General Manager’s Message
Hello and let me be the first on the block to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. This has been a whirlwind of a year and it will be a busy last couple of months with community activities and holiday celebrations. I am completing my third year as your General Manager, and it seems like only yesterday when I first got to know all of you. I can’t thank you all enough for making this the best professional years of my career. On November 8th the Clubhouse will be transformed into our local polling place for one of the most controversial presidential elections in our lifetime. We are anticipating a high voter turnout so be sure to vote and be a take part of this important democratic process which makes our nation great. At the CMC offices in the Mansion and Clubhouse we hear a lot about what goes on in the community. Recently, we have been hearing that there are questions about what residents are paying on their Comcast bills for services not included in the “Triple Play Package” (which is included in your monthly assessment). I encourage you to go to the Community Services page on the website for information as to what is included in the Comcast package. If you have any questions about your individual bills, please feel to call them on any extra charge being billed for services you feel you are not getting or should be. With great enthusiasm, your Board of Directors and Advisory Committee for Strategic Planning entered in a consulting agreement with St. Mawes, LLC to do an in depth study of the community to establish a long range Master Plan. Such a plan will develop the information needed to adjust or upgrade our current level of facilities, amenities and services, along with a plan to provide for our future needs. This study is already in process and will continue throughout 2017. Please refer to the article on page 20 for more information. Winter is around the corner and with it will come our inevitable snows. In later issues we will address the specifics relating to snow removal and parking, but I wanted to alert everyone to one significant change. This season we will be doing primary roads first, as always, but when we get to the secondary streets, where most of you live, we will do the adjoining pipe stems and cul-de-sacs at the same time. This will avoid the need for coming back, and should speed up the process allowing those of you on the affected roads to get out quicker. Hopefully this answers a lot of the inquiries received and makes it a more efficient process. Your safety and comfort are our primary goals. Don’t forget to attend the Meet the Candidates Night on November 16 in the Mountain View Card Room and save December 6th on your calendar for the Annual Association Meeting in the Ballroom at 7:30 PM. This is a very important meeting and will give you a complete picture of your community accomplishments and goals. Yale Feldman, General Manager The Heritage Horn • November 2016

Board Briefs
November is upon us and the election cycle continues. The Board thanks all those residents who have stepped forward and put in their Declarations of Candidacy. Candidate Biographies will go out 11/11 along with the annual meeting notice. Residents will have time to review the various Candidates information before our Meet the Candidates night Wednesday 11/16. Immediately after that on 11/17, online/paper proxy voting will start and go until December 5th. Voting will also take place at the Annual meeting 12/6 for those who did not vote on line or by paper proxy. Election results will be posted on line and on HHTV 12/7, in the 12/9 E- Communicator and the January Horn. If for some reason there are still vacancies that need to be filled, residents can contact that Committee or Board after the Annual meeting, and express their interest. The Board did approve hiring a new contractor for the HH website and Point of Sale (POS) systems. The firm hired is Integrated Business Systems (IBS) and their contract will start 1/1/17. However, there will be a 2-3 month period when the new POS system will come in and staff trained to use it. Also, there will be a re- design of the website by HOA Lifestyle Director Mark Hillis working with community representatives. Interested residents can contact Mark now at mhillis@heritagehunt.net. After all this set up work is completed, the new website should launch in the second quarter of 2017(April- June) Prior to that, workshops will be offered to residents so everyone will be familiar with the new site before it goes live. The current contractors have agreed to month to month contracts during this time period so service will be continued. Board meetings in November are Monday 11/14 at 9:30 in the Marsh Mansion Parlor and TUESDAY 11/22 at 1 pm in the Mt. View Room to accommodate the Thanksgiving Holiday. The 2017 Budget will be reviewed and voted on at the 11/22 Board meeting. Resolutions that were presented at the 9/22 Board meeting are listed below. Please note that due to the Horn publishing dates, this information appears a full month after the meeting. Residents can always go to the website for full meeting minutes. Go to Committees, Board of Directors, Meeting Minutes. If you have questions, they can be directed to the Board, Community Managers and /or Committee Chairs. • Approved awarding the contract for Website Management Content and Point of Sale(POS)systems to Integrated Business Systems( IBS) starting 1/1/17 • Approved publishing revisions to Policy Resolution # 8 Use of Lots, Living Units and Common areas in the October Horn for resident comment. • Approved revisions to Policy Resolution # 4 Enforcement.

