FALL/WINTER 2018

Fall

weddings

Fall’s cooler — but not too cold — weather begs us to be outside and enjoy it. Given the glorious color in the trees, taking your vows outside may be the way to go.

Cover it up

Holding the ceremony outside is beautiful, but it also subjects you and your guests to the vagaries of the weather. Plan for a covered area nearby, whether it be a structure or a tent, that can hold everyone. If you’re going the tent route, carefully consider the space and determine whether you need a large pole tent, which also comes with a dramatic roofline, or a smaller frame tent. Also ask for tent walls in case of rain.

Think of the weather

Beware of temps

Be mindful of vendors

Snuggle up

Let your florist, caterer and all other vendors know upfront you’re doing an outdoor ceremony and where. If possible, have them visit the site so they can be sure to offer you their best service there. Try to think of things like where the staff can change and rest, where the kitchen facilities are, any electrical needs and if there are enough restrooms on hand for all your guests plus vendor employees.

Keeping warm in fall

Get cozy at your fall wedding by using these tips to keep you and your guests warm and comfortable throughout the event, especially if your big day is later in the fall towards the winter.

Hot beverage bar

Make one of your beverage stations a hot bar that serves coffee, hot chocolate, hot cider or other warm beverages. Give your guests plenty of garnishes and mix-ins for variety. Also offer virgin drinks for children and those who don’t drink.

Offer guests favors like mittens, gloves or scarves. Scatter blankets around the venue, especially if your ceremony is outdoors. Larger items, like pashminas, make beautiful bridesmaids gifts that will be welcome both at the ceremony and after.

Set the mood

Nothing says hygge — a Danish word meaning cozy and comfortable — like a variety of warm, flickering candles. Pick both colors on your palette and colors that complement, and make sure to choose a variety of sizes and heights for visual appeal. Keep all of them unscented, however, you don’t want to overwhelm the event or bother guests with allergies. You can also choose candle holders that complement your decor. Metallic finishes up the warmth factor. If you’re worried about so many open flames, look for LED candles with flicker and flash just like the real thing but without the heat.

5 #GWM

Fall is gorgeous, but it can also mean sudden drops or rises in temperature that make it feel more

Some decadent but fun ideas include shaped marshmallows, chocolate covered stirring sticks or spoons and favors that recall the event, like personalized mugs or packets of hot cocoa mix.

FALL/WINTER 2018

A cooling breeze can be just the thing, unless it sweeps your guest books, escort cards and any other paper across the grounds. Make sure to use paperweights or ribbons to keep everything in its place. Also consider the effect the sun will have on delicate flower arrangements and on your guests. Don’t leave either hanging around under the rays for too long.

like winter or summer. Ask an event company to also supply outdoor heaters for chilly days or fans if its too warm. In either case, offer warm or cool drinks pre-ceremony to help keep your guests comfortable.

Autumn Fall is rich with flavor and food-centric holidays. Let your wedding be the same by picking unforgettable, edible favors found all over The Columbia River Gorge.

Traditionally, harvest time is when summer fruits and vegetables were preserved for the scarcity of winter. You can customize labels and miniature jars with your wedding date and more. Tie off the tiny jar with a bit of twine and viola, all done.

How sweet it is

Fall also brings us Halloween and its bounty of sweets. Pick classic favorites or candies with fall flavors, like the rich taste of pralines, caramels, cinnamon

favors

hard candies or any one of the legions of pumpkin flavored candies that come out in the fall. Bundle them up in adorable favor bags.

Season’s bounty

You can also pick a peck of lovely gifts with seasonal fruits like fall apples and pears. For a decadent favor, find a candy shop that makes custom candied apples. Wrap them and order up or make custom tags for a crisp and sweet fall treat. Don’t forget other traditional favorites like caramel corn, popcorn balls and kettle corn. Work with local vendors and farmers to pick the finest ingredients and give your ceremony a sense of place and

time that your guests won’t soon forget.

More ideas for edible favors:

• S ’mores fixings, bagged up and ready to use, especially if you will have a nighttime reception lit with fires or fireplaces. • Hot chocolate mix. • Miniature bottles of maple syrup or local honey. • C ookies, doughnuts, or miniature pies or cupcakes from a local vendor, customized in shapes and colors that complement your palette. The Gorge has several farmers markets with much to take in so give yourself the time needed and enjoy what local vendors can inspire.

