SOURCES
Northforce have developed a code set, with which it is easy to find products from the range of hydration and recovery drinks that correspond to the customer’s own consumption. = product for strong fluid balance disorders = product for significant fluid balance disorders = product for normal fluid balance disorders
= product for endurance activities = product for speed and skills training = product for strength training
NOTE The terms used in the Northforce handbook are defined as follows: Athlete = an individual who trains at least five (5) times per week and has an objective in competitive sports Active fitness enthusiast = an individual who trains at least two (2) times a week, without a competitive sports objective Junior athlete = under 18-years-old, who trains at least four (4) times a week and has an objective in competitive sports
INTRODUCTION The need for nutritional supplements can be justified for elite athletes, when the amount of energy that is gained from food does not meet the nutrition deficit that is the result of physical activities. Fitness enthusiasts and other active individuals also have their own corresponding requirements when it concerns nutrition. Many engage in physical activities, from two to five times a week, but, due to busy work schedules or family life, are unable to take care of their own diets with regular meals (5-8 meals a day).
tritional expert. The principle is that the athlete’s basic diet should be checked first, as well as the energy that is provided. Many promising athletes, who are training correctly concerning their set objectives, pay too little attention to their nutrition and their recovery from their total exertions, thus, at the same time, denying themselves the possibility of progressing onwards towards their objective.
Similarly, they may neglect the nutrition that is necessary to recieve a sufficient supply of energy or to assist in the recovery process. Hydration is also important to take care of, before, during, and after physical activities.
24 h
The key to receiving suitable nutrition lies in the daily rhythm of the individuals. Junior athletes often train twice a day, alongside attendance at school or other studies. Their daily rhythm of life or the available dining facilities that are on offer do not usually support the possibility to receive adequate and timely nutrition.
1.1. The history of nutritional supplements
NOTE: All of the ingredients used in the Northforce products have been analyzed and tested.
Supplements have a lengthy history in sports. Nutritional supplements are often combined through sports drinks, primarily for endurance sports, but also as a product for strength sports enthusiasts (e.g., protein supplements). According to the current understanding, the need for nutritional supplements was created by the powerful strains that are present in all forms of sports and physical activities. A problem with nutritional supplements is their instability, as well as possible impurities with the raw materials connected to production safety levels. Studies have observed that a portion of the dietary supplements on the market have been found to contain small amounts of impurities that are physically harmful or contain substances that are prohibited in competitive sports. For this reason, many athletes have had to prepare their own recovery products and mix drinks to aid their hydration. Alternatively, some athletes have had to abstain completely from the use of nutritional supplements, to avoid any possible doping violations.
1.2. The determination of nutritional supplement needs The determination of the need for junior athletes to use nutritional supplements should be made together with the coach and / or a nu4 Northforce Oy • www.northforce.fi
Northforce protein preparations and other nutritional supplements are recommended for use, in so far as the energy requirements of the junior athlete are high. A junior (15-18 years) may also be currently experiencing a strong spurt of growth or an increase in muscle mass. Northforce’s high-quality nutritional supplements can take the place of several snacks during the day.
1.3. Challenges to athletes in the use of nutritional supplements The targeting of nutritional supplements to meet deficits caused by strenuous activities is difficult without expert knowledge and research. The lack of information poses challenges on the way towards successful athletic outcomes, since the physical demands of different activities varies so much.
NOTE: Northforce products do not contain any prohibited ingredients
In addition, the use of dietary supplements affects the rhythm of training and competing. Often, the same hydration and recovery products are used all year-round without any consideration about the body’s physiological needs during various types of training periods. Recovery products are often understood to be only used after exercise, even if the body’s energy balance often requires replenishment with recovery products before the actual activities. Hydration should also be carried out before participation in the activities, not just during or after the activity. 5

THE TOTAL STRAIN PLACED ON ATHLETES
An individual strain is the total sum of the strain during the day or week, or, in other words, the sum of all the strenuous factors that arise from the individual’s entire life. The daily strain is composed of various factors: school, work, social stress, psychological stress, heat, travelling, as well as the strain brought about by physical exercise and sports activities. The objective of balancing the total strain is to achieve a suitable relationship between physical activities, nutrition and rest. A successful balance allows for an increase in the fitness of the athlete and the development of their attributes towards improved performances.
• Adequate physical training will not, itself, ensure the development of an athlete • The significance of rest and nutrition is great
• As the strain increases, additional nutrition is required in the correct form, as well as expertise in the maintenance of hydration levels in challenging conditions
• For development to take place, a balance has to be found between training, nutrition and rest

