Director’s Introduction
Despite the recession customers at Dunstaffnage have greatly enjoyed their sailing and seem to be using their boats much more than in previous year’s. Sailing with a well equipped boat still represents the very best of memorable fun for all the family and for all ages. Spring of 2010 saw the usual small attrition of boats moving away for various reasons such as a change in personal circumstances, a house move to another part of the country or simply retirement – if that is indeed ever possible with boat ownership!! What resulted from that departure was that when the Dunstaffnage Management Team brought in the replacement vessels
from the marina’s waiting list of prospects the increase in boat size was dramatic with the average size increasing by over 10 feet. Given this information it was decided that a new 40-tonne Hoist should be ordered to accommodate the weight and beam of larger boats. Looking back over the last 10-15 years boat design has changed and modern sailing yachts seem to be much beamier. By running two hoists at Dunstaffnage it is hoped that the launching season can be cut dramatically by getting the wintered boats back in the water as soon as there is a decent window of weather in the early spring.
BT Open Zone There is a new BT Open Zone Wi-Fi system that has a number of base stations located around the marina and indeed also on the pontoons themselves, thereby providing a reliable internet service with few black spots. For contractual reasons it has taken Dunstaffnage longer than they would have wished to provide this excellent service. The Wide Mouthed Frog Dunstaffnage Marina would like to welcome Chris and Cathryn as the new long-term tenants at the Wide Mouthed Frog. Chris and Cathryn come with a wealth of experience in the catering industry and
as such intend to provide an excellent level of service to existing marina berth-holders and passing visitors. I do hope you will take an opportunity to call in and visit their facilities. ISO: 9000 Quality Certificate The Marina achieved the Industry Quality Kite Mark of ISO: 9000 in October 2010 the only marina in the UK to do so to date. The staff all worked very hard to get this Certification and it allows the business to measure its level of quality and traceability to its customers especially where “work on boats” is concerned which has grown dramatically in the last 12-months. Customers want quality
throughout the sailing world and at Dunstaffnage it is the Company’s aim to improve as many aspects of the business as is possible. I wish you an enjoyable and safe boating season in the year ahead.
Neil McLauchlan Managing Director

General Safety Considerations
We are happy to hold boat keys both for emergency purposes and access by third parties where we have been advised by prior notification.
Please walk and do not run on Walkways or Pontoons as they can be slippery when wet or icy in frosty weather, and always use the handrails on the access bridge. Take care at all times and never cut corners across the pontoons. Please remember alcohol can impair your ability to walk along the pontoons safely!

Fire
We comply with recommended safety guidelines issued by the National Marina Federation. Lifebuoys and access points are provided at strategic points. However, the marina pontoons float so due care must be taken.
Please ensure there are no live electricity cables lying on the pontoon, and avoid overloading the supply to your vessel, because this can cause a fire. Each outlet is only 16amp, if in doubt of your usage please ask a member of staff.
We recommend that children should always be in the company of an adult and should wear suitable life jackets when on the pontoons or on board any vessel. Berth holders should ensure that their guests are aware of safety considerations and we advise that guests should be accompanied by the berth holder on the Pontoons.

Due to legislation regarding the resale and use of red diesel, we have had to prohibit the movement of red diesel on marina property; Customers handling petrol are requested to use extreme care at all times.
Trolleys are provided for the convenience of our customers and should be returned to the trolley park after use. The trolley park is located at the head of the gangway. Please avoid overloading your trolley, especially at low water as it can run away from you down the bridge. Children should not be allowed to play with these trolleys as accidents can happen! Pets can be exercised within the marina grounds, but should at all times be kept under control. Please ensure that your pets do not foul the pontoons, grassed areas or car parks.
Heads

