Manager’s Message
Hello Heritage Hunt! We made it through what seemed like a month of nothing but rain in May, but the outdoor pool is open and summer is “unofficially” here. So get out to the pool and enjoy the sun that’s on the way. While you are at the pool, you will notice some plywood temporary covers over openings in the pool deck. These are the prep work areas for the installation of permanent shade canopies, which will significantly increase the shade at the pool. Please be careful as you sit near one or walk around it as they have edges an inch or so above the concur surface. The final installation is scheduled for Monday June 26, so we will have to close the pool for that day. As the day gets closer, we will communicate what you need to know, so keep an eye on the website and the e-Communicators for more information. Let’s give a big thank you to the Facilities Committee for the time and effort it took to get this project selected, approved and installed. Mark your calendars for one of the most significant days in our community history coming up on June 28. That is the day that there will be a special meeting to vote on approval of Phase 1 of the Master Plan. The Special Meeting, specifically for the voting is slated for Wednesday, June 28, in the clubhouse ballroom. You will be receiving a voting package in the mail shortly after the 9th of June and voting will be available on-line or by proxy beginning on June 14. This vote of approval will kick off implementation of the recommendations given by the Master Plan Consultant, St. Mawes LLC. Since the February final Town Hall presentation, the Board has met almost weekly with resident input to identify specific projects to focus on during the first Phase. To move forward, they request every member to vote YES on the upcoming ballot. In addition to this mailed special meeting notice residents may view details online about this important community measure. I would encourage you to read the article in this issue about how to vote and to take time to become informed prior to casting your vote. Heritage Hunt has always been a well-recognized active adult community and the implementation of Phase 1 over the next couple of years will help continue that trend. I would be remiss to just focus on the amenities and not mention other programs for all of you. Yes, happy hour and monthly pool parties are back at the outdoor pool (watch for announcements). These along with the monthly concerts, free movies, excursions and special food & beverage events are sure to give you some fun, entertaining options. As a baseball fan I see the June 29 excursion where the Nats take on the reigning World Series champs (Cubs) as a must do event. On a personal note…I want to wish a Happy Father’s Day to all the dads. I was fortunate recently to create a lasting memory with my daughter—an early Father’s Day gift After 2 full days, including about 20 hours in the air and 11 hours on a train, we arrived to do volunteer work for a week at an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai, Thailand. What made it even more special was that we were there to celebrate our shared birthdays. (Yes, she was a birthday gift to me 32 years ago). It doesn’t get any better than that; although this old guy was a little beat up at the end as it was a lot more work than I anticipated. It was good to get back, though and now let’s step up and get our community behind the Master Plan. It will be good for your enjoyment of life at Heritage Hunt and certainly shouldn’t hurt your property values in this competitive market. Your Board of Directors has been hard at work formulating the Phase 1 HOA Master Plan projects. Based on open meetings held in March and resident input a 13 project list was created and presented at community meetings on 4/21 and 5/31. The estimated cost of these projects, which include Fitness Center expansion, connecting and covering the Club House porches, added parking, moving the tennis courts to the Marsh Mansion, adding 2 more Bocce Courts and a lower level lounge area, is $3.8 million. We have determined that we do not need to borrow funds as we can self – fund the projects with funds already collected and incoming home resales. All of this information is on the Home Page of the HH website. The Board plans a community vote on these projects at a special meeting Wednesday June 28, starting with registration for in person voting at 6:30 pm in the Club House Ball Room. Voting can be done on line, by proxy or in person at this meeting. An insert in this Horn shows the ballot with supporting documentation including frequently asked questions/answers related to the Master Plan and the proposed projects. On 6/9, the formal ballots and information will be sent to all Homeowners. Your Board requests a YES vote. A YES vote will enable our community to maintain and enhance its property values. Another project which has been in the works for 6 months and is now ready to go, is our newly designed Heritage Hunt Website. The new site includes all of the resident requests from last year’s survey. It will also allow our webmaster the ability to change out and add sections without waiting for the website firm to take these actions. Life Style Director and Webmaster Mark Hillis will do a tutorial workshop for the new website on 6/9 at 10 am in the Mt. View Room before the website goes live on (or about) 7/1/17. He will also be do a second workshop at the 7/11 Resident Forum and more can be scheduled as needed. Also, as we are coming up to mid- year 2017, we need to start thinking about our annual elections and asking again that all residents really consider getting involved with their community. We will have 29 seats up for election including three on the Board of Directors. In the July Horn, each of the Committees and the Board will describe what they do for the Community and ask that you come to their meetings to see in person how each and every one of them serves Heritage Hunt. Get involved, it is our community and we need to keep moving forward and involving more and more of our residents. The Resolutions that were approved at the 4/27 Board meeting are listed below. Please note that due to Horn Publishing dates, this information appears a full month after the meeting. Residents can always go to the HH website to read the full meeting minutes within 2 weeks of the meeting. Also, questions can be addressed to members of the Board, our Community Managers and/ or our Committee Chairs: • Approved (7-0) to accept Phase 1 of the HOA Master Plan • Approved (5-2) to allow purchase of 300 additional banquet (Chiari style) chairs for the Ball Room. Special HOA Meeting: June 28
Heritage Hunt Homeowners’ Association will hold a special meeting for its members to vote on a funding plan for implementation of Phase I of the Master Plan. Notice of Special Meeting The official notice of the special meeting will be mailed to all homeowners of record during the first full week of June. The Special Meeting of the Heritage Hunt Homeowners’ Association will be held on Wednesday, June 28, in the Clubhouse Great Oak Ballroom. Registration begins at 6:30 PM with the meeting called to order at 7:30 PM. Your participation in the meeting is important. Property owners in good standing may vote. One vote per lot may be cast. Renters are not eligible to vote unless given a proxy by the owner of record.
Three Ways to Vote: Proxy - Paper ballots and a proxy envelope are included in the official notice of the special meeting. Please remove the ballot from the booklet, complete and enclose the ballot in the proxy envelope. You must complete all applicable fields on the proxy envelope for it to be considered valid. Please be sure to sign and have a witness sign your proxy envelope as this is required by the Association documents. Anyone may witness your signature: a spouse, neighbor, friend, or management staff. Turn in your proxy by 5 PM, Tuesday, June 27, to the Clubhouse Front Desk or place it in one of three drop boxes (beside the Clubhouse Front Desk; on the lower level near the Food and Beverage Staff offices, or in the Marsh Mansion foyer). Proxy envelope/ballots are not accepted after this time nor at the meeting. You may vote by proxy from June 14 to June 27 by 5 PM. Electronic – To cast your votes using a secure third-party balloting system, please follow the directions included in the Special Meeting Notice and log in using the password provided. Online voting begins June 14 at 8 AM and ends at 5 PM, Tuesday, June 27. In Person at the Meeting: Registration will begin at 6:30 PM, Wednesday, June 28, in the Clubhouse Great Oak Ballroom. Check in at the registration table corresponding to your last name: A-D, E-H, I-L M-Q, R-U, or V-Z. Once registered you will receive a paper floor ballot. You may cast them in the designated ballot box prior to the meeting or when the vote is called during the meeting. The meeting will be called to order at 7:30 PM. Voting Questions and Answers What’s the difference between an instructed proxy and an uninstructed proxy? Your proxy is instructed if you mark the ballot and enclose them in the proxy envelope. Your proxy is uninstructed if you wish another individual (proxy holder) to obtain your ballot and vote on your behalf. Can I revoke my vote after voting online or after turning in my paper proxy? Your online ballot cannot be changed or revoked because the votes are recorded anonymously. If, after submitting your paper proxy, you decide to change your vote, you may obtain and complete a second proxy envelope and ballot (obtain from Mark Hillis in the Marsh Mansion HOA office); the most recent cancels the earlier proxy. If, after submitting your proxy, you decide to attend the meeting to vote in person, The Heritage Horn • June 2017

