Emergency response truck a life saver WILLIAM WOODWORTH

william@topsouthmedia.co.nz

A new major incident emergency response truck means Marlborough’s first responders are even better prepared in a crisis. Marlborough’s first responders

feel better prepared than ever with the delivery of their new $300,000 Major Incident Support Team (MIST) truck. The move means the region now has a quick set up field hospital and emergency response kits in an all-in-one truck.

Hato Hone St John’s Tasman Operations Manager Murray Neal, and MIST team members Phil Grigg and Dave Parsons says the truck has everything on hand for a major incident. “It’s a serious upgrade from the kit we had available beforehand

and makes us feel more capable and secure in our emergency responses. “MIST vehicles are consistent across the country, so first responders have everything they need for any major incident on hand,” says Murray.

“It allows for easy training and deployment wherever necessary being able to handle more people, lighting, tents and supplies in the field for whatever reason it may be needed.

The giving spirit is well and truly underway at Kmart, who are collecting gifts for Blenheim’s Salvation Army. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Kmart’s popular Wishing Tree Appeal and the fifth time the Marlborough store has taken part. Helping bring joy to local families this holiday season is always a favourite time of year for staff says store manager Larissa Ryan. “Putting up and decorating the tree, laying out gifts and hanging the gift suggestions is always a fun team effort for us,” says Larissa. “It’s great that we are able to work with communities across New Zealand and Australia and provide our kids with a bit of joy every year. “Even if it’s something little, like a small donation at the tills or leaving a cute little note on the tree for someone to read, it all goes a long way to making the holiday period a little better for someone.” The Salvation Army’s team leader Bridget Nolan says she and the entire organisation are thankful every year for the Kmart donations.

The Salvation Army’s Bridget Nolan and Emma Howan join Kmart staff for the opening of the Blenheim store’s 2023 Wishing Tree Appeal. Photo: William Woodworth. “The relationship between us and Kmart has been going on for 30 years, and so when Kmart came to Blenheim we wanted to get involved as soon as possible.” The Wishing Tree Appeal is collecting gifts up until Christmas Eve.

Bridget says all donations will find a good home in time for the big day. “It’s a real community morale boosting exercise anyone can get involved in. “It’s so thoughtful to help kids that you’ve never met have a wonderful Christmas with some-

thing they really love to get.” “If we’re lucky like we were a few years ago and get an awesome turnout from Marlburians just before Christmas, we’ll even be able to keep some for next year’s drive.” Gifts can be donated in store at Kmart during opening hours.

A recent, well-beloved addition to Blenheim’s series of public statues has seen some damage, but the sculptor is looking on the bright side. The striking bronze Last of the Stragglers sculpture in central Blenheim of an aging shepherd, his trusty dog and his flock of sheep saw one of the sheep’s ears bent off. But, sculptor Tony Matthews wasn’t surprised that his piece would need repairs. “I come through town or get sent photos of kids playing on the statues so it could have been an accident with someone stepping on the wrong part”, says Tony. “If it was malicious, it was always the most obvious part to be able to take off so I already had replacements ready.

Bronze sculptor Tony Matthews and his Last of the Stragglers art installation. Photo: William Woodworth. “I actually thought I made that ear too big originally anyway, so I already made upgrades to the model for when it needed replacing.

“They are there to be a part of Blenheim’s charm so I’m glad people appreciate them that much to play and take photos with them”.

