MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

DIRECTOR Kenneth Branagh | STARRING Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Willem Dafoe SPECIFICATION (12A), UK/USA 2017. 114 Mins SYNOPSIS A lavish train ride unfolds into a stylish & suspenseful mystery. From the novel by Agatha Christie, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS tells of thirteen stranded strangers & one man’s race to solve the puzzle before the murderer strikes again. Also stars Daisy Ridley, Olivia Colman, Josh Gad, Penelope Cruz and, of course, Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot, the greatest detective in the world.

L.A. CONFIDENTIAL

BUZZ The cast alone has us really excited for this. It’s a who’s

who of great acting talent. That’s before you think about the fact that this is one of the all-time great mystery stories from novelist Agatha Christie. Kenneth Branagh is absolutely perfect for this material and despite being set almost entirely on a train, the film looks impressively cinematic. Don’t go spoiling the end for anyone!

Breathe BASED ON A TRUE STORY

DIRECTOR Andy Serkis | STARRING Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy, Hugh Bonneville | SPECIFICATION (12A), UK 2017. 117 Mins SYNOPSIS When Robin Cavendish is struck down by polio at the age of 28, he is confined to a hospital bed and given only a few months to live. With the help of his wife Diana, and the groundbreaking ideas of inventor Teddy Hall, they dare to escape the hospital ward to seek out a full and passionate life together - raising their young son, travelling and devoting their lives to helping other polio patients. BUZZ Although released first and technically his debut, Andy Serkis had already shot his version of THE JUNGLE BOOK before this film and it’s given him the confidence to let the characters do the work rather than the CGI. An uplifting true story with an amazing performance from Andrew Garfield, we predict another Oscar nomination for him. This story really opens your eyes to the medical advances made in the last couple of decades and how they were often driven by individuals with a passion.

FROM

10 NOVEMBER

DIRECTOR Paul King | STARRING Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Hugh Grant, Brendan Gleeson | SPECIFICATION (U) tbc, UK 2017. 95 Mins tbc SYNOPSIS Paddington is happily settled with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens, where he has become a popular member of the community, spreading joy and marmalade wherever he goes. While searching for the perfect present for his beloved Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday, Paddington spots a unique pop-up book in Mr. Gruber’s antique shop, and embarks upon a series of odd jobs to buy it. But when the book is stolen, it’s up to Paddington and the Browns to unmask the thief. BUZZ The first PADDINGTON movie was so much better than

anyone expected it to be. A perfect example on how to update a classic character but retain the charm and innocence of the books. Ben Whishaw is perfect voice casting as the gentle and caring Paddington and the supporting cast all seem to be having a lovely time. We can’t wait to see more adventures of Paddington, especially with Hugh Grant added into the mix.

STEPHEN

Marketing Officer “Paddington is such a well-loved classic children’s character; some may even say a national treasure. The original film was heart-warmingly funny and original, so I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the sequel; it’ll be guaranteed smiles all round for the whole family, especially if you love marmalade…”

DIRECTOR Sally Potter | STARRING Timothy Spall, Cillian Murphy, Patricia Clarkson, Kristen Scott-Thomas SPECIFICATION (15). UK 2017. 71 Mins

SYNOPSIS After she receives a promotion and becomes the secretary of health, a British cabinet politician and her academic husband host a soiree for the political and intellectual elite that starts as a celebration and ends with blood on the floor. A comedy wrapped around a tragedy.

IF YOU LIKED

ORLANDO

BUZZ A wonderfully observed comedy from director Sally

Potter, most well known for her 1992 film ORLANDO. This ensemble cast is absolutely note perfect and once the drama kicks off they really get a chance to flex their dramatic muscles whilst mining the dark material for belly laughs. There’s a lot to be said for brevity and a lot of recent films have outstayed their welcome – this is a short, sharp, shock. A punchy 71 minutes long with not a minute wasted. Timothy Spall in particular shines, as does Patricia Clarkson. You certainly won’t want to be taking tips on how to have a party from this film.

