2014 Season at Marlboro A PL ACE LIKE NO OTHER

Welcome to Marlboro, and to the 64th summer in which musicians from around the world have gathered on this beautiful hilltop to form a collaborative artistic community.

Drawing by Co-Founder Marcel Moyse

People often ask, with so much changing in our world, how Marlboro continues to provide experiences that mean so much to musicians and audiences alike. Some note the beauty of the countryside, the simplicity of the facilities, and the wonderful isolation from the distractions of everyday life. Others comment on a palpable spirit of generosity, on how our eminent artists explore music from all periods with their younger colleagues in the kind of depth, and with the freedom of time that is so rare today. There is also the caring and supportive family atmosphere, in which children, young adults, and elders share experiences on a daily basis for seven weeks. At the heart of Marlboro is a deep, abiding devotion to music. Chamber music, after all, teaches us to listen, to make multiple voices into one, to be supportive of our colleagues, and to give fully of ourselves—invaluable lessons for life as well as for art. We thank you for joining our community, and for your role in making this a place like no other.

Developing New Musical Leaders A TR ADITION OF SHARING

Marlboro is devoted to inspiring new generations of musical leaders, and to providing artists with the time and conditions necessary to explore masterworks and new repertoire in great depth. The flexible scheduling process at Marlboro allows for virtually unlimited rehearsal times and a sustained and intensive focus on music. Through its high standards and special values, and the leadership of its senior artists, Marlboro continues to have a vital impact on the world of music. The following pages illuminate the Marlboro experience in photos and excerpts of letters from recent young participating musicians.

“Marlboro has been crucial in shaping my musical and personal priorities, and has been the most pivotal part of my development thus far. I have left the last three summers feeling armed for the fall with more integrity, inspiration, and love for music than ever before.

8

Generational Collaborations ARTISTS LE ARN TOGE THER

It is rare, in any field, to find a community where international masters live, work, and socialize with exceptional young professionals, nurturing their talents, guiding their growth, and enjoying their enthusiasm and fresh perspectives. It was at Marlboro where the concept of an experienced artist actually playing in an ensemble with younger colleagues was born. Through this organic, collaborative process, artists with decades of experience performing throughout the world pass on vital insights directly to younger generations who, in turn, inspire them with their fresh ideas. It is an extraordinary act of generosity by our senior artists, who forego paid concert engagements to give of themselves to young artists and sustain the Marlboro ideal.

“The gap between younger and older musicians is bridged on a daily basis... I never expected to have the luxury of eating meals with them. There were so many of these very personal encounters, which have meant so much to me.

10

Unlimited Rehearsal Time TAKING THE TIME TO E XPLORE

Throughout the world today, professional musicians usually rehearse only two or three times in preparation for a performance. Marlboro offers a different model —here, the focus is on discovering and exchanging new perspectives, mastering a work, and getting to the very heart of the composer’s intentions. The artists themselves decide how long to rehearse a piece, and whether to recommend it for performance. The musicians also select the repertoire they explore. The flexibility of the scheduling process, the luxury of unlimited rehearsal time, and the careful balance of singers and instrumentalists allow the artists to play chamber music masterworks, innovative and rarely-heard pieces for unusual instrumentation, and new works prepared under the guidance of resident composers.

“I will always cherish the hours spent rehearsing pieces in incredible depth, something that is truly not possible anywhere else. The more time that passes, the deeper it sinks in just how special and influential the time spent there was.”

12

A Nurturing Community SHARING LIFE E XPERIENCES

Great ensemble playing requires camaraderie, cooperation, and trust. Music is not just the notes, but the expression of human emotions that the composer seeks to convey. Therefore, the family environment at Marlboro—where musicians, staff, spouses, and children share meals, chores, outings, square dances, and other social activities—helps to illuminate the music making. Life experiences as well as musical insights are shared over meals as well as in the rehearsal studio. This closely-knit community also leads to the formation of lifelong friendships and musical bonds among like-minded colleagues from around the world. Throughout the summer, workshops, seminars, informal readings, and other interactions deepen the artistry and broaden the imaginations of our musicians. The beautiful Vermont countryside reinforces the synergy between art and nature. Here, music and life are inseparable.

“The familial sense at Marlboro sets it apart... Being a part of the Marlboro family gave me real confidence in myself as a musician and an individual.”

14

A Vast Impact PA ST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

Marlboro’s founders brought to their new home in this country European musical traditions and a sensibility that were revelations to their young American protégés. In 1951, the Busch, Moyse, and Serkin families and their colleagues established our unique musical community. Musicians who credit Musicians who credit Marlboro as their most important artistic influence include prominent soloists, principals in major orchestras, teachers, and members of the Brentano, Cleveland, Emerson, Guarneri, Johannes, Juilliard, Mendelssohn, St. Lawrence, Takács and Tokyo String Quartets— among many leading ensembles. Today, through her special artistry, vision, and leadership, Mitsuko Uchida is preserving those values and high standards that lie at the heart of this community, while preparing young artists for the world of music in the 21st Century. She and her senior artist colleagues are devoting themselves to nurturing new generations, emphasizing to them the importance of delving deeply into the music, of being honest and self-critical, and of striving to capture the soul of a work. Their mentorship inspired Alex Ross’s depiction of Marlboro, in The New Yorker, as “the classical world’s most coveted retreat.”