Accountability Budget Finance Committee (ABFC)
This is our new name. You knew us as Budget and Finance. All committees were asked to go over our charters. We looked over what Resolution NO 6, our charter, and decided we did more than the original charter has listed. What is a charter? Basically, the HHOA” By Laws give the Board of Directors the power to appoint and disband committees, advise the Board of Directors on finance and budgetary matters, and the committees responsibilities are in the charter. Our committees are made up of residents who volunteer to run for committees of their choice. Committees are usually made up of not more than seven members. We would like you to know what we do or as our chapter says are our Responsibilities. • Review the monthly financial reports prepared by our management agent. Look at the numbers, compart them to the budget and ask questions where needed. • When a committee wants to purchase or enter into a contract that presently is over $10,000, they need to get approval of our committee before going to the BOD for final approval. • Review the activity in our reserves • Review the Annual Audit • Coordinating the budget for operations and reserves • Cash management of our operating cash • Write an article for the Horn This is a partial list; I do not want to scare you from volunteering. Most members on this committee are not accountants. All you need is be willing to help out overseeing what the HOA’s income, expenses, assets, liabilities and equity is, compare them to budget, ask questions of why and how a large purchase is made and learn about what goes on in your HOA. Hope you decide to run; we will have five openings in 2018. Barbara Marotta, ABF Chair, CPA, MBA 8

Advisory Committee for Strategic Planning (ACSP)
The Advisory Committee for Strategic Planning recently reviewed and revised its Committee Charter. Our Charter delineates the Committee’s responsibilities, eligibility, and elections. The Charter also outlines the process for electing officers, holding meetings and providing liaisons to other HOA Committees. New Committee members are encouraged to review the Committee Charter to familiarize themselves with HOA rules and processes. It is important to note that the ACSP is a Board appointed Committee. As such, our members are not elected but appointed on an “as needed” basis by the Board of Directors. Our primary responsibility is to maintain and update the HOA Strategic Plan by keeping abreast of trends in lifestyle and updates in technology that identify current and future potential community issues and needs that will satisfy current residents, attract the next generation to our community and enhance the quality of life in the community. The ACSP acts as a “creative think tank” and offers ideas, opinions, research, etc. to the Board to ensure ongoing alignment with our current residents and how we can appeal to our target markets’ wants and needs. The Future Residents Sub Committee reports directly to the ACSP. All HOA Committee Charters can be found on the Heritage Hunt Website. For more information, please access the Committee Charters on our website and learn more about how our HOA governance structure works for the benefit of all residents. Cathy Walsh, ACSP Chair