From the front MIST vehicles are deployed to complex missions where lots of people need to be treated such as the Christchurch earthquake. But it will also be used as a home base for large events like the Classic Fighters Airshow at Omaka. They are standardised across the country, with the specialised Mercedes Benz Sprinter engine and chassis completed by Action Manufacturing in Hamilton. “Hopefully we don’t have to use the MIST truck too often for major incidents, but we’re not going to let it sit and gather dust - our paramedics and response teams are glad to have it on hand making the region safer,” Murray says. Phil Grigg and Dave Parsons are part of an emergency response logistics team. They say the MIST truck will make mission roles more streamlined. “The trucks are standardised so if response teams are needed anywhere across the country any responder knows where what they need is,” says Phil. “In, for example the cyclone in Hawke’s Bay, we’re now able to transfer anywhere across the country and provide the same logistical support so responder’s missions of

With everything a patient may need, a full field hospital can be set up within 30 minutes. The MIST vehicle is configured as a standard ambulance up front but plugged in to power every night to ensure everything is fully charged up – including a full set of walkie talkies. “MIST vehicles are our one stop shop for any incidents or for any events with potential for incidents,” says Dave. “It’s deployable anywhere it is needed, set up ready for long missions at a moments notice, kept fully charged and ready to go.”

The truck can also operate for a long time off battery storage or generator power and act as a home base for long-term or rurally based missions, while also being deployable into other regions if necessary. “It’s awesome to have here now and our practise makes perfect,” says Dave. “The most urgent items responders need are the most accessible, and it’s great to know we’re always ready for a long time away from base if needed. “It’s always great to get new, shiny kit and know how everything works – our first chance to operate was the Marlborough Flyer training run which we took some valuable learnings from,” agrees Phil.

“It means our responses are safer for us in the setting up of field hospitals down to the little things of more lighting and deploying the 200kg inflatable tent

in a safer manner for us. “It’s faster for our clinical staff to react and more accessible to urgent situations across the country.”

The MIST trucks are set up so in an emergency, first responders can operate with a field hospital set up in 30 minutes.

Growing brighter futures

PAULA HULBURT

Dedicated school students have been working hard to make positive changes to their outdoor space, capturing colour along the way. St Mary’s School celebrated their Enviro Day last week with plenty of digging, mulching, weeding and planting. All 150 students got the chance to help make the grounds an even more inviting place to be. Principal Bridget Comer says the school has always been committed to helping the children be more involved in their outdoor environment. “We’re looking at developing it further, and that’s a priority we’re

the day to their endeavours. From planting in the edible garden to keeping the Prayer Garden weed free and bright, pupils were rightly proud of their efforts. Bridget says the idea is for the school to have spaces outside

which pupils can make the most of. “Our environment is one in which the children can learn, play, rest and simply be. “There is a sense of wellbeing, belonging and responsibility when

everyone is involved.” Overseen by Enviro lead Sara Middleton, St Mary’s is part of the Enviroschools. The national initiative is supported by Toimata Foundation, founding partner Te Mauri Tau, and a large network of regional partners. Early childhood centres and schools commit to a long-term sustainability journey. Students connect with and explore the environment, then plan, design and put in place environmental projects. “Our Kaupapa is about having whanau step in to help too. Every time we plant, we harvest and support the community and our families,” Bridget says.

Investment company makes move to Marlborough STAFF REPORTER

An award-winning investment company has opened its doors to the public to celebrate the opening of its 25th office. Forsyth Barr welcomed people to its new Battys Road office on Thursday, holding a celebration to mark the occasion. This gives advisers Brent Street

and Jonathan Davidson, who already help many clients in Marlborough, a base to operate from. Both Brent and Jonathan are accredited and registered New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX) advisors. Brent has been with Forsyth Barr for more than three decades, while Jonathan Davidson has worked in the financial services

industry for more than twenty years, joining the company in 2009. They will continue their involvement in the region from the new branch, alongside Nikki Jacobson, who brings 20 years of experience in the Wealth and Financial Markets division of one of Australasia’s leading banks to the company. “My husband and I moved here

with our children six years ago,” she says. “It was a lifestyle choice, and we have family here that we love. “A year ago, the opportunity arose to join the Forsyth Barr team, which is a dream come true for me, as it allows me to return to work that truly excites me while living in a beautiful place where our family is happy and settled.”

Nikki, Brent, and Jonathan say they are delighted with their premises on the corner of Battys Road and Waters Avenue and looking forward to welcoming clients. The team offer a full range of investment services, including Portfolio Management, Investment Advice and Share broking, Fixed Interest, Savings, Investment Funds, and KiwiSaver.

