LATEST BREAST CANCER NEWS
Breast Cancer Awareness Month originated in the US in the late 1980s a time when open discussions of breast cancer were largely taboo and campaigners adopted the pink ribbon to promote mammography. October became the month to fundraise, campaign and raise awareness of breast cancer and in 1994 the first Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities took place in the UK. Its profile has risen year on year and allows breast cancer charities to work on different events and activities to raise awareness of their distinct functions and services.

Show your breasts some TLC: Touch, Look, Check
Breakthrough Breast Cancer established the UK’s first dedicated breast cancer research centre in London, in partnership with The Institute of Cancer Research, in 1999. Here world-class scientists carry out pioneering research into breast cancer, bringing together different research specialisms under one roof. This innovative, focused approach should result in scientific discoveries that bring direct benefits to cancer patients more quickly.
Last year, a Breakthrough survey found that although the vast majority of women consider themselves breast aware and check for breast lumps, many remain unaware of the full range of signs and symptoms to look out for (Breakthrough Breast Cancer ICM Research survey, 2007).
WITH THE HELP OF FUNDS RAISED BY OUR SUPPORTERS, BREAKTHROUGH SCIENTISTS HAVE: LAUNCHED THE MOST comprehensive investigation ever undertaken into the causes of breast cancer, in partnership with The Institute of Cancer Research. Involving 100,000 women and spanning 40 years, the Breakthrough Generations Study, will give us the information needed to help us find out how to prevent the disease in the future. www.breakthroughgenerations.org.uk LAUNCHED THE TRIPLE NEGATIVE TRIAL with Cancer Research UK - the first UK based clinical trail for women with ‘triple negative’ breast cancer that has spread to another part of the body. Triple negative tumours do not respond to hormone therapy or Herceptin so they are currently difficult to treat. This type of tumour is also more common in younger women and those of African ethnicity.
More detailed information on Breakthrough research work is available at www.breakthrough.org.uk/researchcentre/
LAUNCHED THE WORLD’S LARGEST CLINICAL TRIAL investigating whether acupuncture may help women with breast cancer cope with cancer-related fatigue, a major side-effect of breast cancer treatment. The ACU.FATIGUE study is the first in Breakthrough’s programme of high quality, scientific research into complementary therapies - an area where there is a real lack of information about effectiveness and safety. SET UP THE LARGEST EVER STUDY into the causes of male breast cancer with The Institute of Cancer Research. Around 300 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK, but little is known about why this happens. This five year study aims to find potentially preventable causes of breast cancer in men. SET UP THREE NEW BREAKTHROUGH BREAST CANCER RESEARCH UNITS in Edinburgh, London and Manchester. Each unit will complement work at the Breakthrough Research Centre. They will have strong links with a major cancer hospital and research institute or university, and will help Breakthrough achieve its goal of turning laboratory findings into benefits for cancer patients as quickly as possible.
That’s why Breakthrough Breast Cancer recommends all women show their breasts some TLC. This means:
“
Breakthrough is unique in that its supporters can visit the charity’s research centre. I find every visit inspiring - we meet many people with direct experience of breast cancer and it’s a poignant reminder that our work makes a difference.
Touch your breasts. Feel for anything unusual Look for changes. Be aware of their shape and texture Check anything unusual with your doctor. Chat with your

Breakthrough’s award- winning booklet: Breast Cancer Risk Factors: The Facts, helps people understand more about what may alter their chances of developing the disease. Visit www.breakthrough.org.uk/riskfactors
Being breast aware doesn't mean following a fancy routine for examining your breasts, it just means being familiar with how they look and feel so that you notice changes and can report anything unusual to your doctor. If cancer is diagnosed, prompt treatment offers the best chance of a successful outcome.
Breakthrough is also funding the most comprehensive investigation ever undertaken into the causes of breast cancer - The Breakthrough Generations Study, in partnership with the Institute of Cancer Research Visit www.breakthroughgenerations.org.uk
IT’S NOT ONLY LUMPS YOU NEED TO LOOK OUT FOR Although most women associate breast lumps with breast cancer, there are other, less well known signs to look out for, including:
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER? Breakthrough’s The Best Treatment Guidelines provides women with early breast cancer the information they need to be active partners in their care. It explains what treatments are available, how effective they can be and which may be best for them.
friends if you are worried.