Community Open House Thank You Residents!
The Future Residents Subcommittee wants to thank all who participated in the Community Open House on April 23rd, and ALL the Heritage Hunt residents who told their friends about it. The survey card, filled out by all the guests who came, indicated the largest number had heard about the event from their friends who are current HH residents. We asked you to ‘tell your friends,’ and YOU DID! On that day, there were 17 homes For Sale that were held Open by the Realtor. As a result of that day, several homes were sold. The Realtors communicated that they were very pleased with the turnout. A big THANK YOU to all our resident volunteers who manned the tables and met with our guests. You did an amazing job in explaining the highlights of living in HH, answering their questions and encouraging them to live here. You told us that the COH guests were well informed and serious buyers, which was very encouraging. Great job! October 1st will be our next Community Open House. Again, I will ask for your help by telling your friends to consider living in Heritage Hunt and, from previous experience, I know you will. If you would like to volunteer to help, please feel free to contact me. Thanks again for your fantastic efforts! Susan Coyle, Future Resident Subcommittee Chair

CRC Resident Forum
The Community Relations Committee (CRC) sponsors the popular Resident Forum Series featuring speakers sharing professional experiences, hobbies or other areas of expertise with residents of our community. The Forums are held at the Heritage Hunt clubhouse in the Mountain View Room on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Please check HHTV, the Heritage Horn and the clubhouse bulletin board for further updates. June 13 - Lawrence “Robbie” Robinson returns to share more of his experiences as a sixth generation descendant of Gentleman Jim Robinson. Gentleman Jim was a slave freed by his master, Landon Carter, given a parcel of land and became a successful businessman in the 1700’s. We are surrounded by his history! Robbie will be joined by Charles “Chuck” Mauro, a local historian and author of several books, who has researched and is publishing a book about Gentleman Jim. Robbie will also share details of his NHRA accomplishments and involvement with several business, fraternal and civic organizations! July 11 - Mark Hillis, our Lifestyle Director, will give a workshop on the new website. Some of the subjects he will focus on will include: logging in, personal profile settings, member and event directory search, reservations of tee times, dining and special events, community bulletin board posting, and general site navigation of community and club news to help keep you connected to all of the happenings in Heritage Hunt. The CRC invites Heritage Hunt residents to share their experiences and/or recommend topics/speakers for future Resident Forums. If you or someone you know has experiences of interest to the community, or if you have a request for a repeat/return speaker, please contact Emily Russell at 703 743-1875 or by e-mail at erussell10@comcast.net Emily Russell, Community Relations Committee

