Mixed-use Residential Winter 2024

The Aspen Residences aims to create much needed density within the city while maintaining housing quality and the harmonious Victorian streetscape. The Aspen Residences challenges the status quo of residential architecture in Toronto by treating the public right-of-way as a vital programmatic space, which the elevations thoughtfully and respectfully respond to. The brick podium serves as a solid foundation for the tower above, which delicately moves away from the podium, and features a stepped terrace design at its rear that creates unique outdoor gathering spaces for residents.

Institutional Fall 2023

Rhino 7, Adobe Suite, Escape, V-Ray

The McGill Library takes a unique stance on library design in the 21st century. This building acknowledges that the program of a library has been steadily changing. However, it also takes into consideration the aspects of library design which work from the past. The building allows for a large interior gathering space which serves as the Grand Hall. Additionally, the design takes hints from the Architectural Uprising movement which speaks on the benefits of elevation designs which step away from minimalism.

Oskenonton Edge

Mixed-use Residential Winter 2024

Rhino 7, Adobe Suite, Escape, V-Ray

The Allan Gardens neighbourhood features a range of housing types from free standing single family homes to 1920s walk-up apartments. Unfortunately, many of the existing built contexts would be illegal to construct under today’s zoning regulations. Oskenonton Edge is a missing middle laneway housing project aimed at attacking restrictive zoning regulations which hinder the potential of these unique urban spaces. Legalizing mixed-use, multi-unit developments as of right is absolutely essential in order to truly transform Toronto’s laneways into lively destinations rather than merely abysmal servicing areas.

Design-Build

September 2024

Rhino 7, Photoshop, Enscape, V-Ray

Contributions: Design development, testing of structural elements in the workshop, and on site installation.

The Department of Architectural Science’s Park(ing) Day installation was a design which reclaimed space on Gould Street for pedestrian use. The installation argued the expansion of the pedestrian zone, and for a street design which was meant to spend time in, not pass through. The design featured a long bench placed on two recycled plywood bases, and a curved backdrop which provided visual separation between the pedestrian and vehicular realms. Toronto’s valuable roadspace is being severely underutilized, Park(ing) Day attempts to express this issue to the public.

January 2024

Rhino 7, Photoshop

Contributions: Constructed structural test models, a final presentation model, and assisted in the final assembly.

Beneath the night sky, stars shine brightly. Among them, Nova has seemingly descended, coming to rest atop a lifeguard station. Nova celebrates TMU’s decade-long legacy of Winter Stations with its captivating design. This project integrates innovative elements, including 3D printing, a textile canopy, and a steel framework, to form a pavilion. The star-inspired structure serves as both a shelter and a beacon, encouraging visitors to engage with their surroundings, through panoramic views of the beach.

Toronto Botanical Gardens

Design-Build

June 2024

Rhino 7, Photoshop

Contributions: Design Team Co-Leader, designed and iterated structural systems, and constructed a scale presentation model.

The Toronto Botanical Gardens required an installation which would be simple, modular, and easily constructed. They wished for a design that allowed them to form spaces and provide their visitors with valuable information about their site and activities. The design solution utilized a point (column) and line (panel) system, which allowed for rotatable panels to be attached to stationary structural columns. This design system allows for staff at the TBG to place the panels in unique orientations and create spaces which visitors may occupy and learn in.
