Mary Mac’s Place holds Christmas lunch celebration Mary Mac’s Place celebrated Christmas with over 180 people attending its lunchtime Christmas celebration on Friday, December 20. “Many residents from the Peninsula and further afield enjoyed a wonderful Christmas lunch of ham, turkey, chicken, salads and all the usual Christmas trimmings,” said Mary Mac’s Place project officer Ms Christine Burge. “Santa Claus attended the lunch and all children left with a gift, due to generous donations of toys from members of our community. “The atmosphere at the celebration was very warm and relaxed with volunteers and our companions all enjoying the day.

“We are fortunate to live in such a generous community with so many individuals and groups thinking of others at this time of the year. “Donations for this year’s Christmas celebration came from all areas of our community. “Many individuals dropped off hams and dry goods for hampers after they had done their shopping,” said Ms Burge. Members of the Mongols Motor Cycle Club delivered desserts for the luncheon and wished those attending a Merry Christmas. The members of the club said that coming to Mary Mac’s Place was a reality check for those becoming complacent with their lives and the day-to-day things so many take for granted.

On Tuesday, December 24, Mary Mac’s distributed hampers to those who attended for lunch. “In another example of our community thinking of others, children from the Avoca Beach Art Markets distributed sweets they had made to all those who attended,” said Ms Burge. Mary Mac’s Place is located at 100 Blackwall Rd, Woy Woy, and is an initiative of the St John the Baptist Parish at Woy Woy and supported by CatholicCare and local businesses, clubs and individuals. Eight people rescued on the water Eight people were able to return home safely thanks to the help provided by the volunteers from Marine Rescue Central Coast on Sunday, December 22. The volunteers responded to a call for help at around 10am from a five metre Halverson ski boat with an electrical fault in Waterfall Bay with four people on board. Marine Rescue skipper Roger

Palmer and his crew on rescue boat Central Coast 21 provided a battery to enable a jump-start but this proved unsuccessful, so the disabled vessel was towed to the ramp at Lions Park, Woy Woy. The Radio Room at Point Clare Base received a call at around 2pm from a 4.85m half-cabin runabout with a mechanical problem near The Rip Bridge. There were four people on board and the owner sought

assistance to return to the boat ramp in Erina Creek. Marine Rescue skipper Bob White and his crew on rescue boat Central Coast 21 towed the vessel to Caroline Bay where it was passed on to the smaller Central Coast 12 to complete the tow under the Punt Bridge and the shallow waters in Erina Creek. A wetter start and a drier finish The Peninsula had 5.1 per cent more rainfall last year than average. The total for 2013 was 1391.6mm, compared to the annual average of 1324.4mm, according to figures supplied by Mr Jim Morrison of Woy Woy. As usual, it was wetter in the first half of the year than the second half. However, last year’s rainfall followed a similar trend to 2012, with an even wetter start to the year and a drier finish than usual. The rainfall for December ran with this trend, with just 20.8mm recorded – 16.6 per cent of the average for the month of 104.2mm. Rainfall in the second half of the year was well below average, with just 336.3mm recorded from July to December, the majority of which fell in November. This was two thirds (67.0 per cent) of the average figure for

total being just 31.6 per cent of the average total of 409.9mm for those months. Conversely, a total of 1055.3mm was recorded in the first half of the year, 28.3 per cent above the average total of 822.8mm for the first six months.

Labor MLC for the Central Coast Mr Greg Donnelly said more challenging times were ahead for the Coast following the release of state treasurer Mr Mike

Baird’s mid-year review. “Barry O’Farrell inherited an unemployment rate of 5%,” Mr Donnelly said. “Today it is 5.9% and the treasurer is telling us it will reach 6.25%. “Another 20,000 people will be out of work next year and the government is doing nothing about it. “You have to worry what that means for the Coast, especially with the invisible representation of Mike Gallacher.” Mr Gallacher was approached for comment by the Wyong Regional