You may be aware that on April, 6, 2017 six tornadoes touched down in Northern VA. These tornadoes ranked EF-0- the lowest intensity level. They caused uprooted and snapped trees. Also some structural damage. Tornadoes are nature’s most violent storms. They come from powerful thunderstorms. They appear as a funnel- or cone-shaped cloud with winds that can reach up to 300 miles per hour. They cause damage when they touch down on the ground. They can damage an area one mile wide and 50 miles long. Before tornadoes hit, the wind may die down, and the air may become very still. They may also strike quickly, with little or no warning. BEFORE: Build an emergency kit. Make a family communications plan. Look for the following danger signs: — dark, greenish sky — large hail — large, dark, lowlying cloud — loud roar, like a freight train. DURING: If you are in a building: Go to a safe room such as a basement, cellar, or the lowest building level. If there is no basement, go to an inside room like a closet or hallway. Stay away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls. Do not open windows. Put on sturdy shoes. Protect your head. If you are in a trailer or mobile home: Get out immediately and go to the lowest floor of a sturdy nearby building or storm shelter. If you are outside with no shelter nearby: Get into a vehicle and buckle your seat belt. Put your head down below the windows and cover your head with your hands and a blanket, coat, or other cushion. If there is no car or shelter, try to find a ditch or area lower than the ground and lie down. You are safer in a low, flat location than under a bridge or highway overpass. AFTER: Wear sturdy shoes or boots. There may be broken glass or nails on the ground that could hurt you if you stepped on it. Never go near or touch dangling or loose power lines. They could electrocute you. Text, don’t talk. Unless there’s a life-threatening situation, if you have a cell phone, send a text so that you don’t tie up phone lines needed by emergency workers. Plus, texting may work even if cell service is down. DID YOU KNOW? The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has a free app that will enable users to receive weather alerts from the National Weather Service for up to five locations across the nation. This feature allows users to receive phone alerts on severe weather happening anywhere they select in the country. Even if the phone is not located in the area. Making it easy to follow severe weather that may be threatening family and friends. This app empowers individuals to protect themselves and to assist and support family and friends before, during, and after a severe weather event. There is never a dull moment with us! We have many exciting projects underway and I would like to fill you in on some of them. The new green pool shades (which will match the Heritage Hunt green color) are expected to have the posts installed before Memorial Day and the Canopies up by the Fourth of July. We are waiting for PWC to give us the OK to start the project. Every consideration will be given to Resident safety as we do the installation during Pool season. Along with all the fun things planned at the pool, I am looking forward to a fantastic summer season with more shade available should one desire it. Another project getting underway is the installation of a new elevator in Marsh Mansion. This difficult project has been on our To Do List for several years. Thank you for your patience. The Marsh Mansion stairs are curvy and beautiful, and it will be so much nicer to just admire them and take the new elevator to the second floor! Lastly, I want to mention that we are adding a more modern, very popular chair, referred to as a Chiavari Chair, to our Ballroom. Please note, I said adding... the current chairs are still going to be available, but now event planners will have a choice. The new chairs will be Gold with a replaceable seat cushion. We are beginning to look at repainting and updating the Ballroom somewhat, so this is a beginning step. I’ll keep you informed as we work further on this project. On another note, long time Committee member and former Chair, Al Stearns, is moving to Ashby Ponds and will no longer be a Heritage Hunt Resident effective June 1. This creates an opening on our Committee for an enthusiastic resident who enjoys working on a variety of ever changing projects. We meet one time a month, usually the first Thursday at 1 PM in the Mountain View Room. It is a pleasure to work along side such a capable group of volunteers who represent all walks of life. Our common goal is to keep our buildings, pools and tennis courts well maintained and even improved upon. Would you consider being a part of this effort? If so, please call me at 703-743-1121 or email me: lwagners@juno. com. I l look forward to hearing from you to discuss the Committee in more depth. Until next time... Question: What do a golf ball and a high performance racecar have in common? Answer: They both get up to speeds of over 100 miles per hour in a matter of seconds. Question: Where do you want to be when either is moving at that speed? Answer: Anywhere but in their path. Policy Resolution 9, Golf Course Regulations, Section VIII, Prohibited Activities, Letter “A” states, “During operating hours, only golfers and persons authorized by the HOA or golf course operator are authorized to be on or use the golf course, including cart paths. Walking (including walking of dogs), jogging, bicycling or any other presence on the golf course by nongolfers during operating hours is not permitted.” The regulation is there for everyone’s safety. When the average golfer hits a golf ball, that 1.62-ounce solid, dimpled sphere travels at a speed of between 105 and180 miles per hour. It could sting and leave a nasty welt if it hits soft tissue. It could cause serious bodily damage or death, if it hits you in the head, knee, arm, etc. You cannot outrun a ball moving at that speed or duck quickly enough to avoid being hit. None of our members are ready for the senior tour. The best players have been known to “occasionally” hook or slice balls and have them end up nowhere near their intended targets. Grass, water, sand, or trees should stop these balls, not resident, grandchildren, or pet bodies. Please, do not walk or allow a member of your family to walk on the cart paths or the course during the hours of operation. The hours vary with the season. Currently, the first tee time is 7:30 a.m. and the final one is 7:00 p.m., which means that golfers will be on the course until after sundown. In addition, the maintenance crew is out with the heavy equipment long before the fist golfers hit the course. We want everyone to enjoy the beauty of our community and to also keep out of harms way. Thank you for your cooperation. Walt Meyer, Golf Committee Chair

USGA Handicap Index and Course Handicap What do they mean?
A USGA Handicap Index, issued by a golf club or authorized golf association, indicates a golfer’s skill and comes as a number taken to one decimal place (ex: 17.2). A USGA Handicap Index is issued only to individuals who are members of a licensed golf club. A USGA Handicap Index compares a player’s scoring ability to the scoring ability of an expert amateur on a course of standard difficulty. A player posts his/her scores along with the appropriate USGA course ratings to make up his/her scoring record. A Handicap Index is computed from the last 20 scores in the scoring record. It reflects the player’s potential because it is based upon the best 10 scores of the last 20 rounds. Your USGA Handicap Index goes with you from course to course and from state to state. Your Handicap Index is used to determine your Course Handicap. A Course Handicap is the number of strokes a player receives based upon the relative difficulty (Slope Rating) of the course and set of tees being played. Your Course Handicap is determined by applying your USGA Handicap Index to the appropriate Course
Handicap Index (contd.)
Handicap Table. Course Handicap Tables are located in the clubhouse pro shop. There is a Course Handicap Table for each set of tees used by men and by women. At Heritage Hunt a member’s Handicap can be entered in the system by utilizing the computer located at the clubhouse lower level golf area or the GHIN system on the internet. The Handicap for each Heritage Hunt member is updated bimonthly (1st and 15th of each month) and posted on the clubhouse bulletin board. These are based on the tees from which each member plays and is adjusted as a different set of tees is used. Golf Handicap Committee

