What’s new at Sparsholt

Endangered Visayan Hornbills arrive at Sparsholt

Our Animal Health and Welfare Research Centre is now home to a pair of Endangered Visayan Hornbills. Visayan Hornbills are endemic to the Philippines, and it is thought that there are less than 1000 individual birds left in the wild.

These stunning birds form part of a European Breeding Programme for the species, which we are very proud to be able to contribute towards. Visayan Hornbills are one of four species of hornbill housed at the AHWRC. The intelligent and charismatic nature of these birds make them an ideal species for our learners to work with and study.