Chronicle and said he was announced as Minister for the Central Coast while overseas on leave. It is understood Mr Gallacher returned from leave on Monday, December 16. He was officially sworn in as minister for the Central Coast on Wednesday, December 18. Mr Gallacher said the closure of Kellogg’s on the Central Coast was devastating news, particularly so close to the holiday period. “While this has been a difficult commercial

decision for the company, my sympathies are with the affected employees and their families,” Mr Gallacher said. “I am advised that Kellogg’s will be mapping skills at the plant with a view to placing as many staff as possible at their Sydney facility. “I also understand that the company has confirmed all employee entitlements will be paid, including redundancy pay outs of up to 52 weeks, eligibility for productivity bonuses and support to help affected workers find new jobs. “The NSW government is working closely with the company to provide support and to monitor the situation.” Mr Gallacher also said the announcement followed Kellogg’s statement last month that it would be cutting 7% of its global workforce as part of a major restructuring program. Kellogg’s has also recently announced the closure of a Canadian plant which will result in the loss of 500 jobs. Promotion raises awareness The Garden Organics day held on Sunday, December 15, at Woy Woy tip received a good response, according to Gosford Council’s waste operations coordinator Mr Colin Stalker. In celebration of National Recycling Week, Gosford Council and landfill partner Australian Native Landscapes ran the promotion to encourage residents to appropriately dispose of their green garden waste. The promotion offered eligible residents two free bags of Australian Native Landscapes compost or mulch for disposing of their garden waste appropriately at either Woy Woy Landfill or Kincumber Transfer Station on Sunday, December 15. Mr Stalker said the promotion aimed to raise awareness and provide incentive for residents to appropriately dispose of their garden waste. “Last year, we recycled 25,179 tonnes of garden waste at council landfills, which consisted of waste from green bins, personal drop-offs and commercial operations. “The quality of the end product is very dependent on the quality of the garden waste coming to us. We want to make residents aware that their green waste must not be contaminated by any other substances. “This includes processed or

painted wood and any household items which shouldn’t be placed in the green bin,” he said. Australian Native Landscapes general manager Mr Peter Kenneally said it was imperative that residents minimise contamination in their green waste. “The minimisation of green waste contamination in turn allows for the production of quality finished products such as compost, soil conditioners and mulches produced by Australian Native Landscapes. “These quality products are then used on gardens, landscaping and agricultural projects across Gosford City, producing high end results for residents,” said Mr Kenneally. Residents can dispose of up to 80kgs of green garden waste for less than $10 dollars. After this, fees are charged on a pro-rata basis. Mr Stalker said there are plans to host a similar promotion on February 1 to continue to promote these messages across the local community. “Residents should be on the lookout for details on how they can receive free gardening products for appropriately disposing of their green garden waste in the coming weeks,” he said.

Peninsula rates highly in Council achievements Gosford Council has released a review of its achievements last year with developments and improvements on the Peninsula featured a number of times. The document states that with a “renewed focus on investment and development, several major announcements for the region, notable infrastructure achievements, the introduction of new technologies, finding new solutions to old problems and an attitude shift toward the potential of our city, it has been a time of great change, challenge and success in our city”. Among the achievements noted in the document was the $5.2 million Ettalong Foreshore Redevelopment which included a new sandstone seawall, children’s playground, park furniture, car park realignment, stormwater infrastructure, landscaping, construction of a beach facilities building (cafe-kiosk and public toilets) and construction of a

pedestrian walkway-cycleway, as well as “nourishment and restoration” of the beach in the area. The redevelopment had federal, state and council funding. “The redevelopment of the Ettalong Beach Foreshore showcases the natural beauty of the area and allows both locals and visitors a better chance to share in the great natural assets of our region, as well as helping to stimulate recreational and local business activity,” said Gosford Council general manager Mr Paul Anderson. Noted as a significant road upgrade was the reconstruction of a 330 metre section of Gallipoli Ave in Blackwall. The works were the final stage in the upgrade of Gallipoli Ave and included drainage improvements, the provision of kerb and gutter, access reconstructions and a footpath - cycleway. “Council has invested around $5 million into the 967 kilometre road

network across the Gosford LGA during 2013,” said Mr Anderson. “Upgrades have been completed to improve road quality, assist traffic flow and enhance public safety,” he said. The construction of the coastline shared footpath-cycleway was also noted as progressing along Blackwall Rd, south from McMasters Rd towards Ettalong Beach. These works assist in the provision of the Coastline Cycleway linking Gosford, Woy Woy to Ettalong Beach and Sydney via the Palm Beach Ferry. “There is currently close to 40 kilometres of cycleways and shared pathways within Gosford City, with council maintaining and growing this network to increase public access and provide greater sporting and recreational options for residents and visitors,” said Mr Anderson. The $40 million Kincumber and Woy Woy Sewerage Treatment Plants Upgrade project was highlighted as one of Council’s water and sewer asset

