Chinese GCSE (AQA 8673)

Studying Mandarin GCSE opens up many professional opportunities for the future. Pupils will be taught over the next two years to understand and express themselves in Mandarin, both orally and on paper. They will develop particular study skills which are valuable for further study at A level.

Core content:

Pupils study all of the following themes on which the assessments are based:

Identity and culture Me, my family and friends Technology in Everyday life Free-time activities Customs and festivals in Chinese-speaking countries/community

Local, national, international and global areas of interest Home, town, neighbourhood and region Charity/voluntary work Healthy/unhealthy living The environment Poverty/homelessness Travel and tourism

Current and future study and employment My studies Life at school/college Education post-16 Jobs, career choices and ambitions

Assessments:

Pupils will take four papers, each of which is worth 25% of the final marks:

Paper 1: Paper 2: Paper 3: Paper 4: Listening – 45 minutes Speaking – 10–12 minutes + preparation time Reading and Translation – 1 hour Writing and Translation – 1 ¼ hours
