Police claim closure of outlaw motorcycle gang clubhouse
Gosford Council has commissioned consultants to undertake a Transport Management and Accessibility Plan within the Umina Beach Village Centre.
Police have closed what they claim was a Rebels “outlaw motorcycle gang clubhouse” in Woy Woy as part of investigations into unlawful sale of alcohol.
The plan will be based on traffic counts and an analysis of the intersection of Wellington St and Ocean Beach Rd as well as the intersection of Wellington St and Trafalgar Ave. It will examine whether the Wellington St and Ocean Beach Rd intersection should be upgraded to signals. The decision was made after council received a petition with 445 signatures from residents who said they regularly crossed Wellington St. Petitioners stated that turning traffic from Trafalgar Ave and
Officers attached to Strike Force Raptor conducted a search warrant at the “clubhouse” in Mutu St at 9:30pm on Friday, April 11. They were assisted by police from Brisbane Water Local Area Command, the Police Rescue Squad and the Dog Unit. During the search, police allegedly located an amount of cash as well as documents, ledgers and “outlaw motorcycle gang paraphernalia”. They also seized bottles of alcohol, the bar, including fridges, tables, chairs, and a pool table. Four men, who police allege are members of the Rebels outlaw

Three of the men were issued traffic infringement notices and had their vehicles defected as they left the scene. Police from Brisbane Water Local Area Command are continuing investigations with action expected to be taken for alleged breaches of the Environmental Planning and Protection Act. Fibre-to-the-node trials reach speeds of 105Mbps Download speeds of 105 megabits per second and upload speeds of 45 Mbps have been demonstrated in trials of fibre-to-the-node technology by the NBN Co at Umina, according to Member for Robertson Ms Lucy Wicks. “These results are an important milestone in the rollout of the National Broadband Network. “NBN Co said that this trial has demonstrated that existing technologies such as the copper network have a vital role to play in
delivering high speed broadband to Australians.” She said: “It will be faster, cheaper and more reliable for taxpayers.” “Umina is one of the first two locations in Australia to be involved in testing how we can overcome some of the technology limitations.” Meanwhile, 2800 residents in Koolewong, Tascott and Point Clare will get fibre to their home. Ms Wicks said construction had begun as part of “the Coalition Government’s efforts to speed up the NBN rollout … for
residents and businesses on the Central Coast”. The slower fibre-to-the-node technology trial was conducted recently by NBN Co engineers in Umina. Engineers installed a VDSL modem in a shopfront and connected the copper telephone line to a node cabinet in the street 100m away, according to Ms Wicks. The node cabinet, which has been erected alongside a Telstra pillar, converts electrical currents transmitted over traditional copper wires into pulses of light
Chamber seeks rollout date The Peninsula Chamber of Commerce is increasing pressure on the Federal Government to have high speed broadband available in the commercial areas of the Peninsula. “The business community on the Peninsula is still waiting for confirmation as to when our retail centres will be connected to high speed broadband,” said Peninsula Chamber of Commerce president Mr Matthew Wales. “Whilst it’s good new to see the NBN rollout happening in
residential zones, it is business and commerce that desperately need better internet access, higher download capability and better speeds. “Commercial centres like Woy Woy are prime targets for high speed broadband access with a number of technology companies located in the town centre. “If we are to encourage more of these high value companies and businesses to the Peninsula, then we need NBN sooner rather than later. “The Chamber is eagerly awaiting the result of the trial NBN rollout in Umina Beach
with the expectation that the technology trial will result in a quicker rollout on the Peninsula,” said Mr Wales. Mr Wales welcomed the announcement by Member for Robertson Ms Lucy Wicks that the NBN network would be rolled out to 2800 residents in Point Clare, Koolewong and Tascott over the coming months. “This is good news and demonstrates that the Federal Government is getting on with the job”, he said. that can travel over optical fibres. Once active, the next step will see NBN Co invite retail service providers to participate in a limited fibre-to-the-node end-user trial in these locations. This limited term trial will test the delivery and end user experience of high speed broadband via fibre-to-the-node to a small number of premises at each location. The results of the technology trial bolster the findings of the NBN Co Strategic Review, which found that the NBN could be rolled out faster and at a much
lower cost by using a mix of technologies. “The Government’s changes to the NBN rollout will save $32 billion, will see upgrades delivered four years sooner than under Labor and avoid internet retail bills increasing by up to $43 a month,” said Ms Wicks. Suburbs and towns with the worst broadband service will get priority under NBN Co’s rollout strategy. Media release, 29 Apr 2014 Tim Sowden, Office of Lucy Wicks MP
Call for full results The NBN Co should publish the full results of its Umina trial, according to local broadband campaigner Mr David Abrahams. “I welcome the trial as it adds to the research and development in the field and may lead to future opportunities for certain areas,” he said. “All this ‘faster, cheaper’ nonsense talk is not helping anyone. “What helps is up-front information.” Mr Abrahams welcomed the announcement that Tascott and Koolewong would receive “fibre-tothe-premises”. However, he said that if “fibre-
to-the-node” was rolled out across the Peninsula, “the Peninsula will be compromised in comparison to Gosford and surrounds”. “The cold fact remains that fibre-to-the-node is a compromise technology that represents a significant downgrade of the regional investment that was previously planned and published. “Superfast, reliable broadband is increasingly becoming the infrastructure of the 21 century. “Many people worked for years to secure the Central Coast’s NBN investment. undreds of Central Coast locals paid tribute to Australian servicemen and women, from all wars and conflicts, at ANZAC Day services in the Gosford LGA on Friday, April 25.
Senator for NSW Deborah O’Neill said ANZAC Day is an opportunity for all Australians to pay tribute to the men and women who have served our nation in wars, conflicts and on peacekeeping operations. “It is also a day for us to recall the terrible cost of war and the precious lives lost by those who defended us and the values we share as Australians who believe in
democracy, in freedom, and in equality.” Senator O’Neill said ANZAC Day is one of the most important dates in our commemorative calendar. “We give our eternal gratitude to the sailors, soldiers, airmen and women, past and present, who have given so much for us, in this century and the last. “This year is the first year
where all our servicemen and women who served in Afghanistan will be back with us. “As they settle back in to life at home after many honourable tours of duty, we reflect on their sacrifice and remember those lost in that conflict.” Media release, 24 Apr 2014 Richard Mehrtens, office of Deborah O’Neill

