Q&A WITH ERIC CLAPTON & DIRECTOR LILI FINI ZANUCK BROADCAST LIVE TO CINEMAS FROM THE BFI SOUTHBANK JANUARY 10, 7PM
HI FILM FANS, This film brochure sees us into Oscar season, with some absolutely amazing films on the horizon. Curiosity abounds over ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD, the circumstances around the reshoots have really put the film on a tight deadline. Christopher Plummer has already been Golden Globe nominated for his role in the action thriller. THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is an outstanding drama with some awards worthy performances. The new film from Steven Spielberg THE POST stars American acting royalty Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep and covers the Washington Post uncovering a war conspiracy. Gary Oldman will chew his way through awards season with his performance as Winston Churchill in DARKEST HOUR. Alexander Payne’s new
comedy drama DOWNSIZING sees Matt Damon shrunk to 4 inches tall in the near future. For families there’s two movies from great animation studios, COCO from the geniuses at Pixar and EARLY MAN from Wallace and Gromit creators Aardman. As well as a great line-up for our weekly Saturday Morning Pictures. Into February there’s more great drama with Colin Firth in THE MERCY, Daniel Day Lewis in PHANTOM THREAD and the new film from Clint Eastwood 15:17 TO PARIS.
MY PICK
I have seen THREE BILLBOARDS and it’s incredible. Can’t recommend it highly enough. But am also very excited to see the new film from Paul Thomas Anderson PHANTOM THREAD. James, Film Officer

HUGH JACKMAN
BUZZ Hugh Jackman has become a fantastic movie star. He
can sing, he can dance, he can act! Is there anything he can’t do. This is his first musical since LES MISERABLES and it looks visually stunning. Containing great big song and dance numbers in the old fashioned musical sense. Think HELLO DOLLY and OKLAHOMA. This is the sort of original musical that doesn’t come along very often anymore so grab it with both hands and enjoy it while you can!

It’s a race against time as the mob captors become more volatile and brutal.
PRISONERS
BUZZ Most of the buzz around this film has been the last
minute recasting of Christopher Plummer as J. Paul Getty (replacing Kevin Spacey). Director Ridley Scott had barely a month to reshoot all of the scenes and re-edit the film. It looks like a real edge of your seat thriller to start the year with a bang!

DIRECTOR Saul Dibb | STARRING Asa Butterfield, Sam Claflin, Paul Bettany, Toby Jones | SPECIFICATION (12A), UK 2017. 108 Mins
SYNOPSIS Set over 4 days in March 1918 in the trenches on the front line, a small group of soldiers wait to be bombarded by enemy artillery, anticipating certain death. The story charts the tension and claustrophobia of the officers’ dug-out as new recruit, 18-year-old Lieutenant Raleigh joins the company commanded by 20 year old Captain Stanhope, his former childhood friend and hero, who has changed almost beyond recognition.
BUZZ Following great reviews from the London Film Festival, Saul Dibb follows up SUITE FRANCAIS with this adaptation of RC Sherriff’s much loved WWI play. A fantastic all-star British cast bring the story to life with an amazing realism in the photography.
SPOTLIGHT Journey’s End was first performed on the stage in 1928 and has since been adapted for film four times, most memorably by James Whale in 1930. Although RC Sherriff struggled to get the play to the stage, being told that ‘people don’t want war plays’, since it’s first production it has rarely been off the stage.

ROYAL OPERA EXHIBITION ON HOUSE SCREEN CEZANNE: PORTRAITS TOSCA OF A LIFE One can’t appreciate 20th century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Featuring interviews with curators and experts, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least-known of all the impressionists – until now.
A candle-lit church, Scarpia’s gloomy study with its hidden torture chamber and the false optimism of a Roman dawn: this handsome production throws into relief the ruthlessly taut drama, as the tension is wound up towards a fateful conclusion. Puccini’s meticulously researched score is infused with the same authentic detail, from distant cannon fire during the Act I Te Deum to tolling church bells and the sounds of a firing squad.

SYNOPSIS The real-life story of three men whose brave
act turned them into heroes during a highspeed railway ride. August 21, 2015, the world watched in stunned silence as the media reported a thwarted terrorist attack on a train bound for Paris, an attempt prevented by three courageous young Americans traveling through Europe. Throughout the harrowing ordeal, their friendship never wavers, making it their greatest weapon and allowing them to save the lives of the more than 500 passengers on board.
BUZZ Clint Eastwood has continued to make vital, important
films and this, his 36th feature film at 87 years old, is no different. Eastwood took the fascinating decision to cast the three main heroes with the actual people involved to give the film a sense of realism that actors couldn’t. This is as much a tale about friendship as it is about bravery.

BUZZ Sally Hawkins wordless performance as the cleaner

The cold war setting is beautifully realised with outstanding set design and photography. All of Guillermo del Toro’s influences come to fruition in this perfect culmination of his directorial style.
MILAN
Digital Marketing Officer The Shape of Water looks like a beautifully captivating film, which will immerse all your senses.
