HI FILM LOVERS, Summer season has really started now… huge box office hits are on the way with WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES and the new film from Christopher Nolan DUNKIRK. As it’s the school summer holidays we have loads of new films for families including CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS, CARS 3, THE EMOJI MOVIE and THE NUT JOB 2. Advance word on ATOMIC BLONDE is that it has some of the best action scenes in decades, Charlize Theron plays a MI5 spy sent to Berlin. For those who prefer independent movies we have Morrissey biopic ENGLAND IS MINE as well as Shirley MacLaine in THE LAST WORD and Sam Neill in TOMMY’S HONOUR. I am also excited to see the return of Steven Soderbergh with LOGAN LUCKY, a heist movie set at a race track – reminds me of THE KILLING! There’s teen romance with EVERYTHING EVERYTHING and we are delighted to continue our 1987 series with screenings of THE PRINCESS BRIDE and THE LOST BOYS. MY PICK

As a proper Nolan fanboy, my pick is definitely DUNKIRK. But I’m also super-keen to see TERMINATOR 2 on the big screen again!

My name is James Tully and I’m the Film Officer for the Connaught Cinema. I’ve worked in cinemas for 16 years and bring my knowledge of the UK film business to the Connaught. We are partnered with Picturehouse so offer the best in alternative & world cinema alongside the blockbusters we all love!

WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Berlin, 1940. Working class couple Otto and Anna Quangel receive the news that their only son has lost his life in the battlefield and decide to resist the Nazi regime in their very own way. But it’s not long until the Gestapo is hunting them down as a threat. TESTAMENT OF YOUTH WHY SHOULD I SEE IT? An incredibly tense film with great lead performances from Gleeson and Thompson. It feels like a long time since we’ve seen Emma Thompson tackle a role as meaty as this on the big screen and we are delighted to have her back. CHURCHILL

SAVING PRIVATE RYAN

WHAT’S IT ABOUT? A dramatic evacuation of Allied soldiers, who were cut off and surrounded by the German army at the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, during World War II. Aided by the Air Force, the Home Guard and the Navy - it is a story of bravery, heroism and sacrifice.

HACKSAW RIDGE

WHY SHOULD I SEE IT? We absolutely love the films of Christopher Nolan, so him taking on an old fashioned war film is very exciting. Nolan has amassed some of the best acting talent around to flesh out all the character roles. Even though we know the story we suspect that there will be surprises in store with this one.
