Captain’s Foreword

I

t is a great honour and privilege for me, as Captain of Haggs Castle Golf Club, to welcome you to our inaugural yearbook, particularly in this, our Centenary Year. This yearbook is intended to provide visitors, guests and potential members with an introduction to our club, its course and facilities plus a little insight into some memorable moments in the club’s history. Our parkland course is situated within the grounds of the beautiful Pollok Estate and is surrounded almost entirely by woodland. So much so, it is hard to believe when playing that Glasgow’s City Centre is only three miles away. At 6,426 yards for men and 5,615 yards for ladies, our course offers some particularly interesting and challenging dogleg holes and provides a very fair test of golf. Tested in fact by some of the world’s finest professionals for four years in the mid 1980’s when we hosted a European Tour event which produced great winners in Bernhard Langer, Ken Brown, Howard Clark and David Feherty.

Once you have used our brand new changing and locker room facilities you can warm up for your round by using our practice areas which include a long hitting area, two chipping greens, a putting green and a net. Our Professional Campbell Elliott and Assistant Professional Karl Salmoni can therefore also provide top class long and short game tuition. After hopefully a most enjoyable round of golf, our clubhouse bar and lounge with its friendly staff offers an extremely relaxed atmosphere where you can dine or just enjoy a refreshment with an excellent view out onto the 1st Tee and 18th Green. This yearbook does provide some very useful information and extremely fine images of Haggs Castle Golf Club and Course, however you will only fully appreciate the experience by visiting us for a game. We look forward to welcoming you soon. Graeme Shaw Captain 2010

Clubhouse

he Clubhouse offers a warm, relaxed and friendly atmosphere and is the perfect place to regale your friends with tales of those missed putts and the shots that got away after an enjoyable round of golf.

The locker rooms, showers and toilets have undergone a major refurbishment, as has much of the Clubhouse, and now provide changing facilities that compare with any club in the country. Haggs Castle has an unprecedented reputation for fine food and whether it be a snack, a meal or dining for that special occasion Head Chef, Billy Murray, can always be relied on to provide his unique brand of excellence. The Burns Supper held at Haggs each year has an unenviable reputation as being one of the best, if not the best, in the world! Throughout the year Club Members delight in the efficient and friendly service provided by Tracey Morgan and her team, where nothing is too much trouble.

Ladies’ Captain

t is a great privilege and honour to Captain the Ladies Section of a golf club with a wonderful history reaching back over 100 years. We are extremely fortunate to have such a pretty parkland course within a short distance of the city centre and, as a consequence, we do have a very active Ladies Section.

Recent renovations to mark our Centenary Year are of a very high standard and have given us a club in which we can all take great pride. We certainly have an exciting year ahead with many Centenary Events. We look forward to welcoming friends and guests from other clubs to share in what will definitely be a memorable year for us all.

Our teams participate in the InterClub Friendly Matches, the South Side League and the Greenlees Trophy. Over the years we have had great success with our Greenlees Team and last year we were delighted to find ourselves promoted to the 2nd Division. With some new younger members we hope to improve once again this year. From April to September we hold competitions almost every Tuesday with some extra Stableford competitions on a Thursday. We have two ballots in the morning and one in the afternoon plus a running ballot from 3pm until 6pm. The new 9 hole competitions have proved extremely popular and, for that reason, we have introduced several more this year. Lady Full members enjoy the opportunity to play a competition on Saturday mornings. We also run Silver, Bronze and Foursomes Knockout Trophy Competitions for ladies with handicaps.