CARNAGE

12 ANGRY MEN

FROM

24 NOVEMBER

DIRECTOR Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton | STARRING Emma Stone, Steve Carell, Bill Pullman, Andrea Riseborough SPECIFICATION (12A), USA 2017. 121 Mins SYNOPSIS The 1973 tennis match between womens world champ Billie Jean King and ex-mens champ & serial hustler Bobby Riggs was billed as the ‘Battle of the Sexes’ and became the most watched sporting event of all-time. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. King was fiercely private and coming to terms with her sexuality and Riggs a showman wrestling with gambling demons. BUZZ Much like the directors’ previous film LITTLE MISS

SUNSHINE, this is a mix of humour and pathos. For us this shines a light on a sporting event we knew little about and is absolutely fascinating and the battle between feminism and chauvinism is more than relevant today. Both Emma Stone and Steve Carrell are brilliant, making this story extremely accessible and drawing you in to see behind the façade of their media personalities to see the real characters.

ALICE

Marketing Assistant “I am intrigued to find out more about the events of the 1973 tennis match... everyone loves a true story, right?! With a fantastic cast, starring Emma Stone as Billie Jean King and Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs, this looks like a colourful flashback to 1970’s America”.

SYNOPSIS A sensual and transcendent tale of first love. It’s the summer of 1983 in the north of Italy, and Elio Perlman, a precocious 17 year-old American-Italian boy, spends his days in his family’s villa transcribing and playing classical music. One day, Oliver, a charming American scholar arrives as the annual summer intern tasked with helping Elio’s father. Amid the sundrenched splendor of the setting, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever. BUZZ A beautiful film packed with emotion. The setting of

the Italian countryside is stunning to look at and an amazing backdrop for this love story to unfold. Timothée Chalamet is a star in the making and Armie Hammer proves he is more than just a pretty face. Michael Stuhlbarg as Elio’s father delivers one of cinema’s finest speeches that I am sure will be regarded as a classic scene.

IF YOU LIKED

SYNOPSIS True story based on the real life romance between a struggling young actor and Oscar-winner Gloria Grahame when they met in London in the late 70s. Grahame was best known for her portrayal of irresistible femme fatales in films such as THE BIG HEAT, OKLAHOMA and THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. When she becomes ill later in life she returns to Liverpool with her young lover to live out her final days.

BUZZ This stranger than fiction story is wonderfully sweet

and captures the London 70s scene perfectly before jetsetting between LA, New York and Liverpool. The romance is understated and feels very genuine. It’s not all rose tinted glasses though as the couple have their struggles. Unexpectedly touching, Jamie Bell is great as the confident yet vulnerable Peter Turner and its great to see him on screen with Julie Walters again some 17 years after BILLY ELLIOT.

SYNOPSIS Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented August Pullman from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family and new classmates struggle to discover their compassion and acceptance, Auggie’s extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out. BUZZ The incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of

August Pullman translates really well to the big screen. Director Stephen Chbosky has sensitivity and care for his subject matter as he did in his debut THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER. This is an emotional ride and doesn’t shy away from that. Based on the New York Times best-seller, fans of the book will not be disappointed.

DIRECTOR George Clooney | STARRING Matt Damon, Oscar Isaac, Julianne Moore | SPECIFICATION (15), USA

2017. 104 Mins

SYNOPSIS Suburbicon is a peaceful, idyllic, suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns - the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge must navigate the town’s dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit and violence. BUZZ A new film from George Clooney always gets us excited,

and the fact that he has collaborated with the Coen Brothers pushes the excitement levels up a little bit further. Clooney has proved an assured director with films such as GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK and THE MONUMENTS MEN. The cast here is equally impressive and we are especially looking forward to seeing Julianne Moore. With shades of David Lynch as well as The Coens, Clooney is scratching the perfect surface of surburbia and finding something darker underneath.

SPOTLIGHT

This is George Clooney’s 6th film as director. Now known as much for directing as acting, Clooney’s style is offbeat and quite different to his heart-throb acting persona. Over the last decade Clooney has worked with and learned from some of the finest directors in Hollywood including The Coen Brothers, Alexander Payne and Wes Anderson.

THE ROADSHOW EXPERIENCE!

Director: Stanley Kramer. (U), USA 1963, 170m Sunday 3 December 12.15pm We are delighted to be able to bring you a full roadshow experience of this classic comedy. The film will be introduced by ‘The Last Projectionist Standing’ DAVE NORRIS with some historical insight into the film. Dave presented the film recently at The NFT as his ‘Guilty Pleasure’. When a gangster kicks the bucket (literally), he passes on information about some hidden loot to a group of strangers. Thus begins a mad-cap, slapstick cross country journey as our characters do anything to get to the loot first. At the time of the release this was an epic comedy with a huge cast directed by Stanley Kramer, known more for his serious films such as Judgment at Nuremberg. We will be playing this film in the extended theatrical version complete with overture, intermission and screen announcements. It’ll be a treat for the whole family and film fans alike. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this classic on the big screen.