Under laws introduced by former Premier O’Farrell, these donations are illegal. “If these allegations are correct, they are completely unacceptable, they are against the law, and they fall well below what the community deserves from their elected officials. “This is looking like a root and branch issue of corruption in the Liberal Party, not just a matter of one or two incidents, but an established and organised activity to subvert the Liberal Party’s own donations laws. “The Central Coast deserves a better deal than having four out of six Liberal Members of Parliament called into ICAC,” Senator O’Neill said. “Chris Hartcher, Darren Webber, and Chris Spence faced questions concerning whether they corruptly solicited, received, and

Senator O’Neill slams Central Coast Liberals involved in ICAC hearings “It is only day one and the State Liberals have already lost another senior member of their government. “After losing a Premier to corruption allegations only two weeks ago, and Chris Hartcher resigning in December last year under the same cloud, it’s about time that the alleged activities of this government were investigated,” Senator O’Neill said. The hearing into Operation Spicer began on Monday, April 28, in Sydney with assertions already mounting against a number of senior Liberal Party figures. “These allegations go right to the core of the Liberal Party and speak volumes about what they see as their role in government”, Senator O’Neill said. The proposal is for a 20 storey (70m) building with 93 apartments and retail floor space including restaurants. “This is a $45 million development that combined with two other planned developments at The Entrance is worth more than $500 million,” Mayor Eaton said. “It will see a suite of public benefit contributions from the developer totalling over $1.5 million that will go towards improvements in the Town Centre including Memorial Park,” he said. “It is envisaged that around 250 construction jobs and 120 jobs upon completion will be created through this development.” Media release, 9 Apr 2014 Wyong Council Media

