INTRODUCTION
WELCOME TO THE DALLES, OREGON
CHERRY CAPITAL of the world N
2
estled along the banks of the mighty Columbia River, just 84 miles east of Portland, The Dalles, Oregon, offers a multitude of opportunities to visitors. Considered the Eastern Gateway to the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, The Dalles is located in the rain shadow of Mt. Hood. This unique geography has a significant impact on our climate. Thanks to the rain shadow effect, The Dalles enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year. Our climate has everyone casting off their rain gear and embracing all the recreational possibilities under the sun! The dry and sunny climate also nurtures our worldrenowned sweet cherry crop – making The Dalles the sweet cherry capital of the world – and grape varieties used to produce award-winning wines. This makes wine tasting and farm stand visiting a must while you’re in The Dalles. Our community has a rich history. As a historic Native American trading area, The Dalles has been a center of commerce for thousands of years making it one of the oldest communities in North America. It was even considered the end of the Oregon Trail by pioneers who loaded their wagons onto rafts or barges and floated down the Columbia to the mouth of the Willamette River, then upriver to Oregon City. Their legacies are preserved here in the form of petroglyphs, museums, murals, and in the spirit of the people who continue to care for this land and our town. To learn more visit one of our many cultural and historic attractions! Remember that The Dalles is just 75 minutes from Portland with 300 days of sun a year and fantastic recreational and cultural opportunities, The Dalles is a wonderland for cyclists, hikers, river rafters, wildflower fanatics, anglers, art lovers, history buffs and wine aficionados. We hope you’ll return to explore The Dalles area with us again and again! THE DALLES AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

L
ocated in the rain shadow of majestic Mt. Hood, The Dalles is a sunny destination offering an abundance of outdoor recreation: cycling, fishing, hiking, rafting, camping, boating, rock climbing, and much more. Positioned as the eastern gateway of the world-renowned Columbia River Gorge, the city is surrounded by forests, orchards and vineyards, miles of wheat land, high desert, and, of course, the mighty Columbia River. It is an area rich in history and resources. Less than an hour away, Mt. Hood (11,250 feet) provides a paradise for skiers, hikers, mountain climbers, and those who want to experience its grandeur. Mt. Adams, the Klickitat Mountains, and the Columbia River itself also provide stunning vistas. In about 45 minutes you can find yourself whitewater rafting on the Deschutes River or salmon fishing at the mouth of any of the tributaries that spill into the Columbia. GEOLOGY From the Eocene to Miocene period 40-12 million years ago thousands of volcanic eruptions, mudflows, and basalt floods occurred all over Oregon, including here in the Gorge. Today you can still see the layers of lava and ash along the cliffs of the Gorge. During the Pleistocene (2 million to 700,000 years ago) the Cascade Mountain Range began to grow taller than ever before causing the Columbia River to cut a deep near sea-level gorge through the landscape.
4
The Missoula Floods, the largest floods to ever occur, swept through the area about 16,000 to 14,000 years ago when an Ice Dam, holding back hundreds of miles of lake water in Canada began to fail. For three days, nearly 600 cubic miles of water
drained from the lake created by the ice dam. For 2,500 years hundreds of floods of this caliber shaped the Gorge. INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES Our community was built upon the legacy of historic Native American Tribes who turned the area into the center of commerce for The Columbia River Gorge nearly 11,000 years ago. Indigenous Peoples first settled in the vicinity in 9000 B.C. The Wascos, Wakemaps, Winquatt, and Tenino tribes assembled for trade in The Dalles/Win-quatt (The Indian name in use for the area was Win-quatt), signifying a place encircled by rock cliffs.) long before pioneers came to the west. They traded with tribes that lived as far away as British Columbia, California, and Idaho. When European Settlers began
colonizing the west, the native populations were decimated by disease. However, the Wascos maintained peace with traders, boatman, and settlers. Despite this, Native Americans were forcibly relocated by the U.S. Military to the Warm Springs Reservation in 1855. Causing great unrest amongst Indigenous Communities as they fought for their homeland. Fort Dalles became a central military headquarters for dispatching troops to combat this unrest. CELILO FALLS Celilo Falls was located on the Columbia River, approximately 13 miles east of The Dalles. On March 10th, 1957 Celilo Falls, which had served as a gathering place and major trading center for the Wasco, Paiute, and Warm Springs Tribes for thousands of years, were inundated as THE DALLES AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