The development of the performance levels of athletes and fitness enthusiasts takes place whilst SUPERKOMPENSAATIO at rest. Super compensation means that the body must be strained, after which, the body must be allowed to recover, so that the performance can then be increased to a new level. Rest and nutrition are key factors. 6 Northforce Oy • www.northforce.fi
The story of Northforce began in the wilderness of Kuusamo in Finnish Lapland. A specialist group of Finns launched a study and development project during the 2000s, upon the request of athletes, concerning the optimisation of hydration and recovery processes. During the product development stage, key matters came to be the product purity, effectiveness and the production, without preservatives and colouring agents. Applicable research and testing in endurance sports, skill sports and power sports was implemented as support for the product development. At the same time, university research projects were also started
3.1. Unique production facility in Kuusamo Northforce products are manufactured in Kuusamo, at Juustokaira Oy’s production facility. The production cooperation with Juustokaira is unique, since a manufacturing and packaging line has been built solely for the Northforce products, on which no other products are made or packed. The production department holds ISO 22000 certification, which ensures that the food production is modern and safe and of the highest quality, as well as guaranteeing reliable deliveries. High quality, ultra-filtered Arctic whey protein, is Finnish and its origin can be traced all the way back to the dairy farms. Arctic whey protein was chosen as the raw material for Northforce because of the strong health benefits of whey protein that have been proven in studies. The taste and colour come from real berries. No preservatives are used at all.
3.2. New generation, new innovation Northforce wanted to develop tailor-made precision products for athletes, the content of which is based on demands caused by the physical strenuous activities of athletes. The optimal composition of the products is the handiwork of sports medicine and physiology professionals. At the same time, active fitness enthusiasts were also given the opportunity to benefit from recovery and hydration drinks that are tailor-made for professionals. It is important that the Northforce products that are manufactured in Finland are pure and that the raw materials used are traceable, the product is effective and the development and manufacturing processes are based on professional know-how. 7
In rehydration, the cornerstone of Northforce’s innovation is a drink composition that is designed for the optimum hydration. A small amount of Arctic whey protein has been combined with a strong salty drink. This will assist in maintaining the body’s fluid balance in demanding conditions. In addition, Northforce has developed a precision product that is designed to assist important nerve recovery from skill sports. For the recovering process, Northforce has launched new tailor-made recovery drinks for three different types of strains. Muscle cell damage, the depletion of carbohydrate stocks or neuromuscular system fatigue are factors that hinder both athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike.

Northforce PHILOSOPHY BEFORE I
DURING I
AFTER
NorthForce’s philosophy is the answer to the control of the total strains experienced by athletes, fitness enthusiasts and junior athletes. The philosophy is based on the need for orientation before, during and after performances. For the body, vital substances, which are consumed during activities, in competitions and as stress reactions, must be “replenished” back into the body in the correct form. The proper nutrients, their mutual relationship, optimal hydration and absorption are key activities here. The aforementioned factors affect the recovery from strains, improvements in performances and developments as an athlete. Northforce’s philosophy provides a clear operational model of the required nutrition and hydration, before, during and after activities.
4.1. Before activities OBJECTIVE: To ensure adequate hydration and energy from the starting point. Replenish hydration and energy stocks. BENEFIT: To ensure adequate energy levels for the duration of the activities and allow the quickest possible recovery after the performance. When preparing for endurance type strains, it is important to ensure the energy level that will be required by the strenuous activities. The athletes should maintain the maximum glycogen stocks and have steady blood sugar levels, by following a daily diet which is high in carbohydrates. When embarking on physical activities or competitions, it is worthwhile possessing the optimal

or maximum energy stocks, but, preferably, with an empty stomach. Note should be taken concerning short endurance sports (2 to 15 minute long performances) that excessive glycogen stocks retain a great deal of water (1 g of glycogen binds 2.5 - 3 g of water). Since glycogen stocks are not limiting factors in short endurance sports, athletes should be able to optimize their muscle glycogen stores. This, in particular, relates to any activities in which the body is “flying ‘in the air, such as, running. REPLENISHING ENERGY STOCKS BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: Take 1/3, 20 min before the activity, of the (700 ml mixing bottle) ENDURANCErecovery drink.

Preparation for power sports and power activities
With power sports, the best results can be achieved by ingesting a proteincarbohydrate drink before the activity. On this basis, the exercise will result in an increase in the blood flow, whereupon the building blocks of the muscles, i.e. proteins, will be transported faster to the muscles and the recovery process will be improved.