By Proxy (paper ballot) – Paper ballots and a proxy envelope are included in the official notice of the annual meeting. Please remove the corresponding pages of ballots from the booklet and cut the ballots apart. You should complete the ballot(s) and proxy envelope and enclose the ballots in the proxy envelope. Please be sure to sign and have a witness sign your proxy as this is required by the association documents. Anyone may witness your signature: a spouse, neighbor, friend, or management staff. Turn in your paper proxy by 5 PM, Monday, December 5, to the Clubhouse Front Desk staff or place it in one of three drop boxes (beside the Clubhouse Front Desk; on the lower level near the Food and Beverage Staff offices, or in the Marsh Mansion foyer). Paper proxy envelope/ballots are not accepted after this time nor at the meeting. Voting Questions and Answers What’s the difference between an instructed proxy and an uninstructed proxy? Your proxy is instructed if you mark the ballots and enclose them in the proxy envelope. Your proxy is uninstructed if you wish your proxy holder to obtain ballots on your behalf to cast votes at the meeting. Can I revoke my vote after voting online or after turning in my paper proxy? Your online ballot cannot be changed or revoked because the votes are recorded anonymously. If, after submitting your paper proxy, you decide to change your vote, you may obtain and complete a second proxy envelope and ballots (obtain from Mark Hillis in the Marsh Mansion HOA office); the most recent cancels the earlier proxy. If, after submitting your paper proxy, you decide to attend the meeting to vote in person, you may revoke your proxy at the time of registration and obtain ballots to vote at the meeting. When does the vote count take place and how is it made known to the community? Once it is determined that quorum has been achieved and the meeting is called to order, Heritage Hunt

It will also be published in the January 2017 issue of The Heritage Horn. Reserve Accounts
A little review, there are four Reserve accounts. Remember that each of these reserves are backed by investments in CD’s and Treasury Bills and Notes: 1. Repair & Replacement Reserve Covered in a prior article This reserve is for repairing or replacing our current property and equipment. The amount funded is based on a professional Reserve Engineering StudyPart of your HOA dues goes to funding this reserve; 2 Infrastructure Reserve Covered in a prior article. This reserve is for our roads and curbs. Part of your HOA dues goes to funding this reserve; 3. Major Projectors Reserve Covered in this article 4. Operating Fund (Reserve) Covered in this article. MAJOR IMPROVEMENT FUND (Non-Statutory) The Major Improvement Fund was established to create a funding source for investments that add to existing Community capital assets/amenities or to the creation of new capital assets/amenities. The Major Improvement Fund is not part of the Reserve Funds and new additions are generally not eligible for reserve funding until they have been acquired/ constructed and been included in a Reserve Study analysis. This fund is not a statutory requirement. Expenditures from this fund are subject to the provisions of Article 2.2 of the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions, Restrictions and Easements and thus may require a vote of the Association Members. In the event that this Article is applicable, the Board will set the date and time for the vote by the Membership. A. Major Improvement Fund is funded primarily through contributions from Resale Capital Contributions. Additional funding may be made through contributions from owners as part of the Annual Assessment. B. Major Improvement Fund assets are invested in accordance with Article 4, Section 4.7 of the Restated Declaration of Covenants, Conditions, Restrictions and Reservation of Easements, dated 13 March 2015. 8

Reserve Accounts (contd.)
C. Major Improvement Fund may be used for any legal purpose as determined at any time by action of the Board of Directors DEFINITIONS Addition – something not previously existing or added to another. New additions are generally not eligible for Reserve funding until they have been acquired/ constructed and have been included in a Reserve Study analysis. Capital Expenditures –A capital expenditure is any substantial discretionary addition to the Community Facilities and/or Common Areas, voluntary significant upgrade to Community Facilities and/or Common Areas, or discretionary material alterations to the appearance of the development. The definition of a “capital expenditure” is different for accounting/ audit purposes than for approval of same as set forth in the HOA governing documents. For HOA purposes, according to section 2.2 of the Declaration, only new assets/additional facilities added to existing facilities would be considered as capital improvements and be subject to the provisions of section 2.2 with regard to the approval process. OPERATING The Operating Fund was established to cover operating expenses that exceed the budget during the year as a result of unexpected circumstances. This fund is not a statutory requirement. A. Operating Fund is maintained through contributions from owners as part of the Annual Assessment. B. Operating Fund assets are invested in accordance with Article 4, Section 4.7 of the Restated Declaration of Covenants, Conditions, Restrictions and Reservation of Easements, dated 13 March 2015. C. It is the intention of the Board of Directors to follow prudent financial practices and maintain the Operating Fund at a level of 10% to 20% of annual assessments. Our annual audit reports have consistently stated— “As a general rule, we recommend associations maintain excess operating funds at a level of between 10% and 20% of annual assessments. This ensures that potential operating deficits do not consume funds designated for replacement reserves. We commend the Association for maintaining excess operating funds within the recommended range.” Barbara Marotta, Budget & Finance Committee Chair