The White Ribbon Riders and Marlborough Violence Intervention Project team joined forces against domestic violence. Photo: William Woodworth.

Bikers tackling domestic violence WILLIAM WOODWORTH

Motorcycles roaring across Marlborough have been spreading an important message - domestic violence is never ok. Riders taking part in the annual South Island White Ribbon Ride stopped in Blenheim last week. The team were joined by Marlborough Violence Intervention Project volunteers for the Marlborough leg of their journey. As well as putting on a sausage sizzle at The Quays on Wednesday, riders visited Queen Charlotte College, Bohally Intermediate and Marlborough Boys College and RNZAF Base Woodbourne. “The bikes draw people in to see what’s happening, and then the importance of the White Ribbon cause leaves with them”, says South Island ride leader Kris North. “Domestic violence takes so many shapes – bruises and welts hurt just as much as verbal abuse for many.”

The White Ribbon Ride was set up 15 years ago, helping break the circle of violence embedded in many families and communities. Kris says Marlborough is proactive when it comes to helping get the key anti-violence message across. “Marlborough has a great team here with the Marlborough Violence Intervention Project doing awesome work and being able to travel around the South Island to meet and encourage the work that groups like them are doing is so key to our goals. “We all come from different backgrounds with different stories and there’s no limits or cost to join.” The annual initiative brings together riders every November to talk about healthy masculinity. White Ribbon Ambassador Dave Ellena says half of the battle is acknowledging there is a problem year-round. “We are always blown away by what stories people have to share with us,

and the strength they have shown to get through their situations”, says Dave, who has been involved with White Ribbon for six years. “We try and speak to as many people across our community as possible to prevent violence, from former abusers and victims, to school kids as a preventative mission to ensure they know it’s never ok to be violent as they grow to become partners and parents. “We’re just ordinary people from every walk of life that believe in the greater mission that every person that we help break the cycle of violence for, that’s another win in our eyes.” The South Island White Ribbon Ride would like to thank Blenheim Toyota, Countdown, Debbie Webster Real Estate and RNZAF Base Woodbourne for their support. Decking the halls for show of strength

News in brief

PAULA HULBURT

An historic brick church in need of seismic strengthening is turning on the festive fun in a bid to help raise vital funds. For more than a century, Blenheim’s Church of Nativity has been part of the Blenheim community. Now the fundraising committee have set out to raise $600,000 to help bring the landmark church up to code – and they hope Christmas will be key. The Fun and Fundraising committee have organised a self-guided Christmas house tour which gets underway this weekend. Committee members Stephen Leitch and wife Nicci Leitch are putting their home up as one of six houses on the Joy of Christmas tour. The pair have been working hard to create an eye-catching look. “We’ve been holding working bees for weeks, making wreaths and other things. “Everyone on the committee has been putting in the hard graft,” Stephen says. A member of the Church of Nativity for 22 years, Stephen says it would be wonderful to

LOGGING TRUCK CRASH

A logging truck rolled over on State Highway 6 on Monday, bringing traffic to a stand still. Emergency crews and Waka Kotahi personnel worked hard to clear fallen logs. The driver is not believed to have been hurt in the accident. The incident happened at about 12.30pm with many drivers facing long delays between Blenheim and Nelson. AGRICULTURAL ACHIEVER

Committee member Janet Guard says houses on the tour have been picked to “inspire and delight.” “Also included on the tour is a Christmas gift shop, wreath-making demonstra-

tions, afternoon tea and a special Christmas raffle.” While Stephen is keeping their theme under wraps, each house will have a unique look for people to enjoy. It helps make the festive season even more special, he says. “Our Christmas’s are relaxed with lots of people, between 15 to 20 sitting around two tables out on the deck. “It’s very relaxed’ it’s lovely.” Home base for the Tours will be St Barnabas Chapel, the little wooden church tucked in beside the big brick church at 76 Alfred St.