Every year the club host a Ladies’ Open Day and this year the format will be a Four Ball Better Stableford for members and guests. This is already proving to be extremely popular and we anticipate having a full field. During the winter we run a weekly Sweepstake over 9 holes and a Knockout Singles and Foursomes over the same number of holes. There are a couple of ‘fun’ competitions at Christmas and Easter and this is combined with a social gathering for lunch. There is also a Ladies Bridge Group and a Mixed Bridge Group who meet at the club once a week. We also have at least two winter socials and these are chosen by the Captain. This year we held a very successful dinner with a Guest Speaker and also a Bridge Drive with lunch which was attended by 100 ladies. At certain events we run a raffle to raise funds and each year we send the monies raised to the Captain’s Charity of choice. One of our great hallmarks is the feeling of camaraderie within the section and ladies of all ages are tremendously supportive of our events. We are also extremely fortunate to have such a sense of loyalty amongst our members. Jennifer Mack Ladies’ Captain 9

H

aggs Castle Golf Club has always had a commitment to the development of Junior Golf and the Council have, over many years provided a budget to encourage and support young golfers at the club. The budget is used to provide free or subsidised coaching to young golfers at all levels and provide support to emerging talent. The Junior Section has its own Captain and Committee who are encouraged and assisted by two Junior Conveners and the Match Secretary to organise and administer the Junior Section. We have a Junior Section Team who participate in the inter club Fleming Watson League. In 2004 the Club were awarded SGU/ SLGA Junior Charter Accreditation for their commitment to Junior Golf. The following year in an initiative to encourage more young people to participate in golf the Club reduced the entrance age from 12 years to 8 years. In addition to make the game more affordable the annual subscription for 8 – 11 year olds was reduced by 50%. In the succeeding 5 years Junior Spring and Summer Golf weeks were established and these have now become an integral part of our calendar of events. The main focus

Juniors of these weeks is to provide young golfers with an enjoyable mix of ability based coaching, fun skills challenges and competition. All coaching is delivered by our two fully qualified PGA professionals who oversee the week’s events. In 2008 a Haggs Castle Junior Open event was established for both boys and girls and this has become very successful in attracting over 100 young golfers from the Glasgow and West of Scotland areas. In 2009, to further enhance the opportunities that the Club offer to young golfers, a Junior Development Committee was set up and is working with the Golf Foundation, Club Golf and Glasgow District Council to establish links with local schools with a view to providing opportunities to promote golf to a wide range of young golfers from all social and ethnic backgrounds. Haggs Castle Golf Club welcomes young golfers and will continue to build on the principles set out in the Junior Charter to provide an innovative and structured approach to coaching and young golfer development. Our aim is to provide a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment that will encourage participation in Golf.

Supporting Haggs Castle Centenary Year

Pollok Country Park Haggs Castle Golf Club is set in Pollok Country Park which is Glasgow’s largest park and the only Country Park within Glasgow. Its extensive woodlands and gardens provide a quiet sanctuary for both visitors and wildlife. The Park is rich in rural history formerly being part of the Old Pollok Estate and ancestral home to the Maxwell Family. The Park is also home to the world famous Burrell Collection, a purpose-built gallery opened in 1984 to house the unorthodox and eclectic collection of artefacts gifted to Glasgow by Sir William Burrell.

The City of Glasgow Glasgow has long been established as an excellent place to live, work, rest and play. As a major European cultural capital, it is also a great place to visit. Glasgow has a reputation for being the friendliest city in the world. Around Glasgow, ancient buildings and historical streets and monuments relate a fascinating and influential past. Glasgow’s elegant streets are lined with some of the finest and most beautifully preserved Victorian buildings. Around the city are unique examples of Glasgow’s most renowned architect and designer, Charles

Out and About

Rennie Mackintosh (including the famous Glasgow School of Art, and of the equally gifted Alexander “Greek” Thomson. ‘Glasgow’ means ‘dear green place’, recognising the fact that Glasgow has over 70 parks and open spaces, more than any other city its size. Many of them contain some of the city’s main galleries and attractions, facilities for recreational activities, and many fine examples of Victorian sculpture. Glasgow has over 20 wonderful museums and galleries, each with its own individual collection and events programme, and all with free admission.

