What is the favorite food of a largemouth bass? Their favorite food, not the best bait for them.

LMBassFish answers: I used to have a large mouth, i feed him mice, blood worms, night crawlers, dubia roaches, pinkies, small fish, and the occasional frog. I later released him into my pond in my yard.

Mark asks…

homemade freshwater largemouth bass bait recipes? I’ve been fishing in this pond by my house for 2 years, and the fish in it are extremely stubborn and picky. The only thing i’ve really had luck with is hot dogs, but they’ve learned to stay away.

Mary asks…

Would live koi in the 8? to 12? range work for bait for big largemouth bass? A friend of a friend has a pretty good sized koi pond that is getting a little on the overstocked side and we’re curious if the smaller ones will work for bait. This is in California and I know transporting live fish to different bodies of water is illegal but we will probably be using them for bait in the friend of a friend’s grandparent’s private pond. I know there are big bass in there, I’ve seen them. Also, can you tell me how to hook them?

LMBassFish answers: Wait a minute, aren’t you the same idiot that wanted to keep a 12 inch white sturgeon in a 55 gallon aquarium with a 10 inch oscar? Or am I thinking of some other satanic soft drink? I think you called me an asshole a couple times. Anyway… Sure. Just be sure to destroy the ones that you DON’T use. Here in California, or anywhere else for that matter, a big bass will eat whatever it can get in its mouth. And here in California, that happens to be 12 to 14 inch rainbow trout and other fish of relatively good eating size. In Florida, guys use 8 to 12 inch golden shiners for bass and those are readily taken. So what the hell, why not a koi! I’m thinking… I’m thinking you could rig them up like you would a live shad or a shiner. Y’know, with a big float or balloon maybe. Tie a heavy wire 6/0 to 8/0 extra-wide-gap worm hook to your main line and attach a big red ‘n white bobber or a filled-with-air water balloon about 2 to 3 feet above the hook. Add another foot or so if you want. Then, take your big hook and run it through the koi’s back ABOVE the spinal cord and backbone, you want to keep it alive for as long as possible… Jabbing the hook into either cord or bone will kill it immediately. Gently lob the carp close to somewhere that looks like it would be holding a big bass. You could also try fly lining it… Just remove the float or balloon and let it swim off on its own. Good luck.

Robert asks…

Would canned sardines (from the store) be used as a bait for largemouth bass or catfish? I am going fishing tommorow, and want to try a different bait. I know the sardines are salty, but I was wondering if I rinse them off a little and use them as bait (let it sit on the bottom of the lake), if they would work well, anyone ever tried?

LMBassFish answers: Lets face it I fished for bass with bread and 2 out of ten it worked, that’s if the bread doesn’t come apart in the water. Canned sardines, depending on the brand, come apart after a while under water, why not try this at home in the sink? Before going fishing. I would try the steak sardines first, I’ve had more luck with them. How about taking your sardines and covering them with the soil that is at hand at your fishing area. First hook your sardines then carefully cover them with the soil or sand which ever it might be to make a ball, doesn’t have to be big, just enough to keep the sardines from coming apart quickly, by the time the soil starts coming apart the fish would have heard, smelled and your bait is still hooked. Works for me.
