Preschool’s measle warning as child falls ill Paula Hulburt A sick pre-schooler is being tested for measles amid fears the outbreak has reached Marlborough.

The youngster, who attends a Blenheim preschool, fell ill displaying some of the symptoms of the potentially deadly illness.

Test results are expected back later this week.

Nelson Marlborough District Health Public Health have sent an advisory letter to all parents with children at the preschool, warning them of the possibility.

Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service’s Medical Officer of Health Dr Andrew Lindsay warned the disease is difficult to contain.

“This is the biggest outbreak in more than 20 years, with more than 800 cases to date.

“This is a serious, life-threatening disease that is very, very difficult to contain – as we’re seeing in Auckland.”

The virus, which spreads through the air is very infectious.

Keeping suspected cases in isolation is key, says Dr Lindsay.

“The last case of measles in our region was in November 2018, unrelated to the current outbreak.

Staff across the region are taking no chances when it comes to ruling out the potentially deadly disease.

There were a total of 16 suspected cases Nelson and Marlborough in September bringing the total number of suspected cases notified by GPs to the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service for 2019 to 38.

Nelson Marlborough is one of just four district health boards across the country to be currently measles-free.

Programmes Manager – clinical services and integration, Marlborough Primary Health Organisation Glenis McAlpine says that the isolation of any measles cases is critical.

Parents need to be vigilant and check their children’s Well Child immunisation record (Plunket book) to see if their child is immunised.

If in doubt, they should call their GP or practice nurse to check their immunisation status, he says.

“Children and adults need to have had two doses of the MMR vaccine to be fully immunised, but one dose of MMR provides 95 per cent protection,” says Dr Lindsay.

Bullied teen’s film features his childhood tormentors Paula Hulburt Editor

They once bullied him, now their victim has included his tormentors in a film to help stop others suffering the same fate.

Blenheim filmmaker and director Tyler Redmond, 16, was first bullied at the age of 5 years old.

Making films helped with the trauma and now his latest film, Rise Up, is set to help others going through similar situations.

But it’s not been an easy path to follow, he says.

“Instead of helping just one person in a schoolyard, I’m trying to help others on a national level.”

The young director credits his dad, Christchurch motorsport driver Stan Redmond, 65, as the force behind his will to succeed.

Stan died in 2013 following a crash at Invercargill’s Teretonga Park.

“I think I’m so driven because of him. I was nine years old when my dad passed away.

“He was very driven and knew

what he wanted, what he wanted to achieve.

“My mum’s also been very supportive and has been with me every step of the way,” he says.

It includes characters played by two boys who once bullied Tyler.

He says while he was “hesitant” at first to include them, he made an unbiased decision.

“I’d put a call out for cast, and they showed up.

“I was a bit wary, a bit hesitant at first. They remembered me but didn’t realise I was making the film. They were a bit embarrassed.

“I got talking to one of them and he apologised for what he’d done.”

Tyler says.

Bullying affects nearly one-half of primary-aged children in New Zealand schools and a third of secondary students.

Tyler hopes his film will help both bullies and victims.

He says the dominance of social media in young people’s lives is putting people at risk.

Honour for construction leader Helping tackle Marlborough’s accommodation crisis has seen a Blenheim businessman take out a top industry honour.

Clarke and Haack Construction are the driving force behind the idea, development and build of St Andrews Seasonal Worker accommodation complex in Blenheim.

Co-owner Ant Clarke was

named Professional of the Year at the fifth annual Southern Excellence Awards in Christchurch on Friday night.

Judges say his accomplishment was a “significant achievement” with positive implications for the rest of the country.

“Ant’s vision to purpose-build RSE accommodation, his forward-thinking implemen-

tation, leadership and meticulous management has benefitted the wider Marlborough community and the property and construction industry.

“Ant has also become further involved in helping to address Marlborough’s social housing needs through work with the Ministry for Social Housing and Urban Development.”

Council secures land for library and gallery Chloe Ranford Local democracy reporter

The last piece of a land jigsaw puzzle has fallen into place for a much-anticipated library and art gallery project in Blenheim.

The Marlborough District Council has purchased the land occupied by the old Liquorland building, close to the amphitheatre at the end of High St, from the Millennium Art Gallery Foundation Trust.