Holstein receives views on boarding house proposal Member for Gosford Mr Chris Holstein has received about 150 representations about the Ettalong Beach boarding house proposal. “I am in no doubt where the vast majority of the local community stands on this issue. “I share some of those critical concerns such as character issues, appropriate infrastructure, crime risk assessments and traffic.” Mr Holstein said: “As the community’s representative, I have made those views known to the proper authority at various levels, and also the strength of the concerns expressed through our office.” However, Mr Holstein said that the proposal would be decided by Gosford Council “The development application is a matter for Gosford Council and, in the first instance, is a matter to be assessed by the council officers as is due process. “It is only in the aftermath of their assessment that it may become a matter for the full council - probably dependent on the result of that assessment.”
“Our office is not aware of any application by the DA proponent for State Government grants-funding and therefore I have certainly not supported any. “As a former councillor, I believe in the integrity of the process, and trust that it will deliver. “The fact that I am not out there grandstanding on what is a council issue, but prefer to work within the process and with the people responsible for it, does not mean I am any less committed to the right outcome for the local community. “The real shame is on those political enemies who would try and exploit what is an emotive issue for many people in our community,” said Mr Holstein. Mr Holstein said he had spoken to many residents, had met with a delegation from the concerned residents group in his office and had continued dialogue by phone, and have had one-to-one update meetings since. He said his office had received e-mail, phone calls, letters and over-the-counter inquiries about the proposal from local residents.

Gosford Council has awarded a six month contract to Robson’s Civil Projects for the hire of a D11N Dozer for Woy Woy tip after the previous two successful tenderers withdrew their submission. Council originally awarded the tender to Absolute Earthmoving Repairs on February 11. Absolute Earthmoving Repairs was significantly cheaper than the bulk of the contractors and was notified of their success in gaining the contract on the morning of February 17. The contractor then informed council late Monday afternoon that the company was unable to commit to the hire rates tendered and withdrew their tender. To reduce delays and costs,

His report stated that an area existing within the landfill parameters has a large deposit of sandstone and shale that would be suitable for daily and interim cover material as well as providing operational material for road repair and internal bunding. “Accessing this material requires the use of a large dozer. “The short term hire of the dozer (up to six months) will allow enough material to be sourced and stockpiled to provide cover and operational material for several years.” Gosford Council agenda CIT.C9, 22 Apr 2014

Council received four petitions in February, with a total of 347 signatures, which outlined a variety of concerns including: the development being out of character with the seaside village and holiday area; an increase in traffic and congestion, particularly in the area where the ferry arrives and departs in Ferry

Gosford Council has voted to initiate the “gateway” planning process to zone land within the Kincumber Sewage Treatment Plant site to permit a new resource recovery facility. The Kincumber site was chosen as an alternative to Springfield
Quarry and will process and recycle green waste as well as materials, such as road base and concrete from council’s construction and maintenance operations. The recycling is not only expected to reduce the amount of waste going to the Woy Woy landfill site but will also lessen the requirement for new construction materials for council’s operations.

Wicks attends wreath-laying Member for Robertson Ms Lucy Wicks attended the wreath laying ceremony at Ettalong Foreshore on Anzac Day, Friday, April 25. Ms Wicks said that, on Anzac Day, it is important to take a moment to reflect and recognise the men and women who served our nation in wars, conflicts and on peacekeeping operations. “As a nation and as a community here on the Central Coast, we have a responsibility to ensure that service and sacrifice is never forgotten. “We will remember those who

What’s the hold-up Thanks mate. Have a good one! at Umina Mall? Umina Beach is becoming the place to “be seen” on the Peninsula. It’s thriving high street, coffee shops and small business overall have managed to thrive despite the big supermarkets moving into town. One part of Umina Beach certainly lets the place down. This is Umina Mall, on the corner of Ocean Beach Rd and Lone Pine Ave. This facility is almost at the gateway of our suburb. Why then does it continue to trade in such a delapitated state? New development plans and artist’s impression of the proposed
Forum Lone Pine Plaza development were displayed in your paper as far back as September 2009 with a further article appearing in November 2010 stating “Council approves plans”. In spite of our new councils valiant attempts to drag the Central Coast into the 21st century, there is always someone or group who are acting like barnacles on the ship of progress. What may one ask is holding up this much-needed development? Email, 1 May 2014 Jayne Mote, Umina
When the kids were young they always wanted to come to the area you now call the Peninsula.
I know the beauty of the surroundings and have a wife who has always wanted to retire up there. At ages 75 and 77, we had better get moving! However, with health problems in recent years; my wife has had three falls with all the “nasties” they can bring - so we have missed driving to the Central Coast for a while. The past week, as a gift from the kids, we made it to the Glades Motor Inn at Woy Woy and I just wanted to say this time more than

