APLAND JEWELERS Apland Jewelers approaches the sale of a ring with artistry, experience, and consideration of what’s best for our clients. We take our client’s ideas and craft them into original jewelry that signifies the most important moments in their lives. We don’t just sell rings, we make them. Owned by veteran jeweler, gemologist and metalsmith Ken Apland. Ken has worked 39 years full time as a designer goldsmith, and is one of the most highly credentialed gemologists in the Northwest, holding the titles of Master Graduate Gemologist, Certified Gemologist Appraiser, and Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain. It’s often assumed that custom jewelry costs more than mass produced from the big box stores. However, by manufacturing and selling direct to our clients, our custom pieces are often less expensive that branded designer lines. The fact is, it’s increasingly rare to interact with a jeweler like Apland’s. The old world skills like hand-made fine wire filigree or hand engraving have increasingly been replaced by more ‘efficient’ modern techniques, yet hand done work is obvious and cannot be matched by cast in place substitutes. We have welcomed new technology into our studio as well, with CAD/ CAM and 3-D printing done in house, allowing the best of new world and old world techniques to let us bring whichever process is best to a project. Our promise to our clients is quality that is second to none. There are no shortcuts to quality workmanship, no easy way to make something last a lifetime. We are very picky! Many jewelers can claim to be bigger, cheaper, or have fancy pants branding, but assuredly few can make good on our promise of quality.

AN INTIMATE
A small, intimate wedding has loads of romance to it — as well as many other advantages. While the large wedding has become a staple of contemporary American culture, the small wedding is making a comeback, and for good reason. Before you set your final budget and guest list, consider the following motivations for staying small.
GET MARRIED WHERE YOU WANT
Think of all the gorgeous venues you could either price yourself out of, or not be able to fit into due to the size of your party. Keeping your guest list small gives you more options. It also opens up venues that don’t traditionally host weddings — or charge “wedding prices.” Think of places such as an art museum, a zoo or a greenhouse.
SPEND MORE QUALITY TIME WITH GUESTS
An intimate wedding typically has less than 75 guests, which means you will have a lot more time to spend with each person. Walk around to each table and personally thank people for coming. Depending on the size of your party, consider seating everyone at one long table — creating an intimate dinner party atmosphere.
DO MORE WITH YOUR MONEY
Small weddings can cost less, saving you thousands. Alternatively, you could spend the same amount as you would have set aside for a larger affair and splurge on the luxurious extras you want most. A smaller wedding can be a way for you to ensure your guests have a night they will always remember, and that you have the wedding you always dreamed about.
PUT YOUR MONEY TOWARD YOUR FUTURE
Your wedding day is a magical day and will most likely always hold a distinct place in your heart. But remember, it is just one day. Hosting a smaller wedding means you are free to put additional money toward future goals, such as putting a down payment on a house or saving to start a family. Remember, your lives together are just beginning.
#GWMDIY TIP Do it yourself !
MEMORY TREE: Tell your love story with pictures at your outdoor wedding! Grab some string and some photographs, and hang them around a tree to give people an inside look into how you two fell in love.

DRESSING YOUR
Bridesmaids
HAVE KEY INFO IN HAND
You should know your wedding colors and have your venue booked and your own gown ordered. All of these items will impact the style and hue of the gowns you choose. Will you be choosing the gown or have you decided to allow your maids to choose their own (with your final approval, of course)? Do you want your maids in the same style? Will they be wearing various colors or hues of the same color? Know the answers to each of these questions before stepping foot inside a bridal salon.
START WITH PICTURES
Not everyone is going to have the same budget, and a compassionate bride-tobe will be mindful of this. Unless you are picking up the tab, don’t choose a pricey gown. Not everyone views your wedding as the investment you see it as.

BE FLEXIBLE
Look through many photos before you begin shopping. Also keep in mind, as much as you love them, your friends are not models (unless they are) — so what you see in photos will look different in person and on each individual person.
CONSIDER COST
Nothing can cause more drama than choosing bridesmaids dresses — especially if you have a large bridal party or opinionated attendants. The smart bride understands that this aspect of her wedding is less about her and more about her maids.
This applies both to your expectations of the dress and your maids. Keep in mind that the color you see in a magazine might be slightly different in person. Be flexible in terms of what is will look good on different skin tones. Remember, as much as you might love a color, above all, you want everyone to look their best.
ORDER AT THE RIGHT TIME
Many dresses require one to three months to ship, so be sure to allow for this. After the dresses arrive, you also will need time for your maids to pick them up (unless they are being shipped directly) and for the gowns to be altered. So don’t wait too long before checking this item off the bridal to-do list!
Use high heel attachments to keep you from sinking into grass during an outdoor wedding. There’s nothing worse then a wobbly walk down the aisle. While you’re at it, put a basket out for your guests! Get yours at www.thesolemates.com.

SOMETHING
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. This sweet line from an Old English rhyme has morphed into a beloved and timeless tradition for brides in many cultures. It remains to be as popular as ever, and brides who refuse to allow a hint of bad luck in their nuptials (or just swoon over the tradition) continue to incorporate the hue in their special day.
Blue
JEWELRY AND GEMSTONES
A sparkly way to incorporate blue into your bridal look is by wearing a piece of jewelry or hair comb with blue stones in it. Ask friends and family members if they own anything that would work. Depending on the age of the piece, you could knock out old, borrowed and blue with one item!
ACCESSORIES
If you are more of a minimalist when it comes to your jewelry choices, incorporate the color with other accessories. Blue shoes make a confident statement. A blue clutch or pale blue ribbon around your bridal bouquet make good options if you are looking for a less permanent way to add the color to your attire. Both can be set aside come reception time.
IN YOUR DRESS
Color has never been more popular in wedding gowns. If you are a bold bride, consider one in a blue hue. Many bridal gown designers have embraced the lighter shades. You can find gowns with blue lining, tulle and lace.
STITCHING AND EMBROIDERY
Utilizing a bit of embroidery — such as stitching a phrase in blue thread on a vintage hankie or a heart in blue on the inner lining of your bridal gown — is a discreet way to incorporate the color blue into your special day. This allows you to integrate the color without requiring a full commitment to having the color overwhelm your bridal look.