improvements for the year with the project ensuring both plants more reliably and efficiently treat the community’s wastewater to the highest standard in terms of quality and environmental protection. Completed works include improved screening and grit removal, new odour control, scrubbing equipment, new biosolids handling systems and a new highly efficient aeration system. “Council has invested close to $50 million into Gosford’s water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure over the past 12 months to ensure Gosford City continues to provide for and meet future population demands by improving the performance, reliability and capacity of our systems,” said Mr Anderson. The Surf Life Saving NSW State Championships at Umina and Ocean Beach were identified as one of Gosford City’s most prestigious events of the year. The Championships, held in March, attracted 7609 competitors, their families and supporters to the

Central Coast, confirming the event as one of the largest competitive sporting events in Australia. “Gosford City’s unique natural assets and range of quality hospitality and accommodation venues make it a prime choice for regional, interstate, national and international events,” said Gosford mayor Cr Lawrie McKinna. Mr Anderson said: “I am extremely proud of all we have achieved already in this short time, but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. “Developers, investors and our community are now fully aware that Gosford City is open for business. “We needed to let people know that there was a new way of doing things in Gosford City. “Now that this message is clear, 2014 will be all about doing business - getting on with the job, getting things done and continuing to seize every opportunity to grow the potential of Gosford City,” Mr Anderson said. The signs, which were installed by the Ettalong Beach Business Group, direct people to the cinema, the markets, Bendigo Bank, medical facilities and restaurants. “Each year, in December and January, the influx of visitors and holiday-makers results in the tripling of Ettalong Beach’s population,” said Ettalong Beach Business Group president Ms Jeanette Polley. “With the busy tourist areas stretching from the Palm Beach Ferry to the wonderful newly upgraded foreshore area, there is much to do,” she said. Ettalong Beach Markets and Cinema Paradiso owner Mr Jerry Altavilla said the signage was a welcome addition to Ettalong Beach. “As local residents know, there is so much to do in our village

and these signs will make it a lot easier for everyone to know what is available and how to get there,” he said. The funding for the signage was part of the Business Improvement District grant provided by Gosford Council which is focused on

Ettalong man arrested on outstanding warrants Police arrested a 19-year-old Ettalong man for warrants and resist and assault police in Erina on Monday, December 23. Brisbane Water Police were conducting a shoplifting operation at Erina Fair when police saw a man walk by at about 3pm. He was known to be wanted for six outstanding warrants and believed to be actively avoiding capture.

The warrants related to outstanding matters including aggravated robberies, serious assault, custody of a knife, steal from person, throw missile at law enforcement officer and a traffic offence. These warrants were issued by the Courts following the man’s parole being revoked. Further police assistance was called for and, as the man was leaving a store, police approached

He continued to resist until police were finally able to handcuff him and escort him from the store. The man continued to struggle with police and attempted to headbutt an officer and run from police which resulted in the use of OC spray. He was then conveyed to a waiting police truck and taken to Gosford Police Station where he was decontaminated by ambulance before being charged with six outstanding warrants, one count of resist officer in execution of duty and three counts of assault officer in execution of duty. Booker Bay man returns high alcohol reading A 54-year-old man from Booker Bay has been charged with driving with a high range blood alcohol content following an accident at Ettalong. Driving south on Barrenjoey Rd, Ettalong, on Sunday, December 29, the man’s car veered across the northbound lane, mounted the kerb at the intersection with Beach St and collided with the fence of an adjacent property. Two witnesses stopped their vehicle and went to the aid of the man who they found slumped over the steering wheel. Police were flagged down and approached the man who was exiting the vehicle. He was stumbling and unsteady on his feet. As police went to check on his welfare, they said they immediately smelt liquor coming from the man and his eyes were bloodshot and

