Location: Project Year:

Shoreditch, London 2022-2023

Masterplan/ Community/ Residential

Aerial View of the Goodsyard Estate

Against the background of the growing gentrification of London’s neighbourhood, the project challenges the orthodox master planning strategy that has contributed to the homogenisation of cities and displacement of local communities. Situated within the gentrified area of Shoreditch, the design interrogates the traditional terraced house typology by deliberately blurring the boundaries between architecture, urban structure,

and landscape. The project aims to redefine the roles of gardens, terraces, hedges, gabled walls, and facades, ultimately creating a new public-private gradient and urban scenery that embody diversity and inclusivity.

Part II Academic Works

With the current proposal of Bishopsgate Goodsyard in Spitalfields privatising public spaces and segregating communities by transforming the site into a corporate plaza of offices, high-end retail and luxury home studio spaces, the new proposal questions the conventional arrangement of dwellings in relation to the urban environment with the introduction of in-between spaces into the community.

In-between Goodsyard Estate Masterplan/ Community/ Residential

With the study of massing with physical models, the “banana” typology allows the front facade and gabled walls to open to all directions and thus maximises the views in all four housings. The triple aspects of the dwellings enable a 270-degree view of the greenspaces on the Goodsyard site. The vertical circulation, which can lead inhabitants to the rooftop spaces is placed at the exterior corners to allow more sunlight and views to the landscape.

The triple aspect and shared terraces of the quarterly-detached house allows for multiple views towards the landscape and the community.

Part II Academic Works

In-between Goodsyard Estate Masterplan/ Community/ Residential

In the project, the traditional terraced house typology is questioned with the concept of gardens, terraces, hedges, gabled walls, and facades blurred and redefined to foster more unexpected interactions between different groups of communities to produce a truly open and diverse community.

Local recreational facilities such as the skatepark becomes integral with the existing brick structure. Existing football pitches are also kept in catering for local needs.

Part II Academic Works

In-between Goodsyard Estate Masterplan/ Community/ Residential

Gabled walls are opened up as shared spaces by residents and “folded out” as communal courtyards; hedges become part of the urban scenery and spaces for interactions between community members; small independent businesses are integrated with the housing and the urban landscape in multiple ways to create vibrant street life and distinct urban character; meandering footpaths lead people to different pocket spaces in the multi-layered landscape.

Casting Redcar

Location: Project Year:

Redcar, North Yorkshire 2021-2022

Culture | Environmental | Institutional | Adpative Reuse

Aerial View of the Landscape Archive and Research Centre

In response to the demolition of the Redcar Steelworks Complex by 2022, the project envisages a landscape archive and research centre where Redcar’s industrial heritage will be celebrated and remediation of soilscapes will be carried out throughout a 50-year span. Sited in the unique slag landscape of South Gare, the design explores the idea of landscape casting and tiltup construction both as ways of revealing the industrial scars of the contaminated site and as an opportunity for phytoremediating the polluted landscapes.

The design explores the idea of tilt-up construction both as a way of celebrating the industrial slag landscape of the site and as an opportunity for phytoremediating the polluted soil, thus responding to Redcar’s paradox of preserving industrial heritage and developing a green economy.

This series of diagrams show how the concrete panel are gradually cast and tilted up to form the façade panels of the huts. The original casting plot will then become a testing phytoremediation plot.

STEEL OBELISK TILT-UP PANELS - The steel obelisk concrete is then casted on ground together with gutters and downpipes for rainwater collection before titling up. obelisk concrete panel facing the courtyard area is cast on ground and titled up as facade panel.

3. CONSTRUCTION OF REMAINING GLULAM - The remaning glulam structure is constructed before the tilting up of the remaining concrete panels.

4. OBELISK TILT-UP PANELS - The concrete obelisk panels are cast and tilted up on the two sides. The 5. FLEXIBLE TILT-UP PANELS - The concrete tilt-up panels is cast on ground and is integrated with the timber stud formwork of one of the panels leaves a gap of the thickness of the steel obelisk concrete, allowing pully system after tilting up, which becomes flexible to fold up and down. the concrete panels to be slotted in after the tilt-up process.

