Bulli restaurant had closed, he decided to transform it into a foundation whose mission is to foster creativity in the world of gastronomy.

Written cases and teaching note:

FLUENT SYSTEMS (A) (B) Professor Jaume Villanueva Case (A) describes how a business plan was drawn up around a prototype electronic system to remotely monitor fertiliser application. Sorenson and Villanueva founded a company to develop the prototype – but sales growth proved disappointing. Case (B) describes what happened after the company launch, why the product failed to sell, and Sorenson and Villanueva’s decision to sell the firm. The case teaches the concepts and tools of lean start-up and how using these tools might have saved the company.

How to take strategic decisions and not die in the attempt by Professor Marcel Planellas (PMD 87)

Launching growth companies with ESADE’s support by Professor Jan Brinckmann

Jointly organised by EEI and ESADE Alumni Entrepreneurship

Jointly organised by EEI and ESADE Alumni Entrepreneurship

22 February 2016 – Bilbao 17 March 2016 - ESADE Barcelona 14 April 2016 - Tarragona 28 April 2016 – Zaragoza 30 May 2016 – Lleida 16 June 2016 – Seville 30 September 2015 – Palma de Mallorca 19 October 2015 – Valencia 19 November 2015 – Tenerife

22 October 2015 - Munich (Germany) 23 October 2015 - Frankfurt (Germany) The talk focused on how to validate business opportunities and the key lessons learnt from how to start a growth company. Dr Brinckmann also presented new activities in the realm of entrepreneurship, such as the ESADE Accelerator for students, and explained how people can get involved and outline specific activities for developing the ESADE network.

Companies and organisations are built on the strategic decisions taken by their directors and owners. But not all decisions have the same weight. Some decisions define the road ahead and have a long-term impact: these are strategic decisions. The companies of the twenty-first century increasingly need directors and owners able to think and act strategically. This decision-taking process is part art and part science. Professional directors must understand the science of strategic decisions and know how to use it.

The family business in 2040 by Professor Alberto Gimeno (Lic&MBA 84/PhD 99) Jointly organised by EEI and ESADE Alumni

Launching growth companies by Professor Jan Brinckmann 10 March 2016 and 5 April 2016 - ESADE Barcelona

2 December 2015 - Oviedo The world seems increasingly unpredictable. This suggests a time of transition to new models for society and business – a shift that could easily happen over the next 25 years, and not slowly over a century. Technology, geopolitics, and institutions will all change. Family firms, the dominant form of business, have a responsibility and an opportunity to be agents of this transition. What does this mean for today’s notions of business ownership and family structure? How can family businesses stay close to scientific and societal innovations and benefit from them?

Co-thinking: the (im)possible transformation by Professor Marcel Planellas (PMD 87) and Alfons Cornella (ADE 94)

The talk focused on how to validate business opportunities and the key lessons learned from how to start a growth company. Dr Brinckmann also presented new activities in the realm of entrepreneurship, such as the ESADE Accelerator for Students, and explained how to get involved and outline specific activities for developing the ESADE network.

The major challenges of Spain’s pharmaceutical companies. Strategies to compete in the 21st century (Talk 2) with Professor Alberto Gimeno (Lic&MBA 84/PhD 99)

19 May 2016 - ESADE Barcelona

Jointly organised by EEI and ESADE Alumni

17 May 2016 - ESADE Barcelona Alfons Cornella and Marcel Planellas shared some ideas, they did some co-thinking about corporate transformation. Here in the early 21st century, companies find technology and markets changing at an increasingly rapid pace. Managers have little influence over these levers and can only try to adopt and adapt them as quickly as possible. One lever they can, however, influence, is the necessary transformation of organisations. Many structures and methodologies exist, but this transformation is a difficult task – and impossible for some.

In recent years in the wake of the economic crisis, many companies in Spain including the pharmaceutical industry, have had to adapt and even reinvent themselves by designing new strategies to survive in an increasingly demanding environment.

Strategies for entrepreneurial resource acquisition by Professor Jaume Villanueva

Fail fast, fail soon, fail cheap by Professor Jan Brinckmann

Jointly organised by EEI and ESADE Alumni Entrepreneurship

Jointly organised by EEI and ESADE Creapolis

21 February 2016 - Tel Aviv (Israel) 29 October 2015 - New York City (USA)

24 November 2015 - ESADECREAPOLIS

Gaining access to external resources is often one of the most important activities new ventures must engage in to grow or even survive. It is also one of the most challenging, as potential resource providers (investors or lenders) are not easily persuaded to bet on unproven new organisations often lacking a track record, collateral, a defined market, or a fully developed product or service. Yet many entrepreneurs manage to access the resources they need. How do they do it?

The Lean Start Up method follows this model and represents a new approach that is becoming adopted worldwide to change how companies create and launch their products. The methodology allows shortening the product development cycle by producing a minimum viable prototype in the shortest possible time while validating the idea with customers and potential users. During this workshop assistants learned key aspects, processes, and tools to implement the Lean Start Up methodology. Validate your business hypothesis to achieve the product/service that your customers need.

The focus of the talk was the strategies entrepreneurs use to access external resources. Dr Villanueva drew on his academic research to give a picture of what we know and what we don’t know about entrepreneurial resource acquisition strategies.

Success of German family businesses: practices to learn from with Professor Alberto Gimeno (Lic&MBA 84/PhD 99)

Alberto Gimeno began the presentations by praising the quality of the companies taking part. ‘’Today’s panel is fantastic. Its members represent different generations, business models and roles.’’

Germany is, together with Japan, the country with the oldest, and most developed family companies. The reasons for this success are several and many of them are related to how they manage their family businesses. How have large German family businesses (such as Henkel, Boheringer, and Merck) been successful over generations and maintained their entrepreneurial attitude, professional management, and family commitment?

C4BI (Creativity for Business Innovation) Challenge Led by Professor Marcel Planellas, from the ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute, the Creativity for Business Innovation Challenge (C4BI) is a competition organised by elBullifoundation and ESADE for students at ESADE Business School. The objective of C4BI is to apply the concept of creative process auditing in a business. ‘Creative process auditing is a tool for obtaining the greatest efficiency in innovation and, in particular, for ensuring that this efficiency has longevity,’ explained renowned chef and elBullifoundation founder Ferran Adrià. ‘C4BI is a unique and exciting challenge: we’ll be entering a new world’. Students from ESADE’s MBA, MSc, and BBA programmes participated in the competition: especially students interested in innovation processes and the development of creative abilities, and who have an entrepreneurial mindset. The participating five-person teams (Los Creators, MIE Consulting, Sugar Factory, Comemos LAB and Caldo Molecular) were asked to solve a case study to reach the final round. A panel of judges selected the top five teams as finalists. These teams attended a master class by Ferran Adrià on the Sapiens methodology at elBulliLab. The finalists also visited the Roca Gallery, where they participated in the final part of the challenge: a creative process audit of the company’s ‘W+W’ project. Finally, on 24 November 2015 at the EGarage, the teams defended their findings in front of a panel of expert judges: Ferran Adrià (elBullifoundation); Xavier Torras (Roca Brand Communication Manager); and Josep Franch (Dean of ESADE Business School). After the presentations, the judges selected a winning team.