his speech was slurred. The man made several attempts to return to his vehicle, resulting in police seating him on the kerb and removing the keys to the vehicle from him. An ambulance attended and advised that the man was not suffering from any injuries resulting from the collision, nor was there any damage to the fence. He was subject to a roadside breath test which returned a positive result. He was placed under arrest and conveyed to Gosford Police Station where he was submitted to a breath analysis that returned a high range reading. He had his licence immediately suspended and was subsequently charged with one count of drive with high range PCA and one count of negligent driving. Almost forgotten memories of a simpler time This communication comes from my contact with Julie Aitchison who is researching the early days of Ocean Beach, as it was known in my early days. I have provided Julie with a lot of information of these times, from when my mother and father were prominent in the area. Julie has sent me a copy of the 70th celebration article that Ms Annette Strong published. I was born in a room behind the counter of the shop on the corner at 246 West St and Berith St in

Save our libraries Why is our library service part of the 2014 Gosford City Council restructure? Why does the council believe that one library on the Peninsula is more than enough to meet the needs of the residents and that the Umina Library will close? That’s fair enough, but have they forgotten how bad the RuddGillard government was? I remember when I was a young bloke, old timers saying “better a good Liberal government than a bad Labor government”. And the disgrace of NSW Labor remains strong in the nostrils. In my book, an Australian political party should restrict foreign ownership, stop the sale of public assets, restore tariff protection, revitalise our industries and reestablish a public owned bank for the benefit of all Australians. I wish.

Council is killing off town businesses My partner owns a florist shop in Ettalong and wants to add a tea and coffee room to the service she provides to the public. Part of the appeal for tourists and locals alike is the beachside atmosphere and ambience of the town and beach. To increase the area for servicing the public, the owner of the shop is desirous of providing footpath tables and chairs to enable her clientele to take in the atmosphere of the town, take advantage of the sea breezes on hot days, while sipping on their favourite beverage and generally relaxing. Enter Gosford City Council with its lack of interest and support for local business shown through its archaic by-laws creating a reactive approach, not proactive, towards requests of business owners by discouraging outdoor advertising disallowing footpath board advertising and display of goods. The council will not entertain the concept of outside tables and chairs for the florist and tea room because the tables and chairs have to be directly out the front of the shop, and they claim that because of a pedestrian crossing this will not be possible. The shop entrance is 5.7 metres from the start of the crossing, leaving plenty of room, 2.7 metres for tables and chairs, without impeding access to, or visual sight by pedestrians and motorists alike. The council employs planners and engineers for the good of progress and general wellbeing of our council district, so, let’s stop the rot now and start showing some interest in all of the community, not

There are many examples of double standards on a simple drive around the district. There is not even a loading zone to serve businesses in the immediate area, making it difficult to receive stock for the shops, albeit that a request has been made to council to create one. Take a walk down the main street of Ettalong business area and note the number of vacant shops of those who have had enough of fighting the system and packed it in. The council is killing off the town businesses and in time there will be nothing of interest to attract tourists and even the locals will start shopping in other areas. Unemployment is high enough in the Ettalong area and here is a business willing to buck the trend and provide at least one full time position and possibly a second part time position, only to be blocked by a seemingly disinterested council not willing to consider change. Exercise after breast cancer Women who have experienced breast cancer at any time in their lives are being invited to register now for the free “after breast cancer” exercise program, Encore, which is running in Woy Woy in February.

Peninsula Chiroprac c Centre UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT Dr. Bre M. Mu on (BA Comm, B Chiro Sc, M Chiro)

Chiropractor & Specialist in Musculo-Skeletal Medicine

The program will run from February 13 to April 3 every Thursday from 10am to 12pm. The Encore program supports the physical well-being of women after the trauma of breast cancer surgery or treatment in a nurturing and supportive environment, whether that surgery was a few months ago or 20 years ago. It runs for eight weeks, is tailored for all fitness levels and abilities and incorporates floor and hydrotherapy exercises. The Encore program is based on research revealing the benefits of exercise for women being treated for breast cancer, which shows that aerobic exercise is of particular benefit along with resistance exercises. YWCA NSW Encore manager Ms Kate Guthrey said: “The Encore Program was created to improve movement, flexibility and strength after breast cancer surgery.” “It helps to reduce the potential risk of lymphoedema and can assist in its management.