It is remarkable that the Ettalong Boarding House proposal has begun at the same time as cheap housing is being relocated from Sydney city. Can we not learn from the Sydney experience that it is a shocking waste of resources to build such a facility on prime seaside land? By all means have the facility in Ettalong, just not on prime seaside real estate. Email, 19 Apr 2014 Mary Newhouse, Woy Woy

Chamber calls for wharf at Bangalow St Peninsula Chamber of Commerce is calling for the Ferry Rd wharf at Ettalong to be replaced by a wharf at the approved high speed ferry terminal at Bangalow St. President Mr Matthew Wales said the “old Ferry Rd wharf” had a limited lifespan and “the aging structure” needed to be upgraded or replaced. “At the moment the existing wharf facility poses some real problems including its capacity, structural integrity and passenger safety, not to mention the acute parking problem in Ferry Rd. “Repair or replacement of the Ferry Rd wharf over the next few years is inevitable and the Chamber is advocating for a new facility to be built at Bangalow St where an approval is currently in place for a new state of the art wharf and terminal facility. “The Bangalow St wharf was approved for the Ettalong Beach fast ferry and enjoys an active consent that could be commenced within months. “The Chamber has entered into discussions with the Central Coast
Regional Development Corporation and the Federal Member for Robertson Lucy Wicks so as to seek funding from the Federal Government to construct the new facility. “It’s ideal timing with a shovel ready project at a time when a replacement wharf is going to be needed over the next few years. “The new wharf facility would be capable of accommodating the existing Palm Beach Ferry service, emergency services vessels, Coastal Patrol and Water Police. “It would also open the way for a potential ferry operator between Circular Quay and Ettalong Beach which could accommodate both commuters and tourists to the area. “The new wharf would also integrate with the recent $5.4 million dollar upgrade of the Ettalong Beach Foreshore Reserve recently completed by Gosford City Council and provide a real boost for the town centre,” said Mr Wales. Mr Wales said negotiations and discussions were continuing with Gosford Council, the Central Coast Regional Development Corporation and Ms Wicks. Plaque for rehab unit campaigner A ceremony to unveil a bronze plaque commemorating the late Brian Neville was held at the Woy Woy Hospital Rehabilitation Unit on Thursday, April 10. Mr Neville, a double amputee, had been a member of the Woy Woy Hospital Alliance, a group of citizens who protested at the closure of the hospital’s rehabilitation ward in December 2008, a campaign that led to the creation of the present complex.

“The Alliance has presented the plaque in admiration and gratitude for Brian’s memorable contribution,” said Woy Woy Hospital Alliance chairman Mr Ivan Kinny. “It is in glowing bronze lettering on a royal blue background, and is the artistic work of Phoenix Foundry of Uralla. “The cost was met by Edward James, life member, activist and generous benefactor of the Alliance. “The fine stone base was executed and presented by Gosford Quarries. “The skill in joining them and placing them elegantly in the entrance garden of the unit was provided by members of the hospital’s maintenance staff,” said Mr Kinny. Guest speakers at the ceremony were Member for Gosford Mr Chris Holstein and Senator for NSW Ms Deborah O’Neill, both of who worked at their parliamentary levels to secure the financing of the new unit. “Chris spoke of the inspiration that Brian had been to the many who had worked on the project,” said Mr Kinny.

