sleep safety … advice
Babies don’t come with an inbuilt body clock and at first, day and night will blend together. They will have sensed the difference between night and day in the womb from your movements or stillness, but cannot connect this with light and dark and instead will use their hunger as a sleep cue.
• always place baby on their back to sleep • avoid letting your baby get too hot or too cold by using a room thermometer (16 to 20°C is ideal) • place your baby to sleep in a separate moses basket or crib in the same room as you for the first 6 months • use a new, firm, flat, waterproof mattress • don’t cover your baby’s face or head while sleeping • never sleep on a sofa or in an armchair with your baby • don’t smoke, or let anyone smoke around you or your baby during pregnancy or after the birth
how can you help? Immerse them in the hustle and bustle of normal life in the day, and get out of the house – daily fresh air and daylight will help regulate your baby’s body clock. At nap times, keep the curtains open and don’t minimise noise. At night, do the opposite, and during night feeds keep your voice low, with little stimulation. This contrast will eventually help your baby learn that night-time is for sleeping.
routine matters It is vital to establish a good bedtime routine as it is the foundation for healthy sleep habits for life. Every night, set aside 30 minutes for your routine. Start with a short warm bath, then take your baby straight into the room where they’ll sleep, keeping the lights dim. Dress your baby for bed, then give them a cuddle and a kiss before settling them in their cot. During the early weeks your baby will need a feed right before bed, but in time, try feeding earlier, so they become less dependent on sucking to sleep. Aim to put your baby in their cot slightly awake so they get used to settling themselves.

Moses baskets are ideal for newborns as they’re small and comfortable. They can easily be moved around your home making them perfect for daytime naps or longer sleeps at night. See page 50
Cribs are a smaller version of cots and are suitable for newborns until about six months old (depending on the size of your baby). See page 52
Cots can be used for newborns and will see you through their baby years. Just remember to put your baby in the feet to foot position (your baby’s feet placed at the bottom of the cot, to minimise the risk of them wriggling under the covers).

Cot beds convert into toddler beds when your little one grows bigger, so they’re a great investment. Remember they are slightly bigger than cots so measure your nursery before buying.
Toddler beds are suitable from 18 months old – they’re smaller and closer to the ground than a single bed, so they’re a great transition to a grownup bed. Some toddler beds come with bed guards, or you can buy them separately.

1. Car seats are divided into groups, and it is your child’s weight (not age) that matters. Weigh your child before visiting a mothercare store so we can help you select the correct car seat as per the ECE/R44 standard. i-Size or R129 car seats take into consideration your child’s height. 2. Ensure you are clear on the benefits of keeping your child rearward-facing for as long as possible. There are a number of options once your child is ready to move into a Group 1 car seat and our car seat advisors will give you all the information you need to make this decision. 3. The make and model of your car is also important, so if it’s going to be used in multiple cars, make sure you let our advisors know as not all car seats are compatible with all vehicles.

i-Size i-Size car seats are a new, different kind of car seat which offer your little one a safer way to travel and improved protection in the event of an accident. They make up the first phase of the new European car seat regulation R129, which will eventually take over from the old car seat regulations. i-Size car seats are all ISOFIX so they have less chance of being incorrectly fitted and they provide improved protection at higher forces for side and front impact. With i-Size car seats, which are fitted taking your child’s height into account, your little one has to stay rearward-facing until they’re 15 months old which is safer and helps protect their neck and spine in an accident.
4. Our car seat advisors will demonstrate how to fit your chosen car seat and ensure that you are clear on the features and how to use them, so you’ll be confident on how to use the seat safely when you leave our stores. 5. ISOFIX is the standard system built into all new cars and car seat manufacturers, designed to make installing your child’s car seat quick and easy. With ISOFIX you simply ‘plug in’ a compatible car seat to anchor points in the car.

Mothercare slings are designed to be used for full term healthy babies. For babies under the care of a paediatrician, seek advice before using. Babies should be carried in slings in the same position they would be in if you cradled them in your arms. Baby’s face should be visible at all times and not covered by body or by fabric. Ensure baby’s face is pointing outwards with plenty of ventilation. This also means baby should be carried on the carer’s front, not back. Regularly check that the baby remains in the correct position. Be particularly vigilant when using a sling with a young baby, or a baby with a heavy cold. Always read and follow the instructions and product labelling for the sling. These are designed to inform you how to use the product safely. Remember that all slings are designed to have slightly different features.
• When you first use a baby sling or carrier, please ask someone to help you so that you can practise putting it on and taking it off. Check the sling/carrier on a regular basis to ensure no parts are worn or broken. • Baby should be carried at carer’s chest height and no lower than the waist. Adjust the sling/ carrier to fit the size of the carer and ensure the sling fits both baby and carer securely. • Ensure not to let baby get too hot or cold when using a sling/carrier. Remember, your body also creates warmth for baby. Layered clothing for your baby is ideal. • Make sure you can see baby’s face at all times. Take care to reposition if you cannot check on baby simply by glancing down.

feeding tips Breastfeeding has many benefits both for mums and babies, especially when it comes to protecting them against infections and diseases. Don’t worry if you feel it’s taking a while to get the hang of breastfeeding. Your midwife, health visitor and friends who have breastfed can all be a great support in the early days, and we’ve also got some tips, advice and videos online.

after your baby is born... straight after birth: Your breasts produce a creamy substance called colostrum which provides your baby with early nourishment and antibodies until your milk comes in. Colostrum is very concentrated so your newborn will only need small amounts at first. within the first hour after birth: If you feel up to it, you could try breastfeeding. This can help with the bonding process, and remember, your baby’s mouth should completely cover the areola below the nipple and your nipple should be far back in your baby’s mouth.
2-4 days after birth: Your breasts will start feeling full and this is a sign that your milk has come in. Midwives usually recommend that you feed your baby on demand (whenever they are hungry) at first until breastfeeding is established and you feel comfortable.

Get everything ready before you start – towel, toiletries, flannel, thermometer and whatever your baby will be wearing to bed (plus a clean nappy!). Being organised makes being a parent so much easier.
If your baby cries at bath time, spend 10 minutes playing, giggling and tickling their toes so they feel relaxed before you bathe them.