“We’ve been working with leading experts in the field of exercise and cancer to help us review the research and update our program and as a result, Encore now includes an aerobic component as well as strength and mobility exercises,” said Ms Guthry. She said that Encore helped women stay well after a difficult time in their lives, not only through the proven physical benefits of the program, but also through meeting others who’ve had similar experiences. Because medical clearance is required, it is important to register as soon as possible in order to secure a place, at least two weeks prior to the class beginning because the classes are small, and places fill up quickly. Register by calling 9285 6264 (Sydney) or 1800 305 150 or email encore@ywcansw.com.au. Participation is free. Media release, 2 Jan 2014 Hayley Bryce, YWCA NSW

Bowling club raises $15,500 for Kids in Need Woy Woy Bowling Club held its monthly charity bowls day on Sunday, December 15, and raised $15,500 for Central Coast Kids in Need. Central Coast Kids in Need provides financial support to families who have children with a prolonged illness. Most of these children are cancer patients while others are dealing with organ transplants. There are also premature babies with life threatening issues. The funds will be used to defray the costs of accommodation at Ronald McDonald House and Parent Hostel Rooms while the kids are receiving treatment. Money is also applied to travel costs, equipment requirements and pharmacy accounts. Central Coast Kids in Need officials, treasurer Rhonda Doyle and

secretary Lorraine Churchill, were on hand on the day to receive the cheque. They expressed their gratitude that Woy Woy Bowling Club members and visitors were able to raise such a large sum through their charity bowls day. Member for Robertson Ms Lucy Wicks handed over the cheque to Rhonda and Lorraine and spoke about the strong sense of community which exists at the Woy Woy Bowling Club. The club will continue to raise money for Central Coast Kids in Need throughout 2014 and hopes to hand over another big cheque to the charity in December. The evening will begin with classes for beginners, followed by the learning of a new song, rhythm pattern or technique, an open mike and then a join in Uke Circle. How great was Paul Keating? In answer to the email of John Stagg (Peninsula News, December 9) I would like to say that the only things that Paul Keating was noted for were his foul mouth, calling people scumbags, calling leaders of other countries recalcitrant and stabbing his leader Bob Hawke in the back (creating a precedent for other Labor leaders) before taking the Prime Ministership for himself. As for his record, he was the fellow that gave Australia “the recession we had to have”, gave us double digit everything from inflation, unemployment to record interest rates. Under his watch, illegal boat arrivals flourished and Australia’s National Debt was out of control. So, how great was Paul Keating? It took the Coalition Government to stop the boats completely. They stopped the economic rot that Labor left us with and left the country with a $20 billion surplus. Things were a lot more relaxed and comfortable under the

Forum Coalition. Who overturned the policy on the boats and opened the flood gates to illegal immigration, creating much of the tension between our country and Indonesia? Labor did! Who introduced a Carbon Tax only weeks after Julia Gillard said: “There will be no Carbon Tax under a government that I lead”? Labor did! This is a tax which has directly contributed to the exorbitantly high power bills everyone has been lumbered with and a tax that Labor now refuses to repeal in the Senate, leaving said bills escalating. Which government spent the $20 billion surplus and once again left the country with debt levels spiralling out of control? Labor did! They introduced yet another tax to try and recoup the billions of dollars they squandered, but all that did was to place a large burden on one of the only sectors making money for Australia, a tax, incidentally that doesn’t work and

another tax that Labor now refuses to repeal in the Senate. The relationship between Indonesia and Australia, namely the spying on the Indonesian president’s phone calls, occurred during Kevin Rudd’s term as Prime Minister. It is once again left to the Coalition government to clean up the carnage and wreckage left after a rampaging Labor Government that once again left the national debt at record levels, boat arrivals at record levels, a carbon tax and a mining tax that Labor gave us, the demise of Mitsubishi, Ford and now Holden that will no longer be building motor vehicles here in this country and putting thousands of Australians out of work. Great economic work on Labor’s part (NOT!), a problem created by the former government. Labor had six years to get it right, but failed miserably. The Coalition has been in office for just over three months, so it may take just a little bit longer to clean up all that mess that has been left. Email, 20 Dec 2013 Ken Woolcott, Booker Bay

Smoking a problem at shopping centre entrance I agree with Jim Brooks (Peninsula News, December 23) about smokers near the entrance to Deepwater Plaza. I think Gloria Jeans coffee shop should move their chairs away from the entrance as this is an occupational health issue. I do not like smoking myself. It stinks and is a health hazard. Yes, management should police it, but when is this going to happen? You can’t tell people what they can and cannot do; if they wish to smoke that is their choice but

I filled out the paperwork and was told everything was kosher. I have since been told by Centrelink that I have to declare my partner’s income from the railways in which he is an engineer operator with the car and wagon trains.

