Hello Everyone, It’s the New Year and that means one thing… Awards season! Throughout January and February we will have the Golden Globes, the BAFTA’s and the Oscars. It’s a great time for film lovers as the years best films all get released and this year is no different. As always, we’ll be playing all the major films in contention for awards. Starting with THE DANISH GIRL from director Tom Hooper (THE KINGS SPEECH, LES MISERABLES). Rumours are abound that this could finally be Leonardo Di Caprio’s year with THE REVENANT. There’s some light hearted relief in the form of Tina Fey & Amy Poehler’s comedy SISTERS. Sylvester Stallone is tipped for the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in CREED, some forty years after he won his first Oscar for the original Rocky. SPOTLIGHT and THE BIG SHORT both have amazing ensemble casts. Speaking of great casts, don’t forget DAD’S ARMY on Feb 5 - a full roster of British talent! There’s also some hugely acclaimed indie films vying for awards attention with ROOM, a tale of one mother and son trapped in a room making their escape into the real world. YOUTH starring Michael Caine & Harvey Keitel.
My name is James Tully and I’m the Film Officer for the Connaught Cinema. I’ve worked in cinemas for 16 years and bring my knowledge of the UK film business to the Connaught. We are partnered with Picturehouse so offer the best in alternative & world cinema alongside the blockbusters we all love!
Alongside our usual season of Saturday Morning Pictures for kids we have the family film GOOSEBUMPS for the February half term. My Pick
Room is absolutely amazing and demands to be seen! If you’re after a crowd pleaser then try CREED. I am the most excited to see THE REVENANT. It looks fantastic. James Tully Film Officer
Look out for this symbol on the films we think will be up for awards in the New year.

Who made it? Ron Howard Who’s in it? Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson Anything else? USA/UK 2015. 122 mins What’s it about? In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Why Should I see it? Ron Howard is a great director and the Moby Dick story has not been told on film since John Huston and Gregory Peck in 1958. Dramatic, exciting and harrowing the film reveals the true story behind the myth. Chris Hemsworth really comes into his own as an actor.

Josie Rourke’s revival now marks the play’s thirty year anniversary.
Regarded as one of Verdi’s finest operas, and Richard Eyre’s traditional staging, is one of The Royal Opera’s most popular productions. The opera tells the story of the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry, one of opera’s greatest heroines, based on the real life courtesan Marie Duplessis, who died in 1847 aged just 23. In this revival, Violetta is sung by Russian soprano Venera Gimadieva in her debut with The Royal Opera, following her successful appearance as Violetta at the Glyndebourne Festival.