“Marlboro connected me to a sacred tradition of artistry and virtue. In a world where so much is unclear, where the genuine hunger for artistic integrity is devalued, Marlboro will always remain with me as a place where it all felt right: where the right end was being sought after.”

16

Sharing the Music “MUSIC BLOOMS AND SHINES HERE...”

When audiences arrive at Marlboro for the opening concert weekend, our artists have been living and rehearsing intensively together for three weeks. Only with such preparation are they ready to suggest works they feel meet the Marlboro standard. The concerts allow them to reveal what they have discovered and to share their passion with others. Yet, all of the works performed here each summer comprise just one-fourth of the more than 250 pieces that are explored. Marlboro shares its music-making in other ways. The Musicians from Marlboro national touring program, celebrating its 50th Anniversary in the 2015-2016 season, has offered wonderfully varied programs performed by young artists who have gone on to become major musical figures. Monthly email newsletters include recent and historic performances, which can also be heard on radio broadcasts, and on SONY, Bridge and ArkivMusic releases. Our website, at www.marlboromusic.org with a database of works and artists heard at Marlboro since 1951, is a valuable resource for anyone interested in chamber music. Please see the Reception Desk for a list of recordings available for sale, and to join our email list.

“Where else on earth can a group rehearse the 15-minute Mozart Oboe Quartet for four weeks!? The ideas, not only in that group but in all of them, never stop. It’s a gathering of some of the finest, and perhaps just as important, most curious group of musicians in the world.”

2014/15 TOUR SCHEDULE Group I: October 11 - 19, 2014

SHARING THE MARLBORO SPIRIT

The spirit of Marlboro continues throughout the year—not only in our memories of Vermont and the inspiration of our musicians, but on concert hall stages across the country. Each season, from October through May, some of the most compelling performances from the summer are brought to larger audiences, through the Musicians from Marlboro national touring program. The tour concerts bring thoroughly prepared masterpieces and exciting new repertoire to larger audiences in three-concert series in Boston; New York City; Greenwich, CT; Philadelphia; and Washington D.C., and in single concerts in other communities. They provide broad exposure for our young musical leaders who, in the Marlboro fashion, play together with master artists. Please pick up a schedule of our 2014-15 Musicians from Marlboro season in the Auditorium lobby. If your home city does not yet host a tour concert, perhaps you can help make that possible. Please contact Frank Salomon or Michael Herring on the Marlboro staff to share your ideas.

“It not only taught me the basics of touring, it showed me how to bring the highest musical values to an audience that is being increasingly deprived of the deeply thoughtful and expressive musicmaking which is the hallmark of Marlboro.”

EDUCATION FOR A CHANGING WORLD

Collaboration is at the heart of our programs. Marlboro College is a proud host of the internationally renowned Marlboro Music School and Festival. After more than six decades together we celebrate its success in keeping the chamber music tradition vital and providing a rare setting for musicians to rehearse and perform together. Our past and futures are intertwined, but we have more in common than a shared history and these beautiful surroundings. Both “Marlboros” believe in inspired teaching and learning that depends on motivation, curiosity, and discipline. At the college, as at the Music School, serious learners work collaboratively with those whose deep knowledge and experience both broaden and deepen their skills.

How do we prepare students for our global world? •

For adults who seek to learn and to improve their careers, Marlboro College offers graduate degrees and certificates in teaching, management, and technology in the downtown Brattleboro Center for Graduate and Professional Studies. We welcome musicians and audience members to Marlboro College, a haven for discovery and creativity, in the summer and all year round. Ellen McCulloch Lovell President, Marlboro College

Students design their own course of study, usually interdisciplinary, advised by their teachers. They are challenged in small classes and one-on-one tutorials.

• We encourage students to seek what sets their minds on fire and provokes the creativity and global perspective, which are intrinsic to our mission. • Every Marlboro student must master clear writing; we believe it leads to clear thinking. • Through our “radically traditional” approach, we create high expectations that students live up to as they own their own educations.

Why are we committed to a “liberating arts” education at a time when so many are concerned about their economic futures? •

Employers confirm that the skills we teach— critical thinking, creative problem-solving, clear expression, teamwork, and historical and cultural context—are the best preparation for the vocations of today and the future.

Studying the liberal arts leads to understanding what it means to be human and how to keep learning in a changing and interconnected world. This wide-ranging study of the arts, humanities, social sciences and the sciences liberates the student’s potential.