the newly completed The Dalles Lock & Dam went into operation, creating a backwater that stretched twenty-four miles and submerged tribal fishing and grazing grounds as well as culturally significant places and pictographs and petroglyphs. The completion of The Dalles Lock & Dam facilitated faster river traffic and provided hydroelectric power for the region. COLUMBIA BASIN TRIBES TODAY Today The Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission continues its mission to put fish back in the rivers and protect watersheds where fish live, protect tribal treaty fishing rights, share salmon culture, and provide fisher services. There are also still a few places where you can view some of the surviving historical and culturally significant artifacts. Columbia BUSINESS DIRECTORY AND VISITOR’S GUIDE 2019
Hills State Park, 15 minutes from downtown The Dalles offers tours of some surviving petroglyphs and pictographs. Including the famous, and ever watchful Tsagaglalal, or “She Who Watches.” And Maryhill Museum of Art which has an exhibit featuring ancient petroglyphs, intricate baskets and beadwork and a vast array of artifacts from Pacific Northwest and North American tribes.
explorers, other military expeditions and immigrants soon followed, with important centers of influence developing at Fort Vancouver and Fort Dalles. (Today visitors can still experience some of this history by visiting The Fort Dalles Museum, The Rock Fort, and Historical Murals located in The Dalles.) Explorers, botanists, artists, writers, and adventurers all came to the “grand dalles of the Columbia.”
LEWIS AND CLARK The Dalles served twice as a campsite for the Lewis & Clark expedition –once in October 1805 and again in April 1806 – before developing into a critical regional center for the fur trade, supporting a Hudson’s Bay Company outpost in 1829. Fur traders came through in the 1810s and 1820s. Trappers,
The Hudson’s Bay boatmen and the French-Canadian fur traders called the most magnificent rapids on the Columbia River “Le Grand Dalles de la Columbia.” These rapids became known as the “Long Narrows,” and their companion, “les petites dalles” as the “Short Narrows.” The Dalles was incorporated in 1857, making it

one of the oldest incorporated cities in Oregon. The military first referred to the location as Fort Drum, then Wascopum and eventually changing the name to Fort Dalles. The first use of the name Dalles for the town was in 1814. The city became known as City of The Dalles in 1860 and was officially adopted by city ordinance to conform with widespread usage. THE OREGON TRAIL (1841 – 1866) For twenty-five years, half a million people pulled up stakes and headed for the farms and gold fields of the West. Oregon was the destination for about a third of the emigrants. This was the last of the Great Migrations. For three years The Dalles was the end of the Oregon Trail as an overland route. The Dalles became a critical stop for pioneers following the Oregon Trail. Those who wished to continue heading west of The Dalles had little choice but to make a raft of pine logs. Many lives were lost to the Columbia River rapids. Eventually, an alternate route was built giving pioneers a choice between the water route of the rugged Barlow Road route around Mt. Hood. WASCO COUNTY Wasco County was named for the Wascopam Tribe of Indians that lived on the south shore of the Columbia River, near The Dalles, Oregon. Created on January 11th, 1854 Wasco County was the largest county in the history of the United States, covering 130,000 square miles.
Although eventually seventeen other counties were created out of Wasco County. Today Wasco County has been reduced to 2,408 square miles. THE HISTORIC COLUMBIA RIVER HIGHWAY The Historic Columbia River Highway is an approximately 75-mile-long (121 km) scenic highway in the U.S. state of Oregon between Troutdale and The Dalles, built through the Columbia River Gorge between 1913 and 1922. As the first planned scenic roadway in the United States, it has been recognized in numerous ways, including a listing on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark; designation as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers, and considered a “destination unto itself” as an All-American Road by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. When the United States highway system was officially established in 1926, the Columbia River Highway became the part of U.S. Route 30. Since then, modern Interstate 84 has been built parallel to the highway between Portland and The Dalles, replacing it as the main travel route and resulting in the loss of some of the original sections of road. THE DALLES HISTORIC COMMERCIAL DISTRICT The downtown The Dalles Commercial Historic District was listed in the National Register
of Historic Places in 1986. In 1997 an update of the District was funded, and the project re-evaluated the classifications of the resources. The period of significance was also adjusted to include the resources built during the late 1930s and 1945. TODAY The Dalles remains an important center for commerce, agriculture, and recreation in The Columbia River Gorge! As well as an essential historical and cultural sight. With approximately 263,000 acres of wheat, cherry, apple, and pear orchards and vineyards, 300 days of sunshine a year, eight nearby rivers for recreation, miles of bike trails, 129 commercial cruise ship dockings, and a growing population there are boundless opportunities in this fantastic community. VISIT OUR LOCAL LIBRARY The Dalles-Wasco County Public Library serves the residents of Wasco County as well as the residents of surrounding areas who pay an annual fee or are included in reciprocal borrowing agreements. The Wasco County Library Service District provides the library’s operating funds through an intergovernmental agreement with the City of The Dalles. The library is a member of Sage, an automated library system shared by sixty-seven libraries in a twelve county area. HOURS OF OPERATION