What about when I know a word but can’t recall it? This is usually just a glitch in your memory. You’ll almost always remember the word with time. This may become more common as you age. It can be very frustrating, but it’s not usually serious. How can I tell if my memory problems are serious? A memory problem is serious when it affects your daily living. If you sometimes forget names, you’re probably okay. But you may have a more serious problem if you have trouble remembering how to do things you’ve done many times before, getting to a place you’ve been too often, or doing things that use steps, like following a recipe. For an in-depth discussion of memory loss as we age, what is normal and what is not and treatments available, join Laveena Khanchandani, Licensed Clinical Psychologist as she discusses the differences between memory problems that are natural with aging and cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Program is presented by Novant Health System. Joey Wagner, Community Relations Committee

Child Seat Safety
Are your children and grandchildren safe while in a vehicle? Child safety seats have changed dramatically over the years to improve child safety. However, they must be installed correctly and used correctly. Did you know that as many as 85% of child safety seats are defective or incorrectly installed? Is your family riding safe? Through education, training, enforcement, outreach and legislation the Prince William Community Safe Kids Coalition seeks to ensure that all children from birth to age 16 are properly restrained in the correct restraint system every time they travel in a motor vehicle. Child restraint devices must be properly used and meet standards adopted by the United States Department of Transportation. Prince William Community Safe Kids Coalition encourages everyone to have their child safety seats inspected. The Safe Kids Coalition sponsors community child safety seat inspections throughout the year. In addition, you can contact any local fire station to schedule an appointment to get a safety seat inspection; or call the Police Department at 703-792-7270. For additional information on child safety seats and the Child Safety Seat Program call 703-792-7736. For information on assistance programs for low-income residents who cannot afford a safety seat, contact the Virginia Department of Health Center for Injury and Violence Prevention at 1-800732-8333. Millions of animal owners, nation-wide, consider their pets to be important members of the household. The likelihood that you and your animals will survive an emergency such as weather emergency or terrorist attack depends largely on emergency planning done today. Whether you decide to stay put in an emergency or evacuate to a safer location, you will need to make plans in advance for your pets. Keep in mind that what’s best for you is typically what’s best for your animals. According to FEMA, planning for animal evacuation should include the following considerations: • If you must evacuate, take your pets with you if possible. However, if you are going to a public shelter, it is important to understand that animals may not be allowed inside. Plan in advance for shelter alternatives that will work for both you and your pets. • Go to the internet and locate several “petfriendly” hotels in and around your area. • Create a back-up emergency plan in case you can’t care for your animals yourself. Develop a buddy system with neighbors, friends and relatives to make sure that someone is available to care for or evacuate your pets if you are unable to do so. Be prepared to improvise and use what you have on hand to make it on your own for at least three days, maybe longer. • If there is a disaster pending, evacuate early with your pets. Don’t wait for a mandatory evacuation order. • Animals should have microchips or identification tags with their name as well as your address and cell phone number. Put together an animal emergency kit: • A seven supply of water and food (stored with a can opener for canned food) in a waterproof container. • Toys, treats and bedding because familiar items may reduce stress for your pet. • Medications, medical records and your veterinarian’s name and telephone number. • Current photos of you with your family pets. • Sturdy leashes, harnesses, and/or carriers to move pets safely and securely. • Litter, litter box, newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags and household chlorine bleach for sanitation. • First aid supplies such as cotton bandage rolls, tape, scissors, antibiotic ointment, flea/tick prevention, latex gloves, alcohol, saline solution as well as a pet first aid reference book.