Blooming One of the big ticket items for a wedding is the flowers. With flowers being such a large part of your big day, you need to make sure your selection is precise! With florists all over The Gorge, how do you know which one fits your needs? Here’s how to pick the best fall blooms that will complement your color palette and make your ceremony one to remember. Be prepared with a good list of questions for your florist: • What flowers will be in season? • What flowers are available that will fit my budget and color preferences? • Do you have pictures of other weddings you’ve done in my price range? • How will the flowers be handled, set up and delivered? • Do you preserve bouquets after the wedding? • Do you offer rental items like vases or will we need to get them from another company? Get in touch with your florist early, at least three months in advance, the society says. If you’re getting married

in a peak season for your venue, you may even need to allow up to a year. Bring any pictures you like and pictures of your dress and bridesmaids’ dresses so your florist can create a spectacular event that is also in your budget.

ideas

Fall accents

Add some seasonal accents to your bouquet no matter your color palette. Berries, oak and maple leaves, twigs, wheat and other grasses all make gorgeous additions. To stretch your budget, work with your florist to choose flowers in season. Some common flowers that bloom in fall are Asiatic and calla lilies, dahlias, chrysanthemums, roses and yarrow.

Think outside the bouquet

Send flowers that match your wedding theme as welcome gifts for out-of-town guests and wedding party members or as thank you gifts. You can also use flowers to decorate the wedding transportation, in floating arrangements, or as hair accessories.

BOUQUET CREATED BY BLOOMSBURY LOCATED IN STEVENSON, WASHINGTON.

Strike the perfect Tiny lights

Keep your photos in mind

Think metallic

Shiny surfaces, such as metal and mirrors, magnify any available light. Warm up your venue with gold or bronze accents. Place candles on mirrored charges or on shiny metallic candlesticks.

Get creative with your lighting. Use a variety of lanterns, either battery-powered or traditional oil or candle-powered to light up dark corners or line aisles or long tables (go battery powered if they’re anywhere they might get knocked over). You can also hang lanterns from long chains or ribbons to bring the eye up and cast a warm glow. Arrange traditional electric lamps where people will gather and talk, next to a grouping of comfy chairs or by couches. You can even have groupings of lamps on a theme, say all Tiffany-style lamps, for more visual impact.

9 #GWM

Walk through the venue with your photographer beforehand so he or she can see how it’s lit during different times of day and from different angles. Pick out locations for pictures and also talk about what, if any, lighting you will be adding to the space.

There are gorgeous options for adding tiny lights on metallic or nearly invisible strings. Bonus: Many are also battery operated. Think of wrapping strings around arches, trellises, around light fixtures, tent poles and frames, or tables.

Lanterns and lamps

FALL/WINTER 2018

Whether indoors or out, there are a variety of options for setting up your ceremony in the perfect light. In the Gorge always keep in mind that the weather is not always as you think. Sunshine with bright lights can turn to rain and overcast in a matter of minutes.

Keep the pumpkins out of the sunlight and in a cool place and drape the entire pumpkin in a damp towel to keep it fresh.

Get rich with your Getting married in The Gorge, regardless of the season, ensures your seasonal color palette will be abundant! Fall colors allow you to get rich with your palette. Jewel tones, autumnal hues, and deep greens complement the season perfectly. There are several ways to incorporate these colors into your wedding.

Jewel tones

These colors mimic the bright, vibrant colors of our favorite gemstones. Think ruby red, emerald green and the deep purple of amethyst. Wash your bridesmaids in these colors, which will contrast beautifully with your white or cream bridal gown. You could even go a step farther and make your own gown in these rich tones. Bridal shops can give

palette

you great options for finding just the right shades.

Creative ways to

add color

If you’re looking for more ways to add pops of your palette to the ceremony, here are some suggestions: • Ask your baker about dumping the traditional white cake for a stunning creation in your chosen colors. If you were dreaming of an all-white confection, look to a florist for a beautiful cake topper in just the right colors. • Make your ceremony Insta perfect by setting up backdrops for your guests to take pictures with. • Put your best foot forward with bright footwear.

Turn over a new leaf

When we think of fall, we think of the oranges, reds, yellows and rich browns of falling leaves. Work these colors into your celebration by using the leaves themselves in centerpieces and choosing flowers and candles in these colors. Want to make a stunning statement? Line up your bridesmaids in gowns of chocolate brown, especially for an evening ceremony.

Go green

Another color that works well with fall’s splendor are deep greens. Bouquets of lush greenery adorning your site and your bridesmaids are easy on the wallet and the eyes. Green can also be a great choice if your wedding will be outdoors, working well with the natural beauty that surrounds you.

