Acknowledgements Water features are the jewels on the crown, raising ordinary poolscapes to new levels of sophistication and beauty. Taking their cue from the pool, the home’s architecture, and the natural world that surrounds the property, pool designers and builders from around the world have created fabulous pool settings that get their amazing personalities from the finishing touches. We thank these professionals for allowing us to share their work with you--be prepared to be inspired!

On the Cover: Looking natural from every angle, this personal, manmade sanctuary includes Oklahoma flagstone, moss rock, and different-sized boulders in its makeup. The spa and waterfall work together, creating a focal point that does not divert attention completely away from the natural beauty of the setting. Water

Features

A

great pool design is often realized by the water within—–its appearance, reflections, and how it refracts light and color. Water

features create both visual and acoustic appeal. They can offer a welcoming feeling of the islands, an upscale urban sophistication, or a captivating aura of drama when lit up at night. No matter which water features are chosen, today’s builders can move water—–and you—–in astonishing ways. Leave your pre-conceived ideas behind, though. There are a number of water features, and not all of them are what you think. Based on a design’s overall concept, a pool builder may combine one, two, or many types of water features, or they may custom create a novel technique just for your project. Here are a few ideas to start your wish list.

Combining custom-drawn art and the energy stemming from flowing water, this all-tile masterpiece found in an extra small backyard also features a spa on its opposite side. Creative Environments, Alamo, Calif.; client: Kevin Leader

popular choice, waterfalls usually become a poolscape’s focal point.

From rock waterfalls to sheetfalls, there are a variety of options. Listen to your designer and builder, who will offer pros and cons about each type and recommend which one is best for your property and the proposed design.

WATER SPOUTS

Poetry in Motion

S

conces are decorative objects

mounted on a wall from which a narrow stream of water flows. They can be as simple as a small rosette or as dramatic as a lion’s head, and they are often included in Mediterranean-style pools. Scuppers create a slightly different effect as water flows across a small ledge before falling down into the pool. Waterwalls create a ripple effect as water trickles down the wall’s surface. Aquatic Technology, Morgan Hill, Calif.