The chapel will also be decorated for Christmas and open to the public for free on Friday evening between 5 and 8.30pm for viewing of the community-group decorated trees and interior. Tickets will also be available at St Barnabas Chapel between: 5:00 - 8:30pm on Friday December 1 and between 9 and 10:30am on Saturday December 2. Tickets will be available at Nativity Reception or online at https://www.nativity.org.nz/ news-and-events/christmastour23.

Blenheim’s Richard Dawkins has been announced as part of the short list for the 2024 Zanda McDonald Award, which is Australia and New Zealand’s agricultural badge of honour. Richard, who is Vice President of Marlborough Federated Farmers and a sheep and beef farmer, joins nine other candidates for the award which recognises young people working in the primary industry sectors in and supports their future career development. Talking to Tony

Rātū 28 Noema 2023

9

Comedian Tony Lyall is a proud Blenheim boy done well – regularly popping up on The Project, 7 Days, and the annual Comedy Gala while also MC’ing at Black Caps. Reporter William Woodworth spoke to the 2024 Marlborough Food & Wine Festival MC. You juggle being a standup comedian, a TV writer, a sports commentator with the Alternative Comedy Collective (ACC), MC for some of New Zealand’s biggest sport teams as well as being a dad of three – how do you manage juggling all those roles? Honestly, I’m not sure – I usually get by being aggressively late to anything, doing things as half-heartedly as possible to a good standard, and a having well organised calendar on my iPhone. I think by being friendly to everyone, shaking hands and having a good time, life just falls into place – and the kids just raise themselves these days, but the family life is a great place to rest and relax. Where did the dual passions for comedy and sport come? I’ve always loved my rugby and cricket but I was also a bit of a theatre nerd during my time at Marlborough Boys’ College. I only really went to school for sports, PE, drama, maybe a bit of music and lunchtimes, which for the record I don’t recommend. I wrote a comedy sports column in the Critic while studying at Otago which was my first opportunity to combine the two. But the ACC boys were canaries down the coal mine, and I was a fan of their work long before I got the call up to the desk. Listening to them is much more like watching sport in your lounge with mates which is way more approachable.

Comedian Tony Lyall is MC at next year’s Marlborough Wine & Food Festival. Photo: Supplied. You’ve been in front of the camera and behind the scenes at The Project which is sadly ending. What’s are a couple of favourite memories from being involved on the show? I always think back to during the

pandemic when Jeremy Corbett got caught up at a place of interest 10 minutes before the show was about to start. Show runner Jon Bridges burst into the writers’ room. I had to run downstairs, get a suit on, and

get broadcasted to the country in a massive rush. Luckily it was a Friday, everyone was ready for a laugh and there weren’t any difficult stories. I’ll really miss being able to travel around and chat to great New

Zealanders across the country on a weekly basis. As a Blenheim boy, what’s your most cherished memories of growing up here? Any favourite spots? I love being from Blenheim – Marlborough is one hell of a place and I love coming back and taking the family to Whites Bay and Robin Hood Bay. The Sounds as well are second to none, but there’s some fantastic carparks in Blenheim that I spent plenty of time in like Pollard Park or behind Macca’s. I will never forgive Peter Jones for dropping me from the First XV in Year 13 for some no name Year 11 called Joey Wheeler, but I was always a “glue guy” for the team that probably enjoyed the after-match activities and court sessions more than my time on the field. How do you think coming from a Blenheim background gives you a point of difference in your line of work? Definitely. South Islanders have a different perspective to life, and you get this natural cheekiness because you have to hold your own when it comes to chatting with mates while growing up. She had such a great way with the children. She is missed so dearly by the parents and students that had the pleasure of having her in their lives. Local success in pool play PETER JONES

Ben Stace is looking forward to the exciting and challenging projects the next five years of business will bring. interior designers, and the suppliers, for working with me during our first five years. “And of course, I would like to thank all our fantastic clients for entrusting us with the design of their homes.” As Design Marlborough Architecture embarks on the next few years, Ben is excited to work on more challenging new projects, and on ex-

panding the team over time to allow for more collaboration within the office. Ben says, “Design Marlborough is here for the long term, and we hope to be a part of Marlborough’s growth in a positive way over the coming decades. “There is so much untapped potential still here.”