Disaster Planning (contd.)
Planning for safe animal transportation: • Get family pets used to being placed in a carrier or crate. • Prepare to move birds, snakes, lizards, ferrets and “pocket pets” like hamsters and gerbils in secure cages or carriers; • Prepare for extreme weather conditions. Include blankets, ice packs, heating pads and a water mister in your kit. • Obtain “Pets Inside” stickers at www.ASPCA. org and place the stickers on doors or windows with the number and types of pets in your home (include a phone number where you can be reached). If time permits, remember to write “Evacuated with Pets” across the stickers if you flee with your pets. Remember, the best way to protect your household from the effects of a disaster is to have a disaster plan. If you are a pet owner, that plan must include your pets because being prepared can save their lives. Detailed plans for family pet owners are available online at www.Ready.Gov or by calling 1-800-BE READY (1-800-237-3239). Caryl Welsh, Emergency Preparedness Committee

In an effort to help promote the game of golf for future generations, and promote Heritage Hunt Golf and Country Club in our local community, a new Golf Scholarship Fund has been created! A committee of interested individuals has been coordinating efforts in preparation to award its first annual $1,000.00 scholarship to a local graduating high school senior in the spring of 2017. Scholarship applications have been distributed to local high school guidance counselors and are available from committee members on request. The committee would like to thank Up to Par and the Heritage Hunt HOA for making the first donation to the Scholarship Fund! Donations may be made by check to: HHGLSF (Heritage Hunt Golf Leagues Scholarship Fund). Donations may be made at the front desk at the clubhouse or mailed to: Heritage Hunt Golf Leagues Scholarship 6901 Arthur Hills Drive, Gainesville, VA 20155 Donations may also be given to any of the committee members (Margaret Dierdorff, Joan Donnelly, Bobbi Manley, Ric Perez, Avis Scherer). In addition to donations, the Golf Leagues Scholarship Fund committee would welcome new members who are interested in helping to promote the game of golf by assisting the next generation of golfers through this scholarship program. Please contact any of the current committee members if you have an interest in joining the committee! Margaret Dierdorff The Heritage Horn • November 2016

Front Gate Visitor Access Management
It has been a long time in coming and involved a lot of coordination with New Horizon Security Service, Gate Key and the Grounds Committee. We looked at a number of barcode systems to meet our needs. Several challenges had to be overcome. First and foremost, the system had to be readily adaptable into Gate Key without any major administrative changes or costs to Heritage Hunt. We did not want to scrap Gate Key, which would require residents to learn a new system and recreate their guest’s list. That would be a show-stopper. As it turned out, we were able to adapt the barcode pass system Gate Key now offers to meet our requirements, and at a very affordable acquisition and operating cost. The system features a high volume printer that produces a pass in about 2 seconds. The card stock pass is designed to withstand high temperatures so it can remain on your dash without turning black like most receipts printed on thermal paper do. This technology enables us to make these passes valid for one year. As more and more visitors receive their new pass, the Security Officer will be able to use a highspeed scanner to electronically record their entry and dramatically reduce visitor-processing time. Now you need to do your part. Make sure your guest list is up to date. Don’t call the Front Gate to make changes for you as there is only one person on duty during the day and they will more than likely not be able to access your account as quickly as you can during this implementation period. So please, DIY. If you don’t have internet capability, contact the Front Desk for help. We anticipate a smooth transition with few hiccups, if any, because of the flexibility of Gate Key’s barcode system. You should see shorter lines waiting to get through the Visitor Lane soon. Some garden ‘should-have done’ dates may have already slipped by. Before the really deep cold sets in (January) and freezes the earth, here are some things that you can do now to have a healthy, vigorous garden for spring 2017: Water: The ground takes way longer to cool off than the air. As long as the earth is not frozen, water your deciduous as well as broadleaf evergreen trees and bushes (rhodos, azaleas, magnolias, camellias, boxwood) and needled evergreens weekly to help reduce the stress of losing water through their leaves/ needles during the long winter. This schedule includes watering other newly installed plants which also need extra help to get them through the upcoming winter. Plants in general also need a final watering so their roots can continue to grow as long as the ground is not frozen (again, January). This does not apply to any plants that prefer it dry: i.e., lavender, lamb’s ears, yarrow, butterfly weed and bush, cat mint, coneflower, helleborus, liriope, periwinkle – to name a few. Bulbs: It is still not too late to plant your bulbs (I have 500 bulbs yet go in!)--just make sure you loosen all the surrounding ground well and do it before December --- adding a little bone meal to the earth--then water well. Frost Heaving: During a thaw, check your garden beds for plant heavings and replace (or add) soil around exposed roots. Keep a sack of potting or top soil on hand for these emergencies. Roses and others newly planted: Mound up mulch at the base. Totally remove this protection in early spring. You can also build a small cage around a new or tender bush, and fill it with leaves or wrap in burlap (for a short period of time) for added wind protection. Or spray the evergreen leaves with WILT PRUF, a long-lasting anti-desiccant. Garden Art: During the quiet of winter, look for a special sculpture, pot or object to put in your garden as a permanent focal point. The Thaw: In March, loosen the mulch in your garden beds and fluff it with a rake or hand claw so water can easily penetrate into the root zone. Pull back the piled-up mulch from your tender plants, Find Your Tools More Easily: Spray paint the handles of your garden tools and broom in a bold color to make it easier to spot in the garden. Snow: When it snows, buy sand or kitty litter in advance to put on your sidewalks (instead of salt or chemicals) to protect your lawn and plant roots. Nancy Burns, Grounds Committee & Certified Master Gardener