Preparation for activities requiring skill, speed and power
Physical activities and competitions that require skill, power and strength also place a strain on the neuromuscular system. The ingestion of a recovery drink that has been tailor-made for the strain concerned will allow the nerve-muscular system to recover faster after the activity. The fibrous recovery drink has been designed so that the athlete will not gain weight during the competition season. 10 Northforce Oy • www.northforce.fi

EVEN SMALL DEFICITS IN HYDRATION LEVELS WEAKEN THE ABILITY TO PERFORM • oxygen transmittance 10-15% • thermal control • energy generation • cf. rapid weight loss, 2% of person weighing 70kg = about 0.8kg The fluid state and its dissolved electrolytes (or salts present in the blood and body tissues, Na, K, Ca, Cl, MG) determine the effectiveness of the functions. Sodium, or salt, forms, by far, the greatest portion of the electrolytes.
Fluid absorption before a physical activity is individual. The need for fluid depends on what kind of activity or strain is being prepared for. When preparing for long-endurance performances, fluid should be ingested in advance and no later than half an hour before the activity. In addition to normal drinking water, a Northforce rehydration drink may be used to ensure that the hydration balance is maintained during the physical activity, as well as afterwards. NORMAL FLUID REQUIREMENT • 2.5 to 3 l / day, including food and drink water

4.2. During activities OBJECTIVE: To maintain the fluid and energy balance, as well as the performance level itself. Recovery drinks cannot generally be taken during activities.
The stomach cannot often tolerate protein rich products during physical activities. Electrolytes are lost through sweat, which must be replaced during the activity, as well as afterwards. The amount of electrolytes that are lost during activities varies greatly depending on the individual, the rate and amount of sweating, which are, in turn, affected by the prevalent temperature and the level of the strain experienced. 0.5 to 2.5 litres of sweat is produced in one hour and 2- 2.9 grams of salt, in other words, sodium, is lost, along with the sweat. INGEST A SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF FLUIDS DURING ACTIVITIES • 2.5 L + strain-extra • 1.5- 2 x the amount of fluid lost • 1.5 - 2 dl / 15 min = 6 - 8 dl per hour during the duration of the strenuous activity • 2.5 - 4% sugar • 3-5 g of extra- sodium, in so far as the training or competitive activity lasts for more than 45 minutes • regularly throughout the day / training NOTE! : The normal outflow of fluid from the bladder is about 1 litre per hour.

Northforce hydration drinks efficiently correct various degrees of fluid balance disorders. The products have been designed to respond to different degrees of fluid balance disorders, from normal to heavy sweating. Studies by Northforce indicate that water alone is not enough to provide sufficient hydration during sports activities, in so far as the desired objective is optimal recovery.
4.2.1 Normal sweating
The Universal- hydration drink has been designed to prevent mild fluid balance disorders. Essential micronutrients take care of the fluid and electrolyte balance during and after the sports activities. Universal is suitable for all sports.
When the physical strain is not heavy and the sweating that takes place during the activity, as well as its resultant loss of salts, is low or normal, a sufficient drink mix is water, a little sugar, i.e. carbohydrates, and a small amount of salt.

4.2.2 Heavy sweating For sports activities in which sweating is normal, such as ball games or gym training. Contains a little extra carbohydrates and salt, with an addition of protein. The Tournament- hydration drink is designed, in particular, for matches, tournaments and competitive events that require power, as well as strength, speed and interval type en-
durance activities. The drink helps to maintain performance levels, prevents muscle cramps and accelerates the repairing of fluid balance disorders. Tournament contains a small amount of protein, an optimal amount of carbohydrates for ingestions purposes and essential electrolytes to assist the fluid balance level.
When sweating greatly, the ingestion of only pure water will lower the sodium level of the blood, which may result in cramps, sports injuries, the loss of consciousness, arrhythmias or even death. Strenuous activities in the mountains and at high altitudes, a marathon, triathlon, ultra-tours, cycling, football in the heat will increase the aforementioned risks. Whilst at mass events, it has been recommended to drink up to 6-7 litres of water. This is excessive and can result in water intoxication.
4.2.3 Very heavy sweating In so far as the question relates to an athlete sweating heavily, a long lasting strenuous activity or in warm conditions, a humid or thin climate, the sweat will be accompanied by the loss of a great deal of water and salt. At that time, the significance of hydration will increase.

The Extreme- hydration drink has been designed to prevent significant fluid and salt balance disorders. The product has been proven to have a powerful impact in thin, moist and hot climates. The drink assists in the maintenance of performance levels and corrects disorders in fluid balances that are caused by severe sweating. Suitable for all sports activities, in which heavy sweat-
ing takes place and, in particular, for individuals with a tendency to suffer from cramps during or after activities. Northforce carry out continuous studies to promote product developments. For example, in ball sports, we have measured that a 95kg player may even drop 5kg in weight during a game. The drop is dramatic and even a drop of a couple of kg, together with the loss of salts, will decrease the performance level oxygen uptake ability by 1020% and the reaction capacity and speed by 5-10%
ENDURANCE 4.3.1
Recovery from endurance type exertion
The Endurance- recovery drink includes essential nutrients for long-lasting training or competition activities. The drink increases the effectiveness of the replenishment of energy stocks before the strains, maintains energy and mineral balance levels during the strenuous periods and accelerates the recovery process. The product is preservative-free and the source of antioxidants is actual berry powder.
Generally, during endurance sport activities, carbohydrates are primarily consumed, as well as certain nutrients. Endurance training increases mainly leucine oxidation in muscles. This is because training increases the metabolism of the branched-chain amino acids.