Both Marlborough sides at last week’s South Island Junior secondary schools water polo tournament claimed podium finishes. Leading the way was the Marlborough Girls’ College junior side who forged an unbeaten record over the four-day event, staged at Marlborough Lines Stadium. They overcame particularly stiff opposition from Villa Maria College, who they played on three occasions, including Friday’s final in which they prevailed 10-6. Four of the MGC side were included in the tournament

team, namely Poppy Clark, Elizabeth Douthett, Hayley McCormick and Koko Wong. The Marlborough Boys’ College junior side finished in third position, beating Christ’s College 20-2 in the battle for the bronze medal. They lost to both finalists, St Bede’s and Christchurch Boys’ High School A but proved very competitive as the tournament progressed, pushing eventual winners St Bede’s hard in pool play before going down 9-6. Goalie Fynn Russell and George Adams made the boys’ tournament team. MGC squad: Poppy Clark, Elizabeth Douthett, Hayley McCormick, Carys McNabb,

Gabby Miller, India Nathan, Katie Pugh, Libby Senior, Koko Wong. MBC squad: Fynn Russell, Leon Edsall, Ben Lindfield, Alex McLeish, George Adams, Hugo Edsall, Stian Kuun, Mason Nicklin, Jamie Harrison, William McCallum. Newly-crowned Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year Melissa Galloway and her 13-yearold gelding Windermere J’Obei are a step closer to earning a start at the 2024 Paris Olympics. On Saturday, the Tuamarina-based duo won the Pacific League World Cup in Cambridge, earning a much-coveted place at the 2024 FEI Dressage World Cup final in Saudi Arabia in April and pushing their case for Olympic inclusion. Melissa and ‘Joey’ scored 79.240% in the GP freestyle competition, slightly off her previous best of 79.865%. The musical performance result came after winning the Grand Prix a day earlier with a personal best score of 74.218%. Fellow New Zealander Wendi

Williamson on Don Vito MH, 11-year-old gelding also bred in New Zealand, was the only other combination in the league final, and was awarded 73.630%. The Pacific League is the only one of the four geographic divisions that holds a final to determine the single representative among the starting lineup of 18 riders and horses for the elite event in Riyadh. Thirty-year-old Melissa, the highest-ranked dressage rider in the Pacific League nations of Australia and New Zealand and ranked 33 in the world, spent most of the spring and summer of 2022 in Europe leading to the world championships in Denmark last year. Cricket finalists decided; women’s rep side in action PETER JONES

peter@topsouthmedia.co.nz

Wairau Valley and Celtic will meet in the SBS Bank senior cricket 40over final next weekend. Celtic will head into the competition decider in a positive frame of mind after winning both previous 40-over clashes against Valley this season, including a comprehensive six-wicket victory on Saturday. Valley batted first at Horton Park and struggled throughout, being dismissed for just 91 in the 34th over. Although six Valley batsmen reached double figures just Tim Abrahams went on, reaching 21 as the Celtic attack held sway. Three bowlers picked up a brace, both Jaden Adams and Tom Sutherland snaring 2-14, while Josh Poole picked up 2-23. Celtic’s replay was short and sharp. Positive play from Sutherland (24), Ben Holdaway (21) and Luke Holdaway (25 not out) allowing them to reach their target in just 14.2 overs. Sam Boyce picked up 2-28 as the Valley bowlers battled unsuccessfully to defend a below-par score. In contention to force their way into the final was Renwick, who took on winless Wairau on Horton Park three. Renwick needed a win and a bonus point to edge past Valley into the decider but came up well short against a Wairau side who produced their most compelling per-