Perfect
Congratulations, you’re engaged! This is such an exciting time as you and your now fiance join together and make plans to share the rest of your lives together. After celebrating with friends and loved ones, one of the first things you will want to do is capture the moment in engagement photos. You’ve most likely seen engagement photos before — the good, the bad and the outright cringe-worthy. To avoid the latter, consider the following elements.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
Choosing a local photographer is key. Look through portfolios and other engagement sessions each professional has photographed. Keep in mind that many photographers include an engagement photo shoot in their wedding photo package, so you will save in the long run if you book the same photographer for your wedding as your engagement session.
SCHEDULE EARLY
There are many benefits to snapping your engagement photos as early as possible. Not only will you want to capture the moment while your emotions of excitement are at their peak, but if you have them in hand early, you can incorporate them into your savethe-date cards and your wedding website or publish it with an engagement announcement in the local paper. Even if you choose to do none of these things, it will be one task complete. This will give you the free time to focus your attention elsewhere later — when you will need to make many decisions very quickly.
CHOOSE A STYLE
Your engagement photos should reflect who you and your fiance are as a couple. You, your fiance and your photographer should discuss overall style and location, as well as any outfit changes you might have planned. Keep in mind how you plan to use the photos, as well as who will want them. Think of what you wouldn’t want hanging on your grandmother’s wall.
PLAN YOUR OUTFITS
Stick with styles that complement one another and stay within the same color pallet. You also want to avoid looking like a “matching set.” Many brides-to-be incorporate white attire into their engagement sessions, which is a classic choice and allows the groom to choose colors he is comfortable in, as everything matches white.
#GWMDIY TIP Do it yourself !
PHOTO BOOTH: Make it personal and make a DIY photo booth with your wedding information for your guests to snap a memorable moment. Spice it up with added accessories for your guests to use, like fun glasses & mardi gras beads.

SummerReady
There are many advantages to getting married in the summer. For starters, It’s easier for people to take off work and the weather is more consistent. Make your wedding stand out by incorporating some of the following details.
SELF-SERVE ICE CREAM BAR
Both whimsical and refreshing, a snow cone cart or ice cream bar puts a new twist on wedding desserts. They also keep guests cool as a cucumber on a sultry summer day. Check with party rental companies to see what options they can offer.
SIGNATURE COCKTAILS
You can have a signature cocktail no matter the season of your wedding. But a crisp cocktail in a bright color screams summer — not to mention many fruits and veggies are in season and at their height of flavor. Work with a local bartender to find out what’s in season to craft the best drink to reflect your tastes
LAWN GAMES
The summer wedding season brings many an outdoor affair. Let guests make their own fun by offering a selection of lawn games croquet and lawn dice, which work well with players sporting formal wear.
SPARKLERS
When things get late and it’s time to take your leave, do it in style by handing out sparklers for guests to light and line your path.
A RIVERSIDE LOCALE
Nothing says summertime more than a riverside wedding or a lawn wedding by the beautiful Columbia River.
BRIGHT BOUQUETS
Summer was made for bold colors — and Mother Nature agrees! Choose flowers in vivid colors like red, pink or yellow. Pick large blooms like peonies, hydrangeas or sunflowers. No matter what you decide to incorporate into your summer wedding, remember to always get quotes from as many local vendors as possible. Doing so will save money and uncover unique ideas that may help your special day stand out from the summer wedding crowd.

gorgeous weddings 101:
HoneymoonPacking Your wedding will be beautiful and something you will remember for you entire life, but there is a small part of you that will be relieved to have the stress of planning such a major event behind you and looking forward to some well-earned relaxation. No matter if you’ve planned a relaxing week on the beach, adventure in the mountains or a quick city getaway, you want to make sure you bring everything you could possibly need.
MAKE A LIST
Making a list is the first step to ensuring nothing important gets left behind. The key is not to make your list in one sitting or just a few days before departure. You need time to come back to it. Choose things that mix and match well, and that perhaps you can get more than one use out of if you will be gone for several days.
CONSIDER GOING CARRY-ON ONLY
Not having to check any luggage makes traveling so much easier and saves you precious time! Think about it. Would you rather be pacing around a luggage carousel or be that much closer to sipping mai tais at the beachside bar? Try packing versatile pieces for your trip, or visit a local luggage store for things like pack-flat toiletry kits and packing cubes that can save serious room in your suitcase.
CHECKING A BAG
No matter how inconvenient, there are some bags you just need to check. Maybe your honeymoon is an extended trip or you will be hitting several destinations in varying climates. Whatever the reason, checking at least one bag might be your best bet. If this is the situation, planning your carry-on actually becomes more important in case your checked bag doesn’t arrive with you. Consider adding travel insurance to make sure you’re covered. Always pack at least one spare outfit, comfortable flats, a swimsuit and another spare outfit appropriate for dinner. This should get you through the first few days without your checked luggage before it is either found and delivered to you, or give you enough time to purchase replacements of essential items at your destination.