Gardener’s Garden More Flowers On Each Plant

If you want more flowers on your plants this summer, one thing worth getting brave about is ‘topping’, pinching back or just shearing in half a flowering plant after a few weeks of growth. Another worthwhile effort is diligence in cutting off old, spent flowers. Starting with the latter, there are two very good reasons for taking the time to remove spent flower heads from your plants~~one is to prevent the plant from setting seed (which uses 20 percent of its energy doing so), and second is to encourage the plant to re-bloom. Many plants only bloom once (such as the peony, allium, tulip, so forth), but removing those spent flowers still is good because it strengthens the plant by not allowing it to go to seed---resulting in stronger plants next year. Plants which will continue to put out new flowers with more regularity and vigor if you remove the old flowers (before they make seed pods, heads or hips) include most roses, zinnias, marigolds, sweet alyssum, butterfly bush, black-eyed Susan, cranesbill geranium, bee balm (monarda), coneflowers, mums, the list goes on. New flowers either come from new top growth or branching in the lower leaf axil joints. When cutting bouquets, try not to cut too far down on the stem or you’ll lose axil joints. When you leave old flowers on the plant, it thinks it has accomplished its mission in life: to propagate. It goes to seed and expends a lot of unnecessary energy, unless you want it to seed. That being said, I have several plants which I want to come back next year from seed, including Hesperus (Dame’s Rocket), foxglove (digitalis), larkspur, rose campion, impatiens, and lobelia (cardinal flower). To my first comment of shearing or pinching the leafy green parts of a plant back, doing so makes it a little shorter, bushier and will give you more flowers (works for annuals as well as perennials). Do it to your mums (up to the 4th of July), asters, impatiens, petunias, any tall yellow flowers (like helianthus), lespedeza, winter-hardy hibiscus (definitely necessary) and regular geraniums. It takes time to deadhead
and cut back, but ‘more flowers’ makes it worthwhile! PS: After your rhodos are done blooming, carefully snap off each wilted truss of spent flowers so they will not go to seed (which depletes onefifth of the energy of the plant). Sometimes it is easier to use small scissors, ensuring less breakage of new growth.

Safety Is A Community Effort
As an active adult community Heritage Hunt is fortunate to have the many miles of walking paths connecting our amenities and neighbors. We love seeing residents and golfers take advantage of using these paths. As a committee we regularly look at what we can recommend to the Board to enhance the appearance and use of the common areas. Sometimes those recommendations have safety as its sole motivation. This brings to mind our shared responsibility to use care when approaching intersections where people, golf carts, maintenance carts and vehicles meet. Recognizing this, our committee has encouraged posting appropriate signage, specialized street markings, and communication about various work being done so residents, guests and even pets are safe. As individual members of this community it means that we abide by all posted traffic signs and yield right of way to pedestrians as we intersect with each other. The last thing we want for you or a guest to the community is to be a victim of traffic incident. So help keep Heritage Hunt a safe place and do your part as you travel in and out of the community. Chuck Zumbaugh, Grounds Committee Chair

In the April issue of the Horn, we introduced you to the Heritage Hunt Hams, an HOA- recognized club of amateur radio enthusiasts. We briefly mentioned the club’s role in supporting Heritage Hunt’s emergency plan with communications connectivity within the community and to outside governmental and first responder agencies. There’s also a fun side to organized ham communications; it’s called Field Day. Under the auspices of the International Amateur Radio Union (Region 2), the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and the Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) sponsor a Field Day the fourth weekend in June as an annual emergency communications training event. More than 35,000 US and Canadian amateur radio operators participate in this 24-hour exercise designed to rehearse the skills required for rapid deployment of equipment and establishment of communications to support operations under emergency situations. The use of minimum and basic comforts and equipment is encouraged, resulting in operations from tents or cars and equipment powered by generators, solar panels, and batteries. To encourage Field Day participation by individuals and clubs, the ARRL conducts a contest which awards points for the number of other radio stations contacted, equipment and antennas used, satellite contacts, related youth activities, modes of transmission (HH Hams operated CW/Morse Code and voice last year), and other activities designed to promote amateur radio awareness and involvement. Lest you think Field Day is all work, look at the Saturday evening cookout the HH Hams enjoyed last year. One last thing. Did we mention the Home Brews? Come check them out this year. HH Hams will be operating at the same location for Field Day 2017 as we did last year beside the golf course comfort station on Heritage Hunt Drive, 27 and 28 June. Stop by and say hello. For additional information about the HH Hams and Field Day, contact Steve Crouch, KI4SA at 703-743-1237. Julian Cole , KM4DLY

Art Club News
Control your home’s weather, whether or not you’re home.
As of the writing of this article our group is still reeling from the sudden passing of our dear friend and fellow artist, Dick Silva on April 13th. His enthusiasm for his art and our group made him an integral member. Our current art exhibit on the lower level of the club house is exclusively Dick’s beautiful pastels. We are presenting his works as a tribute to his memory. Many pieces will be for sale. The exhibit ends mid-July. For the rest of us learning and improving our skills continues. Three of our members are attending watercolor classes at the Torpedo Factory Annex taught by Catherine Hillis, recently featured in Watercolor Artist magazine. I expect you might see the results of the nine classes at our October clubhouse hanging or at the Fine Art & Crafts Show on November 2nd. We hope you are enjoying the art work of all mediums in the dining room near the doors to the balcony and smaller pieces to be found as you enter the ballroom. They are all created by Heritage Hunt artists. The Heritage Hunt Fine Art Group continues to grow but there will always be room for one more. Karin Vark

