Twenty thousand tons of cement to Yilport Gävle
Ambassador Orla O´Hanrahan declared the new terminal opened with a bottle of Champagne
Irelands ambassador to Sweden, Orla O’Hanrahan, was in great spirits when she inaugurated Yilport Gävles new cement terminal. It stores imported irish cement used to continiously stabilize the Boliden-mine in Garpenberg that produce an ore-mix of zinc, lead, silver, copper and gold. - We contacted several Swedish ports and choosed Yilport Gävle because of their high productivity and Gavle is also quite close to Garpenberg, says Conor O’Riain, CEO at the Irish producer Ecocem.
The cement from Ecocem is manufactured with significantly lower CO2 emissions than traditional cement, and the company sees steady growth and great opportunities to broaden the Swedish market. For Yilport Gavle the cement terminal means a ship every two months and 2-3 job-days for two employees at every arrival.
Mid Swedens´Chamber of Commerce Visited Yilport Gavle When thirty companies gathered at Mid Swedens Chamber of Commerces autumn meeting they started with a visit at Yilport Gävle. Given that many of the members are located in the west inland ”Dalarna” the invitation to the meeting emphasized at that yearly 18 000 trucks and hundreds of trains from Dalarna arrive at Yilport Gävle. Yilports guide Magnus Östman further developed that theme when the bus went through the CFS terminal where large quantities of
steel from SSAB in Dalarna are stuffed in containers to be shipped world wide. Vital goods to inland paper mills and along the east coast is other examples of Yilport Gavles´importance to large and industrial important companies in the mid Sweden region. For many it was the first visit to the port, and questions were, among many others, asked about the new fairway and future expansion of the container terminal.
Hapag-Lloyd container depot at Yilport Stockholm Nord Hapag-Lloyd has chosen Stockholm Nord for handling of empty containers. When the containers are emptied after arrival in Stockholm they are loaded on
the fixed rail link to Yilport Gavle, where there´s a comprehensive need for empty containers.
Yilport Gävle´s new Training Center
This autumn Yilport Gävle opened its training center aimed at improving not only our interal teams cabability but grooming the future. The container terminal have space for instructor led training, and e-learning where students use computers and e-learning applications.
Morgan Gustavsson, HR Manager at Yilport Gävle
- Training and education in-house is more flexible and quicker to arrange. It’s always available when we need it, and it gives us a proper insight if our employees have the skills needed, says Yilport Gävles HR Manager Morgan Gustavsson.
It is packed in the container terminal conference room when the instructor Per Arne Persson teach about signallers in the harbor. The signaller supervises the loading and unloading is done safely, and the man can as well be a woman. The investment in the training center is not just about training of Yilports own staff, but is also a way to find new employees. On this day, 13 of 19 participants came from “outside”.
- The port is a hazardous environment, and safety is always the priority, says Morgan Gustavsson. Yilport Gävle’s Thomas Bocian has a long time history with the port, and now he educates himself to be a future instructor at the signaller education. Next step is studies of the new STS crane simulator that rotates between the Ports of Sweden’s member companies.
- Cooperation with the Swedens National Employment Service is important. We also cooperate with expertise from the Transport Workers’ Federation and the Transport Industry, says Morgan Gustavsson. The range of courses cover all types of port jobs in eg all kinds of trucks, reach stackers and cranes. It´s advanced training. Other times basic training of new employees or those that can be considered for employment.

Two years of milestones at Yilport Oslo
T
he past 22 months have been eventful as Yilport Oslo has settled into the operation. Several key milestones have been accomplished including, but not limited to, consolidation of all operations on Sjursøya (closing of Ormsund container area), commissioning of two ship-to-shore gantry cranes and eight rubber-tyre gantry cranes, development of CFS services, commencing VGM services, and installation of automated gate procedures. Vessel and gate productivity are now at levels not achieved prior to Yilport’s arrival. Terminal security has been greatly enhanced with new access control systems and a sophisticated system of cameras covering the entire facility. The terminal, along with Oslo Havn, have also made significant progress in terms of the environmental health of the operation. Measures including the installation of two Ultra-Quiet ship-toshore gantry cranes from Kone Crane, eight “zero-emission” rubber tire gantry cranes as well as the deployment of new Kalmar Reach Stackers with K technology reducing emissions and noise have reduced emissions and sound pollution coming from the operation.