Sport is an integral part of Glasgow’s culture, reflected in the city’s designation as a UK National City of Sport 1996-99 and its reign as European Capital of Sport in 2003. The city that hosted the Great Exhibitions of 1888 and 1901, and was designated European City of Culture 1990 has a full and exciting

range of entertainment venues and activities. Since the city’s first university was established in 1451, Glasgow has been hailed as a powerful seat of learning. Lord Kelvin, Adam Smith and James Watt are just some of history’s great thinkers associated with the city’s academic past. 17

PGA European Tour Events at Haggs Castle Golf Club

H

aggs Castle Golf Club enjoyed a golden period in the ‘80s when the Club hosted 4 European Tour events, all of which attracted high quality fields.

In 1983, we had The Glasgow Golf Classic, won by Bernard Langer on 6 under par by one shot from Vincente Fernandez, with the closest British players Nick Faldo and Ken Brown. 1984 saw the name changed to The Glasgow Open, won by Ken Brown with a score of 266 and a record breaking 11 shot lead, with Sam Torrance second and Sandy Lyle third. In 1985, the second Glasgow Open caused great excitement when Sandy Lyle, fresh from his triumph in the Open at Royal St. George’s agreed to play. Sandy and Howard Clark tied before Clark took the title in a sudden death play off at the second extra hole. With a change of sponsor in 1986 and the return of Lyle, the Championship was renamed the Bell’s Scottish Open and again went to a play off won by David Feherty with Ian Baker-Finch second and Christy O’Connor Jnr third. This was to be the last time this Championship was played at Haggs, “Bell’s who owned the Gleneagles Hotel taking the tournament there the following year.

The tournaments were covered live, first by STV and later by BBC. Haggs Castle, the PGA and its then Executive Director Ken Schofield and the European Tour players share happy memories of this period and many tributes were paid to the superb condition of the course from, among others, Ken Brown “Haggs Castle …made for an exciting test … greens the best we played on all season …I wish the European Tour played on more courses like Haggs Castle …a top notch traditional parkland course in summer conditions, a challenge the players never face now” Most of these tributes were directed at Chris Kennedy, our Head Greenkeeper, who later became Course Superintendent at Wentworth, where he still serves. Haggs Castle was privileged to host these Tournaments when a bond was formed between the Tour and the Club and friendships made that endure to this day. Since that time the Scottish Open is now well established as a major tournament , held at Loch Lomond every year, the week before the Open Championship.

23

H

aggs Castle Golf Club was formed in 1910 and takes its name from the Castle built in 1585 by Sir John Stirling Maxwell of Pollok, which is one of Glasgow’s oldest buildings. Interestingly, Haggs means boggy marshes and it was recorded back then that the land in the area required much draining.

Thanks to the ideas of a Mr J Campbell Murray and the considerable efforts of William Mowat, George Paterson and John Peacock the Club was formed in 1910 and a nine-hole course was built on ground leased from Pollok Estate. In the early twentieth century the popularity of golf was at an all time high and Haggs Castle became the third club to be established on the Stirling Maxwell’s Pollok Estate after Pollok Golf Club in 1892 and Cowglen Golf Club in 1906. Sir John Stirling Maxwell would seem to

24

have been one of golf’s most ardent advocates, but his encouragement was not entirely altruistic: the tentacles of the city of Glasgow

were spreading and a proliferation of rolling green golf courses on and around his estate provided him with a most effective shield and guaranteed that the outlook from Sir John’s beautiful home, Pollok House, would remain unspoiled. When the newly appointed Chairman, William Mowat, and his acting committee met to consider the first list of applicants for membership in 1911, they granted immediate membership to those who were ‘Feuers or Residents’ on the estate of Sir John Stirling Maxwell. This priority listing was enshrined in the first Constitution of the Club, which stated that ‘Feuers and Residents’ of the Stirling Maxwell estate were to comprise two-thirds of the membership of Haggs Castle Golf Club.

The Club had opened with a ninehole course but the committee began petitioning the estate almost at once for additional land, so that they could extend to a full eighteenhole facility. The First World War delayed this but finally an eighteenhole course was opened on 7th April 1923.