It comes after the $20 million project, first mooted in 2009, was delayed by water projects, land ownership hurdles and a slower than expected design stage.

Marlborough Mayor John Leggett says the new "stand out" building could be a "game changer" for foot traffic in and around Blenheim's central business district.

"I've always had the vision to revitalise that part of town, which is concentrated around the river area ... I see that as quite important," Leggett says.

"It's a building that's going to be a real stand out. We need to be prepared, with social structures like this, to put in the time, effort and funding into them."

The project made it to the last round of the 2015 long-term plan as part of a $23m revitalisation of the town centre that included the

now-completed Quays riverside park, beside the amphitheatre.

But the earmarked funds were instead funnelled into water schemes in Renwick, Havelock and Seddon.

The council revisited the project in last year's long-term plan, and proposed the current library and art gallery be replaced as part of its 'Investing in Infrastructure' plans.

Concept designs were expected to be available for public viewing later this year, but lead project architect Richard McGowan says the two-storey building would face north and take advantage of the "fantastic" view over the Wither Hills.

"The first floor is a shared lobby with a cafe on one side, and a lobby space on the other side.

Behind that space is a gallery," McGowan says.

"Then people can go upstairs and see the [Taylor] river and [Wither] hills to the north ... It's a room where people can read stuff and look at the view."

There would be a "clear" distinction between the library and art gallery, but not so much that the two looked "like part A and part B", McGowan says.

"Whether you're a library person or a gallery person, the fact that the two are in the same building

School fair: Linkwater School will be holding its popular spring fair on Saturday. For around 25 years the fun day has helped people get ready for summer with vegetable seedlings, fruit plants, flowers, some fruit trees and other plants. High rise apartment plan in jeopardy Matt Brown

Plans to tackle Blenheim’s growing number of empty shops by building town centre apartments have met with mounting opposition.

Consents to turn the second and fourth levels of the Porse building, on Market St North, into eight residential apartments are being considered by council.

But stiff opposition from surrounding businesses means the plans may be scrapped before the project even gets started.

A bevy of Market St businesses expressed their opposition to the inner-city apartments at a hearing at council last week.

Concerns of ‘reverse sensitivity’, increased traffic and the removal of car parking and loading zones were put forward by former deputy mayor and owner of the Biddy Kate’s Irish Bar Terry Sloan.

Several other businesses have joined Terry’s official objection, causing the consenting process to grind to a halt while a hearing in front of the council’s resource hearings commissioner was held.

In his initial submission, Terry says he was worried the normal operating noise of the bar and cafe could spark complaints.

A bar has been operating in the Criterion building for more than 100 years.

The apartments at the Porse building, ranging in floor area from 62 square metres to 110 square metres, have been in the pipeline for building owners TH Barnes & Co since late last year.

Consents show vacant shop frontage on the street could be converted to a car parking garage and storage for each of the units.

The car parking garage entrance would require the loading zone on the street to be moved or removed. In evidence submitted to council, TH Barnes & Co Ltd director Jason Barnes says they had to reconsider the best way to utilise the building.

“Development of large format retail centres outside of the Central Business District such as the Westwood development in Springlands and a Mitre 10 store in Redwoodtown, has resulted in empty shop space in the town centre,” Jason says.

“Shop space in our building has suffered particularly badly due to its location on the periphery of the Central Business District.”

Dear Ed, Will and I own an eco retreat and multiday expedition tour company called Driftwood Eco Tours.

We were looking for ways to reduce our waste and came across a neat little filter system called a Filtrol. It is easy to hook onto your home washing machine, it filters out a majority of the nylon micro particles in our wash so they will not end up in our waterway and eventually the sea. It is not the be all and end all, however our moto at Driftwood is small steps can make big gains!

We purchased it online from the USA. It cost us $229.23 US and included postage and we added a spare filter bag.

We think it is a great way to reduce our impact on the marine environment, for those who can afford it.

Here are some tips on free ways you can reduce your micro fibre waste, people might like to try a few of these to make a difference.

Wash synthetic clothes less frequently and for a shorter duration.

Fill up your washing machine. Washing a full load results in less friction between the clothes and fewer fibres released.

Consider switching to a liquid laundry soap. Laundry powder “scrubs” and loosens more microfibers.

Use a colder wash setting. Higher temperature can damage clothes and release more fibres.

