We honor and acknowledge the traditional owners of this land we stand on. We recognize the Native American peoples continuing connection to land, place, waters, and community. We pay our respects to their cultures, and those who have lived here past & present in time of immemorial.

The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce acknowledges that the sacred land that we live and learn on today belongs to the Tenino people, the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and the Wasco-Wishram, which is now part of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs in Oregon, and the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation in Washington.

Eighty-four miles from the bustling city of Portland, the forest turns to dry grasslands, and The Dalles emerges, the eastern gateway to the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area and center of commerce for over 10,000 years. The Dalles rests in the rain shadow of Mt. Hood, which means that we enjoy 300 days of sun every year, and experience nearly half as much rain as many of our neighbors. This dry and sunny climate nurtures our worldrenowned sweet cherries, dozens of grape varieties used to make award-winning wines, as well as hundreds of acres of dryland wheat. One of the best cycling rides in The Dalles cuts through our gorgeous rolling orchards and fields. There is more to do both outside and inside from hiking, bird watching, disc golf, museum touring, wine tasting, and water sports, you will never run out of things to do in The Dalles! We hope you’ll return to explore The Dalles again and again!

Celilo Falls was located on the Columbia River, approximately 13 miles east of The Dalles. On March 10th, 1957, Celilo Falls, which had served as a gathering place and major trading center for the Wasco, Paiute, and Warm Springs tribes for thousands of years, were inundated as the newly completed The Dalles Lock & Dam went into operation, creating a backwater that stretched twenty-four miles and submerged tribal fishing and grazing grounds as

introduction

Located in the rain shadow of majestic Mt. Hood, The Dalles is a sunny destination offering an abundance of outdoor recreation: cycling, fishing, hiking, rafting, camping, boating, rock climbing, and much more. Positioned as the eastern gateway of the worldrenowned Columbia River Gorge, the city is surrounded by forests, orchards and vineyards, miles of wheat land, high desert, and, of course, the mighty Columbia River. It is an area rich in history and resources. Less than an hour away, Mt. Hood (11,250 feet) provides a paradise for skiers, hikers, mountain climbers, and those who just want to experience its grandeur. Mt. Adams, the Klickitat Mountains, and the Columbia River itself also provide stunning vistas. In about 45 minutes you can find yourself whitewater rafting on the Deschutes River or salmon fishing at the mouth of any of the tributaries that spill into the Columbia.

Floods, the largest floods to ever occur, swept through the area about 16,000 to 14,000 years ago when an Ice Dam, holding back hundreds of miles of lake water in Canada began to fail. Over the course of three days, nearly 600 cubic miles of water drained from the lake created by the ice dam. For 2,500 years, hundreds of floods of this caliber shaped the Gorge.

Our community is built upon the legacy of historic Native American Tribes who turned the area into the center of commerce for the Columbia River Gorge nearly 11,000 years ago. Indigenous Peoples first settled in the vicinity in 9000 B.C. The Wascos, Wakemaps, Winquatt, and Tenno tribes assembled for trade in The Dalles/Win-quatt (The Indian name in use for the area was Win-quatt), signifying a place encircled by rock cliffs,) long before pioneers came to the west. The Dalles served twice as a campsite for the Lewis & Clark expedition, once in October 1805 and again in April 1806, before developing into a key regional center for the fur trade, supporting a Hudson’s Bay Company outpost in 1829. Wasco County Wasco County is named for the Wascopam Tribe of Indians that lived on the south shore of the Columbia River, near The Dalles, Oregon. Created on January 11th, 1854, Wasco County was the largest county in the history of the United States, covering 130,000 square miles. Although eventually seventeen other counties were created out of Wasco County. Today, Wasco County has been reduced to 2,408 square miles.

The Historic Columbia River Highway is an approximately 75-mile-long (121 km) scenic highway in the U.S. state of Oregon between Troutdale and The Dalles, built through the Columbia River Gorge between 1913 and 1922. As the first planned scenic roadway in the United States, it has been recognized in numerous ways, including a listing on the

National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark designation as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers, and considered a “destination unto itself” as an All-American Road by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation.

