small bookshop in Tokyo, I have had the dream of bringing something like that back to the eastern shores of Chinatown. This is it. The white gallery "look" of conventional soho galleries is now transformed into the white Polaroid Swinger Model 20, and is my 2012 version of the very first mobile in-camera photograph gallery called G.Y. Conceptually, G.Y. takes a conventional vintage teenager’s camera of the 1960?s and fully utilizes it’s functions, but within a historical context that centers itself firmly within the traditions of photography. First, it is a camera obscura via the micro 4/3rd camera back’s sensor, and then surprisingly it is a reverse camera obscura via the slide viewing function using again the main lens of the camera, which allows this Polaroid Land Camera to mimic the press cameras of old, specifically the Graflex cameras which had the capability to be used as photo darkroom enlargers. Here the Polaroid Land Camera, via two internal lenses, directs the focused image of the transparency into the eye of the viewer, a virtual darkroom. Lastly, the camera’s location is made at once to be of prime importance; It is simultaneously a public open gallery and a recording machine. Thereby the antique camera’s functionality Is not only fully utilized, but it is given a second life. In fact, G.Y.’s design can be varied for early Kodak, Agfa, and other vintage cameras, Hereafter, photographers can use their vintage "unusable" cameras to "re-photo", which is the main task of my modified camera, to take derivative photos of images, in parts, or as a whole, in the tradition of D. Moriyama. I call this type of photography "re-photography". Perhaps it varies slightly from Moriyama’s method by looking for a decisive moment within a photo, and then printing that out onto ordinary xerox paper (as Moriyama has also done) but then utilizing the portrait format of the late 1800?s and early history of photography. Although the history of mementos and personal relics was the driving impulse for the creation of the tiny format over 100 years ago, that era of image-making was entirely done by using a formal portrait style. Now re-photography incorporates it with the copy style of Moriyama. So make it blurry, dark, and intense, but make it also tiny and suffuse it with memory, and when this is cut out of an image which is of similar quality already, then it has been extended, aged, like a beautiful old wine or rare cigar. This tiny intimate format of a derivated image, experienced within the understanding of, and informed by, the traditions of the past, is a re-photo. I will introduce the concept of the "re-photo portfolio" in the next installment.