Leading the way was rep player/ coach Andrew McCaa who followed up an unbeaten 76 in Friday evening’s T20 match with a superb 134 not out from 139 balls, a knock which included 19 fours and one six. Lending support was Sam Young and Hunter Ruffell, who both added 27 in Wairau’s imposing total of 282-8. Piers Landon-Lane was the most successful Renwick bowler, bagging 3-46, while Tim May claimed 2-31. Needing a miracle to qualify, Renwick batted positively but came unstuck against some handy Wairau bowling, especially from spinner Griffin Carter, who took 5-10 from 7.5 overs Richard O’Shaughnessy top scored for the Green Machine with an unbeaten 37 while Max

Armstrong added 30 as their side were bowled out for 107 in 26.5 overs. T20 kicks off On Friday evening the senior Twenty20 competition began. Just four teams will contest the title this season, with MBC players returning to their respective clubs. Opening with wins were Wairau, who beat Renwick by six wickets, and Celtic, who overcame Wairau Valley by the same margin. Wairau restricted Renwick to 1257 from their 20 overs, Blair Timms top scoring with 46, while Luke Frankland hit an unbeaten 43. Nick Weaver and Baxter Croad were the pick of the attack, claiming five of the seven wickets to fall. McCaa’s 76 not out from just 52 balls formed the basis of Wairau’s chase, helped by Aiden Lavender’s 30 at the top of the order.

Valley batted first in the other fixture, amassing 106-7, Sam Boyce’s 27 top score. All seven Celtic bowlers used claimed a single wicket each. Celtic wasted no time in reaching their target, scoring 110-4 in 11.4 overs. Greg Knowles (30), Tom Sloan (20) and Josh Poole with an unbeaten 18 propelled the Green and Golds to a quick victory. Liam George claimed 3-37 to be the most successful Valley bowler. Women’s rep side beaten Opening their 2023-24 representative campaign on Sunday was the Marlborough women’s side, who travelled over the hill to take on the Nelson Nyxons in a 40-over match at Saxton Oval. Marlborough batted first and struggled to score consistently and quickly against a steady Nelson attack.

After slipping to 38-4, a 60-run partnership between Anna Booker, unbeaten on 28, and Megan Sandford, 26, offered the visitors hope of a sizeable score, however when that was broken momentum swung back to Nelson and Marlborough were forced to settle for 136-7 at the end of 40 overs. Petra Cederman with 4-21 from eight led the Nelson bowling attack. The home side’s reply was emphatic, Central Districts Hinds player Kate Gaging and fellow opener Catherine Hockly putting together a 107-run opening partnership to ensure there was only going to be one result. Gaging finished unbeaten on 85 from 81 balls, while Hockly amassed 24 from 40 deliveries. Debutant Pania Dallarosa picked up the only Nelson wicket to fall as they raced to 140-1 in the 21st over.

Saints eclipse Stoke Eagles PETER JONES

The Saints men’s softball side scored two clear-cut victories over Nelson-based rivals Stoke Eagles at Lansdowne Park on Saturday. The teams have enjoyed a close rivalry in recent seasons, with fortunes fluctuating, but this time it was the home side’s turn to dominate, winning game one 7-0 and following up with a 9-2 victory. In the first game they set the tone early. A home run to lead-off batter Braden Healy in the bottom of the first inning was followed by a run to second batter Drew Roberts, who working his way around the bases and came home on a pass ball to put immediate pressure on Stoke hurler Riley Power. With Will MacDonald pitching strongly for Saints, backed up by some smart work from his infielders, Eagles struggled to consistently put bat to ball. Saints added three runs in the sec-

ond, Roberts, Sam Kenny and Callum Hayton rounding home plate to stretch the lead to five. Healy produced another strong left field drive, forced an error and jogged around the bases for his side’s sixth at the top of the fourth, then Hayton sealed the deal, wrapping up a complete performance. Eagles made a much better start in game two, Matt Lowe and Jack Rennie scoring in their first inning. Unfortunately, that was all they managed as Saints’ batters quickly took a liking to Rennie’s pitching, scoring five runs in their first turn at bat, including a home run to Kenny and three-base hits to Tyler Bird and Campbell Gill. Further home runs to Kenny, Bird and Healy completed a highly-satisfactory outing for the local lads. In the women’s competition, Wairau scored a 23-1 win over Saints while Waitohi beat Central 25-8 and Saints 22-5.