“Deborah said she saw Brian as a beacon of hope and encouragement to the whole community. “She also noted the value of two governments working together. Chris agreed. “At the unveiling, Brian’s widow Irene gracefully lifted the covering from the plaque, and then expressed her gratitude for the honour that had been bestowed on her husband. “The hospital Chaplain, the Rev Fiona Bergstrom, offered a prayer. “The plaque was then viewed, and seen as a thing of beauty, a fitting tribute to a greatly loved man, and an admirable adornment to a treasured hospital adjunct. “The whole afternoon had been uniquely and beautifully framed by bright baroque music generously provided by a quartet from the Kincumber Consort of recorder players with horn soloist.” Mr Kinny said that nurse unit manager Trish Hayes and corporate communications manager Terry Hayes gave genial and active support in the organisation of the ceremony. Ms Davis said she found the children in the elementary school to be “very spontaneous and welcoming”. “The children in the high schools had a lot of questions to ask us about school life here,” said Ms Davis. “Many children undertake extra studies after school and can be studying until 8pm at night on a regular basis. “The class sizes were very similar to here with most classes I saw having between 28 and 32 students. “It is very common for teachers to observe other teachers teach their lessons
and, like Australia, there is a National Curriculum. “Children leave their street shoes in lockers when they arrive at school and wear slip on rubber shoes whilst in the classrooms. “The children are provided with a hot meal each day which I managed to sample as we ate in the school cafeteria on one occasion. The meal was delicious. “I also visited the Australian Embassy whilst in Seoul. “My understanding of the history, culture, and progress of the country has been significantly enhanced as a result of this study tour. “I am really pleased that I invested my school holidays in this learning venture,” said Ms Davis. The non-profit organisation aims to ensure that all companion animals have a safe and loving home. It aims to achieve zero euthanasia of healthy cats and dogs. People can support the Central Coast Branch of the Animal Welfare League by becoming a volunteer dog or cat foster carer, adopting a cat or dog, donating financially or giving any saleable items for the AWL’s Op Shop in Woy Woy, buying items from the AWL Op Shop and joining the Central Coast branch and working as a volunteer. AWL NSW finds new homes for thousands of surrendered, neglected and abandoned pets every year. It depends heavily on donations from the community, and on volunteers throughout NSW who make an enormous contribution of their time and effort. The Central Coast Branch started in 1980 and now has more than 50 members. Branch secretary Ms Debra

Little Theatre presents Streetcar Named Desire Woy Woy Little Theatre’s latest production, A Streetcar Named Desire, will open at the Peninsula Theatre in Woy Woy on the night of Friday, May 16, for a three weekend season. There were two plays Woy Woy Little Theatre director Mr John Hickey said he wanted to be involved with before he hung up his community theatre cap. “I wanted to play the ultimate character in a play – the character every actor worth his salt wants to do as he gets older,” said the director who has been involved with more than 100 Woy Woy Little Theatre productions over the past 52 years. “Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman is one hell of a part and one I would have killed to play. “But Salesman was one play we never got around to producing here at Woy Woy,” said Mr Hickey, who added the other play he had had in his sights for some time was classic American play written by Tennessee Williams, A Streetcar Named Desire. “Streetcar has always been a

Stella who loves her husband with incredible passion. “Into this love nest comes the
fragile Blanche DuBois, Stella’s older sister. “But the steamy, urban ambiance of Stella’s cramped apartment in a less than desirable area of New Orleans is a shock to Blanche’s nerves. “On the fringes of sanity, Blanche soon discovers that she cannot outrun her past and the stage is set for her final, brutal confrontation with her brother-inlaw. “What transpires has become a magnificent classic piece of theatre that has won numerous awards over the years,” said Mr Hickey who also praised his cast. “Christine Vale as Blanche, newcomer Xavier Ryan as Stanley, Kellie Martin as Stella – they’re all wonderful. “Added to the mix are other actors including Graham Vale, Keith Conway, Jessica Alex, Robert Cottam, Sierra Phillips and our newest Woy Woy Little Theatre member 17-year-old Connor Sheridan from Gosford High,” said Mr Hickey.

Rotary team visits Cambodian school A team from the Rotary Club of Woy Woy visited Cambodia from February 17 to March 2 to help make a difference in a community school operating in a poor suburban area of Siem Reap. The team provided education, school meals and family support to over 700 children. “Despite desperate poverty, the people of Cambodia are positive and have a determination to forge ahead to build an improved future for their families, their community and their country, said club member Mr Graham Taylor. “With tourism booming in Cambodia the outlook for employment is encouraging but the majority of job opportunities will only go to those with good English comprehension and communication skills, said Mr Taylor. This was the key area of focus for the Rotary team who spent much of their time teaching conversational English to groups of 50 students in classrooms that are little more than a thatched hut. On arrival at the school, members of the team said they were humbled by the experience of hundreds of excited children clamouring for attention.
“The sound and vision of the children’s passionate singing at the welcoming assembly will remain a life-long memory for the team members, said Mr Taylor. “Participating in meal time was also a daily highlight for the team, he said.
A daily on-site nutritious meal is supplied to all students which provides nourishment and acts as a safety net for poor families and helps keep children in school. For many students this may be their only meal of the day. The team also worked within the
local community and were quickly confronted with the harsh realities of daily life there. “Regretfully, poverty, poor housing conditions, very limited education, lack of access to healthcare and high unemployment are simply a way of life, said Mr
Taylor. “However, the team worked very hard and were able to provide help and give hope to the most needy families.â€? Team member Ms Di Schwarzl said: “This was the best and most rewarding experience of my life, the job is not ďŹ nished and I will be going back.â€? New software used at bowls carnival A new computer program was used successfully at the National Past Presidents Friendship Carnival hosted by Terrigal and Ettalong bowling clubs from April 2 to 8. The program came complete with full instructions and only required the file to be opened and, with two mouse clicks, the score sheet is set up on the monitor with the required number of teams and rounds displayed. The program also includes a
rink draw. Five files are available for download and they cover the most popular tournament formats. When the scores for each team in each round of a tournament are entered into the program the results are shown from first place through to last. Some clubs also connect a large screen television for display in the clubhouse. Media release, 7 Apr 2014 Bob Bourke, Bowls Central Coast