Clare Isacke Deputy Director Breakthrough Research Centre
Size or shape - e.g. one breast might become larger or lower than the other. Changes in skin texture - such as puckering or dimpling of the skin. Appearance or direction of nipple - e.g. one nipple might become inverted (turned-in). Discharge - one or both nipples might discharge a blood-stained liquid.
One microscope plus computer imaging software will cost around £25,000.

WHAT CAUSES BREAST CANCER? Breast cancer is thought to be caused by a combination of our genes, lifestyle and environment, however very little is known about the exact causes.
Rash or crusting of the nipple or surrounding area. Lump in the breast or armpit. Lumpy area or unusual thickening of breast tissue that doesn't go away after your period.
The Guidelines combine research and recommendations from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) with the experience of women with breast cancer. These will be available to download from www.breakthrough.org.uk this October.
Pain in part of the breast or armpit that is unrelated to periods.
Remember, nine out of ten breast lumps are not cancerous.

“
I got my diagnosis of breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month - in fact, had it been at another time of year I don't think I would have reacted so quickly. The fact that I had been seeing breast awareness messages during October in magazines and newspapers meant that I noticed the lump and reported it to my doctor straight away.

BREAST CANCER RESEARCH
Campaigning for better breast cancer treatments and services for all
Breakthrough is fortunate enough to be supported by numerous high profile celebrities, who give their time for free to raise awareness of our work. The following supporters have offered to discuss their own experiences of breast cancer, why they are supporting Breakthrough and what Breast Cancer Awareness Month means to them, depending on their availability and the suitability of the request.
Breakthrough Breast Cancer campaigns to ensure that Government and NHS policies help people affected by breast cancer to get the best possible services and treatments wherever they live. This covers everything from how long it takes to be seen by a breast specialist and waiting times for tests and treatment, through to issues about information provision and access to expert support, advice and counselling. Breakthrough’s methods are diverse, ranging from parliamentary work and grass roots campaigning by members of the Breakthrough Campaigns and Advocacy Network (Breakthrough CAN), to forming partnerships with health professionals and other cancer charities. Our ongoing campaigns include: SCREENING SAVES LIVES Breast screening is vital to the early detection of breast cancer and Breakthrough’s Screening Saves Lives campaign aims to ensure that all eligible UK women have access to the best possible screening services. This campaign won the backing of Prime Minister Gordon Brown in September 2007, when he announced that the NHS Breast Screening Programme will be extended to women aged 47-73 by the end of 2012 (it is currently offered to women aged between 50-70).
LEFT IN THE DARK - ENSURING PEOPLE ONLY HAVE TO WAIT TWO WEEKS TO SEE A SPECIALIST Waiting for a breast cancer diagnosis is extremely distressing regardless of the outcome. In 2007, Breakthrough’s Left in the Dark campaign secured a Government commitment that by December 2009 everyone referred with breast problems will see a specialist within two weeks. The campaign continues to push the Government to keep its promise. BREAKTHROUGH CAMPAIGNS & ADVOCACY NETWORK Breakthrough CAN is a network of over 1,000 people and organisations who work with the charity to make an extraordinary difference to the lives of those affected by breast cancer by campaigning for improvements to their local breast cancer services. This October, Breakthrough CAN members will take their local breast cancer issues and concerns to MPs at Westminster as part of Breakthrough's flagship lobbying event, the Westminster Fly-In.
“For me, Breast Cancer Awareness Month brings into sharper focus reflections of family loss, together with a positive drive for further advancements that can only come from the much needed support and funds raised during this month.” Joseph Fiennes, Actor and Breakthrough Supporter
“
When I finished my treatment, I didn't think I could make a difference. Then last Breast Cancer Awareness Month I attended the Westminster Fly-In and I felt so empowered. I now know I can change the future for the better.

Jane Hughes with her sister Rachel Hughes, Breakthrough Supporters PROFESSOR ALAN ASHWORTH, DIRECTOR OF THE BREAKTHROUGH RESEARCH CENTRE Professor Alan Ashworth has over 20 years’ experience in studying the genes involved in breast cancer. His aim is to use this knowledge to design new treatments and to improve the effectiveness of existing therapies.