Bocce Playoffs and Championship
Bocce is now Heritage Hunt’s second biggest participation sport, behind golf. The league, now in its eighth season has grown from 40 players to 185 and interest continues to grow as we now have three divisions with a total of 28 teams. Mark your calendars for the big games. The playoffs have the best teams in each division battling it out over three weeks including the championship game. Weather permitting, the playoffs are June 3, June 10 and June 17 with matches beginning at 9 AM and ending around 1 PM. The championship is Saturday, June 24 at 10 AM, when the two remaining roll against each other. Matches are two-out-of three 11 point games and will utilize both courts. Come out and watch the best Bocce players Heritage Hunt has. Cheer your neighbors and friends. See some good shots and some that could be better. It’s all part of the game. It’s really a fun social event. The courts are located in front of the Marsh Mansion. Bring lawn chairs as seating is limited. Dave Leveton

Couples Dance
Monday (3-4 PM), Great Oak Ballroom
The Heritage Hunt Couples Dance group will continue their 2017 program with Beginner-Intermediate Waltz in June, which builds on the Beginner Waltz focused on during May sessions. In July the Couples Dance Group will begin East Coast Swing and Rumba. Beginner-Intermediate East Coast Swing and Rumba will be the focus of both July and August lessons. We consider these two dances to form the basic foundation for doing almost any fast dance (East Coast Swing) and any slow dance (Rumba). We will review the basics of both dances throughout July and move to more beginner-intermediate steps in August. In addition to the lessons themselves, couples can practice these steps at the Wednesday evening dances held throughout each month. Some typical songs for East Coast Swing are; Uptown Girl by Billy Joel; Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Seger; and Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley, and some typical Rumba songs are; Spanish Eyes by Engelbert Humperdinck; Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton; and She Will Be Loved by Maroon 5. Couples dancing is great exercise for the body and mind as it improves stamina, balance, and concentration. Let Randy or Kathy know if you are interested or have any questions by calling or emailing (at 703-743-1983, randystachel@comcast.net). Randy Stachel The Heritage Horn • June 2017

Crossroads Food Program
It’s safe to say that none of us in Heritage Hunt go hungry on weekends, or for that matter, any day of the week. We are truly blessed. Living in this community is a wonderful privilege we can easily take for granted. Our refrigerators are well stocked and safe, running water is always available at our kitchen faucet. “Life is Good” as our T-shirts proclaim. But there are children who attend the public schools just around the corner, or right outside our west gate, who are not so fortunate. For no fault of their own, poverty, neglect, or hard times hold these children down in ways we would find difficult to imagine. To be sure, they are a small minority in affluent Western Prince William County. They tend not to be visible to the rest of us. Their parents may be the man mowing lawns, or the woman cleaning homes, or taking orders at McDonalds. They’re working 12-hour days at 2 jobs, 7 days a week, just to pay the rent. Or they’re disabled, unable to work, or just out of work. Sadly, their kids are often left to fair for themselves. Imagine as a child being left home over the weekend with nothing to eat. But even worse, going to school Monday morning with an empty stomach. For the past 6 years Crossroads-Connection, a Christian community service organization in Heritage Hunt, has gradually expanded to meet this need with a Weekend Food Program for 7 local public schools. Thanks to donors and volunteers in our community we are able to provide nutritious, non-perishable food to 64 children at Mt. View, Tyler, Piney Branch, Gravely, and Glenkirk elementary schools, PACE West, and Bull Run Middle School. Each of these schools is located within just a few miles of our front gate. During the school year volunteers help purchase, pack, and deliver food to the schools. We work directly with the counselors who, together with school staff, determine which children are most in need. The children, who remain anonymous, receive the food discreetly each weekend before going home. Beginning in June, Crossroads-Connection will extend the Weekend Food Program through the summer another 10 weeks. Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church of Haymarket is partnering with CrossroadsConnection to ensure these children won’t go hungry during the 10-week summer vacation. They will provide the food and logistics of delivery. All are welcome to help pack. Watch our website (www. crossroads-connection.org) or visit our Facebook page for more information. $250 provides food for (1) child every weekend during the school year, and 100% goes to purchase food. Your tax-deductible gift can be made to Riverside Presbyterian Church (Memo Line: CrossroadsConnection). For more information, to volunteer, or to support this effort, contact Dave or Joan Gifford at 703-743-2109, or email us at crossroads.connection2010@gmail.com. David Gifford

Cycling Club
Our start time remains 9:00 until the middle school is out for the summer, then we will adjust the start time earlier to account for warmer temperatures. May 2nd cyclists rode from Holy Trinity Church out to and around Nokesville (~ 35 miles round trip). May 16th cyclists rode from Vienna (`50 miles round trip) and Bon Air Park (~ 30 miles round trip) to Washington, D.C. to view various monuments. The picture below indicates they visited Roosevelt’s memorial next to the Jefferson Memorial. Five other cyclists rode in the Gainesville / Haymarket area for about 30 miles. As the weather warms, we will be planning addition rides away from HH. We have discovered that there is a new Blue trail east of Leesburg and a new Green trail west of Leesburg. Both trails intersect the W&OD trail. We plan to check them out soon. The Cycling Club is meets every Monday – Friday at the Marsh Mansion, except on days we transport our bikes to start points outside of HH. On Tuesdays the Club conducts a leisurely ride (7-8 miles per hour) lasting 60 minutes (plus or minus a minute or two) over mostly level terrain. The ride stops for a water break at approximately 30 minutes and at Subway at Merchants Square in Dominion Valley for coffee, tea, sodas, and chit chat before returning to HH. These rides continue to be popular with cyclists that are just starting to get back into cycling or like to ride at a very leisurely pace. Persons not yet on the HH Cycling Club email list may get on the list by emailing Bob Shannon at trebor927@gmail.com. Being on the list will allow you to know when weather conditions are considered too severe to ride locally or when the club is going to take a ride with a starting point away from HH. Andy Johnson

