Frequently Asked Questions What are the benefits of using Century polyurethane moulding and decorative accents over other materials such as wood, plaster or gypsum? Century products are engineered and manufactured to fit flush and square to wall and ceilings. Splintering, cracking, warping, rotting and finish sanding, common with wood moulding, are eliminated with Century products. The inherent characteristics of plaster and gypsum products, including heavy unmanageable weight and fragility, will routinely create multiple shipping and installation problems. This is simply not an issue with Century Architectural Specialties. While creating problem free installations, all Century products are water and heat resistant, impervious to insects, and will not rot, crack, shrink, splinter, or warp.
Perfect Joint™ is achieved through the Bi-Mold™ manufacturing process.
You mention Bi-Mold™, Perfect Joint™ and Computer-Matched Repeat™, what do these terms mean? All Century polyurethane length moulding and trim products are manufactured utilizing our Bi-Mold™ process. This unique and precise manufacturing method creates products with Perfect Joint™.This means that every piece of moulding will have the same width, depth, and length – matching piece to piece – exactly – every time.
3
The Computer-Matched Repeat manufacturing process creates a product that has “perfect repeat or pattern match” of each moulding length. This means each length of moulding is exactly the same; the repeat pattern ends exactly where the next length of moulding begins. Costly, labor-intensive pattern match cutting of mouldings is not an issue with Century products. Every length moulding will have an exact pattern repeat match from one piece to the next. This yields a swift professional installation with less product and labor costs.
What kinds of paints and finishes are recommended?
All Century products are factory-primed.
All Century products can be finished easily with any high quality latex or oil base paint. The possibilities are endless! For a luxurious appearance add a finish in gold, silver or copper leaf. Faux finish in marble, granite or gemstone surface – or try one of the new decorative finishes such as suede, leather, sponging or stippling. And for the truly ambitious – try decorative painting of individual elements as shown here. Dream décors await your imagination! Note: Lacquer based paints or finishes are not recommended
Where are your products manufactured? Century Architectural Specialties is an international company with manufacturing facilities located in the United States as well as other regions of the world. Our corporate offices are located in Marietta, GA, USA.
Some of your products are made of fiberglass, why is it beneficial to use fiberglass? Fiberglass has long been widely accepted and used in the automotive and boating industries for its impact resistant qualities and large product molding characteristics. Century fiberglass ceiling domes and wall niches carry the same impact resistant properties while simulating the look and texture of old world plaster. Fiberglass allows for domes and niches to be manufactured in a single molded piece. Each is factoryprimed and ready for finishing.
Are polyurethane products easy to finish and maintain even when installing outdoors? Absolutely! All Century architectural products are factory-primed and virtually maintenance free. We recommend that you finish using highquality paints that are specifically designed for your application. Unlike wood and plaster, Century products will not rot, crack, split or warp. They are water and heat resistant, impervious to insect infestation and odor free.
Are polyurethane and fiberglass architectural products easy to install? Complete and illustrated installation instructions are provided with every Century product. Some products are more difficult to install such as our ceiling domes and wall niches, where good carpentry skills are beneficial. Overall, Century products are easier to install than wood, plaster and gypsum products due to their weight and size, dimensional stability, precise tolerances and flexibility. For complete installation instructions ask your dealer or log on to our web site at www.architecturalspecialties.com.
Some basic information regarding all projects is needed. Planning and ordering information for every product group can be found on pages 48 to 50 of this catalog. Please read this section carefully. Additional information is available at your Century distributor or log on to our web site at www.architecturalspecialties.com.
Do Century products meet the applicable building codes? All Century products have undergone rigorous testing and meet or exceed all industry standards. For specifications and code compliance, visit our web site. All regional building codes and requirements should be reviewed prior to installation.

ften used as a “bracket” in archways, or on a wall supporting cornice moulding, corbels have moved to the kitchen and bathroom as decorative support elements under elegant countertops. This fresh update using corbels as a decorative furniture element has opened the door for a wide range of design possibilities. Interesting Fact: Corbel comes from the Latin
Majestic – CB 728
word “corvus,” meaning beaker shaped.

Decorative Mouldings All Length Decorative Moulding Due to the intricate detail of many of these products, we recommend that you finish [paint or faux finish] moulding before installation. After installation touch-up any area as needed. Crown & Cornice Moulding / Combination Moulding Measure your room to determine linear footage of moulding needed. Add 10% of total length for miter waste. Divide total linear feet by moulding lengths to determine total linear footage needed. For example: If moulding comes in 8-foot lengths, divide total linear feet by 8. Round up to the whole number of feet needed. This will determine the total number of moulding lengths you will need to purchase. Consider adding additional length to your purchase to “match the pattern” of moulding, ensuring a consistent appearance. For moulding with repeats, greater than 6” consider adding an additional 5% to total length needed. Chair Rail & Frieze Moulding Chair rail is typically installed 32" to 39" up from the floor. Frieze moulding is typically installed just below cornice moulding or adjacent to the ceiling like a border. Follow Crown and Cornice Moulding steps above to determine lengths needed.
Centreflex™ Radius Moulding Centreflex radius mouldings can be ordered in incremental lengths from 4 feet to 12 feet. When installing Centreflex moulding, it is important to establish a plan for the layout. First, determine which type of Centreflex moulding you will need. Select from: inside radius [concave], outside radius [convex], or arched radius. Next, measure your space Inside Outside to determine linear footage radius radius of moulding needed. (See (concave) (convex) Arched radius diagram below) To do this, use this formula: 2 x [height in inches] + [width in inches] = Determine application footage in inches [divided by 12] to determine linear footage required. Add 10% to total linear footage for miter cuts, then round up to the next whole foot increment. For example: 2 x [height] 12” Height = 24” + [width] 84” = 108” 108” divided by 12 = 9’. Add 10% = 9’ 9” Then round up to the next foot increment – 10. You will need to order 10 feet Width of Centreflex moulding. Determine your height and width If you cannot determine moulding requirements, Note: height = radius please provide the following information: Radius a. The width of the opening and the height at the center of the curve or a template. Diameter b. For all multiple Circumference and elliptical installations, customer must provide Determine your Radius, Diameter and Circumference Century with a template. When ordering moulding for a full circle application, use the following formula: Diameter x 3.14. a. For example: Your installation requires a custom decorative rim for a 6’ diameter dome 6’ x 3.14 = 18.84 linear feet. Round this up to 20 feet. Order two – 10-foot lengths with a 3’ radius [1/2 half of total circumference]. Formaflex™ Contour Moulding For use when application has a maximum radius of less than 12 times the fascia dimension.

