WELCOME

FROM SWAMI SWAROOPANANDA As we approach our 50-year anniversary, it is with deep gratitude that we welcome you to the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat. Our mission is to continue to serve the legacy of our Guru, Swami Vishnudevananda, and our Master, Swami Sivananda, by spreading peace, health, and joy through the practice and philosophy of yoga and Vedanta. The ashram here in the Bahamas is an active place—a spiritual home and sanctuary and a center for yogic living, learning, and training that runs 12 months a year, attracting thousands of people from all over the world each year. Every day, we welcome new faces to our shores: guests, students, Karma Yogis — here for a few days, a few weeks, or more. Our Teacher Training Course (TTC) also takes place regularly throughout the year, with students engaged in a deeply transformative 28-day yoga journey, one I recommend be undertaken by everyone who can. This year, we will surpass 40,000 graduates from the TTC since its inception. Swami Vishnudevananda called them peace ambassadors; he said they will go into the world and spread peace because they carry within their hearts the seed of peace. Our lineage is based on a core principle of Unity in Diversity. As Swami Vishnudevananda did before us, we invite a wide range of religious and spiritual teachers, scientists, healers, medical doctors, thought leaders, sacred artists and performers, as well as yoga instructors. In coming together in our diversity and sharing our unique perspectives, teachings, and practices, we begin to discover the oneness that unites us—the oneness that is our true Self. This year, we are honored to welcome many esteemed presenters with much to contribute in sustaining this hope. Alongside our own swamis and senior teachers, we gather so that we can all learn, grow, and expand our own horizons. These are challenging times in the world. Hope for the future lies in the elevation of human consciousness through individual transformation, and yoga provides a path for this transformation. In India in 1957, when Swami Vishnudevananda was given 10 rupees and told by Swami Sivananda, “Go the West, people are waiting,” yoga was practically unknown. Now, there are 800 million people throughout the world who practice yoga—and that number is only growing. This is because yoga changes peoples’ lives for the better in real, practical ways. From our five and a half acres on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, we connect people from all over the world, all walks of life, religions, and backgrounds. We invite you to be one of them. Om shanti, Om peace Swami Swaroopananda, Director

THE SIVANANDA LINEAGE SERVE. LOVE. GIVE. PURIFY. MEDITATE. REALIZE.

The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat Bahamas follows an unbroken lineage of teachers who practice the classical yoga wisdom of Swami Sivananda, which was introduced to the West by his disciple Swami Vishnudevananda. We are part of an ever-growing international organization of Sivananda ashrams and centers (sivananda.org), with the mission to share peace, health, and joy through yoga.

Happiness comes from within. It cannot come from without. —Swami Sivananda

Swami Sivananda (1887 – 1963)

Swami Vishnudevananda (right) with his Master, Swami Sivananda, stand along the banks of the Ganges in Rishikesh, India.

1945 A young member of the Indian army happens upon a pamphlet by Swami Sivananda entitled 20 Important Spiritual Instructions; he is so inspired, he travels to meet him and joins his ashram in 1947, eventually to become Swami Vishnudevananda. 1957 On the instructions of his guru, Swami Vishnudevananda brings the foundations of Sivananda Yoga to the West, with a goal to help heal the physical body and the mind and cure suffering. 1969 Swami Vishnudevananda creates the first yoga teacher training course in the West, which has now trained more than 38,000 certified teachers. Today The International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta organization has nine ashrams and more than 30 centers around the world.

A venerated saint of modern times, Swami Sivananda is the inspiration behind the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres. Following a brilliant career as a medical doctor, Swami Sivananda renounced worldly life and established the Sivananda Ashram and Divine Life Society in Rishikesh, India. He became one of the most prolific yoga teachers who has ever lived, authoring more than 300 books. Although he rarely left Rishikesh, Swami Sivananda’s teachings spread quickly worldwide, continuing to deeply touch and transform the lives of many to this day.

Swami Vishnudevananda (1927 – 1993) Swami Vishnudevananda trained under Swami Sivananda in all aspects of yoga for 10 years, becoming a world authority on yoga. In 1957, Swami Sivananda sent Swami Vishnudevananda to spread the teachings of yoga in the West, where he founded and directed the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres and created the first Yoga Teacher Training Course to empower individuals to be ambassadors of peace through Swami Sivananda’s yoga teachings. A tireless campaigner for world peace, a master of Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga, he authored the now classic books The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga and Meditation and Mantras.

Unity in Diversity

Yoga Is a Spiritual Path

Sivananda Yoga is rooted in the ancient yoga and Vedanta traditions of India. It brings the practitioner to the recognition of the oneness of existence, the unity underlying the diversity of creation. Through the yogic practices, including asanas, pranayama, and meditation, one attains inner peace and harmony with all of life.