Ducks Crossing Publications has a very liberal credit policy for advertisers and realises that from time to time, people, businesses and organisations get into financial difficulty and may need assistance and time to get things back on track. However, some people, businesses and organisations take advantage of this generosity they use advertising but simply don’t pay their account after several months and need to be taken to court to do so. Almost 400 lawn bowlers and their partners from all states in Australia converged on the Central Coast on Tuesday, April 1, to compete in the Bowls Past Presidents National Friendship Carnival of Bowls. About 300 members were welcomed by Member for Robertson Ms Lucy Wicks, Member for Gosford Mr Chris Holstein and Gosford Council deputy mayor Cr Bob Ward at the welcome dinner held on Wednesday,
April 2, at Ettalong Beach War Memorial Club. Non-bowling days were organised by the committee with tours and activities for the guests which included a Starship cruise, a Hunter Valley win trip, two train trips to Sydney with harbour ferry rides to Watsons Bay and a mystery tour which saw visits to the Australian Reptile Park, the Ken Duncan gallery and local beaches. Forty men’s teams and 18 women’s teams participated in the bowls tournaments which were held at Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club,
Terrigal Bowling Club and Davistown Bowling Club. Although known as the Friendship Carnival, bowls were played at a competitive level with eight matches played by the men and four matches played by the women. All trophies were presented at the presentation dinner on Tuesday, April 8, in the presence of the Zone 15 management and world champion Aron Sherriff. Under-18 bowls champs played at Ettalong The final of the Bowls Central Coast Under-18 Championship was played at Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club on Monday, April 14. The final was played between two composite teams skipped by Terrigal’s Jayden Moody and Ettalong’s Jacob Casswell. Moody’s team held a slight edge going into the last three ends but Caswell kept
his team’s hopes alive with some accurate on shots. Moody countered with some fine draw bowling to seal the game 20-15. The winning team comprised skipper Jayden Moody, Mitchell McDonnell from Halekulani, James Burton from Terrigal and Josh McDonnell from Halekulani. Runners-up were skipper Jacob Casswell, Jacob
Burnes of Bateau Bay, Bailey Meti of Ettalong, Caileb Peck of Bateau Bay. National, State and Central Coast representative player Aron Sherriff was on hand to present the boys with their winners’ badges and congratulated all the players on the high standard of the final. PCYC produces more boxing champions Umina PCYC has now produced two more Australian Champions in amateur boxing, following the success of five times Australian Champion and current World Junior Champion Satali TeviFuimaono. Tevi-Fuimaono has just returned from Bulgaria with his coach Joel Keegan where he was fighting in the World Youth Boxing Titles. He has now qualified for the Junior Olympics which will be held in China in August. Satali won three of four fights which means he is now in the top six boxers in the world in the older youth age category. He defeated fighters from Nigeria, England and the USA but lost against the eventual winner from Russia. Meanwhile, three other members of the Umina PCYC team flew to Freemantle in Western Australia after winning NSW State Titles in their division to contest the Australian Amateur Boxing Titles Jason Fawcett won his second Australian title with a unanimous points win over his Western
Australian opponent in the 40kg Junior Male Division. Jason attends Brisbane Water Secondary College Umina Campus and is in Year 8. Last year he won the 32kg division at the Australian Titles in his first year of boxing. Steve Turner lost a close fight to his Victorian opponent in the semi-final. “A relative novice in the sport, Turner is rapidly making a name for himself and will be one to watch at next year’s Australian Titles,” said Umina PCYC assistant coach Paul Covi. “Stunned early in the first round, he fought back hard in the second and third rounds to lose a close fight to his more experienced opponent, who had over 30 fights under his belt to his six contests.” Ryan Covi is the new Australian Amateur Boxing Champion after winning the junior male 70kg division. Ryan, who is in Year 10 at Gosford Selective High School, drew a bye in the quarter finals and then beat a fighter from Tasmania in the semi-final on unanimous points. He then fought a fighter from