Recycle 101 - Think Before You Throw
Thursday, October 6, Eli Hayes and Laura McVey of American Disposal Services provided 27 Heritage Hunt residents with a very informative review of ADS’s many enhancements to its recycling operations. If you didn’t know, ADS is the largest family-owned and operated refuse and recycling removal service in Northern Virginia. There was a high level of interest in the presentation with much attention paid to a short video focused on its recently adapted single stream recycling system, which is enabling communities like Heritage Hunt to recycle more than ever before. Tours of their recycling plant in Manassas can be made available to all residents. It is a real eye-opener in becoming better informed as to how technology has impacted such a manual business. Whether you attended the meeting or not, contact either Kathy Vergano at kvergano@comcast.net or Joan Donnelly at brooklynjoan@comcast.net if you are interested in a tour. To enhance your background, a visit to their website www.americandisposal.com would be invaluable. In addition, you can view the presentation on the community website found on the Community Services page. The Green Neighborhood Group

Visitors will notice how a choice of paint can change the mood of a room. Santa’s elves at Heritage Hunt have been busy making goodies for the Sweets and Treats Shoppe, which will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., on the day of the tour. Stop by to pick up special treats for holiday gifts and celebrations. You will find homemade cookies, cakes, breads, jams, soups and other holiday treats. The Holiday Home tour is the largest fund raising activity for the HHWO, and all proceeds are distributed to local charities. Admission tickets are $14 and may be purchased at the November meeting of HHWO, from members of the tour committee, or in the clubhouse on the day of the tour from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Call Marilyn Giekes, Chairman (571-248-0171 if you have questions. Garden Club - Nov. 17 Workshop Event with Doug Burroughs Flower Gallery
The Garden Club at Heritage Hunt will hold our November 17th meeting at 10:15 a.m. at The Flower Gallery with Doug Burroughs, owner of the Flower Gallery, in Manassas. Doug will once again demonstrate 3 seasonal arrangements, one for Christmas/Holidays and two for Thanksgiving, participants will choose one of the Thanksgiving arrangements to make and take. Doug’s arrangements will be used as door prizes for attendees. Of the two Thanksgiving arrangements one will be a cornucopia and the other a floral centerpiece with a candle in the middle. The Flower Gallery will provide all supplies including containers. Participants need to bring a sharp knife for cutting (if it will cut a cucumber that’s sharp enough) and a can of food to donate for Serve, one of Doug’s favorite charities. The cost of the workshop is $ 30. Checks should be made out to the Flower Gallery. Space will be limited and due to that fact this meeting is for Garden Club Members only. All attendees will receive a 20% discount on purchases that day. Deadline to sign up is November 10th. We will carpool from the Marsh Mansion at 10 AM. Save the Date – Our Annual Christmas Potluck dinner celebration will be held December 12th , 5:30 PM at the Marsh Mansion. The Garden Club welcomes all residents to attend this joyful event. Bring your favorite holiday music, bring your good cheer! You can call or email Jocelyn Hamilton at 703743-1298 or jocelynh30@yahoo.com for additional information, carpooling and reservations. Wine Club Annual Meeting Board of Directors’ Election - Nov. 14 2016 Virginia Governor’s Case
The Heritage Hunt Chapter of the American Wine Society invites members and guests to explore quality wines, vineyards, wineries, and wine-makers. Our club is dedicated to wine education and the appreciation and enjoyment of wine from around the world. Our recent meetings have included two outstanding events. In September we featured Quattro Goomba’s winery in a tasting led by Fletcher Henderson, winemaker. Seventy-eight members and guests attended - an all-time Club high. The meeting was moved to the Ballroom to accommodate the crowd. In addition to Fletcher, the Club thanks Candace Moe who sponsored wines for the event. The centerpiece of our October meeting was Wine Jeopardy. The game was facilitated by wine educator, Al Guber of AWS. Our table teams became wineknowledge/tasting powerhouses that rose to the challenges that Al posed. This was a really fun event that tested our collective wine knowledge. Our thanks go to Al for a great job as question-creator, MC and wine selector. Upcoming is our Annual Meeting on November 14. This will be a great year-end finale. Our agenda will include the election of the 2017 Board of Directors, and a very special wine-tasting event. We will be enjoying wines selected from the 2016 Virginia Governor’s Case. Of 430 Virginia wines submitted to the Governor’s Cup competition for 2016, we will sample wines that were among the 12 judged to be the very best and selected for the Governor’s Case. These are delicious, high-quality wines that represent the best Virginia has to offer. Our guide to these wines will be Mike Wassenberg of the AWS. Mike is a certified AWS wine judge, a partner in a number of wineries, and a member of Knights of the Vine. He’ll be sharing his insights about our Virginia wines with us. This will be a truly special evening. Reservations for the November 14 meeting are required for Heritage Hunt AWS members. This is a members-only event - guests will not be admitted. Registration closes 12pm noon Friday November 11. To reserve your seat contact Emily Russell at omieljr@ aol.com or 703-743-1875. You can pay the event fee of $22/person at the door by cash or check. Please visit the HH Wine Club at www.facebook.com/ hhwineclub. You’ll find future scheduled events, summaries and photos of past events, and general information about vines, grapes and wines. What is Powerflex Yoga? When I began to teach the Men’s Powerflex Class at Heritage Hunt, almost five years ago, I learned that the class started as a stretch class, with stretch bands and a focus on standing poses. Now, during the Mon/Wed/Fri classes, 7:308:30 a.m., we use yoga mats, straps and supportive blocks to move from the floor, to standing and back to the floor, through alignment based, Hatha Yoga. Amongst the many poses in class, twists are all important in keeping our bodies moving and flexible as we move through our active lives. Twists are often taught as balms for sluggish digestion, low energy, stifled breathing, and a variety of muscle aches and pains. Best of all, they feel good from the inside out. Reclining Twist offers an opportunity to feel the power of wringing out the body from its core. It can improve breathing, ease back and neck tension, and soothe frazzled nerves. Its reclined position lets us linger in the posture’s curves and spirals, inviting the twist to penetrate deep into the spine. If you’re anything like me, this pose will leave you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and rinsed clean. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet comfortably on the floor. Take a few moments to make sure the back body is long. Invite the skin of the back body to spread and soften, settling with ease and relief into the earth. Grab hold of the back of the right thigh or the shin with your hands and draw the right knee toward your ribs. Rock gently from side to side to massage the lower back, and invite your exhalations to lengthen. Still drawing the right knee toward your chest, slowly straighten the left leg by reaching your foot toward the end of your mat. Ideally, the leg will end up fully outstretched. Roll onto your left side, bringing your right knee and both arms along with you as you turn. You should end up on your left side from ear to ankle, with your right hip stacked directly on top of your left and both arms resting on the floor to your left. A break in the heat by mid-September was welcome by all. Our hike to Leesylvania State Park went off as scheduled. The day started out foggy but cleared so we could enjoy the beautiful water views along the Potomac River. We were glad for minimal sun and the tree canopy as we hiked through Lee’s Woods since it was a humid day. A few hikers decided to relax by the water instead of completing the last section of the hike. After we all reconnected, we headed to Tim’s Rivershore, a favorite restaurant of boaters, along the Potomac River and had an enjoyable lunch along the water. Our hike to Burke Lake Park had to be rescheduled due to heavy rain on the originally planned date. We had a small group on a beautiful fall day. It was the perfect location to hike after a week of rain, as the trails were amazingly dry. We enjoyed lunch at one of the picnic pavilions before heading home. Scheduled hikes in November include trips to Great Falls on the Virginia side and Prince William Forest National Park. To be added to the HH Hiking Club email contact list please email mbworrest@gmail.com. This will keep you informed of when and where we plan to hike as well as cancellations due to weather issues. Cycling Club News
Who Likes Back/Neck Pain? In November our start time will be 9:00 AM. Fall finally came, but it struggled to get here with record high temperatures in late September. We continued to do our local rides but also took rides over Bull Mountain to Aldie for lunch at Brassicas and over to Stone Ridge for a break at Mug and Muffin. In late September, we carried our bikes out to the Plains. From there, we circled out to the west and north and came into Marshall. We took a quick break at the famous Red Truck Rural Bakery. If we had had a place to carry it, I think all of us would have bought a pie or some other scrumptious looking pastry. If you have never stopped at the Red Truck Bakery (There is one in Warrenton also.) you absolutely must put it on your to-do list. From Marshall we swung south, went through Belvoir, and came into The Plains for lunch at the Front Porch. The actor, Robert Duval, was at the table next to ours. We were polite and did not bother him for an autograph. September 24th, eleven cyclists participated in the fight against cancer walk, run, or bike event. October 5th, some cyclists rode from Vienna and others from Bon Aire Park to National Harbor for lunch at Elevation Burger and then back to their start points. In case you were wondering, no, we do not put our bikes away for winter. As long as the starting time temperature is approximately 30 degrees or higher and the streets are not too wet, we ride. The Cycling Club is meets every Monday – Friday at the Marsh Mansion, except on days we transport our bikes to start points outside of HH. On Tuesdays the Club has been conducting a leisurely ride lasting 60 minutes (plus or minus a minute or two) over mostly level terrain. The ride stops for a water break at approximately 30 minutes and at Subway at Merchants Square in Dominion Valley for coffee, tea, sodas, and chit chat before returning to HH. Persons not yet on the HH Cycling Club email list may get on the list by emailing Bob Shannon at trebor927@gmail.com. Being on the list will allow you to know when weather conditions are considered too severe to ride locally or when the club is going to take a ride with a starting point away from HH. Andy Johnson