Advice from a How did you fall into baking? Life change. By the time I hit my mid 30’s, I knew I needed to make a change in my life. I knew that I was the only one who could change it. When I was younger, I loved to bake. My husband and I were sitting around watching cupcake wars and I said, “What am I going to do with my life?”. He looked at me and said, “You should make some cupcakes.” We both laughed and well, now here we are. He didn’t realize what a monster he was creating! What are the pros and cons of both fondant and buttercream? I started with fondant but it’s not my passion. It’s terrible to eat and takes more time and money. Buttercream is delicious, beautiful and classic. You can’t go wrong with a beautiful buttercream cake. You eat with your eyes first and buttercream is more appealing and tasty. Can vegan and gluten free cakes taste as good as the real stuff ? Yes, vegan and gluten free cakes can be just as tasty. A little different texture but tasty.

FALL/WINTER 2018

Winter Your colors and decor will set the tone of your wedding. This is the time to fully embrace the season and glean inspiration from your surroundings.

Winter greens

Wreaths of pine and berries are perfect for adorning the bride and groom’s chairs, church doors or buffet tables. A sprig of pine and stick of cinnamon tied with twine around each guest’s napkin offers a striking table display and nod to the season. Look for unexpected ways to sneak in a little green to really make a statement.

Go cotton

Cotton is a great — and inexpensive — way to decorate a winter wedding. It makes an elegant wreath or centerpiece,

and can add wonderful texture to any bridal bouquet.

Seasonal Prints

Nothing is quite as cozy as flannel. While a colorful plaid is not a typical wedding choice, it packs a punch next to a white wedding gown or cranberry bridesmaid dress.

nod to the holidays, consider incorporating more traditional Christmas decorations. Instead of a traditional guest book, have guests sign clear glass bulb ornaments and have a tree set up for them to hang them on.

Bold stripes also are great for larger items, such as table runners, down to the details, like the print on ribbon around a bouquet.

Oftentimes churches decorate heavily for holiday services with white fabrics and cheery poinsettias. If you incorporate these elements, you might not have to decorate your ceremony space much at all — translating into big savings.

Luxe fabrics

Winter whiteout

To add some serious glamour to your winter affair, consider punching up your fabrics. A white velvet aisle runner, for example, will take your ceremony from chic to tres chic in an instant.

This might be the only season when going all out with all white is not only appropriate but stunning. Create your own winter wonderland by embracing the snow-like hue and pairing it with a deep color that will allow the white to truly shine, such as evergreen or cranberry.

Keeping everyone Hosting a wedding in the winter months offers up a lot of fun ways to embellish your nuptials — and keep your guests warm. Even if you aren’t hosting an outdoor affair, the chill has a way of sneaking inside like an unwanted guest. Chase the chill away and enjoy your cozy winter wedding.

For the ceremony

1. Have cozy blankets on hand for guests to wrap up. Think soft flannels and warm fleece in rich colors. Place them in baskets near the back of the aisle with a chalkboard sign reading, “ To have and to hold, in case you get cold.” 2. Offer hand warmers. This is a great addition to any outdoor ceremony, and your guests will thank you for it.

3. Prepare seat-side snacking. Offer roasted chestnuts to guests as they take their seats. They not only keep the munchies at bay but create classy hand warmers for guests who would rather “hold” than “have.” 4. Add some cushion — to your guest seating, that is. Sitting on a cushioned pad instead of a cold chair can make a world of difference, and your guests will appreciate you thinking of the small creature comforts. 5. Rent portable heaters. If you are set on having an outdoor ceremony, you might look into renting portable heaters. The tall, sleek variety can be elegantly arranged to line the outer-rim of the seating area, or could be incorporated fully into your decor by lining the aisle with colorful ribbons attached to each.

cozy

For the reception

1. Stoke open fireplaces (where possible). Is there a fireplace at your venue? Ask if lighting a fire is an option. Or if your venue allows, create a bonfire outside. There is nothing like the crackle of a fire to keep things toasty. 2. Let your guests enjoy a coffee or hot cocoa bar. Nothing makes people feel warm like a hot beverage. You can offer add-ons, such as shaved chocolate sprinkles, marshmallows, whipped cream, cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans. Don’t forget about other toasty drink options, such as mulled wine or cider. 3. Start the meal with something seasonal. Nothing beats a winter soup, soft cheese plate or roasted root vegetables.

4. Serve a warm dessert. While wedding cake is always a winner — and classic choice — consider adding something warm to your dessert menu. A fruit crisp or

warm bread pudding with a bourbon-butter glaze is sure to chase the chill away. 5. Gift warm wedding favors.

What is one piece of advice you share with all of your wedding couples? Be cautious of the wind here in the Columbia River Gorge when considering alter arrangements, table décor, ect. Choose hardier flowers in consideration of the weather. Do you suggest a separate tossing bouquet? We recommend a toss bouquet to be used for decoration, where the guests sign in; that way you get double usage out of the bouquet.