Door & Window Moulding Start by measuring your door or window frame to determine linear footage of moulding needed. Add 10% to total length for miter waste. Divide total linear feet by moulding lengths. For example: if moulding comes in 8-foot lengths, divide total linear feet by 8. Round up the number of lengths needed to determine total number of moulding lengths you will need to purchase. You may also want to consider adding additional 5% length to your purchase to “match the pattern” of moulding, ensuring a consistent appearance.
All Decorative Ceiling Components Precautions When Installing With Electrical Fixture Or Ceiling Fan ALWAYS turn power off at breaker box prior to installation. DO NOT use the decorative ceiling component to support the weight of the lighting or ceiling fan fixture. DO NOT use the fixture or fan canopy to support the decorative ceiling component in any way. ALWAYS follow light fixture and/or ceiling fan manufacturer’s installation instructions for proper fixture support. ALWAYS consult with a licensed electrician or refer to local electrical codes to assure that the fixture installation meets code requirements.
Panel Moulding & Framing Corners When creating wall or ceiling panels, it is important to establish a plan for the layout of the panels and corners. Look at your overall room space and ask yourself. Where will the furniture and artwork be placed? Do you want full panels, split panels, do you want to add a chair rail? And, consider where doors and windows are placed. Determine what layout you wish to install. Suggestions are illustrated below. Start by planning your feature wall first, then the remaining walls [if applicable]. Note panels may consist of a single panel, variable sized panels, or symmetrically sized panels. Typical spacing: spacing should be consistent throughout room: a. between the panels, doors, full height split panels add chair rail windows and room corners a minimum 3-1/2" to 6". b. above and below chair rail lower only upper only ½" to 1" minimum. Horizontal panel layout plans c. above the baseboard and below ceiling or ceiling moulding 3-1/2" to 6" minimum. Measure all panel lengths and symmetrical, mixed symmetrical, mixed, 3 sizes add 10% to total for miter and joint waste. You may also want to consider adding additional length asymmetrical asymmetrical to your purchase to “match the Vertical panel layout plans pattern” of moulding, ensuring a consistent appearance. Pilasters, Plinths & Capitals Note that Century pilasters come in 6 foot 6+ inch lengths so you may need to trim pilaster. Always cut pilaster from the bottom. Always install the plinth [bottom] first, then the pilaster and the capital [top] last.
Decorative Ceiling Rims Your ceiling rim comes in four [4] pieces. Tip: When installing rim pieces to ceiling, grab some friends – this is a minimum of two and preferred three-person job! Ceiling Medallions Center holes are easily drilled or cut with a pen-knife to any dimension. Ceiling medallion installation instructions cover the following applications: Installation – Permanent Installation With A Light Fixture Or Ceiling Fan, Installation – Removable Medallion Installation With A Light Fixture Or Ceiling Fan [Allows easy removal of medallion to access electrical wiring with minimal ceiling damage] and Installation – Ceiling Medallion Installed Without A Light Fixture. Read all instructions before beginning installation.
Adhesives - IMPORTANT Century recommends the following adhesives for installation. It is extremely important that when applying adhesive, Century installation instructions are followed correctly. Using sufficient adhesive at each joint is important for a professional installation. PL® polyurethane premium construction adhesive crown & cornice moulding, chair rail & frieze moulding door & window surrounds wall niches & ceiling domes White Lightning® 3006 elastomeric adhesive panel moulding & frame corners ceiling medallions & decorative ceiling rims plinths, pilasters & capitals corbels, stair brackets, rosettes & decorative accessories
Corbels When installing corbels to cabinetry, be sure to measure the depth of counter overhang and order your corbels so they will either match the depth or be several inches less. Rosettes & Decorative Accessories No special instructions for Rosettes and Decorative Accessories are needed before ordering, but you may want to make a rough pattern of component size [see catalog page for sizes] and tape the pattern to the installation area. This will help you visually determine if the component will be in proportion to other room elements. Stair Brackets Be sure to specify LEFT or RIGHT stair brackets when you place your order. The photo below shows how to determine “left” and “right” stair brackets. An easy reminder: right brackets “point” to the right and left brackets “point” to the left. Right Left Be sure to measure the horizontal length of the stair – from stair edge to vertical rise to determine size of bracket needed. Century provides both small and large versions of each Determine bracket orientation – right or left stair bracket.
Complete illustrated installation instructions will be shipped with each order. Installation Instructions, Architectural Specifications, Material Specifications and MSDS’s are available from your Century distributor, the Century web site or by contacting Century at the address below.
