Hrair Sarkissian: The Other Side of Silence

First retrospective exhibition of one of the most prominent conceptual photographers of our time. Using life-size photos, the SyrianArmenian artist Hrair Sarkissian lays bare the wounds of conflicts. The ‘Other Side of Silence’ displays important works from the past fifteen years of his career as well as new assignments. Music and architecture speak the same language of rhythm, contrast, proportion, dynamism, and harmony. Composers and architects have been inspiring one another for centuries. Music also has its own architecture: from the design of instruments to the aesthetics of the musical notation itself. In the exhibition, the design of space and sound is explored with the help of interactive installations, art, film and music, architectural drawings, and scale models.

‘FAMOUS’ by Terry O’Neill

This retrospective exhibition of the British celebrity photographer Terry O’Neill (1938–2019) presents more than 125 portraits of international music legends, film stars, and fashion icons, predominantly from the sixties and seventies. Terry O’Neill is one of the world’s most iconic and influential photographers of the past 60 years. Members of the British royal family and prominent politicians have also stood in front of his camera. With his informal, intimate photos, he reveals the human side of celebrities.

The photographer Frans Grummer was a freelance photographer based at the Vrijthof from 1955 to 1972. He died in 2021 leaving behind an impressive archive containing thousands of negatives. In addition to interesting advertisement photos for companies such as Mosa, and Sphinx, more than 4,000 portraits depicting people from Maastricht were found. Maastricht Antiquarian Book & Print Fair

Chaim van Luit will be presenting a new installation, about the past and present of mining, in the showcase at the Glaspaleis (Glass Palace). For Chaim van Luit, the physical search is essentially the work of art. He collects unique traces of human activity and sometimes also that of animals. Almost 300 objects illustrate the centuries-old and worldwide fascination for bags: from the iconic Brillant bag by Delvaux and Kelly bag by Hermès to tiny vanity cases, military backpacks, and luxurious travelling cases. The exhibition not only considers the manufacturing process of the bag but also the ingredients that determine its success. After all, a bag not only has a functional purpose but is also an expression of identity and status.

A world full of cars – for some people a utopia, for others a nightmare. Olaf Mooij (1958, Rotterdam) sheds light on our close relationship with the car and the consequences of it through sculptures and installations. ‘People have a personal connection with cars. They would do anything for them.’ The exhibition includes a brief history of the car, and of the only Dutch car manufacturer.