6. PHYTOREMEDIATION PLANTING AFTER TILT-UP - With all concrete panels tilted up as walls or facades, the cast soilscape will be phytoremediated where indigenous plants will be grown to remove contaminants in the soil. Gabion wall filled with slag forms the boundary of the existing casting plots.

Part II Academic Works With the site enjoying a rather constant wind from the southwest throughout the year, it is expected that roof and facade panels facing or orientating towards the southwest would likely have a higher rate of corrosion. Therefore, as time passes, the roofscape of the complex will gradually change from mostly pink and brown shades into brown for the northeast panels and patina for the southwest ones, to finally fully patinated.

The aim of the physical casting experiment is to simulate the real-life concrete casting process and test out the desired texture for the concrete panels. The test aims to create 1 to 50 landscape cast panels, thus providing a reference for my later rendering of the concrete panels in achieving the right scale and finishes that match real-life situations.

The Greenwich Archipelagos

Location: Project Year:

Greenwich, London 2018-2019

Heritage Preservation| Cultural | Institutional

Exploded Axonometric of the British Centre for Architecture

The project celebrates the rich layers of the Greenwich Heritage Site and recreates a new public space for Greenwich through a contemporary intervention of the classical Queen’s House by redefining its imagery and thus evolving into a master plan for the new British Centre for Architecture. The new extension, together with the newly intervened Queen’s House forms a layer of archipelagos under Greenwich Park. These

complex layers of site intervention not only serve as a backdrop of placemaking but become powerful and poetic event-changing spaces for the creation of multiple stories and a more organic relationship between the visitors and the existing Greenwich Park and the House.

“Hills”. For many picturesque paintings of Maritime Greenwich, the hills at the southeast were always one of the viewing angles that overlooks Greenwich Park, the Queen’s House and the River. Therefore, it is important to understand the relationship between the hills and the House if the importance of the House is to be manifested as the perception of it is shaped by people viewing at different heights from the hills.

“Grotto”. As Queen Henrietta Maria was fond of flowers, a garden was initially intended to build at the Queen’s House, and Inigo Jones actually would like to have a Grotto at the Queen’s Garden, but the plan was not realised in the end. This intention of creating a cavelike vibe informs the later stage of my extension strategy in trying to recreate that sort of atmosphere of serenity and a place for contemplation.

Part I Academic Work

The project did not follow the orthodox approach of doing historical preservation by mainly focusing on the building itself but tried to get a broader picture of the greater relationship between the building and the existing urban fabric and site history.

Xi’an Small Wild Goose Pagoda Roofscape Masterplan

The project is situated on a UNESCO Heritage Site in Xi’an, China, featuring a pagoda located within the heart of a historical park. The project aims to transform the nearby site into an open-air retail centre which blends with the surrounding neighbourhood and at the same time frames the historical pagoda. By understanding the principles in urban design and master planning, such as promoting diversity, enhancing walkability,

and permeability, and cultivating points of interest, I contributed to the design process by utilising physical and digital modeling, simulation tools, and conducting view studies through renderings.

I have assisted in designing the overall massing and how the eaves becomes a component for deconstructing the massing by paying close attention to the 1:1 dimensions of Chinese buildings, as well as the appropriate street width and plaza size. This was accomplished through both physical modeling. I have also assisted in formulating a control matrix of the overall masterplan in terms of the the different roofscapes, lanes, plazas, building scales, and building relationships with the pagoda.

This project is a resort/tourist-oriented project located in Jingzhou, China. Its aim is to connect the local culture with the site’s rich water history. This particular project significantly influenced my design methodology. It involved gathering various historical fragments of the location and establishing contemporary relationships with the business positioning and architectural languages in different zones of the project. I have assisted from site and

narrative research, develop building typologies, through digital modelling. I was also responsible for communicating with strategic planning, landscape design and rendering consultants which sharpen my communication skills and foster collaborative problem-solving abilities.