DIRECTOR Bahrat Nalluri | STARRING Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer, Jonathan Pryce | SPECIFICATION (PG), UK 2017. 104 Mins SYNOPSIS THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS tells of the magical journey that led to the creation of Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and other classic characters from ‘A Christmas Carol’. Directed by Bharat Nalluri, the film shows how Charles Dickens mixed real life inspirations with his vivid imagination to conjure up unforgettable characters and a timeless tale, forever changing the holiday season into the celebration we know today. BUZZ From the director of MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A

DAY comes this charming comedy drama. Dan Stevens, who recently played The Beast in Disney’s live action BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, stars as Charles Dickens alongside Jonathan Pryce and Christopher Plummer. The way the film dips into Dicken’s life and lets his characters cross-over into his world to inspire him is a wonderful device and drives this very innocent look at the famous novel.

DIRECTOR Rian Johnson | STARRING John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill | SPECIFICATION (12A) tbc, USA 2017 | 150 Mins tbc

SYNOPSIS Luke Skywalker’s peaceful and solitary existence

gets upended when he meets Rey, a young woman who shows strong signs of the Force.

BUZZ Like most people, we are excited to see THE LAST JEDI.

Most plot details are being kept under wraps and are very secretive but from the trailer the film already looks visually impressive. It seems as though Rian Johnson has created a great addition to the Star Wars universe. There are, of course, tinges of sadness with this being Carrie Fishers last Star Wars film after her untimely passing last Christmas. This new Star Wars trilogy is already bursting with new characters that we can’t wait to see again – Finn, Poe Dameron, Supreme Leader Snoke, Captain Phasma, Rey, Kylo Ren as well as old returning characters like Leia and Chewbacca.

SPOTLIGHT

This will be the last Star Wars appearance for Hollywood legend Carrie Fisher. She was famously dismissive of her costumes in the original trilogy and was always the first cast member to give George Lucas some cheek about the plot holes in the movies. She was as sparky off-screen as she was on-screen. She will be sorely missed.

BRAWL ON CELL BLOCK 99 (18)

DIRECTOR Trish Sie | STARRING Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld | SPECIFICATION (12A) tbc, USA 2017. tbc Mins SYNOPSIS After the highs of winning the World Championships, the Bellas find themselves split apart and discovering there aren’t job prospects for making music with your mouth. But when they get the chance to reunite for an overseas USO tour, this group of awesome nerds will come together to make some music, and some questionable decisions, one last time. BUZZ The Pitch Perfect series is a surprisingly entertaining and

enjoyable franchise. It is widely credited for bringing acapella singing back to young groups. The ensemble cast have a lovely natural chemistry that feels like dropping in on old friends. It’ll be great to engage with a film that’s funny and doesn’t take itself too seriously. There’s positive messages of friendship amongst the jokes and songs but it’s not the main focus – that is to have a good time!

LONDON FILM FESTIVAL REVIEW ‘17 I was very lucky last month to attend the BFI London Film Festival 2017. Due to a training and travel bursary supported by The South East Film Hub I was able to spend some time seeing the movies that are going to be exciting audiences over the next few months and I wanted to take some time to recommend some to you now. My favourite film from the festival was Martin McDonagh’s THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI. A darkly comic drama with a powerhouse performance by Frances McDonald as a mother who challenges a local police chief to find the murderer of her daughter. It’s a stunning film with funny moments but very human and complex. It’s already a front runner for best film at the Oscars and we hope to be playing it in the new year.

Other films I loved include Luca Guadagnino’s CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, S. Craig Zahler’s BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 and Yorgos Lanthimos’ THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER. All of which we are playing in this season. I recommend all of them – although you’ll need a strong stomach for BRAWL… A few for the radar next year are Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy romance THE SHAPE OF WATER, Paddy Considine directed boxing drama JOURNEYMAN and the new comedy from Alexander Payne DOWNSIZING. I hope that’s a good few films for you to look out for. Thanks again to the South East Film Hub for their support!