My partner does shift work with general hours and little overtime. If he earns over the tax threshold he generally has to pay something to the tax department. I have my own accounts; we have no joint accounts at all. My partner finds it very intrusive by Centrelink to know his affairs. Why can’t pensioners, who have worked all their lives, have any invested monies or other funds to be comfortable without getting a pension cut? Letter, 20 Dec 2013 Linda Grindley, Woy Woy

As a foundation Mariners player, Mr Clark has served his hometown club with distinction, both on and off the field since 2005. Current Mariners coach Phil Moss said that Mr Clark departs for the J-League with the blessing of management, staff, players and fans. “Andrew Clark has been a great contributor to the success of the Central Coast Mariners since year one,” Moss said. “As much as anyone, Andrew epitomises what the Mariners are all about, and we know local people think extremely highly of him.” Mr Clark is relishing the opportunity to ply his trade in the Japanese competition, signing a deal which will see him remain at the club for the next two seasons. “In the past I have been offered the chance to work at other sporting clubs in Australia, but to be frank I have never wanted to work at any other sporting club in Australia,” Mr Clark said. “This opportunity takes me to another level, and gives me the chance to chase my dream of working at the highest standard I can in the football world. “My respect, loyalty and love for the Mariners doesn’t stop because I’m leaving. “The Mariners will always be my team and as a group we are so proud of what we have achieved. “Arnie and I will do our best in Sendai, and back in Australia the Mariners will be in capable hands

with Phil Moss, John Crawley and Wayne O’Sullivan.” While football is essentially the reason for Mr Clark’s departure, he believes it will be a fantastic chance to live amongst a different culture with his whole family benefiting. “While first and foremost this is a career opportunity, it is also a great opportunity to live in a new culture along with my beautiful wife and two young daughters,” Mr Clark said. It will be an amazing experience for all of us.” “Clarky is a very ambitious person so a move to the J-League takes him to another level in his career,” Moss said. “We hope he can help Graham achieve success with Sendai, and

Photo: Wikipedia will be watching their progress keenly.” Mr Clark will continue working with Central Coast until Hyundai A-League 2013/14 round 10, when the Mariners travel to the city of churches to take on Adelaide United. He will then enjoy a brief break before leaving for Japan in January. “In keeping with the Mariners’ philosophy, there is a succession plan in place, and Andrew’s replacement will be appointed following round 10 in Adelaide,” Moss said. Umina man captains Cyclones to victory The Central Coast Cyclones Over 60s cricket team, captained by Umina resident Gordon Ives, was victorious in its game at Doyalson on Wednesday, December 11. Gordon won the toss for the Central Coast Cyclones and elected to bat first. The Cyclones batted well and reached 170 for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 40 overs. The powerful hitting of openers Billy Moffat who retired on 40 and Bobby Zielke 35, also retired, laid the foundations for the innings. Gordon chipped in with 25 retired and wicket keeper Gary Castles boosted the score with 17 not out. Cook, two wickets for nine, and ex-Australian Test spinner Bobby Holland with one wicket for one run were the pick of the visiting bowlers. Newcastle responded strongly with the bat and, following contributions of 29 from Black who

was run out, 36 from Cook who retired and 23 from Holland, they finally fell short of the Cyclones score by five runs. John hit a six from the last ball of the game. Newcastle finished on nine for 165 in 40 overs. Lenny Hardy with four for 17 in six overs and Bobby Newman’s two for 27 helped to swing the game for the Cyclones. The match was played in good spirit with quality cricket from both sides. The only unfortunate occurrence was accidental when visiting fielder Alan Squires broke a finger attempting to catch a shot from Billy Moffat. He was whisked away to Wyong Hospital for treatment. The Cyclones now take a break until later this month when they are involved in numerous fixtures around the State. Media release, 12 Dec 2013 Andy Martin, Central Coast Cyclones
