HI FILM FANS, We are going to print just before the Oscars, so still in the dark about who has won! March is usually a quieter month for film after the flurry of Awards season, but we have some great stuff for you this Spring. Another new film from Steven Spielberg this month, READY PLAYER ONE looks excellent. Along with PETER RABBIT for families and ISLE OF DOGS for older kids. GHOST STORIES is a tongue in cheek horror from one of the creators of The League of Gentlemen. There’s some more dramatic fare before all that though, with MARY MAGDALENE telling the controversial Bible story. YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE is the new thriller from director Lynne Ramsay starring Joaquin Phoenix as a war veteran doing a job no-one wants to do. We also have screenings of the Golden Globe winning LADY BIRD. The award for longest title goes to THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY, based on the best-selling novel about WW2 on Guernsey. And then, Blockbuster season starts in good stead with AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. Probably the biggest superhero movie ever assembled with a huge cast! Everyone who’s anyone is in this one, from Captain America to Iron-Man, Spiderman, Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Hulk... This list is never ending!

MY PICK

I’m a huge fan of Wes Anderson and his last film THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL was out Staff favourite film of 2015. So ISLE OF DOGS is top of my list to catch at the flicks. It has all the usual weird stylings of a Wes Anderson movie and quirky humour. James Tully Film Officer

23 FEBRUARY

DIRECTOR Craig Gillespie | STARRING Margot Robbie, Allison Janney, Sebastian Stan | SPECIFICATION (15), USA. 119 Mins SYNOPSIS Competitive ice skater Tonya Harding was never the perfect image of grace and her overbearing mother pushes her through the ranks at the U.S Figure Skating Championships, but her future is thrown into doubt when her husband intervenes.

IF YOU LIKE

THREE BILLBOARDS

BUZZ Nominated for 3 Oscars, including Margot Robbie in the

lead role and Allison Janney as Best Supporting Actress. The script takes whip-crack turns between humour and intense drama as the film rockets through personal tragedy and public success. The main reason people will be talking about this film are the excellent performances.

WOLF OF WALL STREET

FROM

2 MARCH

DIRECTOR Greta Gerwig | STARRING Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Timothee Chalomet | SPECIFICATION (15), USA. 94 Mins SYNOPSIS Christine “Lady Bird” MacPherson is a high school senior from the “wrong side of the tracks.” She longs for adventure, sophistication, and opportunity, but finds none of that in her Sacramento Catholic high school. The film follows the title character’s senior year in high school, including her first romance, her participation in the school play, and most importantly, her relationship with her mother. BUZZ Great Gerwig is only the fifth woman in the history of the

Oscars to be nominated for Best Director. That alone would be worth celebrating, but the film is a triumph, effortlessly relating human emotions in an accessible way. Stunning performances all round and a script that perfectly captures the zeitgeist and coming of age in a small town.

GRETA GERWIG

Long known for her collaborations with her partner Noah Baumbach as co-writer for films like FRANCES HA and MISTRESS AMERICA. This is her first film as a solo director and she has emerged as a real talent. She has an amazing synergy with actors that shines through. We loved LADY BIRD and can’t wait for her next film.

IF YOU LIKED

BILLY ELLIOT

BUZZ This looks like an absolute delight, definitely reminding

us of movies like THE FULL MONTY. A brilliant cast of British actors seem like they are all having fun, particularly Dave Johns after his breakout role in I, DANIEL BLAKE. Dan Cadan is making his directorial debut here and marked himself out as one to watch. This is the sort of comedy that the Brits do best!

A battle of wills soon breaks out as the new owner hatches scheme after scheme to get rid of Peter - a resourceful rabbit who proves to be a worthy and wily opponent. BUZZ Advance word is really good for this, after the brilliance of PADDINGTON 2 there was a worry that this could be a little disappointing. But the reviews are positive and American audiences awarded the film an ‘A’ Cinemascore! This is Peter Rabbit for a new generation - jacket intact!