Kaha basketballers off to strong start PETER JONES

Within a year, Kaka Basketball has become a significant force on the Marlborough sporting landscape. A successful outing at the Mainland’s under-15 tournament 2022, followed by a trip to the USA in April 2023, signalled the arrival of the Kaha Basketball concept. Those initial forays were followed by participation in two high profile Auckland-based tournaments, for under-16 and under-18 players. Kaha Basketball is described as “a new basketball academy in the Wairau region focussing on rangatahi around the 12-18 age bracket”. Organisers say, “the focus will be on holistic development of players, working on skill, alongside team values and culture (team before self, courage, resilience, respect). “They aim to accomplish this by providing training, skill development, wananga and coaching and leadership opportunities and importantly, more access to tournaments nationally and internationally.” Over Labour Weekend the Kaha Basketball under-18 team travelled to Auckland to compete in the inaugural SAS Australasian SLAM tournament. Placed in a pool of five, the team went unbeaten through pool play. Their toughest battle came in the last pool game, their third of a gruelling day, but they showed character to pull through against a very skilled and fresher Hoops 33

combination. With participation in the finals now a real possibility, game times were adjusted to fit with flights and it was on to the semis. There Kaha U18 met the South Auckland Basketball Panteras, who they had battled past 5748 in pool play. This time the Marlborough lads knew what to expect, holding them to 30 points and scoring 60 of their own. The final saw them matched against the winner of Pool B, the Hoop Clinic Huskies. The Kaha team matched them in all areas except three-point shooting, with several of their opponents shooting over 50 percent from three-point range. Although the Kaha team fought admirably, and closed to within six points in the third, they were eventually beaten 69-58. They performed well above their expectations, with Aki Collins showing the way. He consistently led the team in scoring and was “an absolute nightmare” for other teams to stop. Mana Collins provided key leadership skills while centre Toby Baker was adept at setting screens for his teammates, rebounding, blocking shots and scoring inside. The Kaha Basketball U18 team: Mana Collins (captain), Jake Gane (vice-captain), Aki Collins, Ollie Harris, Vitale Toia, Alex Boyce, Tyson Foote, Toby Baker, Aston Dollimore and Leon Wightwick. Dan Clarke and Ajay Gane were non-travelling reserves while Leo Wiapo and Tarin Mason were coaches, alongside manager Catherine Harris.

The under-16 team also played in the Auckland event, taking time out on the journey north to play a Tokoroa High School team and stay on the school marae. The SAS under-16 elite tournament was a big ask for the Marlborough crew but, after narrow losses on the first day, they began to find their feet against some highly-skilled rivals. On day two they picked up their first win, followed by two more victories on day three. Manager Sam Quinn said, “This is a new group of extreme talented and skilful players who have come together over five weeks prior to the tournament. They came sixth overall in the premier division, playing well as a team and under pressure. “All players contributed to the team success and each game saw a player rise to the occasion. Our high scorers were Malachi Maui and Thomas Blackmore while Brodie Materoa produced all-round play on both defence and attack. Ryan Quinn and Enzo Silva were a strong presence on rebounding at both ends of the court.” The Kaha Basketball under-16 team: Thomas Blackmore, Daniel du Plessis, Malachi Manu, Brodie Materoa, Malakai Riwaka-Clark, Enzo Silva, Tomasi Siovaeata, Ryan Quinn, Hunter Warmouth and Marcel Zolt Kavacs. Coach was Matt Manu and manager Sam Quinn. Next year the Kaha crew intend to travel to Japan.