Other than some disruption during the Second World War years the course remained the same until the early 1970’s when a planned Motorway extension necessitated a relatively major course reconstruction. It is quite hard to believe now that each day hundreds of cars drive over the site of the old 1st and 2nd holes. This course alteration would prove to be very significant for the club and for four years in the mid 80’s this layout would test the skills of Europe’s best professional golfers. As a result Haggs became recognised as one of Scotland’s top parkland courses

History Haggs experienced further course alterations in the late 90’s, this time to accommodate the White Cart Walkway. So not only did we have folk driving over the old 1st and 2nd we now had folk walking and cycling over our old 10th and 11th. There was undoubtedly some concern at the time about further change however as the years have gone by and the course has matured and it is fair to say at Haggs the members are all delighted and very proud of the course we play today.

Haggs Castle Golf Club was formed in 1910 and takes its name from the Castle built in 1585 by Sir John Stirling Maxwell of Pollok 25

The Course

he course is parkland in design and is a challenging but fair test of golf, with a variety of holes. It is not a hilly course but with the woodland coming into play on many holes and with a number of strategically placed bunkers it makes for some interesting course management decisions. As a result of sitting on relatively flat carse land formed by ancient marine clays there are only very gentle slopes to contend with. Probably because of this and to aid drainage, raised greens are a characteristic of Haggs Castle and accuracy of approach can be essential. During the 1990’s the construction of the M77 motorway entailed the loss of some ground to the club and six new holes have been created to redress the balance. Designed by Dave Thomas they keep very much to another theme which previously characterised Haggs Castle – position. Dogleg holes are de rigeur here and on the new stretch (the 4th to the 9th) even the two straighter par 4’s (5th and 6th) require some positional thought.

Hole 6 Par 4 - Yardage 321 Accuracy off the tee is essential. The drive must be centre/right to open up the green. Beware of the ditch on the right and big hitters watch the run out to the burn. 28

Hole 13 Par 4 - Yardage 323 Beware of the Cart River to the right – out of bounds beyond this! Iron off the tee is a good idea even if it leaves a longish second shot.

Hole 14 Par 4 - Yardage 426 Excellent par four. Tee shot must be down the middle to leave a tricky long shot through a funnel of trees to a well-bunkered two-tier green. 29

Visitors and Societies

O

nly 5 minutes from the centre of Glasgow and 15 minutes from the airport it is easy to see why Haggs Castle is a popular venue for visiting golfers and Societies. Ease of access is only a small part of the experience of Haggs Castle. Whether you are a single golfer or an organised party you can be assured of a warm welcome and a day to enjoy the very best of Scottish hospitality. The course provides a challenging but fair test of golf and with woodland coming into play on many holes and with a number of strategically placed bunkers it makes for some interesting course management decision. We welcome visiting golfers in an informal style. Jackets and ties are not required and all we ask is that smart, casual dress is worn. Additionally, we would ask that all visitors observe the rules of golf etiquette and its traditions both on the golf course and in the Clubhouse.

The Cameron Corbett Vase

T

he Cameron Corbett Vase is the second oldest amateur golf tournament, after the Tennant Cup, still being competed for annually in Great Britain. It was named after Archibald Cameron Corbett whose family were prominent in British politics and land ownership in the 19th and 20th Centuries and gifted a large part of the Thornliebank Estate (Roukenglen) to the citizens of Glasgow. The Vase dates from June 1897 when it was first played for at Toryglen Golf Club, near Rutherglen. The Tournament was suspended during both World Wars, before resuming in 1946, at its new home of Haggs Castle Golf Club, after the war where it has

remained ever since, Toryglen Golf Club was developed for housing by Glasgow Corporation, apart from one year in the early ‘70s when Haggs was undergoing reconstruction and Williamwood Golf Club acted as temporary host. Starting as a 1 round (18 holes) event, it was increased to 2 rounds (36 holes) in the ‘60s and in the ‘70s to 4 rounds (72 holes) over Saturday and Sunday. The competition is now held in July, 2 weeks before the Open Championship and counts towards both the SGU Order of Merit and the World Amateur Golf Rankings, thus ensuring a high quality field. The Vase has been won 6 times by members of Haggs Castle Golf Club.

The Vase dates from June 1897 when it was first played for at Toryglen Golf Club, near Rutherglen.
