We use only the finest clay to make our biscuit, onto which we carefully apply 3 coats of glaze in an array of carefully researched colours. Each glaze is individually mixed; we select from over 50 raw pigments and stains, expertly combining them to create the exact nuance of shade we seek.

It is a real skill to have the ability to hand paint on to tiles, a carefully practised process to deliver a consistent result every time. This makes all our tiles of such a high standard that very few people can match. Each tile is hand signed on the reverse, checked for any imperfections that may affect the design before being prepared for despatch.

Our glazed wall tiles are all designed, crafted and made here in Wiltshire at our factory on the bank of the river Kennet in the idyllic market town of Marlborough. Our factory produces most tiles to order, through a carefully monitored process ensuring consistent quality of finish and design.

The business was started in1936 by Misses Packard & Ord, then schoolteachers at Bath college. They initially specialised in commissions and giftware, with much work coming via word of mouth, and customers ranging from Royalty to Public Houses. Queen Mary was a regular customer. Their hand painted work was hallmarked ʻPOʼ (Packard & Ord) on the front of the tile and examples can still be found today in the V&A museum, private collections and, of course, on walls across the world.

HISTORY After the war in 1945, Miss Packard retired, Miss Ord moved to Marlborough and the Robb family bought into the business, re-naming it Marlborough Tiles. The hallmark was changed to ʻORʼ (Ord & Robb) at this time and the focus of the business changed to making mainstream fireplace, kitchen and bathroom wall tiles in addition to our highly successful giftware. Our many outlets included Libertyʼs, Heals, Harrods and the Medici Society. Miss Ord retired in 1961 leaving a wonderful archive containing a plethora of exquisitely hand-drawn and painted decors, which further generations of our ceramic artists have continued to add to, some of which are illustrated opposite. Marlborough Tiles was now wholly-owned by the Robb family and brothers Alastair and David Robb took over the reigns. Renowned Marlborough designs from this period include ʻSnowflakeʼ, ʻTulip Bordersʼ, ʻLeapfrogsʼ and ʻRelief Fruits & Animalsʼ.

PASSION FOR TILE MAKING

In 2000, Jamie Robb, took over as MD from his father Alastair, changing the hallmark to ʻMTʼ (Marlborough Tiles) to mark the millennium. And so it is that, unique to Marlborough Tiles, the hallmark enables our tiles to be dated to the period in which they were painted, thereby contributing to their intrinsic value over the years as ʻcollectorʼs itemsʼ.

A UNIQUE HAND PAINTED DESIGN TO CELEBRATE HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II DIAMOND JUBILEE

In the Summer of 2012 Mayor Edwina Fogg approached Jamie Robb, MD, Marlborough Tiles to propose the designing and production of a large and striking exhibit to commemorate Her Majesty The Queensʼ Diamond Jubilee.

In designing the mural it was decided to reflect the long history of the town of Marlborough and the local landscape, flora and fauna.

The process began by photographing historic buildings and street scenes in and around the town and landmarks in the surrounding countryside. Ceramic artist Jenny then took these elements to create a montage of images representing Marlborough past and present – you will see the Town Hall and Churches, Wilton Windmill, the Kennet and Avon canal, Silbury Hill and the ancient Savernake Forest to name but a few. Once the design was agreed, three ceramic artists from Marlborough Tiles working together brought their expertise to different areas of the mural. Jenny painted the large colour images of the town and surrounding area, Kirsty painted the Royal Coat of Arms and Helen designed and painted the delicate calligraphy. The Mural was painted directly onto the unfired glaze using the traditional majolica technique – a bit like painting on blotting paper, ʻa right first time processʼ.

As with all tiles from the factory, each tile is hand signed on the back and hallmarked, with every design painted to order. This level of exceptional quality takes years of training and skill. The mural took over five weeks of concentrated effort before the final work was completed and fired.

INTRICATE CALLIGRAPHY

The finished mural was officially unveiled on the 19th October 2012 by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall, with the Mayor of Marlborough and invited guests. The mural was presented to the town outside the town hall, with many people taking the opportunity to see the mural for the first time. The mural is positioned in Marlborough town hall for future generations to admire and enjoy.

We often see herons fishing in the crystal clear water and our artists and captured the elegance and grace of these stunning birds in two 6 tile panels. The high moorlands of Britain are home to the Black Grouse shown here at their most majestic during the spring mating season.

