DISCOVER 2010 | HISTORY & HERITAGE
History & Heritage Discover times past… explore our ancient history from anglo-saxon to present day
The Yorkshire Coast is steeped in history and heritage – from Viking invasions to pilgrimages celebrating the Christian faith, you will find out what has made Scarborough, Whitby and Filey the towns they are today. The towns have literary connections too! Dickens and Tennyson are said to have drank at Whitby’s Inns and Charlotte Brontë was a regular visitor to Filey – her sister Anne favoured Scarborough and chose to end her days there. Her grave can be found in St Mary's 12th Century Churchyard. All three towns have a strong fishing heritage which still provides employment to many local families.
10

Scarborough first attracted visitors to the town because of its spa waters which were thought to have medicinal qualities. One of the earliest entrepreneurs to recognise the value of tourism was Dickie Dickenson, a local celebrity with eccentric manners and a mild deformity, who leased the land adjacent to the spring for £1 per annum and then sold mug fulls of the spa waters to visitors. Scarborough’s museums tell this story and others like it which make the history of the area come to life. Whitby’s Abbey dominates the East Cliff headland and keeps watch over the town as it

has done for centuries. The nearby St Mary’s church is one of the only churches in England to have a central pulpit and worshippers can be ‘locked’ in to their family pews. Whitby is also famous for its Jet Jewellery which was made popular by Queen Victoria when she was in mourning for Prince Albert. St Oswalds Church in Filey is a legacy left to us by our Norman forefathers, built in 1180 and finished in 1230 it is a testament to the struggle for Christianity and the discovery of a Saxon Fort.

Delicious Dining Just like the county itself, Yorkshire food is diverse, ranging from the wholesome to the sweet but always… delicious!
You have probably heard of the saying ‘When in Rome’… and we belive that a visit to our region should be no different. When in Scarborough, Whitby or Filey, one experience not to be missed is to sample some traditional Yorkshire Fayre.
14
Yorkshire Coast’s first and foremost resorts
14543 SHA guide 10_FC-19 16/11/2009 15:01 Page 17
Probably the most famous of all Yorkshire fayre is the Yorkshire Pudding. Although no-one really knows how far back the recipe goes it is safe to say that some form of ‘batter’ or ‘dripping’ pudding as it was previously named, has been around for centuries. It was originally cooked in a tin beneath the meat which was being roasted on a spit over the fire so it could catch all the drippings from the meat. This made the pudding much flatter than the version we eat today. As well as being eaten prior to or with the main meal, leftover Yorkshire Puddings are also delicious served with jam and cream and eaten as a sweet. Another traditional Yorkshire dish is fish and chips which can be eaten inside or out. Our three resorts are all thriving fishing towns and you can see the fish being brought into the harbour early in the morning and be sat
www.scarborough-whitby-filey.co.uk
in a restaurant later that day eating that day’s catch. Another fishy favourite is Whitby Scampi which is served in pubs and restaurants up and down the country. Of course, our three towns don’t just offer traditional Yorkshire food, we have a wealth of international cuisine to tempt your tastebuds from Italian, Thai, Chinese, Indian, French, American etc. We also offer a variety of eateries from small homely cafés to large fish restaurants, intimate bistros to country pubs, takeaways to award winning restaurants. So, whether you like Yorkshire ice cream, Yorkshire jams and conserves, Yorkshire beer and ales, you will have a feast of a time here on the Yorkshire Coast. Don’t forget to check out our ‘Eating Out’ advertisers on pages 66 & 67, and look at some local recipes.

VisitBritain (Enjoy England) (VB) and the Automobile Association (AA) have developed a system for rating accommodation based on quality and range of facilities and services. All the establishments listed in this publication are members of one of the schemes run by the AA and Visit Britain, and every advertisement will contain the logo of one or both of these, showing the star rating of the establishment on a scale of one to five stars. Eating Out
14543 SWF Guide pages 66-67 13/11/2009 10:02 Page 1
Eating Out On this double page spread you will find ideas of where to go and eat whilst visiting Scarborough, Whitby or Filey. We have lots of local connections to food and some items have been named after local places… Brompton Water Cakes, East Riding Pudding, Harrogate Sponge Cake, Richmond Short Cakes, Sledmere Gingerbread, Whitby Potato Whirls and Yorkshire Dales Cake to name but a few. Below are three of our best known recipes for you to try at home.
Yorkshire Puddings
Yorkshire Dales Cake
Ingredients
Ingredients
140g plain flour (this is about 200ml/7fl oz) 4 eggs (200ml/7fl oz) 200ml milk Sunflower oil, for cooking
• 1lb butter • 12oz mixed peel • 1lb sugar • 2lb currants • 8 eggs, well beaten • 8oz glace cherries • 1¼lb flour • 4oz almonds, chopped • 1 nutmeg, grated • 1 large wineglass brandy • 1 large teaspoon baking powder • Grated rind and juice from 1 lemon
Instructions 1. Heat oven to 230C/fan 210C/gas 8. Drizzle a little oil evenly into 2 x 4-hole Yorkshire pudding tins or a 12-hole non-stick muffin tin and place in the oven to heat through. 2. To make the batter, tip the flour into a bowl and beat in the eggs until smooth. Gradually add the milk and carry on beating until the mix is completely lump-free. Season with salt and pepper. Pour the batter into a jug, then remove the hot tins from the oven. Carefully and evenly pour the batter into the holes. Place the tins back in the oven and leave undisturbed for 20–25 mins until the puddings have puffed up and browned. Serve immediately. You can now cool them and freeze for up to 1 month.
Instructions Beat the butter and sugar, add the beaten eggs, and fold in the other ingredients. Put into 2 greased 2lb loaf tins and bake in a moderate oven for about 4 hours.
Sledmere Gingerbread Ingredients • 5oz butter • 2 teaspoons ground ginger • 11oz self-raising flour • 4oz golden syrup • 5oz caster sugar • 1 dessertspoon brandy • 1oz chopped mixed peel

Rub the butter into the flour, add the sugar, peel and ginger. Dissolve the golden syrup in the brandy and mix into the flour mixture; it should have a soft consistency. Put into a greased 8in-square shallow tin and bake in a moderate oven for 1 and a half hours.