4.3.2 Recovery from strength activities Muscle growth can take place when the protein synthesis of the muscles is greater than their decomposition. The development of power through power activities requires high quality proteins and other nutrients to assist the recovery process (the daily reformation of tissue structures and possible muscle growth, if the power activity is a ‘so-called’ hypertrophy exercise). According to studies, the ingestion of essential amino acids immediately after power activities increases the anabolic state of the muscles. The best combination has been found concerning total recovery, to add carbohydrate to the recovery
drink with essential amino acids. This will ensure the formation of structures, as well as the replenishment of the energy stock. The Strength- recovery drink is rich in Arctic high-quality whey protein and nutrients that enhance the recovery and repair of muscles and other tissues that have been placed under strains, particularly in connection with power and strength training exercises. The product is preservative-free and the source of antioxidants is genuine berry powder.
4.3.3 Recovery from skill and power activities
activities and competitions involving skill, power and strength. The product is intended for the maintenance and recovery of neuromuscular system functions. It is suitable for almost all sports, in particular, as a competitive season recovery drink, since it has not been proven to cause any unnecessary weight gain. The product is preservative-free and the source of antioxidants is actual berry powder.
Skill, speed and power activities are often neurological, in which the brain and nerves come under strain. The dietary supplement should then meet this need. The Speed & Skill-recovery drink contains nutritional nutrients that are essential for

Northforce studies
Through studies, Northforce Oy has received scientific evidence of the benefits of its hydration drinks. The objective of the study projects has been to find out what is the correct composition of the hydration drinks, to obtain the optimal performances. The studies have taken place at the Jyväskylä University Department of Biology of Physical Activity and the Sportpolis Science and Business Park of Sport at Vierumäki. “Water is not enough to hydrate an athlete”
During hard or long-lasting sporting activities, the body will lose fluids and salts through heavy sweating. As a result, speed and durability, as well as the intake of oxygen and reaction abilities will decline significantly. Studies show that ingestion of a Northforce hydration drink will effectively maintain the fluid balance level better than pure water or traditional sports drinks. Ingestion of a Northforce drink in connection with a hard activity reduces the body’s inflammatory response and subsequent risks of illness. Coach Ismo Hämäläinen, who has been involved in the studies by Northforce Oy, stresses the significance of the correct hydration. “The basic premise has previously been that water is an adequate drink for athletic performances. Studies now indicate that pure water is just not good enough during sports activities, and carbohydrates, other salts and minerals are needed as well. In this way, the athlete’s performance can be optimized, ”explains the experienced endurance sports coach. According to Ismo Hämäläinen, positive experiences have been gained concerning the use of protein supplements in sports drinks, especially in the hydration of athletes in challenging conditions, although matters should still be studied further.
weight of urine. In this case, the fluid balance and performance ability are maintained for longer than with the ingestion of traditional sports drinks or pure water. The effect of carbohydrates on inflammatory responses
The second phase of the study focused on the benefits of carbohydrates, comparing these with the ingestion of just pure water for hard physical activities. The study groups at the Jyväskylä University Department of Biology of Physical Activity 1) and the Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences 2) compared the effect of pure water, Universal and Extreme hydration drinks for duration activities. The study of strenuous activities at Jyväskylä University Department of Biology of Physical Activity led to a significant increase in the level of, among others, the number of white blood cells, which indicates an inflammatory response within the body. According to the results, the carbohydrate rich Northforce Universal – hydration drink reduces inflammatory responses that take place during hard duration activities. As a result, for example, an athlete and fitness enthusiast may be able to avoid periods of the flu following heavy strenuous activities (Such as competitions or heavy training events). Protein supplements maintain a constant hydration level
In 2010, the first phase of the study was completed at Vierumäki, which studied the effect of the ingestion of a Northforce drink on the fluid balance and performances in long-duration runs. The results showed that for the test subjects ingesting the Northforce Extreme hydration drink, their fatigue index was less than during other times, and their times to complete a run of ten kilometres improved significantly. The Northforce extreme- hydration drink, containing sufficient salt and other minerals and proteins, effectively binds fluids to the blood and decreases the specific
