Generated construction documents from previously approved conceptual design package. Worked with inhouse structural engineer to produce structural drawings. Project was located on a tight site behind an existing commercial building. There was adequate parking with the three private garages of the six units. One unit was designed to be ADA adaptable. (Taught myself ArchiCAD within a month to functional level.)

Daily Grill - LAX, renovated an under developed hotel restaurant, installed a brand name restaurant servicing patrons and room service. There were many structural and permitting hurdles to clear before drawings were completed and finally permitted. Such as concrete shear wall locations, egress vs. shared egress, and parking restrictions based on square footage. The renovation required nonstructural storefront adjustments to install new entry and patio doors. The existing cook line was removed and an exhibition kitchen was installed dividing the hotel and the restaurant kitchens.

-Phase 1 - Life Safety Upgrade, coordinatng plumbing consultant and architectural finishes. Exposed piping above a perferated metal panel ceiling created an experience reminiscent of the lower decks of a ship. Lighting levels and wall finishes were also upgraded. -Phase 2 - Two-story buildover of an existing four-story dormitory building. Cadets were able to reside in the existing building during construction of the new floors above and a new core with accessible elevator. This was achieved by scheduling the heaviest construction during school breaks. The Academy also wanted to advance its renewable technologies for economical and student benefit. An 80KW photovoltaic array was installed covering most of the new roof, which compliments their existing 660 KW wind turbine.

Phase 1 included the elevator, entry, grand stair, main lobby and upper level lounges. Phase 2 , 3, 4 and 5 reprogramed underused parts of the dorm building’s half basement creating more lounge space for students, while also including a handful of ADA adaptable dorm rooms.
mrainville1.618@gmail.com
Project involved coordinating various mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades. The architectural design consisted of a new entry vestibule with grand stair and the addition of an elevator within an existing stairwell. The budget and schedule were very tight due to the short summer break. Also there was an accessibility threshold; whereby, if the budget surpassed that threshold every non-compliant element of the building would have to be addressed. The total cost required phasing for future work, in order to remain below the threshold.

Studio 5: Theater Project Northeastern University Boston, MA
Our site was the last undeveloped lot in Central Square, Cambridge, MA. Within the 75 foot by 125 foot site, our program was to include a restaurant, an entry lobby, intermission areas, indoor and outdoor theaters with control booths, rehearsal spaces, practice spaces, a loading dock, private circulation for performers, some parking and storage. The restaurant is located at ground level on the main street, Massachusetts Avenue, to allow patronage as an independent entity. The main entry is set back from the property line with the intermission lobby overhanging. The main circulation core rises behind the glass box of the intermission lobby, covered in patinaed copper, a material found on roofs and ornamentation in the area. The main stage area designed to be a split stage servicing both the indoor and outdoor theaters. The outdoor theater had a structurally integrated glazing and sunshade system.

The class was charged with designing a Sports Pavilion in the Fens, a park in Boston, MA. The pavilion’s program included a snack bar, seating, equipment storage and restrooms. The repeated steel structural member (details at left) would start from a footing, slip up through the floor, support the bar, interact with angular supports and support a glazed facade. The glazing closed and locked when not in use; when in use, the glazing opened creating covered outdoor seating. The front and rear glazed panels are raised and lowered by a central winch system. The two private areas, bathrooms and the sports storage/ snack bar were wrapped in sheet steel bookending the central seating/viewing area.

Created a detailed scale model for light studies. The model is Renzo Piano’s De Menil Foundation Collection in Houston, Texas. Recreating the leaf-like louvers afixed to a triangular structural truss proved difficult. The actual louvers are constructed of ferrous concrete, a material out of my reach. Therefore, many experiments went into discovering other ways of creating such thin and sculpted light reflective louvers. The final construction used a spine with laser cut ribs, wrapped in vellum and spray painted white. Also the triangluar truss system was laser cut in order to acheive such slender elements.

Structurally the core (black) is the backbone of the building. Each office floor (light blue) is supported angularly back to the core as well as from the floor above. The housing block (yellow) is the “backpack cantilevered off the core. Both office and housing are serviced by this main circulation core via separate lobbies and elevator banks. The office lobby is located on the ground floor with the more private housing lobby at the mezzanine. Located along Custom House Street was the restaurant and retail face of the building.

Sited off the new Rose Kennedy Greenway, near Rowes Wharf in Boston, MA. There was an existing historic building on the site with a road that divided the site into two plots. Using similar materials and style of the existing building, created an addition for ground floor retail with gallery space above. By elevating the housing block a visual link is opened to the Greenway and a pedestrian plaza was created.

Stained Glass Project Continuing Education Cambridge, MA
Starting this project came from the idea of using some sort of mathmatic series for a source of order. I chose the Fibonacci Sequence, and through many iterations came to my initial sketch below. From there created various color studies and looked into textured glass. Having brought the color studies to the stained glass store, allowed the owner to best service my color choices and textural thoughts.

While studying abroad, I took on a full set of classes including architecture studio, black and white photography, serigraphy and environmental design. The silk screen print (serigraph) was created from black and white photos printed on litho film to create the screens. The black and white prints were taken on a 35mm camera using a convex mirror to reflect what is behind the camera in a wide angle format.