South Australia who had won gold at last year’s titles and beat him unanimously to be crowned the new Australian Champion. Ryan has won his past 17 fights in succession beating the best fighters in the country. In the past 12 months he has won the Queensland Novice State Titles in Brisbane, NSW State Novice and Open Titles in Richmond, Australian Golden Gloves Titles – Open Division in Brisbane and the Australian Amateur Boxing Titles in Freemantle. “Two boys unlucky not to be on the plane to Western Australia were Taz Bensley and Kyle Schneider,” said Covi. “Bensley lost a very controversial decision at the NSW State Titles in the 56kg division and, after winning gold at the NSW State Titles, Hunter Sports High student and up and coming rugby league star Schneider could not be matched in the 66kg Schoolboy Division,” he said. Woy Woy rugby team lose at Ourimbah In round three of the Central Coast Rugby Union competition played on Saturday, April 26, Ourimbah defeated Woy Woy by 41 points to 10 at Ourimbah Rugby Park. It was Ourimbah’s first home game of the season and Central Coast Rugby Union president Mr Larry Thomson said the result showed they would be one of the top performing teams in this year’s Premiership race. “There was nothing in the opening stages in the match with play flowing from one end of the field to the other,” said Thomson. “It was a very physical clash with several hard hitting tackles being a feature of the first half. “Ourimbah did open the scoring in the fourth minute when they kicked a penalty goal, to their centre Brenton Law. “However, generally for the opening 15 minutes of the match there was absolutely nothing in the match. “The home team went further ahead in the 15th minute when their halfback Matt King crashed over for a try after some concerted team pressure. “The conversion of this try had taken Ourimbah to a very handy 10 points to nil lead. “However, once again the game had developed into a war of attrition.
“Heavy defence was forcing quite a few errors and it did become quite a stop-start pattern of play for much of the remainder of the first half. “Woy Woy did kick a penalty goal in the 28th minute to reduce the lead to 10–3 and they were definitely in the match at that stage. “However, the last 10 minutes of the first half proved disastrous for Woy Woy. “In that period, Ourimbah’s kicker Brenton Law kicked four penalty goals in very quick succession and these took the home lead to an almost match winning lead of 22 points to three at the halftime break. “These indiscretions by Woy Woy may have proved the difference in the match. “They had made things very difficult for themselves. “Woy Woy started the second half brilliantly. “They scored a try within two minutes of the start of the half and the conversion of this try had reduced the score to 22 points to 10. “The match was probably much closer than the scores indicated at this stage but it is the scoreboard that counts. “The second half was continuing to be a very physical battle, with a lot of penalties at the breakdown. “Ourimbah quickly responded to the early Woy Woy try in this half and they scored their own try in the sixth minute.
“Then midway through the second half a great push from the Ourimbah scrum saw their number eight Tony Paulo crash over for the good team try. “So at the half way point of the second half Ourimbah had secured a winning 34 points to 10 lead. “Woy Woy never gave up. “They continued to play hard and defended stoutly and Ourimbah only scored their fourth try in the
dying stages of the match when flanker Brad Sheridan made a good individual run to cross for the try. ‘Ourimbah had run out winners by 41 points to 10. “Both teams showed they will have good seasons and will win more games than they lose. “Best players for Ourimbah were number eight Tony Paulo, halfback Matt King, lock Tyler Jones, and inside centre Brenton Law.
“Woy Woy had their chances but errors at the wrong time always put them on the back foot. “Their best players were hooker Nick Garnett and five-eight Matt Riddell and, when he came on in the second half, halfback Sioni Toki, certainly made an impact,” said Thomson.