Ideally line dry or dry spin clothes at low revs. Higher revolutions increase

When you clean out your dryer, place lint in the trash instead of washing it down the drain.

Avoid purchasing cheaply-made, “fast fashion” clothes, whenever possible, also they tend not to last.

Buy clothes made from natural fibres such as wool, cotton and linen when possible. Buying merino wool also supports our local traditional farming families. Natural fibres will eventually break down in the environment. Plastic fibres will never go away.

We are not saying we are pure as snow, just doing our best to make small gains for nature and want to share the word.

Tasman made the most of home course advantage to pull off a history-making victory in the South Island Interprovincial golf championships on Sunday.

For the first time, Tasman were crowned South Island champions, shading golfing powerhouse Canterbury by half a point during a gripping final day on the Marlborough Golf Club course at Fairhall.

The competition involved eightperson teams from Tasman, Aorangi, Otago and Canterbury doing battle on Saturday and Sunday in a match play format.

Each player contested two games each on Saturday and one on Sunday.

Tasman met Otago first up on Saturday, followed by Canterbury in the afternoon, then Aorangi on Sunday morning.

After the three rounds were concluded Tasman, Canterbury and Aorangi finished with two points each. Tasman beat Otago 6-2, Aorangi 7-1 and lost 3-5 to Canterbury.

However, Tasman won on a countback of individual games, having won 16 times, compared with Canterbury’s 15.5 and Aorangi’s 10. Otago finished without a win.

In the end the result came down to two matches which were decided on the final hole.

Stenhouse was thrilled to come out on top and said neither she nor Boyce knew that the overall result hinged on their final holes against Aorangi.

“We weren’t sure that we needed to win on the 18th … we were just excited that we had won our

matches, then someone told us that we had won overall, so that was pretty cool.”

Tasman have been competing in the prestigious event, which began in 1986, for the past nine years.

Stenhouse said she had no doubt home course advantage played a big part in the result.

“Just knowing the course helps and we had a few supporters down there too, club members and others from around the area.

“It’s a great team. We all get on amazingly well and we have a good team culture.”

The Tasman senior women’s team which won the SI title (in playing order): Lizzie Neale (Nelson), Eve Clarke (Nelson), Emily Stenhouse (Marlborough, captain), Amber Boyce (Awatere), Tracy Bary (Rarangi), Aroha Minhinnick (Rarangi), Jean Gibson (Karamea) and Michelle Reardon (Nelson).

vincial team was named to compete in Napier in the first week of December. That team is: Lizzie Neale (Nelson), Eve Clarke (Nelson), Emily Stenhouse (Marlborough), Amber Boyce (Awatere), Tracy Bary (Rarangi). Travelling reserve: Aroha Minhinnick.

Stenhouse said their win at the weekend will allow them to travel north with renewed confidence.

“We are all feeling like we can pull off wins against whoever we come across now.”

Mako women bow out in Dunedin Peter Jones Despite being well beaten in their final game of the season the Tasman Mako women’s side have made “massive strides”, according to head coach Chris Binns.

Tasman were beaten 64-10 by the Otago Spirit side in a Farah Palmer Cup championship semifinal at Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday.

Binns said that while his charges had not played to their full potential they had come up against a very good side, who he feels will go on to take out the title.

Otago had too much pace out wide for Tasman and scored five first-half tries to lead 35-0, then added another touchdown soon after the break.

Tasman then managed to build some pressure of their own and were rewarded with two second half tries, to Sydnee

Wilkins and Rebecca Kersten.

Otago first five-eighth Rosie Kelly had a big game, scoring two tries and drilled seven conversions in a 24-point haul.

For Tasman, debutante Jess Harvey, just 16, impressed off the bench, as did the propping duo of Louise Nalder and Paris Hart, plus loose forward Hannah Beech also turned in a solid shift.

Winger Kersten was outstanding, as was Wilkins and midfielder Jess Drummond.

Binns suggested his side may have played their semi-final the previous week, when they beat North Harbour in a quarterfinal.

“That meant a lot to them, to actually make the semi, and maybe today was just a step too far, at the moment.

“We were a little flat to start with and built into the game, but we were well and truly outplayed.”

The loss of key players Wai Greig and

Pippa Andrews through injury did not help Tasman’s cause but their team mates stepped up.