What are some tips you have for couples on a budget? Spend your money where it matters: the bridal bouquet, alter pieces and pieces that will be in your pictures.

The disaster

Disaster: A freak blizzard- Not unheard of in our area to go to bed with bare ground and wake to a beautiful Gorge winter wonderland!

Disaster: A flame gets out of hand How to Plan: Candles are beautiful, and fire pits are fun, but with lax supervision or an over-zealous wedding guest, they can easily get out of control. Plan to keep a small fire extinguisher within reach of every lit fireplace or fire pit, and in a location convenient to any candle flame gone rogue. Disaster: Your venue loses power How to plan: Winter storms have the potential to cause a power outage. Ask your venue if it has a backup generator before you book, and how

it handles power outages. If your venue is without a generator, plan on keeping plenty of extra candles on-hand — which will provide much-needed light and create a romantic vibe. Disaster: A massive cold or flu string How to plan: This is not an unlikely scenario. Winter is cold and flu season after all. Wash your hands regularly and drink plenty of water. It would surprise you how much these activities help ward off unwanted colds.

Consider insurance

Purchasing wedding insurance can be one of the best decisions you make for your wedding. Many policies protect couples from losing deposit money and help them acquire full refunds from vendors who cancel for a variety of reasons — including the weather.

How to Plan: You cannot control the weather, but you can control your response to it. The winter season normally brings its fair

share of rain that can lead to unsafe road conditions and flight delays for those coming to join you for your big day. Remind guests and vendors to pad their travel time as much as possible. Talk with your wedding planner about the quickest way to condense tables if several guests are unable to show.

FALL/WINTER 2018

Winter weddings are tinged with a special touch of magic that the other seasons just lack. Maybe it’s the nip of the cold, or perhaps winter nuptials play off of holiday excitement, but winter can be one of the most exciting times to get married. Winter weddings also come with their particular brand of perils. Especially with a winter wedding, things happen outside of the typical wedding disasters of lost vows/dresses/ rings, issues with vendors and sporadic breakout acne. Taking the time to plan ahead can ward off feelings of stress and anxiety, should any of these wedding disasters happen.

All about

FALL/WINTER 2018

Your wedding should not be just a day for you to remember. Traditionally, a wedding reception is a party thrown in honor of the bridal couple, but is hosted for the wedding guests as a thank you for their presence at the nuptials and for their gifts.

#GWM

26

With the right planning, your reception can be just as memorable for your guests as it is for you and your family. Do research and think about what you’ve enjoyed (and haven’t enjoyed) as a guest at weddings. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

Hire a Caricaturist

Caricaturists always add a playful dose of entertainment, and their popularity at weddings in recent years has grown significantly. Not only are they entertaining

entertainment to watch during your reception,

but they can offer your guests a unique, personalized item —

which you can use as a wedding

favor — to take home with them at the end of the evening.

Hire Instructors Sometimes enticing guests out on the dance floor can be a struggle. Offering up some entertainment on the dance floor could be just the ticket to get guests into the groove of things. Instructors can frequently be hired by the hour, so you can easily

limit

your

costs.

Your

guests will never forget that your wedding is where they learned (or relearned) how to swing, waltz or salsa.

Offer a Photo Booth

Photo booths are quickly becoming an icon at weddings. Although many photographers offer a photo booth as an addon option to most packages, a photo booth does not need to be professionally installed or wreck your budget. Consider crafting your own backdrop. Pick up fun props at a party store or thrift store, and use an iPad on a tripod to capture the mischief. If you’ve got young cousins itching to be involved, have one of them man the camera. You don’t need to spend a fortune. But whatever you choose, you need to enjoy it. If you are happy and having fun, your guests will, too.

Advice from a What do you enjoy most about shooting weddings in The Gorge? Shooting weddings in The Gorge are always a win-win for me. I LOVE outdoor weddings, elopements and adventure. I also love being surrounded by beautiful scenery. Being able to photograph in a stunning scenic environment year round, that by the very nature of the area attracts folks with more of an outdoor, adventurous spirit is pretty perfect. Bonus is that living outside the rain shadow allows for less of a rainy season and a longer outdoor season for photography. So yeah, win-win all around!

