Your Questions About Bass Fishing Tips For October

Parking at Half Dome base camp? A friend and I are planning to hike Half Dome soon. Since it’s too late to get camping permits, is it feasible to drive to Half Dome in a minivan, park it at base camp, sleep in the car, and then keep the car at base camp while spending the day hiking? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.
LMBassFish answers: You can find this unhappy statement on the official Yosemite website at http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/where.htm : “Please note that sleeping in your car or RV is not permitted within Yosemite except in individual campsites.” Which is not to say that you absolutely couldn’t get away with it, but it’s a risk. I presume you’ve checked the reservation system already and found it’s all full? If not, call 1-800-436-PARK and give it a try; you never know when there might be a cancellation. Not all the campgrounds in Yosemite are reservation-only. Among the Yosemite Valley

campgrounds, Camp 4, near Yosemite Lodge, is first-come first-serve; the official website says that it usually fills up by 9 am, though, which might be a problem for you. The Bridalveil Creek campground along Glacier Point Road is also first-come, first-serve (you’d have about a 30-mile drive to the Half Dome trailhead the next morning). There are a handful more along the Tioga Road; you can see a list at http://www.nps.gov/archive/yose/trip/nrcamping.htm . Plan on about an hour’s drive to get from Tioga Road campgrounds to the Half Dome trailhead. You could also consider camping outside the park. There’s a list of campgrounds at http://www.yosemitethisyear.com/campgrounds.asp . It’s highly unlikely that all of these will be filled. Summerdale, near Fish Camp, is just outside Yosemite’s south entrance and is probably your closest option; it’s also about a 30-mile drive to Yosemite Valley. It’s popular, but this time of year you might find a spot there. The Bass Lake campgrounds are probably the next closest bet; they’re about 15 miles past Fish Camp. And you could also try getting a motel outside the park. El Portal is only 15 miles or so from Yosemite Valley. When I climbed Half Dome a few weeks ago, some of our party stayed in Oakhurst and drove up the morning of the hike. They say it took about an hour and a half (it turns out there’s not much traffic at 4:30 am). I presume you’re climbing Half Dome fairly soon? The park service often takes the cables down in early October. More info about climbing Half Dome: http://www.yosemitehikes.com/yosemite-valley/half-dome/half-dome.htm Good luck! Russ

what is the best time to catch flounder on shallow inland bays and when?????? i have a 3/4 oz white an blue buck tail jig about 5 or 6 inches long, and plan to tip it with some shrimp. should i use my spinning medium light pole or my heavy action bait casting pole used for bass???? i don’t have a bout so i need to fish from the shore.
LMBassFish answers: October and november probably better to use the medium light. Try around pilons or under bridges they lay there and come out to feed. Move the bait slowly across the bottom. Finger mullett or large minnows work well also.

catching catfish during winter months?

I usually stop fishing for cats after october and focus on hunting but i wanna start fishing for them during the winter and i dont know much about winter fishing at all. Soo where do they lay mainly in rivers and whats the best bait to use during this time of year. Bass tips if u gottem for same reason.
LMBassFish answers: L can tell you about yesterday here in socal. We’ve finally been getting good rain so l went to lake casitas for some catfishing where santa ana creek comes running in. A real good muddy flow. Too thin to plow, too muddy to drink. Found a hole just out of the main current. Just below a point where another creek converged. Cats were eating well. L only got one strike though. That turned into a 6+lb cat. L was REALLY surprised they weren’t biting better but the way the gut was packed on mine they probably just weren’t hungry. Stomach was filled with earthworms, a crawdad and the big chunk of mackerel l was using as bait. Sooo, with the catfish bite not being what l expected, about 2:00 l wandered down to the launching ramp. Had a bass rod in the car rigged with a cinnamon “fat ika” from the previous trip and decided to use it a bit while still soaking mackerel for cats. Out of a total of 6 strikes in a 1 or 1 1/2 hour period, l landed 3 bass from only 5 or 6 feet of water, breaking off my “ika” on the fourth bass (6th strike) and ending my bass fishing for the day. The three came to 11 1/2lb with the largest being 5lb 4oz. Cats still weren’t feeding so l went home. L love fishing in the rain. In muddy water for cats or slightly off color water for bass. This is my winter. About 50 or 60 degrees. L’m sure my answer is in there somewhere.

Lake Casitas Fishing Info? I am going camping/fishing this coming weekend at Lake Casitas in Ventura, CA. Does anyone have any fishing tips. Special spots on the lake or equipment to use. Your help is really appreciated.
LMBassFish answers: A week later, October 2 and 3, the shoreline will be open for night fishing until 11:00. Good for bass at night and usually great for cats this time of year. Use fresh or frozen mackerel for cats. Big plastic worms (10?, black) for the bass. Lf you are shore fishing, there are two fishing docks but one of them is unavailable this coming weekend because of the ongoing pirate faire. Schools of shad are up all over the lake and if you can either dip or snag some of these, they are great bait for bass and the occasional crappie. Casitas has jumbo crappie. Bass and cats will also take nightcrawlers as well as will big redear and monster carp. The shoreline either side of the open fishing dock, near the coyote launching ramp is a decent area. Deeper water is close. Rent a boat and follow Artie around all day and pick his spots apart. Not gonna tell you mine. No trout right now, except from a boat, deep. Topwaters are working very good for the bass right now. Lf someone tells you only early A.M or

late P.M. Don’t believe them. Lt has been an all day long topwater bite on pop-rs and spooks. Just look for bass busting schools of shad and cast right into the middle of the mayhem. Plastic worms have been better for me early and late. Also, slow roll spinnerbaits in 15 to 20 feet of water. L have been locating fish on shallow flats and points with immediate access to deeper water. Just like around that dock and either side of the coyote ramp.