CATHERINE CREEK - 1.5 miles, roundtrip. Beautiful views, amazing wildflowers, oak woodlands, open grasslands—this short hike is the perfect way to sample the best of the Catherine Creek area. More than 90 varieties of wildflowers bloom here, making this a favorite springtime destination. RIVERFRONT TRAIL – 10 miles, one way. The Riverfront Trail in The Dalles is a beautiful ADA accessible paved trail that traces the south bank of the Columbia River at the historic “bend in the river,” where the Columbia takes a dramatic 90-degree turn from its east-west flow to a northsouth direction. This non-motorized recreational facility benefits bicyclists, pedestrians, joggers, pet walkers, and people with disabilities. ROWENA PLATEAU – 1 mile, out and back. Indulge in this relaxing hike in the eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge. A broad trail slopes gently downhill through the entire hike. This is a floral paradise in early-late spring, with Lupine and Balsamroot in the starring roles. See Rowena Pond, and get a glimpse of a second well-hidden pond, where you might even glimpse some deer and frogs! HORSETHIEF BUTTE – 1.5 miles, roundtrip. Horsethief Butte is a fun destination for hikers and rock climbers alike. Visit March-June for a chance to see gorgeous floral displays or visit year-round to watch rock climbers and soak up vistas of sunny grassland, and the castle-like rock structure that makes up the butte.

Horsethief Butte is located within Columbia Hills State Park. With 12.4 miles of trails including The Dalles Mountain Ranch Loop, Crawford Oaks Trail, Stacker Butte (challenging), and Horsethief Butte (easy), Columbia Hills State Park is a local favorite. Want to combine learning with recreation? Call to make a reservation to take a guided hiking tour of world-famous pictographs and petroglyphs including Tsagaglalal, (She Who Watches). DESCHUTES RIVER STATE PARK TRAIL – 4 miles, round trip. The Deschutes River Trail is a favorite haunt for hikers, gravel bike riders, fisherman, and river floaters on hot days. Enjoy the shade of the alder trees and cool off in this beautiful tributary of The Columbia River. Three trails stem from the Trailhead, The Blackberry Trail which is a 4-mile loop, Riverview Trail also a 4-mile loop and the Old Railbed Trail (16 miles one way) which is open to bikers and equestrians on horseback. In addition, the Ferry Springs Trail which can be accessed from the Old Railbed Trail adds a nice additional 2 miles to your trek and loops back to the Old Railbed Trail and the Blackberry Trail. WHITE RIVER FALLS STATE PARK – 1.5 miles, round trip. Witness a beautiful 90-ft waterfall, and if you dare, take the rugged .75-mile trek into the canyon it plummets towards. Witness the abandoned hydroelectric power plant at the base of the falls, which once supplied electricity to Wasco and Sherman Counties until the completion of The Dalles Dam in 1960. Once at the bottom a trail continues along the canyon for a way until the terrain becomes too difficult to navigate without specialized gear.

