Surrogacy has gone global. Recent statistics show that 1 in 10 couples are experiencing trouble conceiving a child and are turning to Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) for help. It’s estimated last year that 6,000 babies were born worldwide via “commercial surrogacy tourism”!
There are many factors that come into play when deciding to use ART to have a baby. Most of which are deeply personal, sometimes difficult and costly. So for many, the thought of going to a destination with all the latest technology and low costs that also has blue sky, sandy beaches and warm water, can be the difference in the clinic they select.
Another major factor to consider is stress. Evidence is mounting that stress reduction for a couple significantly increases the chance of a conception. That means a relaxing vacation, far from the pressures of day-to-day work and family responsibilities, may increase the chances of a successful IVF procedure and a beautiful new baby nine months later.
The top international fertility clinics offer soothing surroundings, often in resort destinations, that give patients a welcome contrast to the coldly clinical approach experienced in North American centers.
According to IVF Vacation Center president Mark Semple, “People tend to choose a destination for IVF for four reasons: price, quality, proximity, and the destination itself. The order of importance differs for everyone.” Many medical “destinations” are taking advantage of the struggles other countries are facing by building state of the art clinics, investing in the latest technology and recruiting experienced doctors and nurses.
“Quality is certainly not an issue when looking abroad, says Semple. Clinics in Mexico, Panama and Barbados are leading the way while at the same time promoting the beautiful local and resort vacation aspect. Cancun is quickly becoming a go-to IVF destination for woman in the US because of its proximity, low cost and beautiful scenery.
For about half of the cost someone in the US would spend, you get treatment in a premier private hospital and enjoy a premier resort. According to The International Medical Travel Journal (IMTJ), a recent on-line poll of 339 infertile patients finds: ď ś 76% stated they would be willing to seek fertility treatment outside their home country ď ś 70% citing their reasons would be to avoid higher costs and long waiting lists.
