HI film lovers, It’s that time of year again. We are looking forward to the awards season as well as looking back as the film year has come to a close. Have a look at page 29 to see our top films of the year. 2016 was a great year for film and 2017 looks set to be another winner. The Awards season brings us new films from Martin Scorsese and Damien Chezelle. SILENCE stars Liam Neeson, Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield and is rumoured to be among Scorsese’s finest films. Damien Chezelle returns to the music genre after the Oscar winning WHIPLASH with his new film LA LA LAND. An Acclaimed musical set in Los Angeles. Liam Neeson also stars in A MONSTER CALLS, a great film from director J.A. Bayona (THE IMPOSSIBLE). More Awards hopefuls include MANCHESTER BY THE SEA starring Casey Affleck as a shoo in for Best Actor. Andrew Garfield is back in Mel Gibson’s HACKSAW RIDGE. Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel give amazing performances in LION, and there’s more terrific acting in DENIAL from Rachel Weisz, Tom Wilkinson and Timothy Spall. For families we have BALLERINA, the new film from the creators of MINIONS - SING and then for half term we have THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE. Our Saturday Morning Pictures shows offer a great way to catch up with the best family films at rock bottom prices. We even have a free screening of BABE.

My name is James Tully and I’m the Film Officer for the Connaught Cinema. I’ve worked in cinemas for 16 years and bring my knowledge of the UK film business to the Connaught. We are partnered with Picturehouse so offer the best in alternative & world cinema alongside the blockbusters we all love!

Last but not least we have more potential Awards winners with the Denzel Washington directed FENCES and the heartwarming true story of the women behind NASA’s first rocket launches HIDDEN FIGURES. My Pick

Look out for this symbol

So much to choose from during Oscar Season. A Martin for films we think will be nominated for awards. Scorsese film is always an event and I can’t wait. I’m also intrigued by the universal critical acclaim for MANCHESTER BY THE SEA.

What’s it about? Set before the events of the original Star Wars (1977s A NEW HOPE), this new story covers the mission to steal the plans to the Death Star. Jyn Erso is a rebellion soldier who is broken out of prison to lead a band of mercenaries to fight the Empire.

What’s it about? Set in 1879 Paris. An orphan girl dreams of becoming a ballerina and flees her rural Brittany for Paris, where she passes for someone else and accedes to the position of pupil at the Grand Opera house.

Why Should I see it? The first in Disney’s Star Wars spin off films, the trailer looks fantastic and really nails the style and tone of the first film. Gareth Edwards has proven capable of a big budget film after GODZILLA.

Why Should I see it? A charming antidote to the more boisterous style of animation, this lovely story has great messages for children and boasts beautiful animation.

What’s it about? A young boy is dealing with the illness of his mother when he seeks the help of a tree monster to deal with his problems. This is a very touching story about a boy who feels very damaged, guilty and mostly angry. He struggles at school with bullies, and pitied looks from everyone, and at bridge to terabithia home with his mother’s sickness. Why Should I see it? A visually stunning drama about how we cope with loss and our problems with the world. A brilliant breakout performance by Lewis MacDougal alongside the more seasoned performers.