LOWER DESCHUTES RIVER Fish: Trout, Steelhead, Salmon The lower Deschutes – which enters the Columbia River
just east of The Dalles – is famous for both its trout and its fly fishing. Don’t miss the “Salmon Fly” hatch in May and June. Chinook salmon fishing can be quite good on the Deschutes, but spring seasons are allowed only under special regulations when run forecasts are promising. THE DALLES POOL, COLUMBIA RIVER Fish: Salmon, Walleye, Steelhead, Sturgeon, Small Mouth Bass The Columbia River is the Pacific Northwest’s best walleye fishery, and one of the best fishing spots is The Dalles Pool, which stretches from The Dalles Dam upstream to the John Day Dam. Walleye season is year-round, but most anglers get serious about in March, with pre-spawn fishing
best through April. Favorite spots for Salmon and Steelhead include the mouths of cooler tributaries feeding both pools. Sturgeon fishing can be good, with limited retention fisheries in both pools. Keep your eyes open for the multiple bass tournaments that take place along the Columbia throughout the year. MOVING INTO THE FUTURE
T
he Dalles has a long, hard-working history, stretching from the Native American tribes and Canadian fur trappers who traded here, to the advent of agriculture, to our modern-day industry. People in The Dalles are familiar with hard work, most have spent their summers working in cherry orchards, in wheat fields, in the forest, and the rivers. Take a short drive out to Sandoz Farm Stand which has been in operation since 1880 or take a walk through The Dalles Farmers Market, and you’ll see the proof of our town’s roots and hard-work everywhere. Their hard-work has paid off, too. The tourism industry in this town is on the rise to the benefit of locals and visitors alike. The Dalles has grown a lot over the past ten years, and it is expected to keep growing. Within the next five years, it is projected to have a bigger economy than many of our neighboring towns. Progress is being made everyday by hardworking visionaries and volunteers who work every day to improve our town. New murals and public art installations have gone up thanks to efforts made by Travel Oregon, The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce, The Dalles Mural Society, and Oregon Cultural Trust. A new dock designed to accommodate cruise ships, and an Explore The Dalles Blue Bus which travels the Gorge and allows people to hop on and off for FREE has invited people from all over the world to explore The Dalles. Car-free travel is on the rise in The Dalles, and that is something we should all continue to encourage. It helps to minimize the negative impact on traffic and locals while still allowing us to share our town and land with those who want to see it.
34
The Dalles is changing, but its identity is still intact. We are still people from a long, hard-working history, full of abundance, with a love of the land, and hope for the future. Sunsational The Dalles is what authenticity is made of.

FORT DALLES MUSEUM & ANDERSON HOMESTEAD Fort Dalles Museum is housed in the Surgeon’s Quarters, the only remaining officer’s house of the 1856 Fort Dalles military complex. Located just off 15th Street, the museum is Oregon’s
oldest history museum – first opened in 1905. Just to the east of the Fort is the Rorick House…the oldest house in The Dalles. Anderson Homestead, part of the museum, was built of handhewn logs in 1895 on Pleasant Ridge and moved to its present site in 1971. MARYHILL MUSEUM OF ART Just a few minutes east on Highway 14 in Washington, Maryhill Museum sits high on a cliff overlooking the Columbia River. Built by Sam Hill, who was often referred to as the King of Castle Nowhere, the museum is home to an extensive Native American collection, the largest collection of works by Auguste Rodin in the U.S., the Theatre de la Mode and much more. The new 25,500 square foot expansion that opened in 2012 adds outdoor interpretive space and a view that is to die for. Venture a mile east of the museum and you find the Stonehenge replica—a
memorial to World War I veterans. A little farther east and you can enjoy the Maryhill Loops Road—a ride you’ll not soon forget. OLD ST. PETER’S LANDMARK Built in 1897, St. Peter’s is a gothic, red brick church that was saved from demolition in 1971. It is owned and managed by a nonprofit, non-denominational organization. ur goal is to help businesses succeed. We do this by focusing on our key objectives: strengthening the local economy; providing networking and marketing opportunities; representing business interests to the government; taking political action; and promoting the community. Everything we do reinforces at least one of these five strategies -- from community marketing to the monthly Coffee Connections networking event to providing testimony on local issues to our active referral system. We are always working to fulfill the Chamber mission-- “To provide value to our members through advocacy and leadership, promoting a positive environment for business, community, and education.” Together with our partners and our members, we are working toward a vibrant community where people come to live, work, play and do business because The Dalles is a “sensational” place to live!
