Not just fit–CrossFit BY ANDREA JONES
Who says being fit has to be boring? Why spend hours at the gym, doing the same routine, day after day? Not only does it get monotonous, repetition is not an effective way to get and stay fit. Think of it like this: While you’re riding a stationary bike, you may feel the burn in your butt and thighs, but the rest of your body is just sitting there, letting a specific group of muscles do all the work!

Honor Flight of Sou t The World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., unveiled in May 2004, was constructed to honor the sacrifices that so many brave men and women made for our country. This war lives in recent memory as one of the most personally frightening, hitting close to home and threatening our society and our culture. For many people, a trip to Washington would be a vacation, something to be undertaken in free time and for pleasure. WWII veterans are of an age where travel has become increasingly difficult, and many may never have the opportunity to visit this memorial that means so much, that was built in recognition of them and their work. Honor Flight Network is working to ensure that all veterans have the chance to visit their memorials, and they’re starting with World War II survivors.
The first flight took off in May 2005, with six small planes and 12 ecstatic veterans. The experience meant as much to the pilots as to the veterans, and Honor Flight was born. Subsequently, commercial aircraft were used to accommodate the hundreds of veterans on the waiting lists and to better deal with medical requirements, such as wheelchairs, and weather that might ground a smaller plane. Since 2005, Honor Flight has partnered with airlines and community leaders throughout the United States. The non-profit organization has expanded to 121 chapters, or “hubs,” in 41 states. Colorado proudly hosts three: Northern Colorado, based in Ault; Rocky Mountain, based in Denver; and our very own Honor Flight of Southern Colorado, based here in Colorado Springs.
History As an idea, the Honor Flight Network began in late 2004 in rural Ohio, when Earl Morse, a physician assistant and private pilot, asked some of his WWII veteran patients whether they would visit “their” memorial. For many, it was an unlikely dream. When he asked one veteran after another whether each would like to go with Morse, the response was overwhelmingly positive. Morse brought the idea to his aero club, with the caveat that each pilot must pay for his own plane rental, which would cost between $600 and $1200 for the day. Eleven pilots volunteered, none of whom had ever met the patients.
“Now it is our turn to take care of them as they have taken care of us.”
Statistically, around 800 WWII veterans die every day, and while more than 99,000 have benefited from Honor Flight’s work, there are many more who have not had an opportunity to see their memorial firsthand. The focus right now is to help those veterans, as well as terminally ill veterans of other wars, travel to Washington and receive the recognition that is their due.
The goal is simple: to help “every single veteran in America, willing and able of getting on a plane or a bus, visit THEIR memorial.” Looking to the future, Honor Flight Network hopes to serve more veterans, including those of the Korean, Vietnam, and more

Honor Flight of So. Colorado In February 2011, a meeting was held at Peak Grill to discuss the possibility of opening a hub in Southern Colorado. In attendance was Lana ForeWarkocz, who went at the urging of her father, and Sal Ingraldi, President of Honor Flight. First Lieutenant James Fore proudly served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, even surviving time as a prisoner of war in a German concentration camp. He was enthusiastic about the project, and he supported his daughter as she went on to become the Vice President of the chapter’s executive board. Yet just days after that inaugural meeting, Fore was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer, and he died a few short weeks later. For his funeral, he asked that donations be made to the organization in lieu of flowers. In June 2012, just one year after the first conversations had begun, the Honor Flight of Southern Colorado made

Spring Cleaning BY PAUL BLAIR
The leaves are coming back, the flowers are blooming, the snow is finally melting and the April rain showers are arriving to help nourish the landscape. You have better things to do than worry about the seasonal upkeep of your home. Cleaning the gutters, trimming the landscape, weatherproofing - these are just some of the minor and major home repair tasks that find their way on to a “to do” list every season. You don’t always look forward to tackling those tasks, but they are necessary to ensure your home’s value and efficiency. This season, give Mr. Handyman your “to do” list, and he’ll take it from there. Ensure your home repair and maintenance projects are done by a trustworthy and high quality handyman. Mr. Handyman conducts thorough background checks on all technicians, who are also bonded and insured. All technicians are company employees, not sub-contractors. You can feel confident allowing our technicians into your home – that’s the Mr. Handyman difference.

Vacuuming cleans your carpet by lifting debris, but it doesn’t help with locked-in dirt and stains. Steam cleaning goes a step further, soaking your carpet and drawing out that entrenched grime, but it can leave your carpet wet for hours or even days. That’s where Chem-Dry’s patented hot Carbonating Cleaner comes in. Using minimal moisture, small carbonated bubbles work to loosen dirt from the fibers of your carpet and draw them to the surface, where they can be more easily removed. Carpets can be dry in just one or two hours, rather than the 12-24 hours from steam cleaning. And with a shorter drying time, you reduce the likelihood of residual moisture or soap encouraging bacteria growth or trapping more dirt from the environment. To deliver a deeper, healthier carpet cleaning, ChemDry uses the power of carbonation and 80% less water than traditional carpet cleaning methods (kind of like using club soda to remove a stain on a shirt). Its primary solution, The Natural® is green-certified, non-toxic and
Have you ever gotten rid of a stain just to have it show up in the same place again days or weeks later? This can happen with spray-on cleaners or steam cleaning because, in many cases, the stain was never removed to begin with. Other cleaning methods may mask the appearance of the entrenched stain by removing just the top visible layer and pushing the stain deeper. And if soap is left behind, it can draw dirt back to the area. Chem-Dry’s The Natural® solution dives deep into the fibers, forcing all the foreign matter to the surface, leaving no stains behind. Chem-Dry has been around for over 35 years and can be found in more than 4,000 locations worldwide. The carpet cleaning franchise is ranked #1 in its category in Entrepreneur Magazine’s Franchise 500 listing.

its first trip to Washington, with 12 veterans and four staff members.
In advance of the third trip, Honor Flight of Southern Colorado has several activities planned:
Every trip is memorable for all involved. They begin with departure rallies, and arrangements are made beforehand so the veterans may travel unimpeded through the airport, often amid the cheers of fellow travelers. Schoolchildren write letters that are read during the flight, and when they land in Washington, they are met at the airport by Congressmen. Each trip lasts about three days and includes visits to each memorial on the National Mall as well as a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. The average cost of the trip is $1000 per veteran, but the cost is entirely assumed by the organization.
May 14, 7:30 p.m.: The Southern Colorado chapter will be showing the film Honor Flight at the Cinemark Tinseltown theater in Colorado Springs. May 19, 12 p.m.: Song Spinners will host lunch and a show at the VFW at 430 East Pikes Peak Avenue in Colorado Springs. Lunch begins at noon, and the Spinners will present at 1 p.m. Tickets are just $10 at the door.
Future The waiting list for the Southern Colorado hub alone gets longer each day that passes, and the third flight will be at the end of this May, while the next flight is tentatively planned for September. Ideally, there would be four full flights per year, but due to the nature of the charity and the availability of funds and volunteers, this remains a goal for the future.