15th Annual Heritage Charity Classic Continues Its Fight Against Cancer
The weather cooperated and folks turned out for our 15th Annual Cancer Walk. Most of the participants were from our community but there were some from surrounding areas and quite a few 1st timers. During the event people enjoyed walking through our community and got a chance to talk with neighbors and enjoy the scenery‌all for a good cause. After the event folks gathered around the clubhouse portico and enjoyed the snacks and coffee and checked the board to see if they won a prize. Over 180 people signed up and 170 actually walked or biked the course. Through the hard work of the committee and the generosity of our sponsors and walker/bikers we will donate over $9,800 to the Novant/UVA Cancer Center at Lake Manassas. Thanks to all who participated and the Photography Club for these great photos of the event..

Oh, oh! There’s skullduggery afoot! Murder most foul is on the minds of most of the cast of HHLT’s fall production, “The Book of Murder” by Ron Cowen on November 9th and 10th. All the characters have motive and opportunity. So you decide, “Who dunnit?” Four women (three exes and the current wife) receive a compelling invitation to meet at the mansion of the wealthy mystery writer husband. What does he want from them and what secrets will be revealed? You can’t miss this play. It’ll keep you guessing all evening long. Have any of the wives moved on? Do they still harbor resentments? Is the husband so bent on revenge that he invites mayhem into his home? The mystery will be solved by the clever detective who come to investigate the case, but not before you have a chance to draw your own conclusion. Listen carefully so you can decide who “did the
dastardly deed!” Remember there are only two performances. Tickets are available with the red reservation form or at the door for $10. Curtain up at 7:30 p.m. Joyce Mancini

Performing Arts Showcase Johnny Cash Tribute November 17 American singer-songwriter, guitarist, actor, and author John R. "Johnny" Cash is widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century and one of the best-selling music artists of all time — selling more than 90 million records worldwide. Although primarily remembered as a country music icon, his genre-spanning songs and sound embrace rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel. This crossover appeal won Cash the rare honor of multiple inductions in the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. His deep, calm bass-baritone voice, increasingly somber demeanor & trademark look earned Cash the nickname:
"The Man in Black".
Here's what Johnny's brother & sister say about HHC's November performer,
Terry Lee Goffee:
Tommy Cash said, “The show is great, my brother would be proud.” Joanne Cash Yates said “It’s a wonderful show, I would recommend it to anyone. You don’t impersonate my brother, you pay tribute with honor.”