The information provided below aims to help you select the tiles most suited to your application.

We have worked hard on the presentation of the product in this brochure, but the truth is that no reproduction can capture the precise colour and texture of each individual tile. We therefore urge you to visit a showroom where you can see the inherent beauty of these tiles first hand. If you are unable to visit a showroom, please call us to order samples, for which a small charge will be made. We sell our products through our Marlborough showroom and an extensive network of Recommended Tile Retailers across the country. EXPORT SALES We have experience in exporting all over the world and our in-house wall collections can now be seen in a growing list of countries including Ireland, France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Russia, Japan, Italy, Israel, Norway and Sweden. DELIVERIES We deliver to our network of Recommended Tile Retailers on a weekly basis or can deliver to your door, both of which incur a small charge. Whilst we endeavour to hold all tiles other than hand painted designs in stock, occasionally there are delays in production. In addition our hand painted designs are painted to order and therefore you should allow up to a further 3 weeks for delivery. Please bear this in mind when booking a tiler as we do not accept responsibility for lost working time in the event of a delivery being incorrect, damaged or delayed. By prior arrangement, orders can be also be collected from our factory in Marlborough. Whilst we endeavour to ensure that all orders are correctly packed, occasionally errors do occur. RETURNS / ADDITIONS Installed tiles and hand painted tiles are non-returnable. Full boxes of other tiles may be returned within 4 weeks of order, but there will be a 20% restocking charge, so we urge you to measure carefully. As our tiles vary from batch to batch, it is advisable to keep extra in case replacements are required at a future date. For the same reason, please advise us if you are adding to a previous order so that we can do all possible to get the closest match.The customer will have the right to return all goods if they are not happy with their selection. The goods must be returned unbroken in the original packaging to retailer or direct to us and the customer will be responsible for the cost of arranging transport and insurance of goods. This must be done within 28 days of receiving the order. Refunds will be processed within 5 working days following our receipt of the return, original delivery costs will not be refunded. Tiles delivered to the customer damaged will be replaced / refunded in full.

APPEARANCE WALL TILE COLLECTIONS Our tiles are hand crafted and hand painted and are, as such subject to minor colour variation both within the batch and from batch to batch, Where possible, tiles should be laid out prior to fixing or taken randomly from several boxes to allow for blending of any shade variation. Over a period of time ceramic tiles may craze which should be considered a characteristic rather than an imperfection of this type of tile.The surface of our hand crafted tiles may vary in the degree of undulation from batch to batch. Tiles may not be perfectly square due to uneven shrinkage in firing. GLASS WALL COLLECTIONS Glass is subject to minor colour variation and can be prone to scratching so is best used in wall areas not subject to surface abrasion. It has excellent stain and water resistant properties.

SPECIFICATION The dimensions listed throughout the brochure may be subject to minor inaccuracies and are given as a guide only. The number of tiles supplied per metre is dependent on the size of grout joint recommended. When calculating the number of tiles required for your project, please allow 7.5-10% extra for cutting and wastage. FIXING & SEALING We strongly recommend that you use a tile fitter experienced in fitting specialised tiles. Before commencing any work, we recommend that you and

your fitter read our Product Information sheet, available on www.marlboroughtiles.com In particular we draw your attention to the importance of surface preparation prior to tiling, checking the tiles prior to fixing to ensure there are sufficient and that they are correct, sealing the tiles where recommended, and finally, protecting the newly laid tiles from ongoing work in the vicinity. WALLS Grout joint - we recommend a grout width of around 3-5mm for the wall tile collections in this brochure. For our 13x13 wall tile collections we suggest laying out tiles and butting them together to ascertain grout width before tiling. Our tiles should be laid by eye and not using spacers, halving any size difference. A wet cutter should be used. Crackle glaze sealer - our Contemporary Classics, Vintage, Posterity, Cool Companions and Simplicity collections have a crackle glaze and require sealing with Marlborough Tiles Crackle Glaze Sealer. Tiles to be cut must be sealed prior to cutting. All other tiles must be sealed after fixing.

Glass - glass tiles must be cut with a diamond blade designed for cutting glass rather than a ceramic blade that will chip them. White adhesive with a flexi-additive should be used and applied evenly all over the back of the tile.