T
hese efforts, do however, require additional investment. The above noted investments are not supported by current market handling rates which are far below market rates in neighboring Nordic countries. To overcome this dichotomy in operating costs and market rates, Yilport must introduce price increases. Yilport Oslo will introduce an Import Processing Fee for 2017. This will be a fee of NOK 180/full import container. This fee will be applied universally to all laden import containers. Yilport Oslo feels the increase targeted on full Import Containers is a fair adjustment. The efficiencies and developments the terminal is providing are providing efficiencies for the users. Vessels are in and out quicker, waiting time costs are reduced, truck idle time is reduced. While the rate increase may not be popular in a stretched shipping market, the efficiencies provided due translate to savings within the local supply chain. Eryn Dinyovszky, Yilport Nordic Manager
Container-year 2016 bewildering good at Yilport Gävle 2016 is very likely the best year ever for Yilport Gävle Container Terminal in Gävle. - The trend has consistently indicated higher volumes. Even before I have the final full-year figures, it´s clear that we will reach well over the more than 170 000 TEUs in 2015, says Yilport Gävle’s CEO Fredrik Rönnqvist. With a strained situation for container shipments globally the activities of the Gävle Container Terminal although expands. The focus now is to keep the new volumes, and enhance them by
further strengthen the focus on the flexibility and high level of service that paved the way for success.

YILPORT INTERNATIONAL Q4-2016 NEWSLETTER
Executive Vice President & COO Mehmet YILDIRIM
Exclusive Interview With Robert Yuksel YILDIRIM YILPORT is interested in acquiring Ports America terminals portfolio. Can you tell us about the story so far? Ports America is the largest terminal operator and stevedore in the United States, operating in more than 42 ports and 80 locations. We presented our tender offer for Ports America in December 2015, and are in the second tour of offers. The company was on our radar for the last two years. If purchased, Ports America portfolio will elevate YILPORT Holding closer to its target of being ranked among top 10 global terminal operators by 2025. YILPORT will rapidly but steadily rise to the list, and in Ports America case, be ranked at the 8th place. How do investments in the US market fit in YILPORT’s overall growth strategy? YILPORT holding has two separate growth strategies. One is for developing and emerging countries, and one is reserved for already developed countries. We are constantly looking for new opportunities in both of those two markets. Since we observe the ever-increasing consolidation and new alliances among liners, we believe consolidation must take place in the port and container terminal industries as well. Single-terminal port operators have no power to negotiate with the big monster container lines. In order to be in the game, you need to be an international terminal operator. We believe potential mergers and acquisitions in the United States will provide an extra boost. What is the current situation of ports management business in the US? The ports are not so profitable in the United States right now. This is due to lack of new investments in infrastructure, superstructure, automation, and new technology. As far as we can see, there is a great growth potential in the United States terminals, only after making necessary investments in the ports. That will trigger profitability. YILPORT is very active in Europe and Latin America, continuously investing in ports, and we observe that ports in the United States are unfortunately 20 years behind in technology, compared to major ports in Europe or Asia. How would you reverse that and what would be the first line of investments in the current US terminals?
Productivity, equipment, terminal operating systems, crane technology, gate information a lot of things are lacking in the US. To improve conditions, the US terminals have to invest in infrastructure and technology. What kind of a deal would suit YILPORT’s growth in the US ports managements industry? I want to be in the driving seat so that I can make all the necessary investments in terms of equipment, infrastructure, software and business relationships. In order to do that, I need to have majority control. I would not accept anything less than a 51% shareholding in Ports America, and could be willing to buy 100% control if the price were right. The unions in the US are providing a challenge for terminal operators. How do you see the situation of labor unions? We are ready for the challenge, and I believe YILPORT’s operational experience is an asset for the US market. If I compare YILPORT with financial investors, I can say that we have the upper hand because we come from the industrial side. Most of our ports are unionized, so we have more experience working with the unions. It is a difficult challenge in the US, but we are always cooperative with the unions. I am not looking forward to cutting jobs, or taking anything away from the unions.
GLOBAL
Will growth by acquisitions be the case for YILPORT in the upcoming years? Acquisitions will be on our radar for the time being. To reach 2025 goals, YILPORT Holding has to perform continuous organic and inorganic growth. To accomplish that goal, we are conducting talks with tens of ports. These are in Europe, North America, Latin America and Africa regions. On the other hand, we plan to offer 20% to 30% shares of YILPORT Holding to foreign investors as minority shareholders and change partnership structure in order to finance our growth strategy in a healthy manner. Funding from the initial offering will be rerouted to acquisition of new ports. Finally, how do you evaluate YILPORT’s long-term business strategy? Our seasoned management team designated a strategy of solid growth and expansion at YILPORT for the next 10 years. My dream remains strong, and our journey to be one of the top 10 international terminal operators continue. YILPORT will reach its goal of operational excellence within the existing portfolios throughout Turkey, Iberia, Scandinavia and Americas coupled with our push towards being a top ten port operator by 2025.
Robert Yuksel YILDIRIM Chairman of YILPORT Holding Inc.
What is next for YILPORT after finalizing acquisitions? We are always looking for new projects. We welcome new terminals in our portfolio towards our goal to be ranked among top 10 international port operators by 2025. As part of this objective, we strive to enhance our global presence further. Our mergers and acquisitions team at YILDIRIM Group consists of 40 colleagues, and they evaluate around 200-300 projects annually. The number of port and terminal projects are about 10-15, and we aim to realize only 1-3 brownfield terminal deals per year. YILPORT INTERNATIONAL Q4-2016 NEWSLETTER