Please remember if in doubt about where to park your vehicle, or if you think that you may impede the movement of any vessels, trailers or machinery, please contact a member of the boatyard staff. We are the only marina in the UK with this accreditation; making all our team quite proud, we can only seek to improve the business for our customers. To fully comply we are required to provide a list of accredited suppliers and contractors, ensuring all work undertaken on our business premises meets our standards and all have third party insurance cover. We trust you will be pleased with this arrangement and support our accredited suppliers, contractors and advertisers in our year book. An updated list of approved suppliers and contractors is posted in the Marina office and is available on request. Anyone wishing to carry out work on the marina must seek permission from the Marina Manager Mr. Tim Aitkenhead. Yet again the Marina is close to capacity, the 2011 season is almost fully booked. More clients have taken our 12 months package deal this year, so please remember to book early for your winter storage. Last winter we had 165 boats ashore with a record 55 staying afloat. There has been an increase of new berth
20
holders too, some are local and others are from more distant parts of the UK, clearly reflecting the exciting sailing grounds the West Coast has to offers. A new Travel Hoist with a 40ton lifting capacity is now ordered, and should be here in the middle of the sailing season. This will enable the business to handle larger vessels than we have at present. The west coast is now becoming more popular and boats seem to get bigger every year, there was a time when a 36ft sailing boat was a pipe dream for many, now this seems to have grown to a 44ft with a beam that is wider than our present hoist can handle. It’s not just a tonnage capacity we require but a boat beam is a major consideration. Due to recent financial global events, the number of berths is the same, however this is likely to be increased in the not too distant future from 180 to 250 fully serviced berths, allowing us for the first time to carry a number of designated visitor berths The car park is working well, with West Highland being the only time we’ve been at maximum capacity. Although

the parking is primarily for our berth holders and mooring holders, parking for short term customers who wish to sail from here for their summer cruise or club event, is available on request. Please enquire at “Shop @ West Coast which is located on the first floor above the new showers and laundry where you can collect your parking permit and make any payment for parking or berthing fees due. Please avoid using the upper car park as this is now reserved for Wide Mouthed Frog customers, all car parks are CCTV monitored from three locations. Shop @ West Coast our busy shop, offers a wide range of Douglas Gill clothing and sailing boots, quality leather footwear from Dubarry of Ireland. Also a wonderful range of sailing and sports watches with Swiss movements from Nautica, plus of course a comprehensive range of chandlery. This year we aim to carry a stock of stainless steel and brass fixing (nuts bolt and screws) to complement our existing stock of skin fittings, ball valves, anodes, clocks, barometers and binoculars. Other items in stock include marine paints, varnish, brushes, rollers and personal protective clothing, safety equipment, electrical goods and cleaning products, all offered at competitive prices.
Our Workshop team have winterised and serviced more engines this year than in the past, with a number new engines being fitted over the winter season. Last season saw several of our customer’s boats with underwater damage, some slight and one or two quite severe. All these repairs have been undertaken at Dunstaffnage along with many different aspects of remedial boat work including engineering, fabrication, rigging, electrical engineering, domestic water systems and valeting. We are only too pleased to quote for any requirements you may have. However if you require work that we cannot undertake for whatever reason, we do have suppliers and contractors who are authorised to work at our Marina. Dunstaffnage Marina with its varied associated business on site, and the car parking facilities make it the ideal venue for any large sailing club or water sports event; extra berths will make a great difference in the size of events we could easily manage. Although we are the best, we would like to be better! In these difficult economic times we urge all our customers to support our advertisers whenever possible, your support is valued at all times and we thank you.

Brokerage Over the past year we have sold a record value of boats from our brokerage at the marina, including two Salona 37s. Most have sold exclusively through our own brokerage services, with some selling through a shared brokerage using Boatshed westscotland. com. We have joined our services on a number of occasions giving our vendors an alternative option. Boatshed is a website led company with an international network and database, lifting the profile of some boats offered for sale. This has worked well, with more enquires coming from the south or the UK, and Europe, sometimes the eventual sale resulting in a boat being transported to the south or even away from these shores altogether. Although a joint agreement costs a little more it can be more productive. If you would like more information about a joint brokerage agreement using Dunstaffnage and Boatshed westscotland. com please don’t hesitate to contact either Michael Leach here at Dunstaffnage or Ian Sawkins at Boatshed who will be pleased to help. We still operate our exclusive brokerage services which have been very effective over the past ten years. Although mainly selling boats from the Marina and Dunstaffnage Bay, we are able to list boats in different locations on the west coast, with agreements in place, contact Michael Leach to discuss the sale of your boat.

