Make Your Fishing Buddies Jealous Learn to tie the right type of knot to secure your hook or lure to your fishing line. An improved clinch knot involves inserting the fishing line into the end of the hook or lure, then making 5 turns around the fishing line and passing the line back through the eye of the hook or lure and the first coil of the wound line. A person fishing with bait would be wise to use a bobber or some sort of indicator while fishing. It can be hard to tell when you get a bite at times, and a good indicator will eliminate that problem. Choose one that is easily visible to you on the surface of the water. Decide what type of fish you want to catch, and match all of your equipment to this size and type of fish. For example, your hook size should be able to accommodate the average size of your “target” fish, your bait needs to be the type of bait that naturally attracts this type of fish, and wights and bobbers should be appropriate for the size of the fish and the depth at which it typically swims. When fishing in colder months and especially when ice fishing, wear plenty of layers, and bring spare clothing. You can always remove extra layers, but you can’t put on clothes you didn’t bring. Fishing is often a wet business, and in the cold, wet clothing can be a killer. Swap out wet clothes for dry when you can. To test the sharpness of your hooks, use your fingernails! Just lightly drag the hook across your nails and see if it makes a scratch. If it does, your hook is sharp enough to do its job, but if it doesn’t, you’ll need to either replace the hook or sharpen it again. If you are interested in catching some nice catfish, consider using hotdogs as bait. Believe it or not, catfish love hotdogs. Simply cut off a nice sized portion of the hotdog, push the hook through the hotdog, twist the hook and then push the hook into the hotdog again.

Go fishing early in the morning or in the evening, in order to, avoid the wind. The less windy it is, the more accurately you are able to cast your line exactly where you want it. Additionally, the bugs which the fish feed on are more likely to be active at less windy times, too. Keep safety in mind when you are fishing. Wear a life jacket (and make sure it is fastened) if you are on a boat. Cover yourself with sun screen, if you are out for an extended period of time. Place all sharp items (like knives and hooks) in your tackle box when not in use. In Spring, during the early morning hours fish do not bite. At this time the water is too cold and the sun does not heat it up because the sun is low, the rays simply bounce off of the water. Fish will be biting soon, though. After thaw, wait about a week until the water turns over and the temperature gets up to 39.2 degrees. Stream fisherman would be wise to start their fishing trips downstream, and make their way upstream as the day progresses. This is simply because fish tend to face against the direction of the current. By moving upstream you are lowering your chances of being seen or heard by your prey. Unless you are a young child, there is no excuse not to bait your own hook. Every fisherman must understand this part of fishing, as there is nothing more annoying than being asked constantly to bait someone else’s hook. If you find it inhumane to hook a live worm, asking someone else to do your dirty work isn’t fair. Be patient! When it comes to good fishing, patience really is important. Do not expect to make a
big catch the first hour you are there. Bring something with you to keep you occupied, a radio or a book, if you plan on largemouth bass fishing for a long time. Remember, good things come to those who wait. Observe all proper safety precautions when you fish out of a boat. Wear a life jacket at all times, and make sure you understand how to wear and use it properly. Exercise as much caution as possible. You or someone with you should be thoroughly familiar with the safe operation of your boat. Use salt to keep your salmon egg bait on your hook. A strong current is apt to wash away your fresh salmon eggs. To prevent this, coat all your salmon eggs with ordinary table salt. Do this right before you go fishing, and then use them right away. The salt will give the salmon eggs a rubbery texture, and they will stay on the hook better.

Bass Fishing If you are a fishing novice, your best bet is to go bass fishing. Bass are known to be lured more easily by bait and can be picked up fairly quickly. Even as you progress as an accomplished fisherman, bass fishing still offers its share of fun and challenge because of the good fight a bass can put up when it’s caught.
Bass fishing will revolve around your choice of lure. Choose which lure you use based on the variables of your fishing situation. A different lure is called for at each time of the day and whenever water conditions change. Each lure is designed to bait a specific bass and is to be used in a specific location. In order to figure out which lure is ideal, you may have to try different ones. When fishing for bass, it helps to know as much as possible about the water in the area. If you fish in one location frequently, invest the necessary time in learning where the bass are. Get to know their daily schedule, too, so that you have an idea of when they will appear in a certain place. With bass fishing, it’s crucial that you educate yourself as much as you can.