Practice

A Daily Practice for Inner Peace Sivananda Yoga gives practitioners the skills for integrating yoga into their everyday lives. Practice of yoga asanas, pranayama, and other daily routines promotes a healthy flow of prana in the energy body, continually deepens one’s practice, and ultimately creates life transformation from the inside out.

WHAT IS AN ASHRAM? Traditionally, an ashram is a spiritual hermitage, a place for spiritual study by a community of residents. Like monasteries, ashrams are usually found in places of great beauty, away from the bustle of everyday life, and rich in life-force energies. Ashrams offer a truly unique setting to immerse in yoga practice and be exposed to timeless wisdom teachings. The Sivananda ashram in the Bahamas is both a place of study and retreat as well as a lively education center that is maintained by a staff of devoted yogis and spiritual teachers. People come here from around the world to deepen their yoga practice and experience a yogic lifestyle, supported by the abundant energies of the ocean, sun, trees, and plants. In the tradition of Swami Sivananda’s ashram, we are open to everyone and actively promote unity in diversity, welcoming people from all walks of life for short and long stays, while also serving as a spiritual home for everyone.

As You Think So You Become Swami Hridyananda Tuition: $275. Add 6 nights’ accommodation

Swami Sivananda taught that “thoughts are living things.” Any thought that crosses the mind of a person gives rise to vibrations that travel far and wide. Learn how to use thoughtpower for healing, to increase creativity and organization, and to overcome habitual and intrusive thoughts. Through theory and practice you will discover how to align your body, food choices, and surroundings to increase your thought-power. Most of all, you will learn how yoga stops the root function of the mind, which is thought. When thought is transcended, intuition functions and Self-knowledge supervenes.

When several people join together and practice Sankirtan [chanting the Lord’s name], a huge spiritual current, or Mahashakti, is generated. This purifies the heart of the aspirants and elevates them to the sublime heights of Divine ecstasy. —Swami Sivananda, The Essence of Yoga Devotional singing is a widespread practice in religions and spiritual traditions worldwide. The Yoga of Eating: Healing your Relationship with Food Petra Rakebrandt

Tuition: $368. Add 8 nights’ accommodation

Tuition: $296. Add 5 nights’ accommodation

Not only is meditation beneficial, it is indispensable for attaining Self-realization and spiritual liberation. And yet, it is so hard to control the mind. In the Bhagavad Gita, Arjuna, the mightiest warrior of his time, had the same problem. He felt that it is easier to control the wind than the mind. In the Gita, Lord Krishna is teaching Arjuna (and through him, us) how to meditate. Join us for this inspiring and practical course and learn how to meditate by following the instructions of Lord Krishna himself.

Regain a healthy relationship with food through immersion in the yogic philosophy of eating — for nutrition and joy! We don’t always eat simply to satisfy hunger; we often turn to food for stress relief, comfort, and reward. In this course, you will learn how to recognize your personal triggers and how your mood affects food choices. You will also learn recipes for smoothies and vegetarian dishes that alleviate cravings. Other experiences — and take-home tool kit — include meditation, Reiki, ThetaHealing®, journaling, exercise, and mindful eating techniques.

You Are the Universe: Conversations Between

Deepak Chopra and Menas Kafatos

Join Deepak and Menas in a special setting just before the release of their new book. This program explores emerging scientific thought that humans live in a participatory universe where our individual mind and consciousness actively shape the fabric of reality. Unlike the prevailing belief that the universe is a cold, empty void where human life is barely a speck in the cosmos, each of us is actually a co-creator of the reality that extends to the vastest reaches of time and space. This seemingly impossible proposition aligns with yogic science and the teachings of the world’s spiritual traditions and offer tantalizing possibilities for the well-being of humans and society. Deepak Chopra, MD, FACP, founder of the Chopra Foundation and cofounder of The Chopra Center for Wellbeing, is a world-renowned pioneer in integrative medicine and personal transformation. Prolific author of more than 80 books, with 22 New York Times best sellers, Dr. Chopra has received numerous awards and honorariums, including the 2010 GOI Peace Award. Menas Kafatos, PhD, is the Fletcher Jones Endowed Professor of Computational Physics at Chapman University and an acclaimed scholar of climate change, quantum theory, consciousness, and monistic philosophies. What Does Swami Sivananda Teach? Swami Medhananda Puri

Foundations of Vedanta Swami Medhananda Puri

Swami Sivananda’s teachings are a call to all sincere souls seeking deeper meaning and a higher purpose in their lives. He opened the door to the pursuit of spiritual evolution within the context of everyday life through practical teachings relevant to all. Among the topics to be explored in this program are the true source of happiness; the nature of reality as God; the importance of physical health; the fundamental ethics of yoga; the pursuit of spiritual life within daily existence; and the imperative to move more and more towards God.