Our special guest this month is Neal Wavra, proprietor of Field and Main Restaurant in Marshall. The building of this restaurant sits on Main Street and is over two centuries old. It’s a two story building that had once been a tavern. Back then, area roads ran “from the field to the main street,” hence the name. Neal and his wife, Star, built this restaurant to “nourish the community and celebrate the region. The menu features farm-to-table ingredients cooked over an open fire. Field and Main has a warm atmosphere where folks can gather to enjoy locally sourced food and drink. Neal will share more about his background and why they were interested in opening their own restaurant in rural Marshall. James Brown

Hiking Club
The beginning of April is the peak bloom time for the Virginia Bluebells in the woods along creeks and streams and a sure sign that spring has arrived. After a hiking cancellation due to rain and muddy trails, we took advantage of some beautiful days to hike and enjoy the extra color in the woods at Hemlock Overlook in Clifton. This is a small section of the 19 mile long Bull Run Occoquan Trail that runs from Bull Run Park to Fountainhead Park along the Bull Run, which becomes the Occoquan Reservoir. The approach to the fields of color as you come down the hill approaching the water is amazing! We enjoyed the beauty of our first hike here so much that we came back a week later to do the same hike. We were especially fortunate in our timing this year to hit the beginning and end of peak bloom. This is not an especially long hike, but has all kinds of terrain including hills and many rocks that are an enjoyable way to work on balance! We ended the month hiking at Sky Meadows in Delaplane, a 45 minutes drive west of Heritage Hunt off Route 17 North. It was a beautiful sunny day, however, some of the trails were wet from the rain earlier in the week. Sky Meadow is a beautiful scenic State Park. The Mellon family donated the land to the state in 1975, and the park opened in 1983. We started on Gap Run Trail and North Ridge Trail, a steady uphill up to the Appalachian Trail, the end of uphill for us. Time for a snack and a drink. We followed the Appalachian Trail almost 2.5 miles but did not meet any “through hikers” (hiking from Georgia to Mt. Kathadin, Maine). The rest was a piece of cake, flat and easy with a view of the valley where we started, then some easy downhill through a wide open field back to the parking lot. We decided to eat our lunch on the terrace at the Barrel Oak Winery on the way back. Another beautiful day on the trail! Our June hikes include Great Falls and Bull Run Mountain, which just reopened after being closed all winter. To be added to the HH Hiking Club email contact list please email Margi Worrest at mbworrest@gmail. com. This will keep you informed of where we plan to hike as well as cancellations or changes due to weather issues. Margi Worrest & Anna Van De Meulebroecke 26

Wine Club - June 19 Tour de France
The American Wine Society promotes the appreciation of wine through education. Our Heritage Hunt Chapter pursues this mission by sharing quality wines, and presenting vineyards, wineries and winemakers from around the world. Whether you’re new to wine or an experienced oenophile, you’ll be right at home at our wine-tasting events. We meet the third Monday of each month at the Clubhouse. Guests are always welcome. At our April 17 meeting, sixty-four members and guests enjoyed tasting and learning about the range of wines being produced in South America. Jason Wauer of Global Wines Virginia did a great job leading us through whites and reds being produced not only in Argentina and Chile, but also Brazil and Uruguay. There were some revelations indeed about the full range and quality of these wines. The HH HOA, via Up To Par, supported this event, and made the wines we tasted available for direct retail sale to attendees. Our May 15 meeting featured Delaplane Cellars presented by owners/operators/wine-makers Jim and Betsy Dolphin. We enjoyed Virginia single-vineyard wines that reflect the unique terroir of each of several vineyards. Their wines were excellent. This was an outstanding event. I’ll have additional details in next month’s Horn. Our June 19 event takes us on a Tour de France. Hugues Beaulieu will take us from Alsace to Bordeaux with stops in Burgundy, Provence, the Rhone Valley, Languedoc, Cahours, and Touraine. Mr. Beaulieu has an extensive wine-related background. Originally from Loire region of France, he was a sommelier at the Michelin three-star La Tour D’Argent in Paris and was the Beverage Director/Sommelier at the Inn at Little Washington. He’s a member of the International Sommelier Guild and Cavaleiro of the Confraria do Vinho do Porto. He brings knowledge, insight, and enthusiasm for the wine-maker’s craft. Come prepared to enjoy some excellent wine and discussion. The Great Oak Ballroom in the Clubhouse will open at 6:45pm on Monday June 19 with ‘social’ wines, lite fare, and the opportunity to greet old friends and meet new ones. The meeting will come to order at 7pm. Door prizes and our 50/50 raffle will conclude an enjoyable event. Reservations are required for members and their guests (and guests are always welcome). Registration closes noon Friday June 16. Attendees registered as of that time commit to pay the event fee. Register with Mary McFadden at mjmcfadden20155@gmail.com or 703-743-2455. Attendees can pay the event fee of $22/person at the door by cash or check. Visit us on Facebook at www. facebook. com/hhwineclub. Walt Grabowski The Heritage Horn • June 2017