FALL/WINTER 2018

What can a couple expect at their first meeting with you? Sitting down (or chatting by phone / Face-time) and discussing what they are planning for their wedding, how they would like it captured and general time frames to see which of my packages best meets their needs

#GWM

28

Do you bring assistants with you or do you shoot by yourself ? I bring an assistant with me for a portion of the wedding and can increase their time there, depending on the package that best meets the couples needs. I can always add time for my second photographer if the couple would like to have them there longer or remove the second photographer to help reduce prices. I try to be as flexible as possible with wants, needs and budgets. Do you include engagement photos in your packages? My biggest package includes an engagement session. Outside of that, I do offer a reduced rate on sessions for couples that have booked a wedding with me. I think engagement sessions are a great way for us to get to know each other a bit.

What are your favorite types of fall and winter wedding shoots? Forests, orchards, backyards and barn weddings! Are there any photography trends you wish would go away and why? Personally, I am not a fan of making images black and white and leaving one object in color. I say decide and go all in....one direction or another. Although I do not edit images that way, ever, to each their own for what folks like! Can you give our readers three tips that you would find helpful, in general, for their wedding day? 1. With or without a wedding planner, make sure you have an understanding of the wedding day timeline. 2. Make sure you have some towels to dry off the stems of the bridal parties flowers before walking down the aisle. You don’t want wet spots on your dresses. 3. Delegate as much as you can so that you can relax, absorb and enjoy your wedding day. On the actual wedding day, make sure you have a point of contact, that you trust, to deal with any issues that come up so that you do not have to worry about it. It’s your day...enjoy it!

what was your favorite wedding moment ?

Dakota told me we were going for a drive and we took a cruise out into the woods. He pulled over to where we had a perfect view of the mountain (my favorite spot) and told me we were getting out to take a walk. We got out of the car, I started walking and I turned around and he had the ring stuck in his back pocket!! I started asking him what it was and what he was doing and he told me to turn back around!

The first look - We did separate photos before our reception and it was so special just having those moments with my husband and our photographer.

did you hire a wedding planner ?

My mother in law Stephanie Olson was graciously our wedding planner for everything! She was so wonderful! can you give any planning advice to future brides ?

Making a set schedule of things to be done in a timely manner definitely helped me accomplish my dream wedding. what do you wish you would have done differently ?

Nothing. I just wish there were more hours in the day to enjoy our wedding.

do you have a diy or wedding hack to share ?

Homemade candles were my favorite to make as party favors, the extras you can take home and re-live your special day over and over again!

wedding ?

Just remembering that it’s your day. Some things don’t go as planned but, you are marrying your best friend and everyone who’s there is there to celebrate you! You only get that one day so enjoy every second of it! why did you choose to be married in the gorge ?

We chose The Gorge because we both grew up here. It’s home to us. We got to get married in the woods which was where we spent a lot of our time driving around when we were dating and where he proposed to me!

Holiday

I do’s

Choosing your wedding date is at the very top of the wedding to-do list. The date of your wedding helps make decisions about other wedding-related choices that have to be made — including venue, dress and decor. What could be more festive than a holiday wedding? Create a festive ceremony that no one could ever forget (along with your anniversary date). Are you considering unwrapping a Christmas wedding? Here are some suggestions that can help kick off your planning.

Color scheme

These are as numerous as the options for your trees, but the classic option is red and green. Also look to gold and silver or bright jewel tones for a nontraditional look. If you’ve got a striking backdrop for the ceremony, like a gloriously decorated church or other venue, opt for all white.

Favors made easy

Hit up the Christmas aisle for easy ideas for favors. Try these on for size: • Customized ornaments with your name and date, made from clear, fillable ornaments. • Tiny tree seedlings wrapped in burlap and tied with a bow. Make sure to include planting instructions. • Stockings stuffed with care with local Christmas cookies for your guests.

Creative flower ideas

Use seasonal favorites in your floral arrangements. Try studding your blooms with snips of fir or other holiday greenery, frosted miniature pine cones, holly or elegant berries. Talk to your florist about your options for weaving in some holiday cheer.

Glitz it up

Weddings are already glamorous affairs, but the holidays offer a new reason to get a little glam. Look to sparkly gowns and glittering accessories to add a spark to a cold winter’s night. Best news? Your bridal party will almost definitely find a reason to reuse dresses and accessories as the season rolls on.

Add a spark

Nothing’s more beautiful than a candlelight Christmas service and you can certainly incorporate this into your ceremony. Having the bridal party process in with candles aglow, line the altar, and arrange candles of all sizes on tables around the venue for a warm, romantic glow.

Winter weddings are not the time to skimp on food. Give your guests a warm bellyful of good eats. To give your ceremony a sense of place, choose regional favorites. Preferably warm ones.

Add a bit of snow to your wedding cake with sprinkles of sparkling sugar and sprays of wintertime berries. Talk to your baker about adding some seasonal touches.