CAST ALICE

Marketing Assistant “I am intrigued to find out more about the events of JAMES CORDEN the 1973 tennis match... everyone loves a true story, right?! With a fantastic cast, starring Emma Stone as Billie Jean RIDLEY King and Steve DAISY Carell as Bobby Riggs, this looks like a colourful flashback to 1970’s America”.

DIRECTOR Garth Davis | STARRING Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Chiwetel Ejiofor | SPECIFICATION (12A), UK.

120 Mins

SYNOPSIS An authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary, a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth. She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem. BUZZ The new film from the director of LION. This is a classic Bible story made accessible and explored in more detail than before. Great performances and locations with a fantastic director look set to make this movie one for the ages.

ALICE

Marketing Assistant Another epic biopic from the director of Lion (which I thought was great!). A story of love, death and salvation, told from the perspective of a marginalised woman who overcomes the hierarchies around her. I think we might need tissues for this one‌

ROOM

BUZZ This film has been gathering awards on the festival

circuit since last year, and for good reason. It’s an exhilarating arthouse take on the abduction thriller, with amazing editing and direction cutting through the exposition. Lynne Ramsay’s first film since WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN doesn’t disappoint.

DIRECTOR Steven Spielberg | STARRING T.J. Miller, Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke | SPECIFICATION (12A tbc), USA. tbc Mins

SYNOPSIS Set in the near future when all of society is reliant on a virtual reality world called OASIS. When the rich creator of this world dies, he releases a video which challenges all OASIS users to find his hidden Easter Egg, which will bequeath the finder his fortune. Thus begins a race against time to find the biggest treasure the world has ever known. BUZZ The second movie by Spielberg this year! Simply put,

this looks incredible. Based on a huge best-selling novel which is itself an homage to the movies and culture of the 80’s. You’ll spend half the film trying to spot the references in the background! A thrilling and exciting story puts this blockbuster a notch above the usual fare. Can’t wait!

MATT

Assistant Marketing Officer Ready Player One looks like it could be Spielberg’s best action film in years. With more video game characters than I could count and incredible special effects, it’s something ten year-old me would have loved, and I think I’m going to love it just as much now.

ISLE OF DOGS DIRECTOR Wes Anderson STARRING Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum | SPECIFICATION(12A tbc), USA. tbc mins

SYNOPSIS In the future, an outbreak of canine flu leads the mayor of a Japanese city to banish all dogs to an island that’s a garbage dump. The outcasts must soon embark on an epic journey when a 12-year-old boy arrives on the island to find his beloved pet. BUZZ We absolutely LOVE Wes Anderson.

He has created some of our very favourite films over the last ten years and this looks no different. Gathering around his usual collaborators in the cast, he has once again made something that looks and feels very quirky that is universally relatable. His sense of humour shines through this animation.

THE HOUND OF THE BASKEVILLES

BUZZ This really brings back elements of Hammer Horror

from years gone by. The play ran for years in the West End and this film version has been likened to being on a ghost train with dodgy brakes! A fun rollercoaster ride with jumps, scares and laughs. Directors Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson have THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN, Derren Brown and DEAD SET as credits between them, so have a real taste for tongue in cheek horror.

When she goes to visit the island, she makes lifelong friends and takes life changing steps along the way - with the love she comes to feel for each of the Islanders; Dawsey, Amelia, Isola, Eben, Kit and Elizabeth. A beautiful story of love, friendship and the sadness of friends lost. BUZZ This book has legions of dedicated followers and the

film looks to be a big budget telling of the history of the Nazi occupation on Guernsey. A great cast of upcoming Brits lead the way with Lily James fantastic in the lead after her great supporting role in DARKEST HOUR.

SPOTLIGHT

The Channel Islands were occupied by Nazi forces for nearly 5 years from 1940. Anticipating a swift defeat, the islanders used a gentle approach rather than fight. The occupation lasted so long that near starvation occurred for both Islanders and the Nazi forces.