Performing Arts Showcase John Hall Featured Soloist John Hall, featured soloist in Heritage Hunt’s Men in Song, was raised in Shelby County, Alabama. In school he was always good at math, and longed to teach math or science. Once given the opportunity to join the college preparatory track, John promptly rose to the top of his class. He then attended Alabama State Teachers College in Montgomery, where he worked in the dining hall and again rose to the top of the freshman class as a math major with a minor in science. He started singing in the college choir as well as at church. After graduating, he taught for two years back at his old high school, where he met his future wife, Pat. Her grandmother invited them to St. Louis, where John happened to see some former college friends playing basketball. They told him they made maps for the Air Force, which intrigued him. He applied to the Aeronautical Chart and Information Center and got the job the next day, starting a 30-year career that also included the US Geological Survey in Reston and the Defense Mapping Agency in Bethesda. Along the way he earned a Master’s degree in civil engineering from Purdue University. Living in Franklin Farms in Herndon, he often played golf with some former Washington Redskins (Charlie Taylor, Mark Mosley, and Jimmy Jones) at Heritage Hunt. One day his ball landed in the backyard of what is now his home since 2004! Soon after moving in, he attended a “Men in Song” practice and joined the group in January 2005. Although a strong bass (his first solo was “Old Man River”), John also has a highly versatile range. His favorite types of music are “barber shop” and “doo-wop.” He and Pat have three sons and ten grandchildren
Heritage Hunt Little Theater Spring Play: The Dixie Swim Club Heritage Hunt Little Theater enjoyed a busy and fulfilling month with the production of our 27th play, The Dixie Swim Club. Over 40 of our members were involved in every aspect of the production from set construction, lighting and sound (thanks to LSTV!), costumes, acting, decoration of the ballroom, ticket sales, and greeting. Though the play demanded a monumental commitment of time and work, we are energized by our love of theater and the laughter and appreciation of our audiences. We are so grateful to all of you, our Heritage Hunt neighbors, friends and family, who come to see our productions. Thank you all! The Heritage Horn • June 2017
In May we also pursued our goal of seeing other local theaters’ productions with an off-site excursion to Fauquier Community Theater’s latest offering The Secret Garden. An enjoyable afternoon was had by all. If you would like to learn more about Little Theater, its history, past productions, and newsletters, please take a look at our website at hhlittletheater.org. We meet the third Thursday of each month (except August and December) in the Mountain View Room. We welcome newcomers and visitors. Please contact Gene Schmiel (703-743-1305 or geneofva@gmail.com) for more information.

Dottie and Herb Legan will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on June 28, 2017. They married at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Bedford, Ohio, enjoyed a two week honeymoon in Miami Beach, Florida. They were born during the great depression and have vivid memories of the stark poverty of that era. Herb is a veteran of World War II, served in the Navy in the Pacific at Okinawa. After the war he returned to his studies at John Carroll University and law school at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. It was during this period that Dottie and Herb met. He was admitted to the Ohio State bar in 1949 and subsequently the District of Columbia bar. After practicing law for a short period and as a councilman in his hometown of Maple Heights, Ohio, he joined Travelers Insurance Company in Cleveland and subsequently transferred to headquarters in Hartford, Connecticut followed by Columbus, Ohio, and finally Washington, D.C. settling in idyllic Vienna, Virginia. At this point Dottie began her 13 year career with the CIA. After 43 years for Travelers and Citi Group Herb retired in 1992 and Dottie retired from the agency in 1994. They moved to Heritage Hunt in 2004. They now enjoy cruising, family visits with their four children and five grandchildren. Their four children are Lynn, who works with a home health agency in Connecticut, Karen who tutors in Virginia, Mark a screen writer in Hollywood, and Brian a professional artist and teacher in Virginia. Heritage Hunt Golf Leagues Give Golf Scholarship
At the May 10 Golf Committee meeting Heritage Hunt awarded Battlefield High School graduating senior Otto Voettiner IV with a $1000 scholarship check. The scholarship fund was established by various Heritage Hunt mens and womens golf leagues who enjoy the game, respect its traditions and wish to support a young player who is dedicated to the game of golf. Otto has been a member of the Battlefield Golf Team for the four years he attended the high school. Prior to that, he participated in competitive golf for eight years. His success at golf made it possible for him to be accepted as an Early Decision Freshman at the College of William and Mary this fall and he is committed to being a Division 1 college player. Otto also managed to maintain a 4.2 GPA and was actively involved in other school and community activities such as the Haymarket Food Pantry and the Salute Military Golf Association. His hard work and dedication are the qualities of a natural leader. We are proud to be able to support him and encourage him to make the most of his talents, both in golf and his other life pursuits. Congratulations Otto and a special thanks to the many that contributed to this scholarship fund. Joan Donnelly