“They were naturally disappointed to lose today but are a really good bunch and the most were happy with their season,” said Binns.

“We have made some massive strides this year, now the challenge for us as a management group is to put some planning in place that allows them to take bigger steps next year.”

A major plus for the Tasman side was the opportunity to play under the roof at Forsyth Barr. “The girls loved that,” he added.

“The facilities were amazing, it’s not every day that you get to play in such a facility.”

On remaining positive: “It felt like we spent most of the first half on defence , but it was about keeping that belief … knowing that if we could get some ball and string some phases together we would be able to put some pressure back on them.”

Mako vice-captain Quinten Strange on their first half efforts: “We just took a while to react to a bit of adversity early on … we never quite got our game going, which is credit to Auckland who put us under pressure there.

“The lads had faith, we were always connected, we just needed a couple of moments and we managed to get that.

On his try: “Right place, right time I guess, just backing up and Uci [halfback Keisuke Uchida] was there doing his job.”

On the input from the bench: “You are never going to win a title with just 15 players, it’s the whole squad, even the guys that aren’t playing.”

On keeping the faith: “We said at halftime that we just had to keep believing that things were going to happen for us. Don’t panic … and that’s how it unfolded in the end. As the old saying goes, ‘it’s an 80-minute game’ and we had to play for 80 this week. We can take a lot of confidence into next week. It’s tough to beat Auckland at any time so we will just enjoy this one and prepare the best we can for next weekend.”

On the crowd: “We love playing in Blenheim and I just want to say thank you very much to the Blenheim faithful for coming out and supporting us. We have got one more hurdle to get over next week so hopefully they can come over the hill on Saturday.”

Mako vice-captain Mitch Hunt: “Discipline was an issue early on, we gave away a lot of penalties for various reasons and that put a dampener on the start of the game … we just couldn’t get into it.

“We pride ourselves on our defence and other teams have to score tries to beat us … so even if teams are kicking goals we are still calm.

“It is just a game of moments … like a fisherman, you are not going to catch anything is your line’s not in the water so when opportunities present themselves you need to be ready.

“Finals game are not always pretty, it’s about the team that wins the most of those moments.”

Tasman to host Lions in NPC final Peter Jones

Tasman booked their ticket to the 2019 Mitre 10 Cup premiership final with a gritty display at Lansdowne Park on Saturday.

Their 18-9 victory over a feisty Auckland side who brought their ‘A’ game to Blenheim means the Mako earn the right to host the premiership decider at Nelson’s Trafalgar Park this weekend.

Standing between them and their first premiership title will be the Wellington Lions, who downed Canterbury 30-19 in the capital on Saturday evening.

Many pundits felt the Mako would find themselves up against their Crusaders region rivals in the final, but the Lions had other ideas, going out to an early lead then holding on against the inevitable Canterbury resurgence.

Wellington are a very dangerous opponent. The Mako beat them 45-8 in the opening round of the competition but, as was the case with Auckland who were also well beaten in round robin play, that result means nothing come play-off time.

The Lions are unpredictable - favouring unstructured, almost chaotic situations and have quality players capable of ripping defences apart.

Ball-playing forwards such as Asafo Aumua, Alex Fidow, Vaea Fifita, skipper du’ Plessis Kirifi and Teariki Ben-Nicholas possess both power and pace while Jackson Garden-Bachop, Peter Umaga-Jensen, Billy Proctor, Ben Lam, Wes Goosen and Vince Aso are as dangerous a backline unit as there is in the competition.

However, Wellington’s Achilles Heel is often their discipline and set piece consistency, areas I am sure the Mako coaches will be focussed on in the lead-up to the final.

Tasman may have bought their ticket to the “big dance”, but they paid a hefty price for it.

A lack of serious injuries has been a feature of the Mako campaign this year, but the rugby gods were definitely not smiling on Saturday.

The early loss of key loose forwards Ethan Blackadder and his replacement Jordan Taufua put the Mako on the back foot. If both are ruled out for the final that will impact the home side’s ability to bring big-match experience off the bench. They may also be without the elusive Will Jordan who limped from the field later in the match with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.

However, it was the team’s ability to handle adversity that saw Tasman through against Auckland and the Mako selectors have showed time and again that they have faith in their entire squad.