RNLI
Sea Safety
As a prospective or existing boat owner I am sure that you have supported the RNLI previously by putting money in a collection box. There is however even more options to help the RNLI to help you!
Sea Check
Why not have one of our volunteers come onboard your boat and discuss your individual boats safety equipment confidentially and at your convenience.
Calling for Help!
Why not get some club mates or friends together and request an RNLI ‘calling for help’ demo. These demos include instruction on how to fire flares, use a DSC VHF radio and many more
modern and traditional ways of announcing you are in distress or require assistance.
Man Overboard Demo
Have you ever tried to get somebody back onboard your boat? Why not give it a try onboard your boat using different methods and a RNLI dummy. This demo can be done for individual boats and is best attended by all the crew.
Sea Survival Demo
What’s it like to be in a liferaft? If you hire the pool we can provide the liferaft and qualified instructors to give you a taste of abandoning ship. To make it even more real why not wear a lifejacket and oilies and discover what it is all really like.
Follow our top six tips 1. Wear a lifejacket 2. Check your engine, fuel and sails 3. Tell somebody where you are going 4. Carry means of calling for help 5. Keep an eye on the weather and tides 6. Get training We in SEA Safety are here to help you, your family and friends be safe and enjoy boating. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require help, SEA Check or any of our demos. Argyll Blast Services Another successful business on site and specialising in the removal of anti-foul and Gel Coat preparation for Epoxy Treatment. Owned by Allan Strang and operated by his son Donald here at Dunstaffnage Marina. Argyll Blast Services can remove all your old anti-foul which could have been applied over the last twenty years in some cases. After removal you can have an epoxy treatment if required, or several base coats of standard primer followed by the anti-foul of your choice. Giving your boats hull a new lease of life, by having a smoother finish it can increase your speed over ground and reduce fuel consumption. This type of work can be undertaken under the supervision of a surveyor, ensuring the hull is coated when free of moisture and fully documented by a third party. With a written report from your surveyor on completion it can only add to the value if your boat is offered for sale. All types of paint and rust removal from solid substrates are no longer a problem at Dunstaffnage Marina. Flaking anti-foul; Rusting keels or even vintage vehicle parts can all be returned to as new condition, by using various types of abrasive the impossible can be achieved. Just ask Allan for a quote and advice on all aspects of his services.

Highland Tiger New to Dunstaffnage this year is a 39ft Wildcat catamaran “Highland Tiger” which is owned and skippered by Chris Jackson, “Highland Tiger” is available for private and commercial charter as well as daily sailings from our pontoons. Manufactured by Safehaven Marine, Eire, the Wildcat is powered by twin 420Hp inboard diesel engines, giving a cruising speed of up to 23kts and a top speed of 30kts. Licensed to MCA CAT2, means that the vessel is not restricted in its area of operation and can safely operate anywhere around the Western Isles. Chris has sailed extensively around the Western Isles, frequently making the passage to St Kilda, and has in-depth knowledge of local waters and wildlife. Scheduled cruises will
vary in length between two and ten hours, or you can arrange to have exclusive use with your family and friends. The waters around the Firth of Lorn and the Sound of Mull are surrounded by amazing scenery, steeped in history and abundant in wildlife. A day’s cruising with Highland Tiger could see you sailing past historic castles, visiting Mull and the distillery at Tobermory, enjoying lunch in a quiet bay, or perhaps spending time looking for whales, dolphins, basking sharks and eagles. You won’t be crammed on board with hordes of people either, with the maximum number of guests carried limited to a comfortable 12. There’s ample seating both on deck and in the spacious
wheelhouse – a small galley and onboard toilet facilities ensure guest comfort while on board. If you’d like a great day out or a relaxing evening cruise you can check Highland Tiger’s itinerary at the marina office or online at www.chalicecharters.com.