Staying Connected With Community Happenings
42
There are several great resources for you to stay connected to what is happening in Heritage Hunt. Below we’ll talk about two of those resources and how you can trouble shoot some of the problems we have heard over the last couple of months. E-communicator (E-comm) is an email blast system the Association (HOA) uses every Friday to share the upcoming week’s events. It starts with HOA news such as Town Halls (Comcast), facility closures, maintenance news, committee events and meetings. As space allows we try to include club activities as requested by a chartered Heritage Hunt Club. From time to time you will see other e-comms for special announcements on a day other than Friday. In addition to the Ecomm we also have golf and food and beverage news presented each Wednesday called “HH Happenings.“ So how does one subscribe to receive these emails? For the E-comm you will want to visit the community website and navigate to the “HOA” webpage and scroll down to the “Community Communications” section. From there click on the “HERE” link by the E-communicator description. Fill out the requested fields and “Sign Up.” From time to time residents unsubscribe to receive the E-comm. By visiting the “HERE” link mentioned above one should be able to subscribe again. It is always helpful to put the “From” email address associated with the E-comm in your email address book. This will help prevent the E-comm from landing in your Junk, Trash or Spam box. For the “HH Happenings” you will want to contact Shaun Fronk at shaun. fronk@uptoparmanagement.com to register. Community Website is one of the primary ways to stay connected with Heritage Hunt wherever life takes you. The website address is www.HeritageHunt.net and each registered member of your household has their own user name and password. Please contact the Clubhouse Front Desk or any of the HOA staff if you do not know what your log in credential is. To log in you click on the “Member Login” button found on the upper right of the website Home Page. Once logged in you should see a “Welcome + your name” message. This is how you can tell you are logged in as yourself or someone else. As one visits various pages of the website, Mac/Apple users may get an error message saying, “Too many redirects...” thus preventing you from seeing more. To resolve this visit “Settings” then “Safari” and then “Clear History and Website Data.” This acts like a reset for Safari since it is concerned with you viewing numerous secure webpages after only one log in. A quick short cut Apple/Mac users can do to save a website to their homescreen on their iPad or iPhone is to click on the box with an upward arrow in it (shown at the top right of any website) and then “Add to Home Screen.” This creates an app-like button on your Home Screen so you don’t have to open Safari and type in a website address. Hopefully this helps and look for more tips and information about the many ways Heritage Hunt helps you stay connected. Mark Hillis, Lifestyle Director

Honoring America’s Finest
MARIA’S
571-278-9324 571-234-9464
44
Living around D.C. and the northern Virginia area affords us the opportunity to experience America’s young history through museums, battlefields and landmarks. Every week our family drives by one preserved landmark aptly called the “old house with a cannon ball in it.” Millons each year visit historical treasures to learn and imagine what life was like for those in that time. Others to pay their respect and honor for what the landmark represents. As a child I’ll never forget my dad taking me to see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cementary. Last year, I continued the tradition by taking my family to see and experience that somber way America honors its fallen heros. In a day in age where great admiration is given to superheros and professional athletes I appreciate what Mossy Oak once put out for Veteran’s Day, “Real hereos don’t have a name on the back of their jersey. They have their country’s flag on the arm of a uniform. Thank you for our freedom.” Teaching future generations to know not just facts about America’s history but to value and honor the the lives it took to get where we are is important. It was a special moment for our family to lay weathes down at the headstones of our brave hereos and later witness the exchange of guards. It gave me a chance to explain what and why we honor these total strangers. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy once said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” As we approach the holiday season may we pause and express our gratitude for those that have given their life in service of their country. May it also impress upon us to take steps to care for millions of veterans that are still with us. Permit me to offer a suggestion on how you can do this. Take your kids and grandkids to a national landmark such as Arlington National Cementary or even share a bit of your history. Let them see what it means to show high respect or esteem, in essence let them see you honor another. Mark Hillis, Lifestyle Director