The Advaita Vedanta is one of the greatest philosophies of India. It boldly declares the underlying unity of all creation. The teachings of Vedanta, when applied to daily life, transform one’s life and open vistas to eternal bliss. According to the teachings of the Vedanta philosophy, our true nature is bliss and, therefore, all we need to do to bathe in eternal bliss is to remove our ignorance regarding our nature. Come explore these important teachings taught by an authentic bearer of this knowledge.

Each year at the ashram, we are blessed by the indepth teachings on yoga philosophy by Swami Medhananda Puri. This year, he will teach the Mandukya Upanishad in daily classes that meet from 8:30am – 10:00am. The Mandukya Upanishad is from Atharvaveda and is the shortest of all the Upanishads, consisting of only 12 mantras. This study will also include the Karika written by Gaudapada, the Guru of Shankaracharya.

Neuroscience Symposium

From Brain to Cosmos and Back Eben Alexander Amit Goswami Stephen Kaplan Prantik Kundu Swami Brahmananda

Eben Alexander, MD, is a neurosurgeon and the author of Proof of Heaven, the story of his own near-death experience, which convinced him of the reality of an afterlife. Chairman of Eternea, he speaks worldwide and works to reconcile medical science with spirituality.

What is the relationship between consciousness and the brain? This symposium brings together leading scientists and scholars to explore cutting-edge thinking on the nature of consciousness and current findings and directions in scientific thinking and research.

Amit Goswami, PhD, is a retired professor of theoretical physics at the University of Oregon in Eugene. A visionary thinker and pioneer of the new paradigm of science called “science within consciousness,” he has written many popular books including The Self-Aware Universe.

Neuropsychology measures brain processes — to understand thought, emotions, disease, intention, etc., in terms of neural processes and neural correlates. This methodology tells us that mind/consciousness/ subjective experience is nothing but brain processes. From this point of view, there is no consciousness, no mind, and no soul, independent of the brain; when the brain stops, mind and consciousness end as well.

Stephen Kaplan is a professor of religious studies at Manhattan College, specializing in Indian and comparative religions. He is the author of two books, has published numerous articles in leading journals, and is working on a book titled Advaita Vedanta and the Neurosciences. Prantik Kundu is a doctoral candidate studying neuroscience with fMRI technology in collaboration with the Brain Mapping Unit at the University of Cambridge and the Section on Functional Imaging Methods at the National Institute of Mental Health in Washington DC.

This symposium will not only explore these very realistic possibilities but will also entertain radically different perspectives on the nature of consciousness proposed by some physicists and others who explore neardeath experiences. From these perspectives, the brain does not set the limits of consciousness, but rather the brain is only the correlate of embodied consciousness.

YOGA VACATION PROGRAM

Yoga Therapy for Balance and Health Brant Passalacqua

YOGA VACATION PROGRAM

June 11 – 13

The Individual and Ultimate Consciousness: Chapter 13 of the Bhagavad Gita Swami Prakashananda These discourses will explore the metaphysical foundations of Vedanta through chapter 13 of the Bhagavad Gita to show how ethics in Hinduism is directly connected to metaphysics. In this chapter, Lord Krishna reveals the distinct difference between the physical body and the immortal soul. He explains that the physical is transitory and perishable whereas the soul is immutable and eternal. Krishna also gives precise knowledge about the individual soul and the ultimate soul.

Come into greater balance, integration, and health using a holistic model of healing and self-growth. In yoga philosophy, the koshas are layers (literally “sheaths”) that move from the grossest layer of the physical body to the more subtle layers of the prana, the mind, the intellect and the bliss-permeated sheath, ultimately providing a framework for conceptualizing ourselves. In this program, you will discover how to work with the koshas using asana, pranayama, and meditation techniques that are efficient and easily combined with your existing practice. Brant Passalacqua, a trained yoga therapist, is the creator of Breathing Deeply Yoga Therapy and Peaceful Weight Loss™ through Yoga. He has been sharing the healing arts since 2002, after overcoming obesity and a life-threatening autoimmune illness. Brant works with individuals suffering from a wide variety of diseases.

Swami Prakashananda is founder and acharya of the Chinmaya Mission of Trinidad and Tobago and travels extensively giving spiritual discourse. He met Swami Chinmayananda while studying for a bachelor’s degree in Toronto, Canada, and soon joined the Chinmaya Mission. He studied scripture in Mumbai, India, and taught for several years in India and Nepal before returning to his native Trinidad.