Co-head coach Andrew Goodman once again praised the efforts of his bench players against Auckland, despite the two early injuries affecting his replacement plans.

“One of our strengths has been being able to bring those guys on later in the game when teams are starting to tire, but I thought our ‘Sparkies’ still did an awesome job today,” said Goodman.

“That group of four or five that came on with about 20 [minutes] to go really changed the game.”

Pivotal to that situation was young forward Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta who replaced Taufua after 20 minutes. Usually called on as a lock, he turned in an inspirational effort on the side of the scrum, his defence being a highlight.

But ultimately their success on Saturday was based on relentless defence. Given the weight of position and possession Auckland enjoyed they should have been 10 points or more clear at half-time.

Instead they trailed at the break, unable to breach the red and blue wall. As it has done throughout the season, Tasman’s structured and scrambling defence continually denied their opponent, creating frustration and uncertainty.

It will have to be on point again this weekend but, as they showed on Saturday, this Mako side certainly knows how to dig deep.

Now, in the union’s 14th year of existence, the Mako have a chance to make history.

coaster ride since the province’s humble beginnings in 2006, but the opportunity is there to sit proudly atop New Zealand provincial rugby, a remarkable situation to contemplate in such a short time frame.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. When Tasman previously tasted NPC success, in the 2013 championship final, it was the boisterous home town crowd who provided the extra impetus which got the Mako over the line.

The 5618-strong crowd’s involvement in Saturday’s semi, both during the contest and on the field after the game, was superb.

The players and management relish it, knowing it puts wind under their wings.

Softballers start season with slight shift in venue Peter Jones Reporter

The Marlborough softball season officially got underway on Saturday.

Teams gathered at Lansdowne Park for a series of game to kickstart the 2019-20 season. With the council doing drainage work at the moment near the established softball diamond on the northern side of the stop bank, games will be played until further notice on the fields between the Central Rugby Club and the back of the main western stand.

Marlborough Softball Association chairperson Bruce Walker says the under-7 competition is expected to comprise at least 13 teams, six sides will make up the under-9 grade, four teams will compete in the under-11/13 grade and there is one team confirmed for the under-15 grade at this stage, although they are still finalising the age groups.

Muddy good fun: Bohally riders Finn McKenzie, left, and Lachlan McNabb relished the damp, muddy conditions to dominate the year 7-8 boys’ grade at the Marlborough primary school mountainbiking championships on Friday.

The annual event, organised by Seddon School, was staged at Richmond Brook Station and involved 230 riders from a variety of Marlborough schools, a far cry from the inaugural event eight years ago which saw just 100 riders in action.

This year they competed in boys’ and girls’ sections across year 3-4, year 5-6 and year 7-8 age grades.

The younger riders covered one lap of a 2.5km circuit, which took riders across farm tracks and paddocks, through a creek and up various hills. The year 5-6 riders rode two laps while the older riders raced over three circuits.

McKenzie took out the senior boys’ title in a time of 21 minutes eight seconds, with McNabb 32 seconds further back.

Angus Kopua was third.

Seddon School principal Tania Pringle said the steady rain did little to dampen the spirits of the riders.

“There’s nothing like a little bit of mud to put smiles on some faces,” she added.

Premier tennis underway Peter Jones The Wine Brokers NZ premier tennis competition kicked off on Wednesday under a slightly-different format this season.

Four six-strong teams will contest the premier grade this time around, two from the Rapaura club and one each from Marlborough and Renwick.

A close competition is in prospect if the opening exchanges were anything to go by. Two very tight matches kicked the season off, both coming down to the final match.

In the first game Marlborough Forrest Wines defeated Rapaura Wairau Noir 5-4.

Rapaura made a promising opening, winning both of the men’s doubles. Hamish McRae and Hugh Robinson defeated Oscar Parkinson and Jay Geris 6-4, 6-2 while Glen Cameron and Adrian Bryant downed Owen Dobson and Pete Stubbs 6-3, 7-6.

Marlborough claimed the mixed with Phil Sowman and Sandy Stubbs defeating Tony Fenemor and Eveline Apthorp 6-4, 6-4.

In the men’s singles Parkinson was too consistent for McRae, wining 6-1, 6-3 but Robinson grabbed the number two singles for Rapaura, winning 6-3, 6-4 over Geris.
