The Wing is a network of co-working and community spaces for women, founded in Manhattan’s Ladies Mile in 2016. My responsibilities for The Wing SoHo included coordinating with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and lighting design consultants. Along with Alda Ly, I communicated directly with the client, presenting at biweekly design meetings. All drawings produced in AutoCAD.

Kinfolk-ish

This research began somewhere at the intersection of working on The Wing, while reading Lev Manovich's Instagram and Contemporary Image and sitting in a WeWork lounge from which I freelanced at. WeWork and The Wing, among many other heavy branded environments, have developed an interior palette that creates what we might call, expanding upon Manovich, "Interior Instagrammisms." Spatial production for the realm of Instagram is perhaps more suited for group ethnographic observations than interior designer intuitions. Someone who understands the entanglement of capital currency and social currency, who has the analyzed data on what you've liked and what you wish to have liked. This project continues to explore this weaponization of spatial production with quantitative analysis. I began with the slow lifestyle magazine Kinfolk, a brand affluent in Instagram class with its style copied throughout Instagram. In an interview with Dan Howarth, Kinfolk cofounder Nathan Williams states “The Kinfolk look has become so influential that every over-styled, washed-out Instagram photo of a succulent or a cup of coffee is now deemed to be part of its visual bandwagon." The background of this spread is a Kinfolk contact sheet, representing every single Instagram post from @kinfolk from 2015 to the present. Seeing image-patterns and sampling the most frequent traits, the output of this data is spatialized into an uncanny Kinfolk-ish environment.

Westchester Square Public Library's immediate proximity to the 6-line Westchester Avenue station creates interesting sequential conditions as you approach, behaving almost as a community inhabited billboard for bypassing trains. This proximity also comes with technical challenges, with the implementation of a triple glazed insulating glass unit system for thermal and acoustic reasons. 6

My role in the interior design was to finalize the baffle system, carrying through the concept of canopy atmospheric in dialogue with the facade patterning. Play Perch “An apparatus to provide handicap children with the notion of being suspended above nature” Type: Outdoor Classroom Client: Jowonio School Location: Syracuse, NY Year Completed: 2014

The client Jowonio is a preschool that is a recognized world leader in innovative education with a wide range of skills, needs, and backgrounds for children, ages three through six years old. Last year, the preschool approached Syracuse AIAS Freedom By Design group to design and build an accessible classroom on the nature trail. Play Perch was derived from the conceptualization of utilizing the outdoor classroom as an apparatus to provide handicap children with the notion of being suspended above nature and into the birds nest.” The interior design consists of a blue tile floor suitable for playground use, continuing above the two seating-tunnel furniture pieces called “the caterpillar” and “the slug.” The vibrantly colored interior space operates in contrast with the subtle hues of the exterior materials.

Basically Now “Old Poveglia should be allowed to continue its decay; from a learning standpoint, what good is an old building if we don’t let it get older?” Team: If So—Then What? Project: Poveglia University Location: Venice, Italy Partner: Alex Kim Year Completed: 2016

We’re not really sure what we’re doing here. We mean, literally, here—in Poveglia. Why are we here? Why Poveglia? What do we give a site like Poveglia, a long abandoned island with some old stuff on it, by saying, “University?” We are inclined to believe that we’ve got the equation of preservation all backwards. We unfortunately have nothing to offer Poveglia. Poveglia is merely an architectural carcass, and dead things have no desires. However, the historic corpse of Poveglia has much to offer the living—the now, and the program of a university, is in fact, the ideal apparatus to send the island into a socially responsible afterlife.

The opportunity to coexist with and perhaps even learn from a physical manifestation of history is a rare one that underscores a foundational pillar of academic learning. It is an opportunity that should not be squandered through some sor t of well-meaning Frankensteinian restoration or adaptation. Like a post-mortem at a body farm, Old Poveglia should be allowed to continue its decay; from a learning standpoint, what good is an old building if we don’t let it get older? The first intervention is a series of soft conical enclosures, straddling the ruins to place the basic learning and living programs of a university in immediate proximity with the artifacts of Poveglia. For the second, rings of r ibboned vaults delineate as-of-yet unprogrammed, hardscaped clearings, allowing the flexible expansion of university programs into outdoor classes and events. Finally, a percentage of the site is left wholly untouched. These are spaces of total possibility—and to be left alone for future occupants of the institution to designate with a function and form. It is through the coordinated deployment of before-ness and after-ness that we fulfill our expectations for our proposed model of a university: the dilation of the now. Whether one waxes nostalgic for buildings of the past, or speculates ambitiously of what might come next, we are ultimately and inexorably trapped in the now—we study and learn in places like Poveglia in hopes that, at best, we might expand our perception of the present. With such an approach, we cease asking, “Why?” and instead we ask, “What then?”
