Your Questions About Best Bait For Bass In Summer

Lizzie asks‌

What is better for freshwater bass, a rubber worm with a jig head or a deep diving lure? I will be fishing up in maine in a few weeks during the summer and I will be spending a lot of time fishing. The lake can get to about 50 feet in the center but I will fish around the 15-20 foot region the most. I will fish in the morning and afternoons mostly. It will be sunny.

LMBassFish answers: Sounds like where I fish .. So.. I do all of the above. Worm along the edge of the weeds, mostly with out weight but texas rigged for water 6ft or deeper.. Then a jig head on a small worm along drop offs and crank baits in open water.

How do i catch bass or walleye from shore? i am going camping in the summer an i want to know all the lures and tactics i need before i go. I have a Shad Rap rs a minnow comet a storm live sunfish. and i am getting a skitter pop and mimic minnow. are these good lures for the shoreline-or do i need a boat.

LMBassFish answers: Bass – Think “top-to-bottom”… Surface lures – skitter pop is good Shallow & middle depths – shad rap, comet minnow Bottom – jigs, plastic worms, etc. “Do it all lures” – these can be worked at any depth…one of my favorites is the Bass Assassin Walleye – Focus on deep areas close to shore and fishing on the bottom Crankbaits – shad rap is good here Jigs – 1/4 oz. Jig head with a twister tail is the “do everything’ lure Live bait – set up 2 rods with bottom rigs and live bait and you’re doubling your chances Hope that helps…visit my website for rigging tips and fishing resources… Freewaterexperience.com

How is the Bass Bite at Big Bear Lake in Southern California? Are the bass biting? Please include good areas of the lake such as the coves, grassbeds, or maybe the bass are holding up to vertical cover like deep timber? Suggestions on lures? I’d appreciate any information to get the most out of my trip.

LMBassFish answers: Below is a site to checkout, about Big Bear lake. It is rather general, but the best I could find. As far as where the bass will be hold, you have to find out for yourself, but I can tell you this, it doesn’t matter where you fish this time of year, the bass will be in the same areas. Water Conditions – The surface layer will be hot, 75 degrees and up. Water clarity will vary from extremely clear to occasionally turbid. Water Depth-In most cases, there are two summertime bass-holding patterns, shallow and deep. Some lakes may only have one pattern while both may exist in other lakes. (2) Shallow Fish – Look for cover such as weeds, moss, overhanging trees, submerged brush, stump beds and boat docks. (3) Deep Fish – Look for sloping main-lake points, humps, islands, underwater

springs, and deep-water structure such as old bridges, roads and submerged fences. NOTE: Headwaters or main tributaries of lakes and reservoirs are top producers during summer months as they often provide both shallow and deep water in one small area and are usually more oxygenated due to inflowing water. The water there may also be cooler. (4) Lure Choices – For shallow water, plastic worms, crank-baits and spinnerbaits will work while topwaters are top producers in and around heavy cover such as pads and brush. For deep water, small plastic worms, tube lures, grubs and small deep-running cranks are top choices. (5) Tactics – For shallow water, early morning, late afternoon and night fishing are best, particularly on clear-water lakes. Plastic worms, dark-colored spinnerbaits or topwaters and buzzbaits tend to be the top nighttime producers. Minnow lures and jerkbaits twitched slowly are often good producers during summertime as well. The Texas-rigged plastic worm, however, has to take top billing, but try the Carolina rig in deep weedbeds and Do-Nothings in spots where a current flows. For deep-water bass, small grubs, worms and tube lures jigged vertically are good producers on sultry days. Jigging spoons worked vertically over underwater humps can also produce bass, although you’ll probably have to fight other species off. The Texas-rigged plastic worm is probably the best choice in deep water, too, but also try working small crankbaits across points and retrieving spinnerbaits deep along bluffs. Try these tips, and I promise a few bass. Have fun and tight lines.

Any suggestions on baits to use for Sand Bass and Halibut here in So Cal? I am wanting to try and fish from the Newport Beach jetties here in So Cal. I am typically a lake fisherman but wanted to start to fish off the jetties this summer to see what i can catch. Any suggestions on baits to use to catch some sand bass or halibut? What type of line will work? I usually use a carolina rig or drop shot rig but not sure what type of set up to use for ocean fishing off the rocks.

LMBassFish answers: A basic freshwater-style baitcasting outfit will work (just make sure you rinse the salt water off it after the fishing trip). Or you can get a saltwater outfit with 15-20 pound line. You can work plastic swimbaits along the bottom near rocks for both bass and halibut. In the ocean you’ll need 1 or 2 ounces of weight to get it down and keep contact with it as you retrieve. You want to bounce them right along the bottom. As far as natural baits, anchovies, sardines, squid, and strips of mackerel will all work. Rig with a reverse dropper loop (sinker on the loop, hook on the tag end), cast the bait out, and work it in slowly. You do not want to fish with a sliding sinker. With a heavier bait the slider will slide up the line as you cast, shortening your cast. And saltwater fish are not scared off by grabbing a bait that’s fastened to a heavy sinker.

What lures for bass should i use on the Susquehanna? Ok so I am going to be taking a fishing trip this summer in the middle of june. I am going to the Susquehana(down in dauphin county) to fish for bass. I was hoping someone out there who has fished this river previously could tell me what works well. I had a couple crank baits, rapala makes, in mind but i wanna know specifically what lure works well, not just general terms like spoons and jigs.

LMBassFish answers: White or white/chartreuse spinnerbaits with tandem gold blades 1/2-ounce rattletraps in chrome and firetiger patterns suspending jerkbaits – blue/chrome/ orange and fire-tiger patterns if there is a big mayfly hatch going on (usually in july, but can come early) use buzzbaits and jitterbugs.
