Your Questions About Largemouth Bass Fishing Tips

Maria asks…

tips on largemouth bass fishing in SD cali? hi im a begginer when it comes to bass fishing and all i know is that live bait like gold fish and shiners work very well. could some of you pros and more experienced people tip me. im planning on getting a smaller one like 2-6inches for my 650G tank. any help/tips is welcome tyvm!!!!!!!!

LMBassFish answers: Well for live bait shinners and worm work well but it’s illegal to use goldfish as bait but you can use them a feed for bass in a tank ( i think it’s because if the goldfish come off the hook and survive there’s a chance they will take over a lake or pond). For lures i would suggest small crankbaits, and when i fish a farm pond i live by i always catch little blue gill and bass on a little feather jig probably for trout tipped with a little piece of worm. Good luck.

How does a heavy rain affect spawning bass? We have had a good bit of rain the past couple days. How does this affect largemouth bass? make them more active? less active? any tips?

LMBassFish answers: I can answer that. This year we are having record rains during the spawn.Louisiana). The water shoots, up, falls down, shoots up, falls down, and after a warming trend of a few days, the rain lowers the water temps again. Under these conditions, this is the worst spawn I have ever experienced in this state. The constant heavy rains have made them less active, and almost have lockjaw, even on the best of fishing days. So based on that, I would have to say, the heavy rains, are not conducive to good fishing during the spawn. A single day of heavy rain? In about 3 days the bite will be back to normal.

What is the best artificial bait to use for bass in a shallow murky water in June? The pond is surrounded by weeds at the end, and there are a bunch of trees hanging over the water at the front of the pond. There are many small largemouth bass, with a few big ones.

LMBassFish answers: The conditions sound ideal for one of my favorite lures. A Zoom paddle tail worm rigged Texas style and fished weightless. It is retrieved with small twitches of the rod tip with pauses on occasion. They will hit it on the fall at times The beauty of this lure is that it is one of the most weedless lures you can fish with. And the fish seem to prefer it in the shallow stuff. Another favorite that would work well us the Zoom Trick Worm rigged identical to the paddle tail and fished just a bit more slowly with longer pauses at times. When the fish have lock jaw, sometimes this lure will work better.

How do you catch largemouth bass in the early Spring? The pond I’m going to is rather small, less than five acres I believe. The temperature these days tops out at 60 degrees and the pond has a max depth of 5 feet at some spots. The pond also has a wide range of “sunnies” or those relatively small fish which can be found everywhere. Where should I fish? What kind of lures should I use? When should I fish? And any other tips would be much appreciated!

LMBassFish answers: I would fish around cover, trees, stumps, weeds, etc. Those are where the larger bass lie, waiting for a shad or baitfish to just swim above him. Anywhere around cover is a good place for bass by my standards. I would use slow presentations like weight-less wacky rigged worms, jigs, and jerk-baits. Keep it simple, shad, crayfish & bluegill patterns. If it’s really stained water try a chartreuse.

I would fish in the morning, starting out at 6 AM & ending when i feel i should go. Bass bite more at night & morning, and since it’s gonna be ice cold at night, stick w/ mornings.