When the United States highway system was officially established in 1926, the highway became the part of U.S. Route 30. Since then, the modern Interstate 84 has been built parallel to the highway between Portland and The Dalles, replacing it as the main travel route and resulting in the loss of some of the original sections of road.

To date, 68 of the original 73 miles of highway have been restored. With the completion of the last 5 miles, visitors will be able to travel from The Dalles to Troutdale in stunning fashion taking beautiful vistas, cascading waterfalls, majestic rock formations and stunning basalt tunnels along the way.

The Oregon Trail (1841 – 1866)

For twenty-five years, half a million people pulled up stakes and headed for the farms and gold fields of the West. Oregon was the destination for about a third of the emigrants. This was the last of the Great Migrations. For three years, The Dalles was the end of the Oregon Trail as an overland route. The Dalles became a critical stop for pioneers following the Oregon Trail. Those who wished to continue heading west of The Dalles had little choice but to make a raft of pine logs. Many lives were lost to the Columbia River rapids. Eventually an alternate route was built giving pioneers a choice between the

and immigrants soon followed, with important centers of influence developing at Fort Vancouver and Fort Dalles. (Today visitors can still experience some of this history by visiting The Fort Dalles Museum, The Rock Fort, and Historical Murals located in The Dalles.) Explorers, botanists, artists, writers, and adventurers all came to the “grand dalles of the Columbia.”

The Dalles was incorporated in 1857, making it one of the oldest incorporated cities in Oregon. The military first referred to the location as Fort Drum, then Wascopum and eventually changing the name to Fort Dalles. The first use of the name Dalles for the town was in 1814. The town became known as City of The Dalles in 1860 and was officially adopted by city ordinance to conform with popular usage.

Built as a drinking establishment in 1876, the Baldwin Saloon has an old-time feel and plenty of character. Its brick walls, wooden booths, high ceiling, antique bar and the collection of late-19th – century landscape paintings and large bar nudes make you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time. But today’s Baldwin Saloon is a gathering place that offers great food (everything from burgers to bouillabaisse), local wines and other spirits, and lively atmosphere.

Formerly the home of the Sunshine Biscuit Company, the Sunshine Mill towers over the east end of The Dalles at the new roundabout. Today it houses a tasting room and an innovative by-the-glass bottling facility for Copa di Vino that offers daily tastings, weekly entertainment, and a unique gathering place. As development continues, the Historic Sunshine Mill will be home to gourmet artisans, vintners, and a unique boutique hotel built inside former grain silos.

Fishing Guide

Fishingavailable)from the bank: Any public access point along the river. Fly fishing

The Columbia River is the Pacific Northwest’s best walleye fishery, and one of the best fishing spots is The Dalles Pool, which stretches from The Dalles Dam upstream to the John Day Dam. Walleye season is year-round, but most anglers get serious about in March, with pre-spawn fishing best through April. Popular spots for Salmon and Steelhead include the mouths of cooler tributaries feeding both pools. Sturgeon fishing can be good, with limited retention fisheries in both pools. Keep your eyes open for the multiple bass tournaments that take place along the Columbia throughout the year.

2022-2023 Business Directory & Visitor’s Guide 49

Our goal is to help businesses succeed. We do this by focusing on our key objectives: strengthening the local economy; providing business relationship building and marketing opportunities; representing business interests to the government; taking political action and promoting the community. Everything we do reinforces at least one of these five strategies – from community marketing to business-to-business relationship building to providing testimony on local issues to our active referral system. We are always working to fulfill the Chamber’s mission— “To provide value to our members through advocacy and leadership, promoting a positive environment for business, community, and education.” Together with our partners and our members, we are working toward a vibrant community where people come to live, work, play, and do business because The Dalles really is a “sunsational” place to live!
